Assam dominate second day with bat

ScorecardBipul Sharma’s 91 gave Himachal Pradesh the lead against Hyderabad•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

With Tripura all out for 136 on the first day, it was imperative for Assam that they continued to build their first innings total to gain a healthy lead. Resuming on 85 for 1, both Dheeraj Jadhav and Sibsankar Roy took the score past 100 but Roy could not kick on, falling for 19 off the bowling of seamer Manisankar Murasingh. This brought Tarjinder Singh to the crease, and with Jadhav, the pair put on a substantial 222-run partnership that all but put Tripura out of the game. Unfortunately for Tarjinder, he fell just one run short of what would have been his fourth first-class century. Jadhav then added 59 with new batsman, Niraj Patel, before he was dismissed six short of a double ton as Assam racked up 335 runs on the day to finish on 420 for 4.
ScorecardAndhra’s chances of securing a first-innings lead against Jammu & Kashmir rest solely on their bowlers, after the side finished the second day at 191 for 8 in Anantapur, still trailing by 34.Andhra began their reply to J&K’s first-innings total of 225 on a solid note as openers Prasanth Kumar and Srikar Bharat added 38, before Mohammed Mudhasir broke the stand. Regular wickets fell thereafter, including in two successive overs, ensuring that the Andhra batsmen failed to get partnerships going. For J&K, Ram Dayal, Owaish Shah, Mohammed Mudhasir and Parvez Rasool picked up two wickets apiece.Earlier, a late rally from No. 10 batsman Waseem Raza, who finished unbeaten on 27, pushed J&K’s total to 225 after a poor start to the morning. J&K lost two quick wickets, including that of overnight batsman Bandeep Singh, on the second morning and were struggling at 174 for 8 before Raza stitched useful stands with Dayal and Mudhasir. Paidikalva Vijaykumar was the most successful Andhra bowler, finishing with figures of 3 for 63 off 33 overs.
ScorecardBipul Sharma’s knock of 91 and contributions from Prashant Chopra, Sangram Singh, Rishi Dhawan and Vikramjeet Malik helped Himachal Pradesh secure a first-innings lead of 59 runs over Hyderabad in Dharamsala.Having bowled out Hyderabad for 237, Himachal’s innings proceeded in a stop-start fashion as quick wickets often followed substantial partnerships. Openers Chopra and Sangram added 79 before a flurry of wickets reduced the hosts to 100 for 5. Dhawan and Bipul then staged a recovery, adding 65 runs for the sixth wicket before Pagadala Naidu dismissed Dhawan and Aatish Bhalaik in quick succession.Bipul remained steady, however, and his 113-run, eighth-wicket stand with Vikramjeet Malik helped Himachal take the lead. Pacer Alfred Absolem, who finished with figures of 4 for 88, took two wickets in the 73rd over and the Himachal innings folded soon after with Bipul being dismissed for 91.Hyderabad reached stumps without the loss of a wicket but still trail the hosts by 19 runs.
ScorecardMaharashtra continued their trend of putting up a big first-innings total to pressurise their opponents as they piled on a colossal 635 against Goa – their second successive 600-plus total – on the second day at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium.Read the full report here.

Clouds remains for Trescothick and Somerset

David Hussey’s entertaining innings and some late order fireworks have put Nottinghamshire’s noses in front

