Derbyshire pair Chris Rogers and Wayne Madsen notched a new club record openingpartnership against Northamptonshire as the visitors took complete control onday two at Wantage Road.Skipper Rogers returned to haunt his former employers by notching an impressive141 while South African right-hander Madsen ended the day unbeaten on 163. Rogers spent two seasons in Northamptonshire colours in 2006-07 but oldfriendships were put out of the window as he and Madsen passed the previousDerbyshire best against Northants, 216, set by Alan Hill and John Wright back in1979.Nicky Boje and James Middlebrook threatened a Northants revival with a wicketapiece in quick succession just before the tea interval but Madsen and PaulBorrington (41 not out) easily saw Derbyshire through to a commanding positionat the close.Derbyshire began the day 163 runs behind Northants on 57-0 with Australianone-Test-wonder Rogers resuming on 31 and Madsen on 17. The opening pair were untroubled in reaching their first hundred partnership of the season in the 30th over and Rogers was the first to pass 50 with a four through mid-wicket from his 84th ball.Madsen brought up his patient half-century in near-identical fashion four overslater in 123 balls. With the hosts’ attack toiling, the only half chance came when wicketkeeper Paul Harrison could not quite hold on to a sharp catch from Rogers offMiddlebrook and the partnership had grown to 163 by lunch.Rogers then coasted to his century from 170 balls and he brought up the 200partnership with the following ball. Middlebrook then thought he had snared Madsen with a sharp catch at short leg from Vishal Tripathi but his appeals fell on death ears. And Madsen compounded Middlebrook’s misery when he had the honour of settingthe new record with a four through extra cover before hitting a single in the63rd over to put Derbyshire ahead. The former KwaZulu-Natal man went on to make his ton in 213 balls, includingone six smashed straight down the ground off Boje. Middlebrook was the man to finally break up the partnership in the 74th over, trapping Rogers lbw to bring his superb innings to an end.Northants claimed a second wicket in the next over when Garry Park, who facedseven balls without scoring, edged Boje to Andrew Hall at slip. But any thoughts of a home side fightback were quickly extinguished by Paul Borrington and Madsen whose partnership of 103 ensured Derbyshire ended the day with an innings victory in their sights, 157 runs ahead going into day three.

The Blues finished on 4 for 245 to gain a 410-run lead after Khawaja breezed to 89 off 99 balls and Hughes posted 84, becoming the season’s leading scorer with 936, during a stand of 163.Tasmania were dismissed for 303 in the second session to fall 165 behind on first innings during a match they must win to stay in contention for the final. The Blues are out already and are trying to end the hopes of the third-placed Tigers.Trent Copeland’s 5 for 56, his third five-wicket haul in his opening four games, helped finish off Tasmania, who resisted through Xavier Doherty (48) and James Faulkner (40). Steven Smith (3 for 99) and Mitchell Starc combined for the rest of the wickets before the Blues chose not to enforce the follow-on.Hughes was bowled by Doherty while Khawaja went the same way to leave their side at 3 for 185. Smith chipped in with 36 off 23 and Peter Forrest (26) finished the day with a six off Doherty, who had 3 for 76.

Devlin drops Kyogo injury update

Celtic have been handed a huge boost concerning the injury sustained by Kyogo Furuhashi last week.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to Kieran Devlin, with The Athletic journalist revealing in a recent Q&A that the centre-forward’s hamstring injury picked up in the 3-2 Europa League win over Real Betis is not as bad as first feared.

He then went on to state that the 26-year-old even had tests before Sunday’s 1-0 win over Motherwell to see if he was fit enough to play a part in the fixture.

Speaking about the Japan international’s current fitness levels, Devlin said: “Kyogo’s injury is not as bad as feared.”

Fans will be delighted

Considering just how crucial a part of the Celtic side Kyogo has already become since his £4.6m move to Glasgow this summer, the news that the striker could be set to make a return to first-team action against Ross County on Wednesday evening, or, if not, in the League Cup final against Hibernian this weekend, is sure to have left Bhoys fans delighted.

Indeed, over his 13 Premiership appearances so far this season, the £1.8m-rated centre-forward has already scored eight goals, provided two assists and created four big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.2 shots and making 1.2 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the £18k-per-week man average a SofaScore match rating of 7.07, ranking him as Celtic’s joint 10th-best performer in the Scottish top flight – of players who remain in Ange Postecoglou’s first-team squad.

The Japanese striker has also scored five goals, registered three assists and created two big chances over his five appearances in the Europa League, and bagged a further four goals over six Europa League qualifying and League Cup fixtures – taking his total for the season to 14 strikes and five assists in just 24 games.

