Manchester United might want to seriously consider taking a punt on this Brighton star

Manchester United will be looking forward to getting back to action following the international break as Jose Mourinho looks to build on last weekend’s win at Burnley.

A difficult few weeks for United and their manager was put to bed briefly at Turf Moor, but more will be needed and on a consistent basis if the critics currently hounding Old Trafford are going to go away any time soon.

The summer transfer window turned into a frustrating one for United, despite the addition of Fred and young right back Diogo Dalot. Missing out on the likes of Harry Maguire turned out to be a big moment, and it would appear that those sort of deals not happening are bringing Mourinho and United supremo Ed Woodward to blows.

However, we at the Tavern think there could be cheaper alternatives out there, and one who we think fits that mould is Brighton defender Lewis Dunk.

The big centre half has been a model of consistency for the Seagulls in the last few years and has taken to Premier League football with ease.

Much like Maguire, Dunk honed his craft in the lower regions of football, and has impressed during his time under Chris Hughton at the AMEX, leading many to believe he can indeed cut it at an even higher level.

The step up to United is huge, but one Dunk could well make given the time and coaching available at Old Trafford. Dominant in the air and comfortable enough on the floor, Dunk could well go on to be a star for a team like United, he just needs the opportunity.

United fans, what do you think? Can Dunk cut it at your club? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Aston Villa fans react to huge injury setback for Kodjia

Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce recently warned fans that Jonathan Kodjia could be out of action for a lengthy period of time.

Now, it has been revealed that the forward will undergo surgery later this week on an injured ankle.

While speaking to the media about Kodjia’s condition, Bruce described it as the “worst possible news”.

The former Birmingham City manager also claimed that the Ivory Coast international, who was struck down after aggravating the same injury that he suffered at the end of the 2016-17 campaign, may not play again this season.

Given that Kodjia spent five months on the treatment table the first time around, the forward might be able to work his way back to fitness for the closing stages of the season.

It could prove to be a massive boost at that time if Villa are challenging for promotion.

Before the former Bristol City player suffered injury, he had scored once and provided two assists in eight Championship outings.

Villa fans took to Twitter after learning of the devastating blow.

Leeds United fans praise Jansson’s loyalty after latest tweet

Leeds United fans have experienced some turbulence in recent weeks, but they have since received some reassurance from one of their key players of the season.

Pontus Jansson joined the Whites on a season-long loan from Torino, but in January agreed to sign a permanent deal when his temporary one expired in the summer.

After failing to secure a playoff spot, speculation was rife that the defender could have his head turned by Premier League clubs.

His agent Martin Dahlin told Swedish outlet Expressen in April that his client has ambitions of playing top-flight football next season, but the player’s recent message on social media suggests that he will return to Elland Road for the 2017-18 campaign.

Following Garry Monk’s decision to walk away from Leeds, despite being offered a new contract, the fans could be forgiven for fearing the worst where their players were concerned.

There is always a sense of limbo during the time in between managers, but the supporters have been left feeling encouraged by Jansson’s comments.

Five images that summed up Tottenham’s midweek Wembley adventure

Pictures say 1000 words, or so they say. One image can tell the tale of a moment, ask endless questions and provoke long debates. Tottenham will rarely play quite as poorly as they did against Bayer Leverkusen, as their game was shackled by the German team pressing, disjointing their own efforts to harry the opposition high up the pitch.

Mauricio Pochettino will certainly have plenty to say about that performance, having witnessed his side so shaken for the entirety of the match. His substitutions could only do so much, particularly as almost every single player was playing below the required standard for such a tough opponent.

Leverkusen’s own poor domestic form has done little to stop their dominance of Spurs, with the Germans taking four points from their two games and entrenching themselves as the favourites for qualification, along with AS Monaco.

Now heading into a North London derby weekend, Spurs’ season could begin to unravel. Momentum is near non-existent after a run of abysmal results and the side looks worryingly short of ideas with the ball.

Nonetheless, Wednesday night’s heartache made for some brilliant photographs.

Spurs’ second match at Wembley this season and its not even the second half of the campaign yet.

That is, of course, because the national stadium is their Champions League home and the Lilywhites’ fans made a special effort to create a hostile atmosphere before kick-off.

Having been without Harry Kane and Toby Alderweireld of late, the last thing Mauricio Pochettino needed was another one of his successful spine from last season injured.

The rock in their midfield and ball retention king, Mousa Dembele, went off injured during the first half, prompting a change in approach for Spurs.

Get up, Dele

Felled in the penalty area, Dele Alli was aghast when the referee did not award him a spot kick.

Vincent Janssen was on the pitch, too, so it would’ve been the perfect opportunity to produce his party piece. Alli was a figure of anger for his perceived dive, but there was the slightest of contact – which could have seen the referee make a favourable decision for the former MK Dons man.

Summed it up

The way that Spurs conceded the opening goal to Kevin Kampl perfectly summed up their woe on Wednesday night.

