WACA groundsman hopes to revive past aura

Few venues in world cricket are as evocative as the WACA. From the days of Dennis Lillee thudding the ball into Rod Marsh’s upturned gloves, to the sight of Curtly Ambrose claiming seven wickets for one run in a legendary spell in 1992-93, it is a ground that has promised riches for all bowlers who relish pace and bounce in their deliveries.Around the turn of the 2000s, however, the WACA lost its bite, as the tired old pitches gave up the ghost after years of being baked in the Western Australian heat, and the ground’s reputation took a hit as a consequence. But according to the curator, Cameron Sutherland, a return to the surfaces of old is on the cards for the coming Test, as part of an overall project to revive the venue’s aura.”We’ve totally redeveloped the wicket block,” said Sutherland. “We dug it up and started again three years ago, and have been doing it stage by stage. This is only the second first-class game on the Test wicket – we played the West Indies Test on it last year and were pretty happy. Every year as it settles and compacts, it gets harder and gets better, and we think we are on the right track.”With two days to go until the Test gets underway, the pitch is a remarkable sight, with live grass giving the surface a lush green tinge that Sutherland says is a deliberate bid to improve the battle between bat and ball, even if – to judge by the effect in recent Sheffield Shield fixtures – the actual impact of the covering is likely to be less dramatic than its appearance would suggest.”Most of the Shield wickets have been new-ball wickets,” said Sutherland. “In the first 10 overs the quicks get a bit of movement, with a bit of swing around. We are aiming for similar, and are quite happy to have a bit of grass and colour in it for the Test. It took WA a season to get over looking at the colour, because it probably doesn’t influence the way it plays. There will a bit of nibble, but it won’t go excessively either way.”In the five years since Sutherland has been the WACA’s head curator, there has been just the one drawn Test match, and that was his first match in charge, when Jacques Rudolph batted South Africa to an improbably comfortable stalemate after being set an unlikely 491 in the fourth innings. But despite some definite signs of life in State cricket, Sutherland admits that he hasn’t quite got the formula right for his five-day surfaces.”This is the last piece in the puzzle,” he said. “The comment comes every year that the Shield wickets have been pretty lively and quick but what’s happened to the Test wickets? It hasn’t been for the want of trying. Hopefully this year will be similar to what we prepare for the domestic season. We’re in a better place with the ground and the wicket development is going nicely. Hopefully in the next three or four years we will keep improving it.”Either way, Sutherland does not expect a repeat of the scenario that he faced during a second XI fixture between Western Australia and New South Wales in November, when a dramatic temperature change caused cracks of up to 4cm to appear on a good length. The match came close to being abandoned but in the end NSW were persuaded to play on so long as there were “no silly buggers” from the pitch – and so it proved as they mustered 244 in the fourth innings to lose by 234 runs.”That grass we had only put in six months ago and our root establishment was not as good as it could have been,” explained Sutherland. “Since then we have had two four-day games with temperatures of 38C all the way through, so the Test wicket has sat there and baked. We estimate we will get some cracking, but that’s a characteristic we want – the soil we use sets hard but also cracks, and that’s part of the WACA.”Given the WACA’s history we’re hoping for a result, but it’s up to the players to make the most of it,” he added. “I’ve listened to people on the radio from the Gabba and Adelaide saying ‘gee, I wish some wickets would deteriorate’. Our characteristic is cracking. How much it opens up will depend on the weather. You might bowl first, get the freshness out of the wicket early, and then the cracks might even the contest up later.”

Sunderland "hopeful" of Dennis Cirkin boost

Sunderland could be about to land a huge injury lift over full-back Dennis Cirkin…

What’s the latest?

Black Cats boss Alex Neil has provided an update on the young defender and has not ruled him out of facing Morecambe in the final match of the regular League One season at the weekend.

He told The Chronicle: “Dennis, we’re hopeful won’t be out for too long and we’ll find out in the next couple of days whether he has a chance or not.”

Supporters will be buzzing

The supporters will surely be buzzing with this news as having Cirkin back and available would be a big boost to Alex Neil’s team.

