Leeds: Orta interested in Targett

Leeds United are interested in a deal to bring Matt Targett to Elland Road in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by 90min, who claim that sources have revealed Victor Orta is hoping to hijack Newcastle United’s £15m signing of the Aston Villa loanee this summer, by launching an offensive of his own for the 26-year-old left-back.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

The report goes on to state that both Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City are also keen on the former England U21 international, however, Targett’s preferred destination is thought to be St. James’ Park.

Orta must move

Considering how impressive Targett has been following his January switch to Newcastle, coupled with Junior Firpo’s struggles on the left of the Leeds’ backline following his own £13m move to Elland Road last summer, it is not difficult to see why Orta would be keen on a deal for the Aston Villa defender at the end of the season.

Indeed, over his 12 Premier League appearances for the Magpies, the £15.3m-rated full-back has been in fantastic form for Eddie Howe’s side, making an average of 2.3 tackles, 1.6 interceptions, 2.3 clearances and 0.2 blocks per game.

The £35k-per-week defender has also impressed in a creative capacity, making an average of 1.3 key passes, 1.6 crosses and 1.8 long balls per fixture, in addition to completing 0.6 dribbles and taking 0.5 shots per outing.

These returns have seen the player who Aaron Stokes dubbed a “tremendous” signing and James Hendicott labelled a “beast” average a WhoScored match rating of 6.99, ranking him as Newcastle’s fifth-best player in the top flight.

Meanwhile, over Firpo’s 19 league fixtures for the Whites, the £10.8m-rated left-back has been rather less impressive, averaging an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.59, ranking him as Jesse Marsch’s seventh-worst performer in the division.

As such, it is clear to see that the signing of Targett would be a huge upgrade on the 25-year-old Dominican Republic international, leading us to believe that Orta must do all he can to land the former England youth international this summer.

However, with Newcastle also appearing extremely keen on making the defender’s temporary stay at St. James’ Park a permanent move at the end of the current campaign, the Spanish sporting director certainly has a battle on his hands for the Aston Villa sensation.

KRL secure semi-finals berth

A round-up of matches from the fourth match-day of the One Day National Cup Division Two 2010-11

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Jan-2011Group BMohammad Yousuf, who was not included in Pakistan’s World Cup squad, scored 73 in a losing cause for Lahore Lions•Getty ImagesKhan Research Laboratories have sealed a semi-finals berth with a 45-run win against Lahore Eagles at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. The win takes KRL to the top of the Group B table with 10 points. Lahore Eagles have played all their games and now have to hope the other sides in their group don’t overtake them in the last round of games, to be played on January 22.KRL were put in to bat and reached a competitive total of 269 thanks to a combined effort by their batsmen. As many as seven batsmen got scores of more than 20, with Mohammad Idrees the only half-centurion. Aamer Hayat was the pick of Lahore Eagles’ bowlers, taking 3 for 38. Saad Nasim waged a lone war for Lahore Eagles in their chase, scoring 113 as the rest crumbled around him. Lahore Eagles ended up being bowled out for 224 in 49.2 overs, Nasim having scored more than half their runs.

Pakistan Television picked up their first victory of the competition in dramatic fashion, when their match against Peshawar at the Arbab Niaz Stadium in Peshawar was stopped due to bad light with them just one run ahead on the Duckworth-Lewis system, with one wicket in hand. Pakistan TV’s chase of 223 looked on course after Umair Khan and Ammar Mahmood’s 118-run partnership had helped them recover from 50 for 5. But Mahmood was out for 58, and three more quick wickets meant Pakistan TV were still nine short of the target with one wicket in hand when play was called off after 46.5 overs. Pakistan TV were adjudged winners by one run on the D/L method.Umair finished unbeaten with 94, and he was the only one of Pakistan TV’s top-order batsmen to score more than 10, as seamers Taj Wali, who finished with five wickets, and Riaz Afridi did the early damage for Peshawar. The hosts had got off to a shaky start to their own innings after electing to bat, but an 81-ball 73 by their captain Akbar Badshah, and useful contributions from Shahid Iqbal and Mohammad Rizwan ensured they got to a competitive total. But it wasn’t enough in the end, as Umair’s outstanding effort proved just enough to get Pakistan TV over the line.