As the ball clipped off the foot of a Spurs defender to fall to an unmarked Kampl, there was a sweeping silence across Wembley amid the realisation that their team are on the brink of another season in the Europa League.

Mountain to climb

Tottenham’s Champions League fate is now out of their hands. A glum Wembley perfectly reflected the mood of the players, who looked utterly dejected after a dire display.

A victory in Monaco is needed for Spurs to have any realistic chance of qualification and that looks a distant possibility after Wednesday’s performance.

Man City vs Chelsea player ratings: Julian Alvarez proves once again he's more than just an Erling Haaland backup as much-changed champions cruise to victory

The Argentine struck the only goal of the game in a comfortable 1-0 win for the triple champions against Chelsea

Manchester City enjoyed a Premier League coronation against Chelsea a day after being crowned champions for a third year in a row.

Pep Guardiola heavily rotated his squad for the occasion and Julian Alvarez again made the most of his opportunity to lead the attack, scoring the only goal after a lovely assist from Cole Palmer, who was making his first start of the season in the league.

Kalvin Phillips also impressed in his first league start, playing his part in the goal. The match at times felt like a pre-season game but even a makeshift City team with little to play for had too much for Frank Lampard's side.

When the full-time whistle went to complete a 12th successive win for City, thousands of fans got on the pitch, delaying the trophy lift.

GOAL rates Man City's players from a very happy Etihad Stadium…

GettyGoalkeeper & Defence

Stefan Ortega (7/10):

Saved clear chance for Raheem Sterling with his leg and then made an important block after Conor Gallagher's shot had come off the post.

Kyle Walker (6/10):

Captain for the day but was not as sharp as usual. Lost a couple of duels with Sterling.

Aymeric Laporte (6/10):

Dyed his hair blue to celebrate the title win and gave an assured performance, distributing the ball well and keeping Chelsea's forwards quiet.

Manuel Akanji (6/10):

Back in his usual role at centre-half and barely put a foot wrong. Was the first to come off but was nothing to do with his performance.

Sergio Gomez (5/10):

Struggled to get involved in the game and did little to show he should have played more often in his first season with the club.

Kalvin Phillips (8/10):

Had a lot to prove in his first league start but played really well, pinging balls from deep to create chances and battling to win the ball back, including for the goal. Unlucky not to score when his header came off the post.

Rico Lewis (7/10):

Involved in some nice link-up play and put in a shift defensively too.

Phil Foden (8/10):

Looked determined to earn a spot in the starting XI for at least one of the finals. Dominant in midfield and always involved in City's best attacking moves.

GettyAttack

Riyad Mahrez (6/10):

Not as incisive as usual and struggled to create much danger. Committed a blatant handball in the second half which led to an Alvarez goal being chalked off.

Julian Alvarez (8/10):

Led the line superbly in Haaland's absence, holding the ball up well and taking his goal superbly.

Cole Palmer (8/10):

Very impressive in his first start of the season, setting up the goal with a dazzling run.

GettySubs & Manager

John Stones (6/10):

Blocked a shot off the line which the crowd loved, even though the flag then went up for offside.

Kevin De Bruyne (6/10):

Didn't offer much of his usual magic when he came on in the 78th minute.

Rodri (6/A):

Not as dominant as usual but had little motivation to be.

Erling Haaland (6/10):

Had only one chance in his 16 minutes on the pitch, skewing the ball wide of the far post.

Pep Guardiola (8/10):

Gave the players who needed some minutes a run out but his side still managed to record a 12th consecutive league win.

Azhar rues batting 'misjudgment'

Batting collapses aren’t new to Pakistan cricket, but after falling from 32 for 1 to 152 for 7 in 37 overs on the second day in Pallekele, even Azhar Ali, the team’s vice-captain, could not offer an explanation

Azhar Ali – “You sometime hit a ball for a boundary and the same ball gets you out as well, which is part of the game. You can’t just say that we were careless”•AFP