Sunderland’s clash with Morecambe is a monumental match at both ends of the League One table and having as many key players fit as possible will help the Black Cats in their bid to land a play-off place. A win for Neil’s side will confirm their spot in the top six but it will not be an easy afternoon for the club as they come up against a team fighting to avoid relegation – with their opponents currently sitting two points above the drop.

This illustrates how big of a game this is for both sides and why fans will be delighted to see Cirkin back in action on Saturday. He has been a crucial member of the squad throughout the campaign in his first season of senior football and has shown that he can be a reliable League One defender.

The full-back has started 31 matches for the club in the division this term and averaged a solid SofaScore rating of 6.77. Cirkin has made 2.9 tackles and interceptions per match and won 59% of his duels, which shows that he has been a fine defender for the Black Cats by regularly winning the ball back and coming out on top in the majority of his individual battles.

He could improve his output in the final third, though, as he has only created 0.7 chances per game in League One and has registered two assists in total. However, his all-round performances and work on the defensive side of the game make up for his lack of attacking quality and this is why fans will be keen for him to make his injury return against Morecambe on Saturday, with a view to playing in the play-offs.

Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal star on opening day

A round-up of the first day of the fourth round of matches in Division One of the Quaid-E-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Nov-2010Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik sent a reminder to the national selectors with his ninth first-class century, to lead Faisalabad to 259 for 4 against Pakistan International Airlines at the Iqbal Stadium. Openers Agha Sabir and Shehzar Mohammad laid the groundwork with a 93-run stand that ruined Faisalabad’s plans after choosing to field. Three wickets fell in quick succession, but Malik was in no mood to hand over the initiative and guided PIA through the day’s play, finishing unbeaten on 112. Zeeshan Butt was the most incisive bowler, finishing with two scalps on a day when wickets were not easy to come by.Table-toppers Water and Power Development Authority tormented wooden-spoon holders Multan rolling them over for 111 on the opening day in Bahawalpur. Opening bowlers Sarfraz Ahmed and Naved-ul-Hasan were in their element, sharing six wickets as Multan’s batsmen struggled to find their feet. Waqas Khan made 23 and Ahmed Raza contributed 24 from No. 10 to push the score past the 100-run mark. WAPDA’s reply got off to a rough start as well, with seamer Tahir Maqsood picking up two wickets to reduce them to 40 for 3, and later 79 for 4. Hasan Adnan and Ali Azmat weathered the storm with a 72-run stand to secure the lead. Azmat perished for 45 with stumps in sight, but Adnan remained unbeaten on 37.Sialkot’s batsmen failed to convert starts on the opening day at the Jinnah Stadium, finishing at 251 for 6 to give Habib Bank Limited the upper hand at stumps on day one. Five batsmen managed to cross 28, but only Shehzad Malik managed to reach the half-century mark, and his unbeaten 69 held the key for the hosts going into the second day. The left-arm pair of spinner Mohammad Aslam and seamer Kamran Hussain did the damage, picking up three wickets each.A strong middle-order resistance helped National Bank of Pakistan recover from 20 for 2, but Karachi Blues hit back with regular strikes through the day to leave the game evenly poised at the National Stadium in Karachi. Opening bowlers Babar Rehman and Adeel Malik struck early to remove the openers cheaply, before Anwar Hafeez and Naumanullah stemmed the rot with a doughty partnership. The pair added 69 before Hafeez departed, one short of a half-century. Naumanullah struck ten fours but defended for the most part before perishing for 54, off the 163rd ball he faced. After his exit, NBP stepped on the gas through their international stars Kamran Akmal and Fawad Alam. Kamran launched an offensive, scoring 78 off 67 balls with ten fours and a six, adding 100 runs with Alam before falling to Adeel. Alam remained unbeaten on 53 at stumps and will hope to take his side to a dominant position from the first-day score of 251 for 5.Rizwan Akbar and Nasir Malik finished with three wickets apiece, while Babar Naeem scalped two, as Rawalpindi bowled out Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited for 224 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Captain Azhar Shafiq was the only batsman to offer resistance, scoring his 43rd first-class half-century to give the score some respectability. No. 8 Imran Khalid was the other significant contributor, his unbeaten 41 off 60 balls including seven hits to the boundary. Nasir was generous with no-balls and accounted for 12 of the 17 that Rawalpindi bowled, in addition to five wides, to push the score past 200.Seamer Mohammad Khalil continued to impress, picking four wickets to take his tournament tally to 23, as Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited bowled Islamabad out for 251 at the Diamond Club Ground. Sohail Tanvir, who was excluded from Pakistan’s Test squad at the last moment, began the slide by removing opener Nauman Masood with Islamabad still on zero. Tanvir continued to torment the top-order, picking three wickets, before Rashid Amin and Moed Ahmed fought back. Rashid scored 83 and Moed contributed 61 as Islamabad got back on an even keel through their 124-run association. Khalil then got into the act, and along with Junaid Zia, ran through the lower order to end Islamabad’s innings in the 67th over. The hosts hit back by removing ZTBL’s opener Inam-ul-Haq before stumps and honours remained even going into the second day.