As such, the news of Kyogo’s rapid return will undoubtedly provide Celtic’s chances of winning their first trophy of the Postecoglou era on Sunday with a considerable boost, something that will certainly delight everyone involved with the club.

Jennings banking on improved Indian players

Royal Challengers Bangalore coach Ray Jennings is confident the team could cope despite missing Kevin Pietersen and Ross Taylor

Siddarth Ravindran02-Mar-2010Royal Challengers Bangalore will be a touch short on batting firepower for the first half of the IPL due to the absence of some of their big-hitting foreign stars, but their coach Ray Jennings was confident the team could cope despite missing Kevin Pietersen and Ross Taylor.Pietersen will be busy with England’s Tests against Bangladesh until March 24 and Taylor will be occupied by the series against Australia until the end of the month. “It’s is an issue when you miss the likes of Taylor and KP, but you know what I’m a positive guy,” said Jennings after supervising a two-and-a-half hour training session at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. “I’m notgoing to look at that, they arrive on the first of April and so be it, I’ve got to start finding another Kevin Pietersen in the stands, or turning some of our players like [Manish] Pandey or [Virat] Kohli into a Pietersen.”While some of the foreign players will miss parts of the tournament, Jennings was pleased with the progress of several of the Indian players in the squad, such as fast bowlers Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun who were the leading wicket-takers in this season’s Ranji Trophy.Virat Kohli, who has started to turn in some impressive performances with the national team, was another member whose development has heartened the coach. Jennings, who first saw Kohli during the 2008 Under-19 World Cup, identified him as someone who could lead the national side in the years ahead.”I thought he was unfocussed [in 2008], I sat him down during the IPL in South Africa, and I said you know what, I’m not going to accept certain things,” Jennings said. “He’s responded to me, in October I said to him he needs to start setting standards for himself, because I see himas a future Indian captain. I have watched him in the South African series, he’s become a very organised human being, he’s settled down, he’s not going over the top.”Kohli wasn’t at his best last October during the Champions League Twenty20, whereBangalore failed to make the semi-finals. Jennings, however, said that his side had actually played better in the Champions League than in the IPL, where they finished as runners-up. “Don’t judge results by the trophy,” he said. “Because I thought we played better cricket in October than in South Africa, we scored 180 three times. The playing and overall unit wasbetter.”The IPL returns to India this season after the competition was held in South Africa in 2009 because security of players couldn’t be guaranteed due to Indian general elections taking place at the same time as the tournament. Over the past few weeks, several player unions have raisedconcerns over player safety, but Jennings said he had no worries about coming to India. “From my side I have no problem with India, it’s a good place to come, I trust the bosses in what they are doing,” he said. “I’m very positive about it, from my side I’m encouraging the players to behere on time, and I have no negative feedback from the players.”

Man Utd enter race for Luis Diaz

Manchester United have reportedly entered the race to sign Porto forward Luis Diaz as new interim manager Ralf Rangnick looks to make his mark in the January transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, the Red Devils are of several European heavyweights interested in snapping up the highly-rated 24-year-old, with Juventus, Bayern Munich and Liverpool also listed as potential suitors.

The report states that Porto’s exit from the Champions League group stage could tempt them into selling their prized asset over the winter, although United’s fierce rivals from Merseyside are thought to be leading the chase.

Previous reports indicated he may not leave for less than €50m (£42m).

Ralf Rangnick would love him

Since arriving at the Estadio do Dragao from his homeland back in 2019, the Colombia international has quickly established himself as a key player for the Dragons.

In 107 appearances for Sergio Conceicao’s charges, Diaz has bagged 38 goals and provided a further 16 assists for his teammates, playing a pivotal part in their domestic double in 2019/20.

His impressive performances at club level have earned the creative talent 31 caps for his country, and he featured heavily for his nation in last summer’s Copa America, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with four strikes.

And Diaz has elevated his game to new heights in the current campaign. He recently added another superb striking to an already impressive collection with a screamer in against Vitoria Guimaraes.

The beautiful goal was perfectly summed up by Marino Peixoto, a Portuguese football enthusiast, who took to social media to laud the ‘frightening’ South American’s impressive talents.

“The rate at which Luís Diaz is churning out otherworldly performances coupled with his ability to score screamers like this on a consistent basis is genuinely frightening,” he wrote. “Only a matter of time before somebody pays an astronomical fee for him.”