Group AA tight bowling performance by their spinners means State Bank of Pakistan have one foot in the semi-finals, as they beat Quetta by 46 runs at the United Bank Limited Sports Complex in Karachi. The win takes SBP to 12 points, and the top of the Group A table. Legspinner Kashif Siddiq was the most economical of SBP’s bowlers, going for just 20 runs in his 10 overs, and picking up two wickets, as Quetta fell well short of the target of 239. Left-arm spinner Jalat Khan was also frugal, giving away 38 in his 10, and he and SBP’s other left-armer Nayyer Abbas took a wicket apiece.Nasim Khan had given Quetta’s chase some momentum with his 56 off 64 balls, and his 66-run partnership with Sabir Hussain put them in a strong position at 126 for 3. Once Nasim was run out, SBP’s spinners dominated, drying up the runs and chipping away at the wickets as Najeebullah, who made 42 not out, had to watch from one end while his team were bowled out in 48.2 overs.SBP managed to reach 238 courtesy of Rameez Alam’s 44 and Naved Yasin’s 36, and also some wayward bowling from Quetta. The Quetta bowlers gave away 24 runs in wides, as extras, with 30, was the third highest scorer for SBP.

Half-centuries by Asif Zakir and captain Mohammad Sami led a fightback by Karachi Zebras, and they kept their chances of a semi-final spot alive with a two-wicket win over Lahore Lions at the National Stadium in Karachi. Chasing 236, Karachi were in deep trouble at 130 for 7, after their top order had been rattled by seamers Shabbir Ahmed and Asif Ashfaq, who took three wickets each. But Zakir and Sami put together 97 for the eighth wicket to get them back in it. Zakir was out caught behind off Shabbir, but Sami held his nerve to take Karachi home. The win means both teams are on eight points, with Lahore Lions slightly ahead on net run-rate.Lahore Lions made a solid start to their innings after being put in to bat, with opener Abid Ali getting 47 and captain Mohammad Yousuf scoring 74, but, in a remarkable collapse, they lost their last six wickets for just eight runs and ended up being bowled out in 47.4 overs. The collapse was sparked by seamer Sohail Khan, who finished with six wickets.

Major changes ahead for West Indies, says CEO

Ernest Hilaire, chief executive of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), has said major changes are likely to be made to the structure of West Indies cricket

Tariq Engineer05-Oct-2010

Chris Gayle arrived in England two days before the Lord’s Test in May, 2009•Associated Press

Ernest Hilaire, chief executive of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), believes that major changes will have to be made to the management structure of Caribbean cricket in order to deal with the challenges posed by the modern-day game, not least the growing tendency for the region’s top players to turn down central contracts in favour of lucrative deals in Twenty20 tournaments such as the Indian Premier League.Consulting firm Deloitte Touche Tomhatsu has been commissioned by the board to compile a study of cricket’s changing landscape, and Hilaire believes that their findings will have to be taken seriously by the region’s administrators. “Once that exercise is complete, you will see some fundamental changes to how West Indies cricket is managed,” Hilaire told ESPNcricinfo. “Anyone who thinks we don’t have to change are just fooling themselves.”Hilaire said the board had asked the three players who have turned down their central contracts for next season – Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard and captain Chris Gayle – how to ensure such a situation does not arise again in the future.”Two of them have said they are willing to share with us how this matter can be dealt with,” Hilaire said. All three of them will be considered for selection for West Indies and the board will assume that they are available to tour at that time.Bravo and Pollard, followed by Gayle, turned down the one-year central contracts offered by the WICB last month. The contracts require the players to make themselves available for the West Indies team at all times, something the three players – all of whom have forged prominent careers in domestic Twenty20 competitions including the IPL – were reluctant to do.”I don’t know that we should necessarily condemn them or chastise them [for doing so],” Hilaire said. “I don’t think it is the right decision and I will tell them that.”Under the current rules of international cricket, those who want to play in overseas competitions, such as the Big Bash in Australia or the lucrative IPL, must get clearance to do so from their national board. Hilaire said the WICB has not received any requests from any players so far but the board is re-evaluating its liberal policy of issuing NOCs.”We need to be a little more circumspect. It is not ideal to allow somebody to turn up just before a Test match. It doesn’t make sense, but we did it. On the eve of a major series, we can’t have key players exposed to exhaustion or injury.”We want to know that when we are selecting players, there are some assurances that they will participate in preparatory activities and be at the standard that we need.”Gayle arrived in England two days before the first Test at Lord’s in May 2009, two days after his scheduled arrival. He was granted two further days so that he could squeeze in one more IPL match with the Kolkata Knight Riders .”We are not against players trying to maximise their earnings,” Hilaire said. “You should go out and earn money. You are a professional sportsperson. But there are other interests and we have to figure out how best to protect all the interests involved.” He admitted that it is unlikely everyone will be completely happy but believes it is possible to come up with a framework that can satisfy all the stakeholders in West Indies cricket.Hilaire said the board has not had any discussion on whether Gayle should be replaced as captain. The West Indies selection committee will be meeting in Jamaica in a few days and will select a captain and vice-captain for the tour of Sri Lanka.”The selection committee is empowered to pick a captain and should do so. We [the WICB board of directors] can only hold a discussion after we receive a recommendation.”Hilaire reiterated that the board is committed to the rejuvenation of West Indies cricket and is encouraged that 22 of the 25 players offered central contracts have signed them. “We have a new generation that are eager to play for West Indies on the international stage. They understand the importance of playing for the West Indies and it is an opening for us to build on that.”He said the board was focused on specific activities and programs geared at getting players ready for international cricket, as well working on broadening the base by facilitating more youngsters to take up the game. “There is competition from other sports more now than ever before. Post 15 [years of age] we should not lose players to basketball, football, tennis and swimming. If you don’t have programs, they will go into other sports that do offer programs.”The WICB also wants to improve its relationship with West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA), as the two organisations have to work together, but Hilaire said the relationship is “still a work in progress,” and that there will always be moments where the board and WIPA do not agree. However, the important thing, according to him, is that everyone agrees “that some direct and aggressive intervention is needed” to turn West Indies cricket around.

