Rubel Hossain down with chicken pox

Rubel Hossain has contracted chicken pox, becoming the latest Bangladesh seamer to suffer a physical setback. He will miss the limited-overs leg of the Zimbabwe tour, after picking up the illness on Friday.Rubel had earlier been rested for the second Test due to a shoulder niggle, and had gone down with fever on the first night of the second Test.”We cannot send him back now because the disease is contagious and he has to travel by plane, plus he is weak now,” said team manager Tanjib Ahsan Saad. “But after he recovers, which is expected to be six to seven days, he will most likely travel back home.”With Rubel out, the remaining seamers are Robiul Islam, Ziaur Rahman, Sajidul Islam and Shafiul Islam. The team management may retain Robiul for the ODIs, following his good form in the ongoing Tests.Meanwhile, Shahriar Nafees and Enamul Haque Jr left Harare for Dhaka on Saturday evening to make way for Abdur Razzak and Shamsur Rahman, who will join the limited-overs squad.

SA hope Rabada puts ban behind him as WTC final beckons

CSA was concerned about the wellbeing of its premier fast bowler after he was banned for drug use

Firdose Moonda13-May-2025Kagiso Rabada’s well-being was top of mind for Cricket South Africa (CSA) when the organisation learnt of his positive drug test and subsequent month-long ban. Now, coach Shukri Conrad, Test and ODI captain Temba Bavuma and director of the national team and high performance Enoch Nkwe are all satisfied that Rabada is not a regular recreational drug user, has educated himself, and is ready to get back to his best at the World Test Championship (WTC) final next month.”I’ve been engaging with KG ever since I learnt about it,” Conrad said at a press conference in Johannesburg, where South Africa’s squad for the WTC final was announced. “The biggest thing for me was whether KG is all right and to close ranks around him and ensure that he’s in a good space. At the end of the day, we care for all our players. He served his sentence, and all that I’m interested in now is KG producing performances that we know he’s capable of.”Rabada tested positive on January 21 after a match between MI Cape Town and Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20 for what the South African Institute of Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS, which is a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Agency) calls a “substance of abuse”. SAIDS will reveal the exact substance on June 4, 30 days after Rabada’s appeal period lapses, but according to their doping code, it can only be one of four: cannabis, cocaine, heroin or ecstasy.Bavuma on Rabada: “If there is an issue there, then he gets the support that he needs. If there’s not an issue, if it was him being reckless, then he deals with it”•Gallo Images

Several sources around Rabada said they hoped it was a one-off while recognising that the chances of someone using a substance just once and being caught are minimal, which has raised questions over Rabada’s general well-being. Nkwe confirmed that the incident happened “out of competition” (which is not on a match day) but had no further details, while Bavuma, also a long-time friend of Rabada’s, said his “biggest concern is more from a personal point of view”. “If there is an issue there, then he gets the support that he needs. If there’s not an issue, if it was him being reckless, then he deals with it,” Bavuma said. “The sledging, the media from the UK, from Australia, he deals with that. Just make sure that he comes out better from the situation.”Related

The timing of Rabada’s indiscretion, with a WTC final against Australia in England as his next assignment, means that there would be more spotlight on his sanction than usual. Already, former Australian captain Tim Paine has criticised the communication around Rabada leaving the IPL for what was at the time said to be “personal reasons” even though, by then, Rabada knew he was banned.Nkwe explained that CSA was unable to communicate any more detail because they needed to “respect SAIDS in driving the process and ensuring that everything was completed correctly”. “SAIDS embarked on that process and unless an individual feels that they want to come out straight away, it is a private matter,” he said. “We needed to respect that when it was time for information to be shared, it was shared by SAIDS.”Conrad was blunt in his response to Rabada’s naysayers. “To Tim Paine and everybody else out there, I’d probably say something simple like, ‘Let he without sin cast the first stone’. I’d leave it at that.”Paine resigned as Australia’s captain in 2021, after it was revealed that he was involved in an explicit text-message scandal before he took over as captain. He had ascended to that post in the wake of Sandpapergate, when Cameron Bancroft was caught using sandpaper on the ball during the Newlands Test – in a series where tensions had been simmering all the way through.Rabada earned demerit points for a shoulder brush against Smith in the second Test and was initially banned from the following two games before a successful appeal; his history with Australia is fraught. Nkwe expected that to continue: “We know the Australians are probably going to use it against him. But he’s gone through that journey, in 2018 with Sandpapergate and we saw the outcome of that.”For now, Nkwe said, Rabada had paid his penance, which included two educational sessions.”As much as he’s a superstar, he can also make a mistake,” Nkwe said. “But for us now, it’s the educational side of things and putting that into practice. It’s one of the things that he wants to drive – educating the youth and turning this thing around and making it into a positive message. For a 19-year-old or a 16-year-old, to hear it from someone that has done great things for South Africa, I think it becomes even more impactful.”