Aston Villa: Luiz linked with Arsenal

Aston Villa have been tipped by reports to see a number of players move in and out of the club during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Even though there are still a few games left for the Villans to play before the 2021/22 Premier League season draws to a close, it seems as though one current Villa player has already been targeted for a potential summer exit.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from Football Insider sources, Arsenal are lining up a new move for Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz after failing to land him during the previous January transfer window.

Labelled as an “underrated” player by pundit Ian Wright, the £52k-per-week midfielder is set to see his contract run out in the summer of 2023.

Gerrard would be fuming

Since arriving at the Midlands club back in the 2019 summer transfer window from fellow Premier League side Manchester City in a deal worth a reported fee of £15m, the Brazilian has gone on to become an important figure for the Villans.

With 104 appearances under his belt across all competitions, the 23-year-old has scored four goals and provided eight assists in the process.

Having appeared in 27 league games in this campaign, Luiz has been a regular player for the Villans, leaving John McGinn as the only other midfielder in Steven Gerrard’s squad to have racked up more minutes than the Brazilian.

Earlier in the month, the Villa boss revealed that the former City man is a player that they rate very highly at the club, showing just how keen he would be to see the Brazil international stay at Villa Park.

To highlight just what he offers his side, only McGinn (127) and Matty Cash (156) have a higher number of combined tackles and interceptions than the £31.5m-rated ace (107).

His overall performances for the Villa Park outfit this season have earned Luiz a rating of 6.82 from WhoScored, making him the fifth-highest rated player in Gerrard’s squad.

Taking all of this into account, it’s hard to deny that the 41-year-old would be furious to see the club sell Luiz to another Premier League club this summer rather than tie him down to a new contract.

Also, with 91% of voters in a recent poll ran by Football FanCast claiming the Midlands club should offer the midfielder a new deal, this should be a top priority for the hierarchy at Villa Park.

Jones fit for Benfica-Liverpool clash

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has been passed fit for his side’s Champions League clash with Benfica on Tuesday night, journalist Ian Doyle has confirmed.

The Lowdown: Liverpool face latest test

The Reds continue their quadruple charge with a trip to Portugal as they take on the Lisbon outfit in the first leg of their quarter-final tie.

In truth, Jurgen Klopp’s men were handed a relatively kind draw in the grand scheme of things, with the Portuguese side surprise winners over Ajax in the last round.

Jones was a doubt for the game after he limped out of Saturday’s 2-0 win at home to Watford, but a positive update has now emerged.

The Latest: Jones passed fit

Taking to Twitter on Monday, Doyle confirmed via Klopp that the 21-year-old was in contention to start, having overcome his weekend problem.

The journalist tweeted: “Klopp on injuries: Full squad available for the game, absolutely. Curtis had a little swelling, disappeared overnight. Trent now, 4-5 days is ready as well.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-26/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Place on the bench

Prior to going off last weekend, Jones had disappointed against Watford, firing a couple of efforts wide of the target and struggling to get into the game, also losing possession 12 times.