Wolves must land Ousmane Dembele transfer

Now that Wolves look set to say goodbye to winger Adama Traore with an initial loan move to Barcelona this month followed by a potential permanent deal being on the table for the Spaniard in the summer, this could pave the way for the Midlands club to spend the remainder of the January transfer window trying to secure a suitable replacement for the 26-year-old.

In terms of who they could look to bring in to fill the void left by Traore’s imminent absence, one figure that has been mentioned with a move to Molineux in recent weeks that may not be too difficult for the Old Gold to secure is Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele.

With Barcelona apparently telling the Frenchman that he must sign a new deal at the club this month or else he’ll have to leave, which has then led to Dembele saying in a public statement that he won’t give in to blackmail, Wolves could step in and work out a deal that would suit all parties and bring the 24-year-old to England and draw a line under his time in Spain.

Labelled as an “exceptional” player by Dani Alves, the winger has proven throughout his career what a capable attacking asset he can be by racking up 53 goals and 50 assists in 208 club appearances across all competitions including La Liga, the Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and the Champions League.

This could make him the perfect replacement for Traore given how he wasn’t much of a regular goalscorer for the Old Gold having found the back of the net on just 11 occasions in 154 appearances.

Having also been labelled as a “phenomenon” by former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi, Dembele could be tempted with a move to Wolves this month to test his game in the Premier League at a club aiming to secure European football.

Moving forward, with the January transfer window set to close on Monday, Wolves will have to move swiftly if they want to have any chance of signing the £27m-rated attacker and hope that their dealings with Barcelona over Traore and Francisco Trincao back in the summer will put them in good stead to secure Dembele’s signature.

