Shots of the day
There were plenty to choose from courtesy of Ross Taylor, but it was during the latter part of his innings that he showed his truly explosive qualities. Even with a long-on in place he drove Ryan Sidebottom straight over his head for six. However, his brute force was really shown with two slog-sweep-pulls that sailed over the deep square-leg boundary. On both occasions Sidebottom dropped on a good length and Taylor went down on one knee with a huge swing of his bat. The second one of these almost ended up on the top deck of double-tiered stand. This was hitting straight out of the IPL.Fielder of the day
England couldn’t hit the stumps for trying at Lord’s, with three clear-cut opportunities for run outs going begging. Today they had two in the space of three balls. It was surprising enough to see Alastair Cook hitting the stumps direct, although his catching has improved out of sight ground-fielding isn’t his forte. England’s real star, though, was Monty Panesar. He didn’t enjoy the happiest of times with the ball, but his laser-guided throw allowed Tim Ambrose the chance to whip off the bails with Daniel Vettori in the air over the crease…Schoolboy error of the day
…and that brings us nicely to the New Zealand captain. His dismissal will have had cricket coaches the length and breadth of the land squirming in anguish. “Ground your bat,” they will tell their youngsters until they are blue in the face. Vettori should have taken note. Coming back for a second he didn’t see the imminent threat from Panesar’s throw, then in an instinctive reaction jumped in the air as he passed the crease. As no part of his bat or foot had previously been grounded over the popping crease he was given out, one of the more extraordinary run outs you’ll see in a Test. “It was cricket 101, you slide your bat,” said Taylor. “I’m sure he’ll learn from that.”Fumbles of the day
It wasn’t the best of days for all of England’s fielders, however. James Anderson couldn’t get underneath a skier from Jacob Oram which swirled around in the strong breeze. After the run outs from Cook and Panesar, Stuart Broad attempted a third only to throw miles wide of the stumps, even out of reach of Panesar who was backing up. That was the first five of the innings, and England gave away another when Kevin Pietersen had a shy and Michael Vaughan couldn’t gather it at the stumps. Vaughan has never been the best in the field, even before his string of injuries, and there is often a sharp intake of breath when the ball travels at speed towards him. To complete an interesting day of fielding mishaps, Jeetan Patel had some major problems with an inflatable object. He chased it down to third man before the wind carried it off, much to the joy of the Old Trafford crowd.Repayment of the day
Daniel Flynn was ready to bat following his nasty blow in the mouth, but before lunch he started to feel ill again and was taken away for further tests. As payback for the injury inflicted on his team-mate, Kyle Mills almost sent Ian Bell in the same direction. Mills cracked a powerful sweep straight into the back of Bell’s neck as he turned for cover at short leg. For an instant it didn’t look good as he stayed on the deck, while the physio was hurried onto the field. But he soon sat up and, after a quick check, was back on his feet still under the helmet. By the time Iain O’Brien scooped his pull into the air, Bell was in full working under and steadied himself under the catch.Career-best of the day
Nothing can overshadow Taylor’s 154, but he wouldn’t have had the chance to get there if it hadn’t been for Kyle Mills. New Zealand were 250 for 6 with Flynn heading back to hospital when Mills, with a previous Test best of 31, came to the crease. Mills has always looked better than his average suggests and some of his driving was out of the top draw. In fact, he dominated the seventh-wicket stand of 89 and reached his first Test fifty off 74 balls. “I thought he looked a lot better than me when he came out to bat,” Taylor joked. “He hogged the strike as well, I’m not sure how many balls I faced, it felt like about two in six overs.”Accidental hero of the day
If it hadn’t been for a stomach upset suffered by Tim Southee, O’Brien might not have played this Test. It is a 50-50 call as to whether Southee was replaced for form or fitness reasons, but O’Brien justified the decision by removing both England’s openers. He trapped Cook with one that jagged off a crack into the left-hander like a legbreak, although replays showed it was high. Then late in the day he shifted a well-set Andrew Strauss thanks to a stunning left-handed catch by Brendon McCullum low to his left.
