A principal evolução é no sistema defensivo.

– A confiança voltou.

Zaheer targets Australia's swing weakness

Australia’s difficulties against the swinging ball, to be addressed by a remedial batting clinic in Melbourne next week, have offered a tonic to Zaheer Khan and the India bowling attack.Zaheer is not playing in the Indians’ opener against a Cricket Australia Chairman’s XI, but he spoke enthusiastically of his preparation for the upcoming Test series against batsmen unnerved by the sort of swerve his bowling can possess.”It is definitely encouraging as a bowling unit [that Australia are struggling against swing], our strength as Indians has always been swinging the ball,” Zaheer said. “That’s what we’re going to rely on here as well, even though the wickets here will offer bounce, we’ll still be trying to use the swing of the ball, so hopefully we’ll be able to extract some swing in the matches to come.”As a bowler it is all about getting into the right areas. If you’re hitting the right lengths and able to get the ball moving then you’re going to trouble any batsman in the world if you get those channels going.”Zaheer, 33, has not played for India since suffering a hamstring tear in the first Test of the series against England at Lord’s in July, and subsequently underwent ankle surgery, which made his selection for Australia conditional on the basis of some solid Ranji Trophy appearances. Having fulfilled the selectors’ wishes, he is now on course to lead the line against Australia.”I’ve definitely had a lot more time to prepare as far as this series is concerned,” he said. “I feel I’ve done everything possible to get here, and very happy with the way things are going personally for me. Happy with my rhythm in the nets and a bit of match practice will help me.”It was a long flight for us so it is important we get into rhythm. I got to see a bit of bowling, I am happy with the way the whole approach has been, and I’m looking forward to playing the next one myself.”The need for Zaheer to be fit is increased by the fact that Ishant Sharma’s left ankle may again be giving him grief, though loose ankle strapping was the explanation offered by a team official for a brief and interrupted appearance at the bowling crease on day one of the tour match. Wes Robinson, one of two local centurions, said Ishant had bowled well enough in his two brief spells.”He seemed to be getting through it okay,” Robinson said. “He only bowled that one over first up and then I think he went off for some treatment, and then he came back and bowled a few overs, so he got them through okay. Obviously hadn’t faced him before so I don’t know if that’s his quickest or whether he’s just warming up into it but he certainly got them through a bit.”Zaheer described Ishant’s withdrawal as “just a precautionary measure”, and preferred to speak about the promise shown by Umesh Yadav, who took three wickets on a batsmen’s day.”It is very good to see someone bowling like that, I’ve been mentioning back in India it is good to see him bowl 140kph plus, which is really important. I’m sure the wickets here are going to suit his style of bowling because the wickets are going to provide that extra bit of bounce.”It is still early days for him, and the more he plays the more he is going to learn, so it is all about exposure at this level, and I’m sure with time he’ll learn more things.”

I am ready for competitive cricket – Pujara

Cheteshwar Pujara, the 23-year-old batsman who underwent knee injury in July, has said he has sufficiently recovered to return to competitive cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Oct-2011Cheteshwar Pujara, the 23-year-old batsman who underwent knee injury in July, has said he has sufficiently recovered to return to competitive cricket. He is targeting a return to international cricket on India’s tour of Australia in December this year.”I’m quite fit now, I’ve been practising regularly,” Pujara told . “I run well and I’ve no difficulty whatsoever with any of my body movements. I may not play the first couple of Ranji Trophy games [the tournament begins on November 3], but I’m ready for competitive cricket now.”I’m keen, even determined, to get back on track again. I know I’ve to prove my fitness and then to score runs, as in the past. But I see no problem doing both once I start playing cricket. I’m sure of regaining my place in Team India and confident of making it to the Australia tour.”Pujara injured his knee in May while fielding for Royal Challengers Bangalore during the 2011 IPL and had been out of cricket since. During his rehabilitation period after surgery, he had trained under physio Nitin Patel at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore. The surgery stalled his bid to secure a spot in India’s Test XI. He had delivered on Test debut against Australia in Bangalore last October, hitting 72 to help India chase down 207 and seal the series 2-0. In the process, he became only the fifth Indian to score a half-century or more in the fourth innings on debut.Pujara is known for his solid, classical technique, and the praise he received as a result had been a motivator, he said. “I feel encouraged when truly great cricketers like Gundappa Viswanath appreciate my technique and performance. This is a big motivation for me. I’m determined to make a comeback.”