Trescothick and Pollard down Sussex

ScorecardMarcus Trescothick’s first half-century in the competition this season guided Somerset to a seven-wicket Friends Provident t20 win over South Division leaders Sussex Sharks at Taunton. A crowd of more than 6,000 watched the visitors score 159 all out after losing the toss – Chris Nash top-scoring with 44 and Matt Prior making 36. Kieron Pollard took three wickets for 16 runs for the hosts and Alfonso Thomas 3 for 29.Somerset always looked favourites to reach their target in perfect batting conditions and did so with eight balls to spare. Trescothick led the way with 50, while Peter Trego prepared for England Lions duty by contributing 41 to a second-wicket stand of 82.Trescothick has been short of runs in t20 cricket – but he produced some trademark power shots in a 31-ball half-century, which featured eight fours and a six. Four of the fours came in one over from Dwayne Smith, a feat repeated by Trego off Yasir Arafat as he made the most of promotion to number three to also hit his competition best of the season.James Hildreth (37) and Zander de Bruyn (30) ensured there was no way back for the Sharks with an unbroken stand of 60 as Somerset made it three wins in succession, without big-hitter Pollard having to bat.Sussex had made a whirlwind start to their innings as Mark Turner went for 25 off the opening over, which included a no-ball for overstepping. Prior hit him for two fours and two sixes, going on to make his runs off just 13 balls and helping to take the Sharks to 57 for 1 in the fifth over. But amazingly five wickets then fell for 10 runs as Pollard and Zander de Bruyn both found themselves on hat-tricks, Pollard almost completing a lap of honour after dismissing fellow West Indian Dwayne Smith first ball.Nash and Arafat repaired some of the damage with a stand of 47 in 5.3 overs before the latter, on 24, lofted a catch to long-on off Ben Phillips. Chad Keegan helped Nash add a further 26, but the Sharks had lost too many wickets to really hit out in the closing overs. Even so, Nash launched two sixes in holding the lower order together. It was the fifth successive game in which Thomas had taken three wickets and his tally in the competition is now an impressive 19.

Leeds dealt Brenden Aaronson transfer blow

Leeds United’s hopes of signing RB Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson at all now appear to be slim, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Aaronson strongly linked

The Whites looked like having a chance of acquiring the 21-year-old’s signature earlier in the month, with numerous reports linking him with a move.

Aaronson has already matured into a key player for club and country, starting all six Champions League games for Salzburg this season, along with winning 15 caps for the USA.

However, it now appears as though Leeds’ hopes of signing the midfielder are bleak.

The Latest: Move dead in the water?

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones claimed the transfer is unlikely to happen in January or the summer, claiming that it has become a complex situation. He revealed:

“They might be able to resurrect it in the summer but, even then, it does actually sound a bit more complicated than I originally realised.

“I’m afraid, as much as they like Aaronson and as much as he would be a great fit for them, it’s just not going to happen.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-33/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Real shame for Leeds

This is an undoubted blow for Leeds, who genuinely looked as though they would sign Aaronson at one point in the January transfer window.

At 21, he would have been a tremendous long-term addition who’s already capable of making an impact straight away given his Champions League experience, giving the Whites’ midfield an injection of youth and quality.

Instead, it looks as though Marcelo Bielsa will have to eye up alternative targets in the summer, especially if Kalvin Phillips decides to move on.

In other news, Leeds have reportedly made an approach for one player. Find out who it is here.

Liverpool scouting Aguibou Camara

Liverpool could secure a major upgrade on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain by signing Olympiacos’ midfield starlet Aguibou Camara.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days have suggested that Jurgen Klopp’s side, along with Serie A giants Milan, have been monitoring the 20-year-old ahead of a potential move.

The report adds that the Guinea international, who is a compatriot of Liverpool’s Naby Keita, could see his price soar in the January transfer window depending on his performances at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Forget Naby Keita

With Keita struggling to live up to expectations at Anfield since his big-money move from RB Leipzig in 2018 – he has played 92 times for the club, scoring only ten goals and providing just five assists – a swoop for his international compatriot Camara could be a hugely exciting one.

The 20-year-old predominantly plays as an attacking midfielder but is equally capable of playing slightly deeper in midfield or even out wide on the right, like he has done on occasion for Olympiacos this season.

Christophe Galtier, his former boss at Lille, has previously waxed lyrical about his development and mentioned his versatility as something that makes him stand out – something which Oxlade-Chamberlain has shown at Anfield, too.

Galtier said of the young Guinean: “I found him very solid in his game, disciplined tactically. He arrived last season, I saw him play in the reserve team. I find him, at 19, having a certain personality in the game he doesn’t lose a lot of balls, he’s solid on his supports, and also versatile because he can play right or left.”

Comparing Camara to Oxlade-Chamberlain in particular sees the former come out on top, with the Guinea starlet boasting a far better passing accuracy, making significantly more tackles per game and winning more duels per match as well.

Camara’s all-action style could see him become a real upgrade on Oxlade-Chamberlain and also lead to Keita becoming a bit-part player at Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are eyeing this exciting Dutch star…