A round-up from the last round of group matches in the Friends Provident Trophy
Cricinfo staff 28-May-2008Midlands DivisionLeicestershire eased through by 13 runs on Duckworth-Lewis against Nottinghamshire in a match that finished just before 8pm at Oakham. Graeme Swann and Samit Patel both took three wickets to restrict the home side to 147 for 7 from 35 overs, but after several rain interruptions Nottinghamshire could not piece together what was in the end a target of 61 from 12 overs.Northamptonshire killed off any hopes Ireland had of a second FP Trophy win at Dublin with a 99-run victory that wasn’t enough to edge Nottinghamshire out of the last eight on Net Run Rate. Andrew Hall’s 72 helped the visitors battle back from 55 for 4 to 205 which was too much for Ireland who folded in the chase. Nicky Boje was the architect of their demise with 4 for 12 and fittingly he took the last wicket, caught and bowled.

South East Division Sogginess abounded in the south east. Middlesex beat Essex by 18 runs on Duckworth-Lewis at Lord’s, leaving Essex to head into the quarters on a winning note. Tim Murtagh and Dirk Nannes forced an early wobble under swinging conditions with some lift off the track but Ryan ten Doeschate’s 97 lifted Essex to a comfortable platform at 244 for 8. His innings included six fours and three sixes, the best of which was a delicate sweep that somehow carried over the rope, borne along as if by magic. The elements were hardly magic, however, and persistent rain meant Middlesex’s innings was a stop-start affair which was finally ended on 120 for 2 after 25 overs, with Billy Godleman on 43. It was enough for the win which denied Essex home advantage in the quarter-finals.Meanwhile, Surrey’s dead rubber with Sussex was washed out at Whitgift School, with Surrey on 189 for 5 after being sent in.

Fulham will not sanction the departure of Tom Cairney from Craven Cottage this summer.
What’s the talk?
That’s according to Reach journalist Darren Witcoop, who revealed in a post on Twitter that Marco Silva’s side have informed Slavisa Jokanovic that the 30-year-old is not available to purchase in the summer transfer window.
The journalist goes on to state that the former Fulham manager had made the central midfielder his top transfer target this summer, however, as a result of the Cottagers’ stance regarding the Scotland international, the 52-year-old will now be turning his attention towards Aston Villa midfielder Conor Hourihane.
In his post, Witcoop said: “Fulham insisting Jokanovic’s top target Tom Cairney not for sale.”
Fans surely buzzing
Considering just how important a part of the Fulham side Cairney has been in recent years, the news that the Championship side are refusing to sell the 30-year-old this summer, particularly to one of their most likely promotion rivals next season, is sure to have left fans of the club buzzing.
Indeed, while a knee injury kept the midfielder sidelined for a great deal of the club’s Premier League campaign last season, the £8.1m-rated man nevertheless impressed over his ten Premier League appearances, scoring one goal, registering one assist and creating one big chance for his teammates, as well as making an average of 1.7 key passes and taking 1.2 shots per game.
These returns saw the man Scott Parker dubbed an “outstanding” player earn an average SofaScore match rating of 7.28, ranking him as the club’s best performer in the top flight of English football, albeit with a limited sample size of fixtures played in.
However, the Scot also proved his quality over 38 Championship appearances in the season before last, scoring eight goals, providing three assists and creating six big chances for his teammates, with these returns seeing him earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.12 – the second-best rating of any Fulham player that year.
As such, it is quite clear to see why Fulham are reluctant to allow their club captain to leave Craven Cottage this summer, as the midfielder’s presence in the side very much appears to bring the Cottagers a great deal of success.

Hampshire batsman Derek Kenway has stunned his home town club by leaving so he can develop his wicketkeeping and his batting on a ‘better wicket’.
