Opinion: Rangers boss Steven Gerrard should raid Liverpool again for Curtis Jones

[ad_pod ]

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard should once again raid the Liverpool youth setup in January to secure a loan move for talented midfielder Curtis Jones.

What’s the situation?

The Express recently reported that although Rangers announced losses of £14m recently, there will be funds available for Gerrard to add to his squad in the winter transfer window, and the Liverpool legend is looking for a creative player and a midfielder, of which Jones is both.

The Gers made 15 signings over the summer, but Gerrard was critical of his side after their Scottish Cup semi-final loss to Aberdeen, claiming that they didn’t have enough quality to compete for trophies.

Two of those summer signings were loan deals from the Liverpool youth sides, with Ryan Kent and Ovie Ejaria making the move to Glasgow having worked under Gerrard at Liverpool, as Jones did in his time with the U18 squad.

Injection of creativity

Jones could be the perfect man for Gerrard to bring in then to inject some fresh legs and new ideas into his side after what is sure to be a busy and competitive Christmas period.

The 17-year-old was hugely impressive on Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States in the summer, which led many to speculate whether the Scouser would be given a chance in the first team this year.

The wealth of talent at Anfield though means the creative central midfielder has been limited to appearances for the U23 side and in the UEFA Youth League, where he has scored twice in four matches, but a move north of the border would allow him to experience competitive senior football at a high-level for the first time.

So, Rangers fans, would you like to see Gerrard make a loan move for Jones in the winter transfer window, or should he look away from his former club? Have your say by voting in the poll below.

Celtic fans react as Chris Sutton hints club should re-sign Charlie Mulgrew

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton took to Twitter to hint that Blackburn Rovers defender Charlie Mulgrew could be a good signing for Celtic following his performance on Wednesday night, and Bhoys fans were quick to react.

The Rovers captain helped the Lancashire outfit return to the Championship last term with 14 goals and a further five assists despite playing as a centre-back, and he carried on his goalscoring form in the 2-2 draw against Reading at Ewood Park by twice converting from the penalty spot.

The 32-year-old made more than 200 appearances for the Scottish Premiership holders previously before joining Blackburn two years ago, and with Brendan Rodgers’ current centre-back options struggling right now he would probably prove to be a decent buy.

Celtic supporters took to social media to have their say on Sutton’s comments on Mulgrew, and while one said “he would jump at the chance”, another said “he wasn’t good enough when we got rid”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Manchester United want more from Lukaku after Liverpool display

A resolute Manchester United gained a point away to Liverpool on Saturday in the biggest fixture of the English Premier League weekend.

A much-hyped encounter, it wasn’t exactly the most thrilling ninety minutes for neutrals but Jose Mourinho and his side will likely be happy with a solid point from a match they could’ve lost on another day.

A world class save from David De Gea to deny Joel Matip was the highlight, his outstretched boot denying a certain goal for the home side.

It was a day of frustration for some Man United players with Romelu Lukaku looking particularly out of sorts after his superb start to the season. All eyes were on him to put in a big performance but he managed just one shot on target throughout the entire game, which was saved by Simon Mignolet.

Manchester United fans weren’t pleased with the performance of their summer signing, believing him to be missing from the match for long periods and ineffective when he did get the ball.

Supporters took to Twitter to share their thoughts…

Paris Saint-Germain offer Arsene Wenger Emirates escape route

As reported in an exclusive by The Daily Star, Paris Saint-Germain have offered Arsene Wenger an escape route this summer if he decides to call time on his reign at Arsenal.

What’s the story?

PSG are ready to end their association with Unai Emery after just one year and have targeted a replacement that would certainly cause a stir on the European football scene.

The Star reckon they have already offered Wenger a deal at the club, a one year deal with the option of a second, if he decides to the quit the Gunners.

It’s far from a done deal with Wenger keen to stay at Arsenal for one more season and leave the club on a high, according to the report.

Is his time up at the Emirates or should he move on and embark on a new challenge in his homeland?

Should he stay or should he go?

Staying at Arsenal for one more season is both a risk and an opportunity for the Frenchman.

Some would argue that staying on for another 12 months would finally tip the perception of his time at the club into failure territory.

On the other hand, a successful season could see him leave the club on a high and be vindication for a long and storied service at the club that has given them stability and consistent achievement.

The chance to effect change at one of the biggest clubs in France could prove tempting but we reckon that, ultimately, the chance to bring major success to the Gunners may prove to be too big of a draw for him.

Five key players who could decide Leicester v Arsenal…

In case it still hasn’t settled in your mind, Leicester City are Premier League champions. Yes, the team that narrowly avoided relegation under Nigel Pearson are the best team in England. Well, they were.

