Gabriel and Charles rip through Patriots

A devastating start spearheaded by Shannon Gabriel and Fidel Edwards set the tone for St Lucia Zouks’ seven-wicket win over St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in Gros Islet

A devastating start spearheaded by Shannon Gabriel and Fidel Edwards set the tone for St Lucia Zouks’ seven-wicket win over St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in Gros Islet. Gabriel was named Man of the Match after he combined with Edwards to reduce Patriots to 19 for 4 in the fifth over and eventually finished with a career-best 3 for 19.The Patriots won the toss and chose to bat on their CPL debut but got off to a rocky start after Evin Lewis dragged a full delivery from Edwards onto his stumps in the second over for a duck. Straight off a plane from England, Martin Guptill could only muster 14 as he flicked Gabriel to Kemar Roach at short fine leg.Orlando Peters was then dismissed for a duck next over. The Zouks made it two in two balls after Shane Dowrich began the fifth over by clipping Gabriel straight to Kyle Mayers at midwicket for two.Marlon Samuels and Devon Thomas staged a good recovery and put on 78 together for the fifth wicket. The partnership had produced 38 with Samuels on 20 when he hoicked Mayers into the air at deep midwicket but a sprinting Darren Sammy failed to hang onto to the catch despite a diving effort. Samuels went on to make an unbeaten 52 and added a further 50 together with Sohail Tanvir for the seventh wicket as a late surge took them to 149.The Zouks got off to a cautious start with just two runs off the first over bowled by Tanvir. Andre Fletcher ramped up the pace in the second by cracking Sheldon Cottrell for two fours and a six wide of long on in an 18-run stanza. Johnson Charles then got in on the act in the third with a four and six off Sohail Tanvir to make it 33 for 0 after three before another three boundaries were taken off Shahid Afridi in the following over. By the end of the Powerplay, the Zouks were cruising at 61 for 0.The lone bright spot in the field for the Patriots was CPL debutant Nikhil Dutta. The 20-year-old Canadian offspinner came on in the seventh over and should have struck with his third ball when Charles, on 20, went for a mighty heave across the line and produced a top edge to short third man where Cottrell fluffed a straightforward chance. Dutta was denied the wicket of Charles again in the ninth over, this time on 29, after he walked across his stumps and was pinned in front after missing another slog but a shout for leg before was turned down.Dutta’s luck finally turned two balls later when Fletcher mistimed a reverse sweep and the ball ballooned in the air off his gloves for a simple catch taken behind the stumps by Thomas to end the opening stand at 81 and Fletcher’s innings for 48. Dutta came back on for a second spell in the 13th over as part of an entertaining duel with Kevin Pietersen. Two overs prior, Pietersen looked to be settled after tonking Shahid Afridi over midwicket for six, but Pietersen had trouble picking the mystery spinner Dutta in his first three deliveries before driving Dutta over cover. Dutta responded by dragging the length back slightly with one that turned sharply to bowl Pietersen through the gate for 18.The Patriots could not find a way to dislodge Charles though and paid for the earlier reprieve. He brought up his 50 in 34 balls when he smashed Tabraiz Shamsi straight down the ground. Dutta’s first three overs went for only 15 but his figures were spoiled in the 15th over when Charles thumped two sixes over midwicket. Ross Taylor finished the match in the following over with 26 balls to spare.

Terry aims to re-energise High Performance unit

Paul Terry, the newly-appointed director of coaching at BCB’s National Cricket Academy, has said his primary goal is to make the High Performance unit a long-term programme