These are tough old times for Marcus Trescothick. The batsman who has scored runs for fun throughout most of his career failed again as Somerset once more found themselves up against it in a Championship match.Almost unbelievably, the former England opener is still looking for his first first-class century of the season and his average, after 22 innings, is now down to 27.Trescothick must have come into this contest with high hopes. Not only did he confirm his recovery from an ankle injury, which saw him miss several T20 games, by playing for the seconds against MCC Universities on Wednesday and Thursday but he also indicated that his touch and timing were back in decent order by taking a double-hundred off the students. When it came to facing Nottinghamshire’s new-ball pair of Luke Fletcher and Harry Gurney, however, the now 37-year-old opener simply could not get going. He was watchful, gave himself a good ticking off after playing and missing on at least one occasion, but couldn’t find the one flowing drive that might have set him free.In fairness, Fletcher and Gurney deserved plenty of credit for keeping things so tight that only nine runs came from their first seven overs. And then, midway, through the eighth, left-armer Gurney forced Trescothick to push at one holding its line just outside off stump and the resulting edge was snaffled, low down, by Steven Mullaney at third slip.Off went the home captain to sympathetic applause. But a 27-ball, 29-minute innings of 2 had merely added to Trescothick’s string of low scores – a string that has seen him reach 50 on just four occasions this campaign. There are still five and a half Championship matches left, of course. And an on-song Trescothick could do a lot of damage in 11 innings. At the moment, though, there is no doubt he is struggling, and it doesn’t make pleasant viewing for anyone who has enjoyed seeing him at his commanding best.At least an early wicket did not prompt a Somerset collapse. That would have been a real sickener for home supporters who had already witnessed Notts’ last two wickets adding 108 highly damaging runs.Nick Compton and Chris Jones combined for an unbeaten 61 before the second of two heavy downpours resulted in play being abandoned for the day at 4pm. Jones, who scored a century against the Australians on this ground a few weeks ago, was the more fluent of the two although he was almost caught at short leg, off the face of the bat, for 32 soon after spinner Samit Patel entered the attack.Fletcher and Gurney had set the tone for Notts even before they got to work with the ball. The latter joined Fletcher during the first over of the day after Ajmal Shahzad had lost his off stump to Peter Trego when playing no shot. But if Somerset thought their job was done in the field with the ending of a 57-run stand, the visitors’ tenth-wicket pair made them think again. With Gurney looking anything but a rabbit at No. 11, Fletcher pulled and drove his way to a run-a-ball half-century (his second fifty of the season) and added eight more runs before gloving an attempted hook against Jamie Overton. With more rain forecast for Sunday, Somerset should not lose this game. But a team third from bottom wants to be thinking of winning matches at this stage of the season, not hanging on for draws.

De Villiers relief as SA finally edge one

The South African fielders rushed off the Cardiff outfield as soon as the umpires made it clear they wanted the covers on. Dwayne Bravo and Darren Sammy did not want to leave but were forced to.In the few minutes between the playing and officiating personnel walking off, the groundstaff walking on and the announcement that the match was over, there was only rain. And silence. And maybe some confusion. Not everyone knew that if play was interrupted after the scheduled close, the match could not resume. By the time they found out, South Africa were nowhere to be seen. Imagine the scenes if we could have spotted them.Would they have been jumping around, high-fiving each other with delirium? Would Dale Steyn, who took the catch that dismissed Pollard, give one his trademark, angry-man, fist-pumping celebrations? Would they have been whooping and dancing? Or would there have been quiet recognition?AB de Villiers’ press conference demeanour suggested the last of those. South Africa did not seem to celebrate their qualification to the semi-finals as though it was a victory. Just as well, because it was not. Their tied game against West Indies could have been a defeat had one ball gone differently and they knew that. For them, it was just relief and finally, a sprinkling of luck. “It feels great. We’ve been on the wrong side of these kinds of matches in the past quite a few times and I have been part of a few teams that’s been on the wrong side,” de Villiers said. “What makes me more happy is that I thought we played really good cricket most of the game today.”South Africa did not always bowl particularly well but conditions were tricky. Apart from the calibre of batsmen they were facing and the danger in missing a length by a fraction, the wet weather added a different challenge.”It had been raining the whole time, for the half an hour prior to when the umpires called it off, and that made it difficult to know when the umpires were going to call it,” de Villiers said. “It made it difficult because it was getting heavier, the ball got really wet and it became really difficult for me to communicate with the bowlers out there, it was windy and I thought it got quite dangerous and slippery.”De Villiers showed much improved leadership in the way he managed his bowlers, particularly Steyn, who lived up to his reputation as leader of the attack. “He is definitely an X-factor for us. I called on him a few times today, especially the last spell into the wind and he picked up a wicket,” he said. “He handled the pressure well and the way he gave his best for the team was very inspiring.”Perhaps even more inspiring for South Africa’s long-suffering fans who have watched them stumble in major tournaments in incidents as exactly the same as today’s will be that the team prevailed this time. The intent of their batting stood out for de Villiers. “I don’t think our batting can get much better than it is now,” he said. While they do not have any century-makers they have had contributions from everyone. “We know there is a lot of strength in our batting line-up and I am looking forward to seeing that come through in the next knockout games,” de Villiers added. Those matches are the important ones for South Africa, who have not won an ICC trophy for 15 years. Although he was not too boisterous in saying it, he believes the tide has turned and this was the start of it.”We are not the kind of team to hide from the fact that we lost important games in the past. But we didn’t do that today and we didn’t do that in the last game either so the last two knockout games in a row, if we win the semi-finals, need I say more,” he asked, cheekily, before laying down a gauntlet.”We believe we can win and we have really felt the support from back home. There’s no doubt in my mind, we will go out there and give it our best shot, play to our full potential and it’s going to be up to a few other teams out there to they and stop us.”