Furthermore, quotes from Sergio Oliveira on the forward paint him in an extremely positive light too: “I don’t have to answer, we know his qualities, apart from the human level he is also extraordinary on a technical level.”

With Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba all out of contract at the conclusion of 2021/22, it’s likely that Rangnick will need some attacking reinforcements over the next couple of transfer windows.

And Diaz could be the ideal candidate to continue the progression being made in the red half of Manchester under the renowned 63-year-old tactician.

Over the last few years, the £22.5m-rated magician has cultivated a reputation for being an elite-level dribbler who is capable of playing defence-splitting passes while also being able to finish with alarming regularity.

Those are a set of frightening and quite frankly jaw-dropping skills that Rangnick would surely love to have at his disposal, meaning a move could be on the cards over the winter window.

And, in other news…Rangnick must seal Man Utd move for £46k-p/w “phenomenon”, he is “out of the ordinary”

West Ham must move for Gleison Bremer

West Ham United have been linked with a move for Torino defender Gleison Bremer ahead of the January transfer window, with David Moyes desperate to reinforce his depleted backline.

What’s the story?

According to Italian outlet Torino Granata, the Hammers are one of several sides keen to secure the highly-rated 24-year-old’s signature, with Liverpool, Chelsea, Napoli, AC Milan and Juventus all listed as potential suitors.

The report claims that the Serie A outfit’s current £95m debt is a major factor behind the Brazilian potentially leaving Turin over the coming months, meaning an imminent exit could be on the cards.

David Moyes can solve West Ham’s injury crisis

After arriving in Italian football from his homeland back in 2018, the South American has made a big impact at Torino, scoring 12 goals and providing a further five assists in 93 appearances for the Bulls.

Bremer enjoyed a real breakout campaign during 2020/21, though, playing a pivotal part as his side narrowly avoided relegation from the top-flight. And he’s gone from strength to strength in the current campaign.

As per WhoScored, the centre-back has averaged 3.5 interceptions per league game, a whopping 3.9 clearances and 0.7 blocks, while also winning 3.8 aerial duels, outperforming his teammates in each metric.

After achieving an overall rating of 7.32 out of 10 – comfortably outperforming all of his colleagues – Bremer has been labelled as the ‘best defender in Serie A’ this season by Italian football expert Carlo Garganese.

“Bremer has been highly-rated for a while, with the Brazilian heavily linked with a move to the Premier League last season,” wrote Garganese. “However, it is this season where he has truly exploded and demonstrated that he is certainly ready to join a big club.”

“The 24-year-old has undoubtedly been the best defender in Serie A in the first half of the season, despite playing for a mid-table Torino side. The centre back boasts excellent pace, is aggressive and is superb in the air.”

With first-choice centre-backs Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma set for extended spells on the sidelines due to serious injuries, Moyes needs to invest in that position over the winter window.

As a result, a move for Bremer, who has been described as “incredible” in the past by former Torino manager Davide Nicola, makes sense for several reasons.

The £13.5m-rated beast has showcased his talent in a top league over an extended period of time, would be available as a reasonable price and would instantly solve West Ham’s injury crisis at the back.

It remains to be seen whether Moyes and co. follow up their apparent interest in Bremer with a formal offer, but it’s certainly something the capital club’s hierarchy should carefully consider.

And, in other news…Moyes can seal West Ham masterclass with move for “unbelievable” £7.2m-rated “monster”

Aston Villa confirm backroom staff arrivals

Aston Villa have confirmed the arrivals of a number of Steve Gerrard’s new backroom staff at Villa Park.

What’s the latest?

In a short statement on their official website, the club confirmed the arrivals of Gary McAllister and Michael Beale as assistant head coaches, Tom Culshaw as technical coach, Scott Mason as lead analyst and Jordan Milsom as head of fitness and conditioning.

During a recent interview with Football Insider, Danny Mills stated his belief that, in anticipation of both McAllister and Beale making the move to Villa Park, the duo will be vital to Gerrard becoming a success with the Premier League club.

Speaking about the appointments, the former England right-back said: “I think it’s vitally important, and Villa fans should be delighted his whole backroom team is coming. Michael Beale is a fantastic coach with a great reputation. Gary McAllister, part of that as well, he’s been there, seen it and done it at big clubs in the Premier League. There’s great experience coming with Steven Gerrard.”

Fans will be over the moon

Considering the impressive reputations that both McAllister and Beale bring with them to Villa Park, the news that the club have officially appointed the duo as Gerrard’s assistants is sure to have left fans over the moon with excitement.