Mohammad Isam14-May-2015Paul Terry, the newly-appointed director of coaching at BCB’s National Cricket Academy, has said his primary goal will be to make the High Performance unit, a so far successful but discontinued training programme for elite cricketers, a long-term agenda. Terry came to Dhaka last week to finalise his deal with the BCB and will be in charge of overall coaching at the academy.”We are hoping that this [High Performance] is going to be a sustainable programme,” Terry said. “It is here to stay. We need to get results from it with people eventually going on to play for Bangladesh. The idea is to give the young guys, possibly coming out of the Under-19s programme, a pathway to the next level. Our idea is to put a plan, structure and training programme to give them the opportunity to do that. If we do that, this will be very sustainable.”In a bid to rejig Bangladesh cricket’s development programme, the BCB has decided to go back to forming the High Performance unit to fuel a players’ pipeline to feed the senior team. The HP unit, set to begin in the first week of June with a head coach to be named sometime next week, is a training programme first established in 2004 under Richard McInnes. Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shahriar Nafees and Mehrab Hossain Jr were in the first batch, but over the last decade the BCB has been unable to restart the programme. The National Cricket Academy, a residential training camp, was formed and run in a separate building and training ground within the premises of the Shere Bangla National Stadium but it has been operational only during the off season with mainly the Under-23 players. The HP unit, under the NCA, will be divided into three parts. The first group will have a group of 22, mostly young cricketers who will train for four months, but it is likely that domestic performers who are older will be included in this group. The second group will be fringe cricketers of the senior team who will be training around the year when they are not picked in a certain format or series. Here the coaches will work according to the instructions of the national team’s coaching staff. Sarwar Imran will work with the pace bowlers, Wahidul Gani with the spinners and Zafrul Ehsan with the batsmen. A few local coaches and foreign specialist coaches will accompany them from time to time. The HP’s overall goal would be to reduce the gap between the national players and the next batch. The third group will be featuring 16-17 pace bowlers, including Mashrafe Mortaza and Taskin Ahmed, as well as domestic performers and raw talents like Nahid Hasan, who is currently in Bangladesh’s Under-17 side but was also tried out for the Under-19s against South Africa in the recent Youth ODI series at home. The Under-19s, however, will be taken out of the HP or academy programmes. They will now be permanently based at the BKSP in Savar.Terry said he would work towards building relations with coaches and players, and not try a certain way of coaching that would be alien to cricket development in Bangladesh.”It will be stupid of me to say we will do it the England or Australian way,” he said. “My role is to build good relationships with the coaches and also the players. There’s obviously a lot of very good things happening in Bangladesh cricket at the moment. So I would be stupid to say I will do it my way because my way may not necessarily work.”I will be obviously blending in and know them very well. Hopefully the combination of different thoughts will improve Bangladesh cricket. A little similar to how the support staff is: a Sri Lankan head coach, a Zimbabwean bowler and English fielding coach plus Bangladeshi staff as well.”

Dhoni pleased with lower-order resistance

Despite failing to close out the match, MS Dhoni looked at the positives and reflected on the lower order stand that rescued India

Sidharth Monga at Trent Bridge13-Jul-2014This is the third overseas Test India have failed to close out, out of their last five. This wasn’t as clear-cut an opportunity as Johannesburg and Wellington were, but the disappointments are piling up. Before the series began, Ajit Agarkar questioned India’s ability to close out Tests away from home; many an Indian fan shares that doubt. However, MS Dhoni, not for the first time, chose to look at the positives, that the team at least got into a position from which they could force a result. When asked if it was a big disappointment that from a winning position on day three, India went on to rely on Nos 7 and 8 to save the match, Dhoni said: “That’s a part and parcel of the game, and it doesn’t really matter who has scored runs or taken wickets because at the end of the day it is a team game and you go with the strategy of winning the game. It doesn’t really matter if No. 11 is scoring the runs or No. 7 is scoring the runs. Overall, it is important that we have put runs on the board, and we need to defend that. But plenty of positives we can take out of this game.”One of the positives was the partnership between Ravindra Jadeja and Stuart Binny when India were just 145 ahead with four wickets in hand and two-and-a-half sessions to go. “That was a very important partnership looking at the game because we were not really safe at that time,” Dhoni said. “We had at least half a day’s play or more at that stage. Had it not been for that partnership we could have struggled to defend the amount of runs we had scored at that stage. That partnership was much needed.Dhoni: Not many of our players have the experience of batting under pressure and save a Test match if the need arises. Games like this really gives them the exposure•Getty Images

“The other good thing about that partnership is that not many of our players have the experience of batting under pressure and save a Test match if the need arises. Games like this really gives them the exposure and teaches them what really needed to be done. I feel it is nice that some individuals stood up when the pressure was put on us.”Binny was part of an experiment that meant India were playing only five batsmen outside Asia for the first time under Dhoni’s captaincy. He wasn’t quick at judging how the move went, although he said the only change he felt with batting at No. 6 was that he had to change into his whites earlier than usual.”The wicket was not suiting Stuart Binny’s kind of bowling,” Dhoni said. “Jadeja could use the rough on the wicket, so I was not really forced to give too many overs to Binny. So, overall I though it helped me to keep the bowlers fresh. Though Stuart bowled only 10 overs, I felt it was a good effort from his side. As the series progresses, we will watch him as he is someone who can swing the ball well, and can give rest to the other bowlers, and he will be more effective on pitches that offer some assistance to the bowlers.”The pitch was a soul-sapping patch, which annoyed the hosts no end because of its likeness to Indian surfaces, but Dhoni wasn’t happy with it either. “I always said that when you come to a country you want to play on wicket that’s the specialty of that country,” Dhoni said. “You know, there’s no fun in going to India and expecting flat wickets where people can score 200 or 250 runs. But it’s very good if you score a hundred on a turning track. When you come out of India, you would like the wicket to be slightly quicker.”