Ever since the Galle turnaround, Pakistan’s batting has combusted time and again. Batting collapses aren’t new to Pakistan cricket, but after falling from 32 for 1 to 152 for 7 in 37 overs on the second day in Pallekele, even Azhar Ali, the team’s vice-captain, could not offer an explanation.Azhar, like several of his team-mates, was guilty of throwing his wicket away despite being one of the few batsmen settled at the crease. Before that, on a pitch that was not unplayable by any means, Ahmed Shehzad was done by his own remiss, and Asad Shafiq played across the line to be trapped lbw.Was it fair to call Pakistan’s batting careless?”I don’t think careless is the right word, but you can say misjudgment,” Azhar said. “We all were out there with a positive frame of mind and were very much focused but it didn’t work out. You sometime hit a ball for a boundary and the same ball gets you out as well, which is part of the game. You can’t just say that we were careless.”They (Sri Lanka bowlers) bowled in the right areas this time, again otherwise the wicket is still very good for Test cricket as it has everything for everyone. The main point we lacked today was not building big partnerships otherwise it could have been different scenario. We anchored small partnerships but converting them into bigger partnerships was the only thing missed. Small partnership in intervals looked easy for us for a while, but then again, we lost few wickets in the wrong time and we never got time to get settled.”The collapse undid most of the good work done by the Pakistan bowlers, who bundled Sri Lanka out for 278, as the visitors still trailed by 69 runs with just one wicket in hand going into day three. Before the Test, Misbah-ul-Haq had suggested that his team had their best chance of beating a weakened Sri Lanka side at their home, but Pakistan’s performance on Saturday did little to justify that belief. Azhar, though, felt the game was still open.”We still have a chance to beat Sri Lanka by trying to exploit the absence of big names in their team. But at the same time, whoever they have are very good players representing their country. We are applying ourselves with full strength to beat them but we have to be on top of our game.”This Test is still open and the closer we get to their score, it will increase our chances to pull this in our way. The third innings is always important and if we managed to get them out early, we are capable of turning things around like we did in Galle as well. So there is plenty of time in the match and we are positive about everything. From tomorrow, it will be a new day and we look forward to it.”Pakistan may sound optimistic, but at the moment, only Yasir Shah is on top of his game. The game may not be lost, but the momentum most certainly has.”It’s Test cricket because it test you in different sessions, and if we managed to pull ourselves together in the coming days and play our best cricket, then we can win this game and we are positive about this,” Azhar said.”The only problem we have had so far is that we couldn’t convert the smaller partnerships into big ones. It’s not like the pitch wasn’t good, it is equally good for batsmen, but each one of us have to apply ourselves and have to work hard to get the best out of this.”

Fiery Mandeep downs KKR in thriller

An 18-ball 45 from Mandeep Singh made the difference in a high-scoring, rain-curtailed game in Bangalore, as Royal Challengers Bangalore gunned down 112 with two balls remaining against Kolkata Knight Riders

The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy02-May-2015
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details3:41

O’Brien: RCB timed their chase to perfection

The penultimate ball of the penultimate over of the match. Umesh Yadav had his fine leg inside the circle, and Mandeep Singh stepped across his stumps to scoop the ball over the fielder. Deep backward square leg sprinted desperately to his right to stop the ball, but he had no chance. It had rained, and the outfield was a little slow, but this ball landed on a practice pitch and raced into the boundary.Next ball, Mandeep skipped down the track and looked to swipe a length ball through mid-off. He ended up edging it to the third man boundary. In the space of two balls sprinkled with a fair measure of fortune, Royal Challengers Bangalore had gone from needing 20 to win from eight balls to needing 12 from six.Such things happen all the time in Twenty20, but this was a rain-shortened 10-overs-a-side match. Even Ravi Shastri, interviewing the losing captain at the post-match presentation, commiserated with him, calling it a “lottery”.Mandeep, though, played a massive hand in deciding the fate of the lottery. He walked when Royal Challengers had just lost Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers in the space of six balls, when they needed 62 from 32 balls, and produced a stunning, unbeaten 18-ball 45 to power his team home with two balls remaining.Mandeep’s composure under pressure was fully tested, with only three runs coming off the first two balls of the final over, leaving 10 to get from four balls. He made room to get under an almost blockhole-length delivery from Andre Russell and carved him for a six over backward point, and pulled the next ball over deep backward square leg to send the Chinnaswamy Stadium into raptures.Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli had given Royal Challengers the perfect start to a chase of 112 in 10 overs, but when Mandeep walked in, their batting depth was under test. Kohli fell when 32 were required from 17, but before that he and Mandeep had taken 18 off a Piyush Chawla over to tilt the momentum their way.Rain pelted down almost immediately after Royal Challengers had chosen to bowl first, and delayed the start of play by two hours and 45 minutes. The reduction of overs meant this was now a contest between the power hitters from the two teams, but Kolkata Knight Riders didn’t make any immediate changes to their batting order.Gautam Gambhir put on 33 with Robin Uthappa at 8.60 an over, before slicing David Wiese in the air to point. Russell walked in, and immediately set to work, square-cutting Yuzvendra Chahal to the point boundary and smacking Varun Aaron for two sixes in the next over. Chahal dismissed Uthappa in the next over, but that was hardly noticeable in the midst of Russell’s clean striking. Two powerful straight hits off Wiese took Knight Riders to 86 for 2 at the end of the eighth over. Ryan ten Doeschate joined in the fun with a six and a four in the next over, off Harshal Patel, before a smart bit of thinking from Dinesh Karthik – who kept wickets without his right glove – brought about Russell’s wicket while the batsmen tried to sneak a bye.Russell had clouted 45 off 17, and maybe Knight Riders could have scored a few more had he been in the middle to face the final over. As it happened, Mitchell Starc gave away only nine runs – despite bowling a wide and a contentious no-ball – and 111 proved just within reach of Royal Challengers’ line-up.