Indeed, Beale is credited with being the former Liverpool captain’s main man on the training ground, putting the 41-year-old’s ideas into practice, as well as offering Gerrard tactical advice on a matchday by spending the first half of matches up in the stands – in order to gain a clearer picture of the way a game is panning out – before relaying his findings to the manager at half-time.

Furthermore, Beale has received high praise from many players he has coached in his career, perhaps none more so than from former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday, who stated his belief that the 41-year-old was “probably the best coach I’ve worked under.”

Meanwhile, McAllister’s appointment brings with it a considerable amount of experience in professional management, with the 56-year-old having taken charge of both Coventry City and Leeds United. Gerrard will undoubtedly seek to draw upon that experience during his time at Villa.

As such, the news that McAllister and Beale have indeed followed the 41-year-old from Ibrox is undoubtedly a big positive for Villa, whose new era under Gerrard & co begins with a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion next weekend.

ICC critical following player defections

An ICC spokesman has criticised players from Afghanistan and Uganda who absconded at the end of the recent ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers

Martin Williamson25-Sep-2009An ICC spokesman has criticised players from Afghanistan and Uganda who absconded at the end of the recent ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers in Toronto, and who are believed to be looking to claim asylum in Canada.Reacting to concerns that the players’ action will have a detrimental effect on future tournaments, a spokesman told Cricinfo: “The ICC does not condone the act of players absconding during or after playing in an overseas tournament. Such an action does not benefit anyone: it affects the member from whom the players come as it means it is weaker for subsequent events.”It affects the country where they come from as it damages its reputation and, potentially at least, makes it harder for nationals and players without intentions to remain in a country illegally to obtain travel documents in the future; and it damages the reputation of cricket. Even those that abscond are potentially worse off as they become illegal within that country.”There has been growing concern that the recent defections will make it harder for players from some countries to obtain visas for future events. “The ICC does not play a role in obtaining visas for member boards,” the spokesman said. “That is the responsibility of each of those members. It is also the responsibility of those members to have knowledge of each of their players and their likely behaviour.”Asked if the ICC might take a more hands-on role in such matters, the spokesman said it was not for the ICC to interfere in the way that teams are selected. “The ICC does not seek to vet, to approve or disapprove of any selections of players for any teams and that has to be correct; each member is free to select whoever it sees fit.”

Aston Villa interested in Paulo Fonseca

Aston Villa are considering a move to appoint Paulo Fonseca as Dean Smith’s successor at Villa Park.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Record, who claim that Aston Villa chief executive Christian Purslow is finalising his shortlist of candidates for the vacant Villa managerial position on Tuesday, with one of the targets identified being the former AS Roma manager.

The report continues to state that Fonseca’s representatives have already contacted Villa in order to formally throw the 48-year-old’s hat into the ring, suggesting that the Portuguese coach would be more than willing to take over from Smith.

He could be worth the risk

While Aston Villa’s precarious 16th place league position would lend favour to the club appointing a coach who boasts the previous experience of Premier League management – as, should a foreign coach fail to adapt their style of play to the English game quickly enough, the results could well be disastrous for Villa – Fonseca may well be a candidate who is worth the risk for NSWE.

Indeed, having led FC Pacos de Ferreira to a highly impressive third-place finish in Liga NOS back in 2012/13, the 48-year-old repeated a similar feat with SC Braga a few years later – sealing a fourth-place finish in the league and winning the Portuguese Cup with Os Arcebispos.

This led to Shakhtar Donetsk appointing Fonseca in the summer of 2016, with the Ukrainian side going on to win three consecutive league titles under the Portuguese manager, in addition to three Ukrainian Cups, one Ukrainian Super Cup and reaching the last 16 of the Champions League in 2017/18.

Once again, this led to another step up for the 48-year-old, being handed a two-year deal by Serie A side Roma in 2019, with former club president Jim Pallotta stating upon his arrival: “Paulo is a young and ambitious coach with international experience, a winning mentality and a reputation for bold, attacking football that will excite our fans.”

However, despite leading I Giallorossi to an impressive fifth-place finish and reaching the Europa League round of 16 during his debut season in Rome, Fonseca left the club just one season later, following a slightly underwhelming seventh-place finish in Serie A and being trounced 8-4 on aggregate by Manchester United in the Europa League semi-final.

Despite this final season at Roma, however, it is clear to see that the man who Massimo Ambrosini dubbed a “modern” manager is a coach who has a history of achieving success with a number of unfavoured sides, as well as one who can get his team playing bold, exciting and attacking football – all of which suggest that the 48-year-old could well be worthy of a shot at Villa Park.