Graeme Smith calls for ICC leadership

Graeme Smith is settling into life as a former South African captain, leaving behind an international game that he says needs “leadership and direction” if it is to navigate its way through the current melee of political and governance issues.Smith’s final months as South Africa’s leader – a role he held for an astonishing 11 years – came with the country being marginalised on the world stage, firstly through the controversy of the abridged India tour and then by the formulation of the Big Three around the ICC boardroom table which left South Africa on the outside, nervously looking in, wondering what their status as the No. 1 Test team will afford them.”The game is facing a few challenges at the moment, whether they are good or bad I don’t know,” Smith told ESPNcricinfo in an interview with Mark Butcher. “Only time will tell. Leadership is crucial. The ICC need to show that and take the game forward, give it direction. There is a huge interest in all formats.”Smith has not opted to bolster his pension with a dash around the world playing Twenty20, instead committing to the intense county cricket schedule with Surrey. He acknowledged, however, that the financial rewards being offered by Twenty20 leagues around the world can often be hard to ignore. Reflecting on his time leading South Africa, Smith said one of his key principles was putting money to one side.”You need to have something that people want to be a part of for more than just money. That’s what we really worked in on South Africa, our cultural identity, what made us want to play for South Africa instead of chasing money around the world because that is a really factor in world cricket now. The game needs good direction especially from administration.”Whether Smith will ever have the desire to work in a cricket boardroom remains to be seen, but for now his playing days are not over as he embarks in the final two years of his Surrey deal after an injury-aborted start in 2013 when he required ankle surgery which sowed the first seeds of international retirement.”I think things slowly progressed last year. I had big ankle surgery, Gary [Kirsten] walked away from the job, a new coaching structure came in, Jacques [Kallis] retired, stuff started playing on mind. It was about having the courage to make that last decision. I’d been captain for 11-12 years which has certainly taken its toll. How I react to retirement, I don’t know. It’s hard to predict.”And he knows the Surrey job will not be an easy ride before finally hanging up his bat for good. “There are a lot of really young guys who need to grow and hopefully I can play a role in all of that,” he said. “We probably lack a little of the middle-of-the-road cricketers, those in the middle of their careers, so have a bit of work to do.”The club is trying to stay a little under the radar and let our performances determine where we go. It’s a club with a huge stature and we want to get our cricket up to that level.”

Uncertainty continues in Zimbabwe cricket

Zimbabwe’s domestic competitions will not resume as scheduled this weekend as the country’s players continue with their strike over non-payments. The fifty-over matches between the Eagles and Rocks in Harare and Tuskers and Mountaineers in Bulawayo as well as the four-day fixtures between the same teams which were due to begin on Monday have been cancelled. That means the impasse between the cricketers and the board has extended to more than a month. Zimbabwe’s players first downed tools on December 15, which led to a fifty-over match between the Mountaineers and the Eagles not taking place and two Logan Cup matches also being cancelled. At the time, national players said they had not been paid for four months, while franchise cricketers, whose contracts only kicked in at the start of the season, had gone two months without salaries. Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) said they could not “provide guarantees of specific dates” for payments but remained “committed to paying November salaries at the earliest possible time”.Players have yet to receive any money and have vowed to stay off the field until they do. “We are saying we won’t play until we get what we deserve. This has been going on for too long,” one player, who asked not to be named, told ESPNcricinfo.According to ZC, the domestic competition can’t resume because of fitness concerns after a long festive break. The board also said that they are still brokering an agreement on payment.”In a meeting in Harare last night to look at the resumption, it was agreed that January 18 is not feasible because the players, who have been on a long festive season break, need time to work on their fitness and match-preparedness,” a release from ZC said. “Zimbabwe Cricket officials told the meeting of the efforts that they are making to raise the money to pay the outstanding salaries and match fees.”Although the ongoing boycott meant Afghanistan’s visit to Zimbabwe had to be cancelled, there may be light at the end of the tunnel as early as next week. ZC is in talks with a potential sponsor and if the deal comes off, they could have the funds needed to pay players and resume local competition.Cash-flow is the root of the organisation’s problems and has been highlighted several times in the last two years, in which players have complained about numerous salary delays. It is understood they owe Metbank, a local financial institution, US$15 million and are in discussions to manage that debt. They have also asked the ICC to advance a loan of US$3 million to them in order to play.It is understood the ICC was only willing to consider the amount if they receive an audit from ZC explaining their financial model. While neither party could confirm if the loan was still in the works, Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor hinted at it when he tweeted “Hopefully @cricketicc can pull some strings,” on January 7. It is learnt that KPMG will be conducting an audit of ZC’s finances. Two days later, Taylor also urged his team-mates to start practising, an activity they have also boycotted, ahead of Zimbabwe’s next international assignment, the World T20 in March. “Two months before we travel to Bangladesh for the T20 world cup. Lets get training,” he posted.Zimbabwe have not had any international cricket since Pakistan toured there in September. A planned trip by Sri Lanka was cancelled because of lack of funds and the Afghanistan tour also scuppered. With limited domestic match-time as well, their plans for the World T20 have been thrown into disarray but if cricket can resume next weekend, they may be able to get back to on track.