Northants close in on victory

Northants looked set to maintain the pace in Division Two as they closed in on victory against Gloucestershire at Bristol.

ScorecardAlex Gidman lead the fight for Gloucestershire but Northants closed in on victory•PA PhotosNorthamptonshire look set to claim their second Division Two win of the season despite half-centuries from Alex Gidman, Benny Howell and Chris Dent for Gloucestershire at Bristol. The hosts, trailing by 212 on first innings, were largely indebted to Gidman (87), Howell (53) and Dent (50) for guiding them to 280 for nine at stumps and an overall lead of 68.But the Northamptonshire attack stuck well to their task on an easy-paced pitch and there were three wickets each for Andrew Hall and Steven Crook as they closed in on victory.Gloucestershire started the day on 34 for 1 and, with no addition to the total, Dan Housego fell to the fifth ball of the morning when he was caught down the legside by wicketkeeper David Murphy off Copeland.Gidman and Dent applied themselves well to add 56 in 21 overs, but Dent then attempted to withdraw his bat to a delivery from David Willey and only succeeded in getting an edge on to his stumps. Marshall departed five overs later, caught at first slip by Copeland off Andrew Hall, and Gloucestershire went into lunch in considerable trouble on 111 for 4.The afternoon session started well for the hosts as Gidman and Howell put on 69 for the fifth wicket with few alarms.Gidman brought up his 95-ball half-century by cutting Copeland to the cover boundary and the county’s former skipper then took three fours in quick succession off Hall. He also hit off-spinner James Middlebrook for a straight six and appeared on course for a century until he pushed forward to Hall and edged low to Copeland at first slip. Will Gidman, Alex’s younger brother, was dismissed six overs later when he was caught behind off Crook. Gloucestershire took tea on 188 for 6, still 24 short of making Northamptonshire bat again. The visitors only had to wait one over after tea to take the second new ball, but Howell and Cameron Herring successfully saw off the shine with some attractive strokeplay in a partnership of 54.Teenage wicketkeeper Herring was dropped on nine by Rob Newton at backward point off Crook, but otherwise played impressively in only his second first-class innings.Howell progressed to a patient 142-ball half-century, with five fours, before he edged Hall to David Sales at second slip to give the South African his third wicket.Jack Taylor took successive boundaries off Hall, to midwicket and backward point, on his way to an unbeaten 30 at stumps, but there were still two more wickets for Northamptonshire to celebrate in the closing overs. Herring chipped Crook to Alex Wakeley at midwicket to depart for 32 and the seamer then bowled David Payne for a duck.

A measured innings by Steve Smith and a punchy one by Brad Haddin helped guide New South Wales to first innings points over Queensland on day two of the Sheffield Shield match in Canberra. After Doug Bollinger’s four wickets helped tip out the Bulls for 243, the Blues stumbled to 4 for 109 before Haddin added 125 with Smith to take their side to the cusp of the lead. While Haddin perished when swinging Nathan Hauritz to deep midwicket on 73, Smith held his nerve and his wicket, forming a useful stand with the captain Steve O’Keefe that has the chance to grow with the NSW lead on the third morning.Smith’s maturity was demonstrated by the pacing of his innings, playing the reserved partner to Haddin before expanding his array of strokes later on in the company of O’Keefe. Hauritz and Luke Feldman grabbed two wickets apiece for the Bulls.