BCCI too powerful, players believe

More than two-thirds of players polled in a recent survey believe the BCCI has an unfair influence on decision-making within the ICC

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Jun-2011More than two-thirds of players polled in a recent survey believe the BCCI has an unfair influence on decision-making within the ICC. The Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) has renewed its calls for a review of the game’s governance after releasing the results of its 2011 player survey, which also revealed strong support for the decision review system and 50-over cricket.Despite overwhelming approval for how this year’s World Cup was run, the findings were not all positive for the ICC. Of the 45 players polled, only 6% believed that decisions at ICC board level were made “in the best interests of cricket”, while 49% felt decisions were made according to “party lines or best interests of the country that they are representing”. The remaining players were “unsure”.When asked if ICC decision-making was influenced unfairly by the power of the BCCI, 69% said ‘yes’, while 31% answered “don’t know”. None of the respondents gave a definitive ‘no’. Despite those concerns, 63% said they had confidence in the ICC’s ability to govern international cricket, although the FICA chief executive Tim May said the findings raised important issues, with 46% saying the structure and composition of the ICC executive board should be reviewed.”Players have highlighted that the governance of the game is a serious issue,” May said. “FICA have continually advocated for a review of the game’s governance. Its present structure is outdated, full of conflicts, cronyism and far from best practice. FICA does believe though that the ICC day-to-day management has improved considerably and are unfairly tarnished as a result of decisions of the ICC Chief Executive and Board Committees.”The call for a review of the game’s governance is not new. FICA have been pushing for change for several years, and the former ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed this year said he would be in favour of an independent commission running the game, although he also said the idea that countries always voted in geographical blocs was, based on his time at the organisation, not accurate. The FICA survey did reveal some good news for the ICC, with 94% of players rating the recent World Cup as “good” or above, compared to only 11% giving the 2007 tournament that level of support. However, the event is still too long, according to 74% of those surveyed, while 72% backed the decision to reduce the number of teams in the next World Cup to 10, and 91% felt the Associate nations should have a chance to qualify. The majority (82%) of players said the DRS made for better decision-making from umpires at the World Cup, and 97% thought the DRS should be compulsory in all Test matches. Notably, FICA is not affiliated with players from India – the BCCI being the major opponent of the DRS – or from Pakistan or Zimbabwe. The survey also showed: 32% of players would retire prematurely from international cricket to play exclusively in the IPL and similar Twenty20 tournaments 40% said that given the magnitude of salaries being offered by the IPL, they could envisage a day where they would rank their obligations to IPL and other T20 events ahead of obligations to their home boards 94% believed that superior salaries offered by the IPL would motivate younger players to hone their skills principally to T20 40% said their board schedules too much international cricket Only 24% of players favour a change in the format of ODIs 39% believe boards schedule too many ODIs, reducing the public’s interest in the format

Abbottabad, SBP hold out for draws

Round-up of the fourth day of the ninth round of Division Two of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Dec-2010Abbottabad’s batsmen saved the game against Karachi Whites at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium, getting to 352 for 7 by the end of the last day. It was a team effort from Abbottabad, with five different batsmen getting past 40. Karachi broke the hosts’ opening partnership early on the fourth day, but then Ghulam Mohammad and Waqar Orakzai put together 61 for the second wicket. Orakzai went on to get 89 and shared a 103-run fourth wicket partnership with Fawad Khan. Fawad scored 72 and Riaz Kail came in and got a half-century too.Karachi may have felt they had a chance to win when they got the fifth wicket with Abbottabad on 277 and time still left in the day. Wicketkeeper Rehan Afridi ensured there was no lower-order collapse, scoring 46. It was a crucial result for Abbottabad, as they stayed level with Karachi in the table, despite conceding three points for the first-innings lead.

Pakistan Television came within three wickets of a victory that would have taken them to second in the table, but had to settle for three points as State Bank of Pakistan held on at the Marghzar Cricket Ground in Islamabad. Pakistan Television declared after batting for 12.3 overs on the fourth day, and set SBP a target of 322. Four wickets from seamer Saad Altaf and three from his new-ball partner Mohammad Ali reduced SBP to 99 for 7 with time still left to take the final three wickets. Adnan Raees held firm for SBP, getting 40, and Rizwan Haider battled it out at the other end, as the two managed a 39-run partnership and took their team through till the end of the day. The draw means SBP stay in second spot.

Hyderabad stole three points for the first-innings lead from Lahore Shalimar on the fourth morning at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground, thanks to a 60-run last wicket partnership between fast bowler Lal Kumar and seamer Kashif Pervez. In a tense start to the last day, the hosts needed five more runs to go past Lahore Shalimar’s first-innings score of 355, with one wicket in hand. They not only got those, but went on to reach 401. Kumar scored 126 and made sure Pervez only had to play 17 balls. Buoyed by his century, Kumar then took three wickets as Hyderabad reduced Lahore Shalimar to 130 for 5 by the end of the match.