Bangladesh's weak T20 bowling worries Mushfiqur

Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangaldesh captain, expressed concern over the failures of his bowlers to defend scores of 171 and 188 in the Twenty20 Challenge Series against Bangladesh A

Mohammad Isam14-Dec-2013Shamsur Rahman suffers ankle injury

Bangladesh batsman Shamsur Rahman suffered an ankle injury during the last T20 match between Bangladesh and Bangladesh A in Dhaka on Saturday. Rahman, who was a part of the Bangladesh team, twisted his left ankle while fielding and was taken for an MRI. The results of the scan and his fitness status will be known tomorrow

Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladesh captain, expressed concern over the failure of his bowlers to defend scores of 171 and 188 in the Twenty20 Challenge Series against Bangladesh A. Mushfiqur captained a side that lost all three games against Bangladesh A, including the final T20 on Saturday. The poor bowling by the senior side is an extension of a trend where they managed to restrict international teams to a score of less than 150 only once in their last seven matches. Bangladesh conceded 204 runs against New Zealand last month and were also hit for 190-plus totals on three occasions in the last two years. On Saturday, Mashrafe Mortaza and Rubel Hossain were blasted out of the attack, each conceding more than 10 runs an over from their three overs. Al-Amin Hossain picked up two wickets but he, too, gave away 28 runs in 2.3 overs. For Bangladesh, the more concerning performances came from Abdur Razzak, who gave away 45 runs in three overs, and Sohag Gazi, who was taken for 26 in his two overs.”The matches were quite one-sided so we are concerned, particularly about our bowling,” Mushfiqur said. “Our biggest problem was batting but over the last 12 months, we have improved in that area. We have scored 170-plus regularly. Our worry is bowling in the first six overs and at the death. We must work in these areas.”Bowlers will leak runs on such a wicket but we have to minimise the damage. We have to practise in these regards. Bowlers have to survive by bowling bouncers and yorkers, in particular. We have enough time to rectify ourselves in these areas.”According to Shane Jurgensen, the Bangladesh coach, the bowlers are yet to bridge the gap between practice and execution. He admitted there is some confusion within the bowling group as they seem to do well in one-day cricket but have delivered different results in T20s.”We had set up this week to put the bowlers in tough situations so to be fair on them, they tried hard,” Jurgensen said. “But we are still struggling to execute what we learn in practice.”If a bowler is confused from the top of the mark as to what he wants to bowl, then he is not in the right frame of mind. I think we have enough time to mend these problems, and yes, more matches would be helpful.”Faruque Ahmed, the newly appointed chief selector, said the batsmen, too, needed to have better plans.”I would consider these matches as practice matches, but I would have felt better if the national team had won one or two games,” Ahmed said. “Bangladesh A played hard to win all three matches, very easily. Mominul Haque and Nasir Hossain had important roles to play.”It helps the team to play these matches. I think the senior side lacked in batting plans. We have to play more matches to improve and understand the game, and prepare better for the next matches. The bowling wasn’t good today, probably because the wicket was really good for batting.”The three members of Bangladesh’s team management agreed that a few new players were staking a serious claim for a place in the national side. Jurgensen saw T20 potential in Muktar Ali’s ability to bowl accurately, while Faruque believed that Sabbir Rahman was a contender for the allrounder’s role in the lower-middle order. Mushfiqur, too, spoke about the cricketers he believed would push the national players.”We have guys like Farhad Reza, Muktar Ali, Arafat Sunny, Rumman [Sabbir Rahman] and Mithun Ali who have done well. We want these players to push us in the senior side,” Mushfiqur said. “We have more matches in the near future when we will monitor performances of these players as well as those from the Bangladesh team.”The senior side is likely to play another set of T20 matches in the coming weeks as the Bangladesh Cricket Board is looking to arrange another short tournament before the National Cricket League, the country’s first-class competition.