Redfern keeps cool in tight victory

Derbyshire took another big stride towards promotion from Division Two when eighth-wicket pair Dan Redfern and Tim Groenewald steered them to a thrilling two-wicket victory over Kent at Derby.Redfern struck the winning boundary off Mark Davies in the fourth over after lunch to complete his fifty and take them past their target of 295 following a dramatic morning in which Charlie Shreck threatened to win the match for Kent.Derbyshire went into the fourth day as favourites needing another 127 with eight wickets standing but Shreck took four wickets to reduce them to 236 for 7. But Redfern, who survived a difficult chance to skipper Rob Key when he had scored only one, was well supported by first Tony Palladino and then Groenewald who made 20 out of a stand of 41 to settle a pulsating contest. There was no hint of the drama to come when Usman Khawaja and Wes Durston calmly batted through the first 10 overs of the morning to take their third wicket partnership to 102. But Shreck was rewarded for a tireless spell from the City End of the County Ground when he had Khawaja caught behind for 56 from 137 balls off the last delivery of the 70th over and then removed Durston with his first ball of the 72nd.Durston had scored 55 from 123 balls but Shreck moved one back into him to trap him lbw and then Richard Johnson went for a drive and edged to second slip in Shreck’s next over. Shreck had now taken three wickets in nine balls and the momentum was shifting towards Kent when Matt Coles got one to lift sharply at David Wainwright, who was caught low down at third slip for 2.Jon Clare pulled Coles through midwicket for four but then got a leading edge off Shreck and was caught at mid-off for 12. Derbyshire were now rocking but Palladino, who had bowled so well in the game, helped steady their nerves by adding 21 with Redfern who was striking the right balance between aggression and caution. He cover drove Shreck for successive fours from an over that cost 13 and Groenewald edged the fast bowler to the vacant third man boundary in his next over.Lunch was delayed by four overs to try and finish the game but Derbyshire finally sealed a 19 points victory that takes them 26 points clear at the top of Division Two when Redfern drove Davies for his fifth boundary.

Good start key for West Indies – Gayle

Chris Gayle, the West Indies batsman, has emphasised the need for a good start for his team in the upcoming five-match ODI series against New Zealand starting in Jamaica

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Jul-2012Chris Gayle, the West Indies batsman, has emphasised the need for his team to start the upcoming five-match ODI series against New Zealand on a winning note. West Indies are fresh from a Twenty20 series win over New Zealand in Florida, with Gayle in impressive form, having struck three half-centuries since his return to the side.”The start to this series is very important,” Gayle said on the eve of the first ODI in Jamaica. “From a personal point of view, I want to do well in my home town. I will just look at it as another game. I will look to give the team a good start, look to see what the bowlers are doing, and once I get set, look to capitalise and make it count.”Gayle admitted he’d been relatively slow to start an innings before going on to dominate, something he also experienced in the IPL. “I don’t know why that has been happening. If I get a bad ball early, that can give me the momentum to be more attacking. If that doesn’t happen, you had to adapt to the situation, get the feel and know what the ball is doing. Sometimes as a batsman, things go your way from ball one.”The track at Sabina Park, Gayle said, promised a lot of runs. “The pitch looks good … [it] should be a very good track for batting. I believe there could be some assistance for the fast bowlers early on as well and at some stage you could expect the spinners to come into play. I have played here many times and I’m accustomed to the conditions so we know what to expect.”The last time I walked off Sabina Park I was raising my bat after I got 165 for Jamaica against Windward Islands. That people of Jamaica have not had cricket at Sabina for a while so it is good to have cricket come back to Jamaica. I would love to get a hundred here and raise my bat again.”West Indies were beaten in their previous ODI series, against England, and Darren Sammy, their captain, said there were areas, even in the T20 wins against New Zealand, his team had to improve in. “We’re looking for consistency,” Sammy said. “For the past few series we haven’t started well. In the first game, we bowled a few boundary balls. We started off the overs well, and eased off the pressure in the fifth and sixth balls.”