Claudio Ranieri’s Foxes have broken records and shocked the footballing world in the last twelve months.

Nearly as big as their on-field achievements has been their transfer window work. Retaining all of their key players, apart from N’golo Kante, is astonishing in itself. They’ve joined the big boys and this season is their chance to prove that they are here to stay, to prove a nuisance to the ‘big’ clubs – who so often disappoint.

Arsenal are the next team to face Ranieri’s Premier League victors and it comes at a tricky time for Arsene Wenger. With the Frenchman dithering as much as ever, he is facing criticism from both the press and the Gunners’ fan base. He needs a win, but can he do it?

Well, these FIVE are the ones to watch and may just determine the result…

Petr Cech

Arsenal’s defence was, frankly, calamitous against Liverpool. Petr Cech did not cover himself in glory, but the defensive display in front of him was humiliating for Gunners’ worldwide.

Conceding four at home on the opening day of the season is bad enough and a clean sheet against Leicester might just calm the sporadic Arsenal fans this weekend. Cech, who will hope for a little more protection, will need to be at his very best if he is to stunt the electric Leicester attack.

Assuming Arsenal don’t right the wrongs of last Sunday, Cech will need to have the game of his life.

Ahmed Musa

Jamie Vardy might be the name most synonymous with Leicester’s title win, but their new boy, Ahmed Musa, is tipped by many to be the star of this season. The electric former CSKA Moscow striker showed glimpses of his talent during pre-season and will, like Sadio Mane did last weekend, stretch Arsenal’s flaky defence.

Of course it’s not all about pace, but, if paired with Vardy, Arsenal could get pulled all over the place.

Riyad Mahrez

Last year’s player of the year signed a new contract with the Foxes this weekend and that was possibly the biggest boost for the club since they lifted the title back in May.

Their Algerian right winger netted Leicester’s only goal of the game against Hull, but the burden against Arsenal will largely be a creative one. Tasked with splitting the defence and jinking through the tightest of gaps, Mahrez might even be double-marked by Wenger’s side to restrict his influence.

However, you feel that if Mahrez has a good game, Leicester will likely come out on top.

Danny Drinkwater

Drinkwater looked a shadow of his 2015/16 self in Leicester’s season-opener against Hull. If Mendy starts against Arsenal it may help the former Manchester United midfielder, but he will need to find his form of last season if Leicester are to enjoy much success this time around.

The deep-lying playmaker was often the man who produced the final ball to slot in one of Jamie Vardy’s surging runs. his role was fundamental to how the Foxes played.

Against Arsenal, space in the midfield will be limited and Drinkwater will also be tested defensively against the highly-talented Gunners midfield third.

Alexis Sanchez

Alexis started as the lone central striker for Arsenal against Liverpool, rather than from his more common position on the left-wing.

The sluggish Leicester centre-back pairing will hope to keep their defensive line deep – which may provide a challenge to Alexis – but, if there is space opening up behind the defence, Alexis could prove to be the match winner.

Suarez was selected by Bielsa for the first time since taking over as Uruguay head coach in May. The 36-year-old has not featured for his country since their World Cup group stage exit last December. The call-up sets an intriguing potential meeting with former-Barcelona team-mate and close friend Lionel Messi who is likely to captain Argentina when the two sides face off in La Bombonera in Buenos Aires on Thursday.

Suarez has been in outstanding form in Brazil this term with his 14 goals firing Gremio into title contention with four games of the Serie A season remaining. The Uruguayan's goal glut has led to speculation that he may remain Porto Alegre for the final year of his contract putting a strongly-rumoured move to Inter Miami and a link-up with former Barca colleagues Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba in doubt.

Daily TimesDID YOU KNOW?

Suarez and Messi struck up a close friendship as well as a devastating on-field partnership during six seasons together at Barcelona, winning four league titles, four Spanish cups and Champions League together before the Uruguayan was deemed surplus to requirements at Camp Nou.

Back your manager, recruit smart & trust the youth – Six lessons Chelsea can learn from Arsenal as Blues begin massive rebuild

The Gunners have left Chelsea in the dirt this season, with the Stamford Bridge outfit now preparing for a monumental summer

At the beginning of the season, Arsenal vs Chelsea would've been pegged as a potentially-decisive game in the race for Champions League qualification. Instead, on Tuesday, the mid-table Blues will be looking to snap an eight-game winless run to move back ahead of Roy Hodgson's Crystal Palace into 11th. Arsenal, in stark contrast, are aiming to keep their Premier League title hopes alive with a victory.

Going into the game, these London rivals are separated by an astounding 36 points, a consequence of their contrasting decision making on and off the pitch over the past 12 months.

Chelsea have now slumped to their lowest point since Roman Abramovich's takeover propelled them into the European football elite in 2003.