For that reason, it would be a surprise if he starts tonight in what is another crucial match in Liverpool’s potentially legendary season, especially given his recent injury concern and his rarity of starts throughout the season in general.

Fabinho coming back into the number six role makes complete sense, while Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita could be the number eights, allowing Thiago to be managed carefully ahead of Sunday’s huge Premier League clash with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Wolves’ predicted XI vs Norwich

Wolverhampton Wanderers host Premier League rivals Norwich City in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon, with Bruno Lage’s men looking to go far in the competition.

The West Midlands side have enjoyed a strong first half of the Premier League campaign and sit eighth in the top-flight table whilst the Canaries are one point clear of the relegation zone.

Having beaten Championship outfit Sheffield United 3-0 with a very strong side in the previous round, we expect no different this time around. Here is how Football FanCast expects Wolves to line up on Saturday.

The main change from Wolves’ last game, a 2-1 league win at Brentford, is in between the sticks as John Ruddy gets his fourth first-team appearance of the season, replacing first-choice Jose Sa as he did in the previous round.

There is also a change in defence, as Marcal replaces 23-year-old Toti Gomes. The Portuguese defender has made two Premier League appearances so far, winning both games, but must be managed efficiently and giving Marcal a chance shouldn’t cause any complications.

In terms of midfield and wing-backs, the only change is in shape as a 3-5-2 shifts to a 3-4-3 with Joao Moutinho dropping out. The midfielder is 35 and therefore has to also be managed properly in order to continue performing at the high level he has been in the league all season.

Daniel Podence and Fabio Silva keep their places whilst Francisco Trincao comes in on the left-wing. The 22-year-old certainly has potential, with Match of the Day pundit Gary Lineker labelling the Barcelona loanee as a “very promising young player” on his Twitter account after an impressive performance against Manchester United earlier this season.

However, the £19.8m-rated Portuguese winger’s spell at Molineux hasn’t exactly gone to plan so far, with the 22-year-old still yet to score in the league whilst scoring his sole goal in an EFL Cup win over Nottingham Forest.

Striker Raul Jimenez is expected to be available after returning from international duty with Mexico, however, it seems unlikely that he’ll be fit to start and therefore 19-year-old Fabio Silva will have another opportunity to impress his manager.

Nothing to hide, Modi says after tax operation

The IPL’s third season continues to be dominated by events off the field, with income-tax officials conducting an eight-hour operation – ending at 3 a.m. on Friday – in the league’s offices and the residence of Lalit Modi, its commissioner, and a team also visiting the office of the Kings XI Punjab in Mohali. In the Indian Parliament, Shashi Tharoor, the junior foreign affairs minister, made a statement – it was tabled after Opposition members prevented him from speaking – defending his role in the Kochi franchise auction bid and denying any conflict of interest.Later on Friday, the IPL top brass – which includes most top BCCI officials – gathered in the northern town of Dharamsala for a league match and is reported to have held informal discussions on the situation. There has been speculation over Modi’s future role in the IPL, with some reports suggesting a senior board official could be made co-chairman of the league, but there was no official word on this.Ironically, while the Kings XI Punjab was playing host in Dharamshala, its offices at the Punjab Cricket Association – of which Modi is a vice-president – in Mohali were paid a visit by income-tax officials. It appeared a continuation of Thursday’s exercise, which began simultaneously at the IPL office in the BCCI headquarters, Modi’s own office in another part of town – where he was – and his suite of rooms at a luxury hotel.Modi emerged in the early hours of Friday and spoke briefly to reporters. “They have taken documentation in regard to the bidding, I am sure they will be satisfied with the documents they have got,” Modi said. “If they are not satisfied, we will provide them with more information. We are a public body, we have nothing to hide.”They were given documentation details, they verified the documents and went through the entire process of bidding. The questioning was over in a few minutes, but it took them longer as they had to go through the documents.”Modi said the officials saw the documents related to bidding by the new franchisees, owned by Sahara and the Kochi consortium, as well as those related to other IPL franchises. In his statement to the Lok Sabha, Tharoor repeated his stand – that he had acted in good faith as an MP from Kerala and that he had not gained financially from the deal.”I have neither benefited nor received a single rupee from my association with the consortium,” Tharoor said, reading out his statement to reporters in front of Parliament House. “”This allegation is particularly wounding because I’ve had a three-decade career in public service and those who know me are aware that money has never been a motivating factor.”My role in mentoring was within the bounds of appropriate conduct of an MP and a minister….there was no misuse of my official position or ministry…my official position gave me no advantage. It was irrelevant to the bid.”The allegations involving Tharoor point to his close relationship with Sunanda Pushkar, a marketing professional who has been given a 4.7 per cent stake in the consortium as sweat equity. The allegation is that she is a front for Tharoor, a charge the minister has consistently denied. “Whatever money that accrues by way of sweat equity is for their work in the future and is not connected to me,” he said, adding that he perceived a gender bias to be against this allegation.