Daily Echo reporter11-Sep-2002Hampshire batsman Derek Kenway has stunned his home town club by leaving so he can develop his wicketkeeping and his batting on a ‘better wicket’.Botley-based Kenway, 24, was under contract until the end of the 2004 season but yesterday he handed in a written request to leave, which was accepted. He said: “The main reason I’ve decided to leave is because I haven’t had the chance to keep wicket since I returned from the England Academy.”I love Hampshire Cricket to death and it was not an easy decision. It’s my home town club and I’ve got a lot of friends here but the wicket helped me make my mind up.”The Rose Bowl isn’t the greatest place to bat at the moment and I don’t know how long it will take to settle down.”I don’t want to regret anything at the end of my career so I’ve decided that now is the right time to move on. I’m looking for a club that will give me one-day wicketkeeping duties as well as being a frontline batsman on a very good batting wicket.”I’m not going to get that at Hampshire. Iain Brunnschweiler, Nic Pothas and Adie Aymes are all top quality wicketkeepers and I need a new challenge – a kick up the backside.”After Hampshire reluctantly agreed to Kenway’s request, director of cricket Tim Tremlett said: “We’re sorry to lose a player of Derek’s potential but we don’t want to keep an unhappy player.”Kenway arrived back from his year with the England Academy in March determined to challenge for a place in the England one-day side as a wicketkeeper-batsman.But, after spending last season as Hampshire’s gloveman in the Norwich Union League, he was replaced by Nic Pothas behind the stumps. Then, at the beginning of July, Fareham-born Kenway was dropped from the championship side after the draw with Sussex, having scored 238 runs at a disappointing average of 18.30.Like most of his teammates, he struggled for runs on a Rose Bowl track that cost the club eight championship points. He has not played championship cricket for more than two months and will now leave the county he represented at schoolboy level with a first class batting average of 31 – and a lot of good memories.Kenway, who attended Botley primary and St George’s secondary schools, has also been left out of the last six NUL games but is adamant that was not the reason to look for pastures new.”I didn’t deserve to get back in the side,” he admitted.Kenway made his Hampshire debut in 1997 but his annus mirabilis was 1999, the year he scored his maiden hundred and hit 1,000 first class runs.It was a purple patch in July last year, one month after he had been awarded his county cap, that helped secure his place on the Academy.Kenway followed up a career best 166 against Nottinghamshire at The Rose Bowl with a spectacular 70 in the win against AustraliaHampshire will reveal which out of contract players will be released early next week.Giles White, Jason Laney, Alan Mullally, Iain Brunnschweiler and James Hamblin are among those whose deals expire at the end of the month.
Marcus Bent has backed Everton to cash in on James Rodriguez during the summer transfer window.
The Colombia international made the move to Goodison Park from Spanish giants Real Madrid last September, reportedly for no transfer fee, linking up with Carlo Ancelotti for the second time in his career.
Rodriguez’s arrival excited Everton’s fans, but the 2014 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot winner saw his progress on Merseyside hampered by a string of injuries.
As a result, the ex-Bayern Munich loanee was restricted to just 26 appearances in his maiden campaign with the Toffees.
Rodriguez has now seen Ancelotti, who was a key reason for him agreeing to the move, depart Goodison Park in favour of a return to Real Madrid following Zinedine Zidane’s resignation.
Rafa Benitez has been appointed as the Italian’s successor despite his Liverpool links and ex-Toffees striker Bent feels it makes sense to allow Rodriguez to move on after a frustrating campaign in the Premier League.
Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Bent said: “He wasn’t consistent enough because of the injuries last season, but there’s going to be a price on his head now.
“Obviously, if they cash in you know they are going to make some money back on him.”

A source from Tottenham Hotspur has dropped a big update on their pursuit of Antonio Conte.
The Lowdown: Tottenham eye new manager
Following the departure of Jose Mourinho just before the 1-0 Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City, Spurs have been looking for a new permanent manager to take them forward into next season.
Ryan Mason was only in interim charge in North London until the end of the 2020/21 term, and so now the manager search continues into the summer.
The Latest: Conte to Tottenham update
As per Football Insider, the Lilywhites are growing increasingly confident that they will appoint Antonio Conte as their next manager after some late-night discussions.
A THFC source has allegedly told the news outlet that the former Chelsea and Inter Milan coach is now the clear frontrunner for the job, and there is even hope that he could be unveiled in the next few days.
He has been offered a long-term deal and talked about personal terms for a contract worth more than £10m-a-year, in addition to a potential transfer kitty.
The Verdict: Nobody better available
There is no better manager available to Tottenham right now than Conte, and so they should be looking to take on the opportunity to hire him while it is still there.
There is no doubt that if other high-profile jobs become available, the Italian would be high on many club’s shortlists given that he is currently out of the job and boasts a very impressive CV.
Conte has just come from a Serie A title win with Inter, thus ending the domestic dominance of Juventus in the league, and has also won league titles with both the Old Lady and Chelsea (Transfermarkt).
The 51-year-old also has that added experience of managing in the Premier League, and with no attachment to any other clubs at the moment, Spurs may not get a better chance to hire a manager of his quality.