Arsenal have experienced similar lows in the not-so-distant past though, and their resurgence this season provides hope for Blues supporters who are struggling to envisage the club ever replicating their former glories.

During a time of pensive reflection at Stamford Bridge, GOAL asks what Chelsea can learn from their neighbours' success…

Getty ImagesTrust your manager

Arsenal fans used to be ridiculed for 'trusting the process' when it came to Mikel Arteta, but rival fans are certainly not laughing now.

While the Spaniard endured some hairy moments during the early part of his Gunners spell, his appointment in 2019 has – in the long-term – proved to be a masterstroke. For the first time since Arsene Wenger left, Arsenal have a distinctive style of play that is the envy of many in the Premier League.

Chelsea appeared to be following this example when they appointed the young and exciting Graham Potter on a five-year contract in September 2022. For years, the trigger-happy Abramovich had fired coaches at will, sometimes for the most modest of failings. Potter was supposed to be different – a holistic on-pitch leader to drive forward Todd Boehly's youthful revolution.

In the end though, he lasted just 31 games. Hamstrung by a truly bonkers recruitment strategy – more on that later – he departed with the lowest points-per-game return of any Blues manager in history.

Had he been supported, who knows? Perhaps Chelsea would've been tasting some of Arsenal's recent success in a few seasons time.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesRecruit smart, not big

It's hard to think of two top-level clubs whose recruitment strategies have contrasted more than Arsenal and Chelsea in recent times.

The latter have been a model for transfer chaos, splurging over £600 million ($752.2m) over the past two transfer windows and still ending up with a wildly uneven, bloated squad. This is evidenced by the fact that only fellow transfer market churners Nottingham Forest have used more players in the Premier League this season.

Arsenal, on the other hand, have one of the most efficiently-built squads in the division. Only three Premier League sides – West Ham, Brentford and Manchester City – have deployed fewer players than them this term.

By operating with a trim squad, every player who comes into the starting XI knows exactly what is expected of them in the system. We saw this in action when Gabriel Jesus was injured at the World Cup, with Eddie Nketiah and Leandro Trossard slotting in seamlessly.

It is not just in squad size that Chelsea can take lessons from north London either. Arsenal have also bought a lot 'smarter' than the Blues since Boehly's takeover.

The sensible pick ups of the likes of Oleksandr Zinchenko, Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale may not have attracted as many headlines – or cost as much – as Chelsea's various recent high-profile signings, but they have proved to be perfect fits at the Emirates Stadium.

Advocating for Chelsea to rein themselves in during the transfer window might well be akin to shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted, but moving forwards, its something the Blues need to do if they are to return to being Champions League regulars.

Getty ImagesIt doesn't take long to get fans back on side

For years, Arsenal were criticised for an apparently lacklustre atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium.

While the Gunners have always travelled loudly and in numbers, there was always some truth in the accusations that their new home often lacked that big-game feeling. This is not a charge that can be levelled at the Arsenal faithful this season.

The atmosphere at home games has been electric all year long, with the fiery rendition of their new pre-match anthem, North London Forever, typifying their resurgent spirit. This has had on-field advantages too, with the Gunners support roaring the players on to a goosebump-inducing comeback against Bournemouth this season that ranked as one of the greatest days in Emirates history.

Chelsea can only dream of this sort of atmosphere at Stamford Bridge currently. Boos have understandably echoed around the stadium at recent matchdays, with Real Madrid's visit the only occasion that has properly sparked match-goers back to life.

Having a flat atmosphere at home is a common problem in the modern game, but Arsenal's ability to rediscover that connection between fans and players this season shows that Chelsea may be able to turn it around quickly.

There is clear frustration with the board in west London right now. But if whoever takes over in the summer can get the players playing for the badge again, the intimidating Stamford Bridge of old could be back sooner rather than later.

Getty ImagesMaybe Chelsea don't need a 20-goal striker

The solution currently being touted to solve all of Chelsea's problems is them signing a 'natural number nine'.

Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen are thought to be at the top of their wishlist this summer, providing they can stave off the threat of Financial Fair Play penalties following two obscene transfer windows on the spin.

A quick look across the capital might suggest that they don't even need a super prolific centre-forward to kick on next season. Jesus, who has led the line for the Gunners for the majority of the season, has an impressive but not spectacular nine Premier League goals to his name.

His worth to Arsenal is far more complex than simply scoring, with his ability to facilitate, press and create allowing Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli to thrive either side of him.

Surely, one of the 101 forwards Chelsea have at their disposal is capable of playing a similar role next season if their wish of signing a free-scoring frontman doesn't come true?

Não me arrependo disso’, disse o peruano.