Lumb assault knocks out Punjab

The Sawai Mansingh Stadium remained a fortress for Rajasthan Royals, who made it eight out of eight wins at the venue by bulldozing Kings XI Punjab with five overs remaining

The Bulletin by Siddarth Ravindran07-Apr-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Michael Lumb blazed 83 off 43 to make short work of the target•Indian Premier LeagueThe Sawai Mansingh Stadium remained a fortress for Rajasthan Royals, who made it eight out of eight wins at the venue by bulldozing Kings XI Punjab with five overs remaining. Opener Michael Lumb pummelled 83 off 43 balls to deliver Rajasthan their third straight victory, which lifted them to joint second spot, an unlikely position for a team that was written off after starting with three defeats in a row.Rajasthan sprinted to the highest total of the season in the first five overs (65), after Punjab had mucked about to gather the least runs in the final five overs (27), reflecting the gulf between the two sides. Punjab reverted to being the bumbling bunch that has been entrenched at the bottom of the table all season: the batting lost fizz after a bubbly start, the fielding was the usual butter-fingered effort, and the bowling lacked inspiration.Mahela Jayawardene top-scored again, and Yuvraj Singh briefly showed off his awesome hitting, but with the rest failing to contribute anything substantial Punjab ended up with an inadequate total. The variety of sweeps against the spinners and the trademark carves behind point off the quicks were the highlight of Jayawardene’s innings, in which only seven runs were scored in front of the wicket. He had some luck as well, a leading edge six to third man off Aditya Dole, reprieved when Shane Warne reacted slowly to a caught-and-bowled chance and dropped by Dole at deep square leg. With Kumar Sangakkara’s poor tournament continuing, it was Yuvraj who provided some support for him. Warne was at his bewitching best in the previous game, but had no answer to Yuvraj today. First, Yuvraj muscled him over midwicket for a six, and two overs later clobbered two flat sixes and a four to take 24 runs off eight balls against the Rajasthan captain. The match turned in the next over from Dole: he had Yuvraj dragging a short ball onto the stumps and Jayawardene edged to a wide slip. That sucked all the momentum out of the Punjab innings, and they never recovered.Ravi Bopara pottered about before being run out after racing down the track for a second run which his partner, Irfan Pathan, was not interested in. Watson varied his length and pace well towards the death, and Siddharth Trivedi’s steady servings of slower deliveries proved hard to score off, so much so that Punjab couldn’t hit even one boundary in that period. The Punjab score looked insufficient, but it was not as measly as Lumb and Naman Ojha made it seem. The match was essentially decided after the fourth over of the chase, in which Lumb lashed fast bowler Rusty Theron for 20 runs to blast Punjab to 55 for 0.The template was set in the first over, when Ramesh Powar made a hash of a simple fielding chance to give away two extra runs, and Sreesanth followed that up with gift of a short ball that was pulled for four by Lumb.Sangakkara shuffled his bowlers around but to no avail: Lumb picked off the spinners with a bunch of sweeps and reverse-sweeps, while showcasing his full range of strokes against the quicks. The 100 came up in the ninth over when Irfan was caned for four fours, and Lumb was also eyeing his century. He was dismissed in the next over, but Ojha, who has been quiet when Lumb was blasting, took charge of the chase, and with the help of Yusuf Pathan finished off the game in the 15th over.