Taylor recalled to New Zealand squad

Ross Taylor will make his return to New Zealand colours in the Twenty20 series against England, having been named in the squads for both the T20s and the one-day internationals that follow.Taylor, who took a self-imposed break from the international scene following his controversial removal as captain after the Sri Lanka tour, recently returned to action in the Plunket Shield and has also been included in the New Zealand XI squad to face England in two warm-up matches next week. The other notable inclusion comes in the Twenty20 squad where Hamish Rutherford, the son of former New Zealand captain Ken, has been handed his first international call-up. Rutherford, 23, has been in consistent form for Otago this season. There is a recall to both squads for allrounder Andrew Ellis after he missed the South Africa tour through injury. Ian Butler, the pace bowler, has also been recalled to the New Zealand set-up for the first time since December 2010, when he played the last of his 15 T20 internationals.Mike Hesson, the New Zealand coach, said: “Andrew proved his worth with the team last summer, while Ross is a world-class batsman who is a key part of this Blackcaps side. Hamish has shown he is an explosive batsman and we hope he can bring that form to the Blackcaps.”Tim Southee remains sidelined with his thumb injury while Corey Anderson, who was on the South Africa tour, has not recovered from the broken thumb he picked up earlier this month. Martin Guptill, who had a poor one-day series against South Africa, retains his place in the 50-overs side.Kim Littlejohn, the general manager, national selection, said: “There are a couple of changes that have been forced through injury but essentially we want to be seen to provide continuity from one series to the next.”We are however looking at developing talented youngsters and finding a new crop of allrounders in our build-up to the Champions Trophy in June and the 2015 World Cup.”The three-match Twenty20 series against England begins in Auckland on February 9.Twenty20 squad Brendon McCullum (capt), Trent Boult, Ian Butler, Grant Elliott, Andrew Ellis, James Franklin, Martin Guptill, Roneel Hira, Mitchell McClenaghan, Nathan McCullum, Colin Munro, Hamish Rutherford, Ross TaylorOne-day squad Brendon McCullum (capt), Trent Boult, Grant Elliott, Andrew Ellis, James Franklin, Martin Guptill, Mitchell McClenaghan, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Colin Munro, Ross Taylor, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson

Rashid Khan escapes into the moment to sneak Sussex into Finals Day

Inventive, outrageous cameo ends Yorkshire hopes after Gary Ballance puts Sussex under pressure

David Hopps24-Aug-2021There has not been too much in life to cheer Rashid Khan in recent weeks. He was moved to paint the Afghanistan flag on his face in the latter stages of the Hundred to express his fears for the future of his country. But somehow, in the first quarter-final of the Vitality Blast, he escaped into the moment – and how – producing the cameo to squeeze Sussex home against Yorkshire with two balls to spare.Inventive, outrageous, and a reminder that Rashid is one of T20’s great crowd-pleasers: it was quite a finale. His unbeaten 27 from nine balls included two sixes, one almost miraculously pushed back into the field of play by Jordan Thompson, another thrashed straight back past him, helicopter fashion. With 22 needed from two overs, Rashid then tipped the balance with three successive boundaries against David Willey, the maddest of them a full toss flicked on the stoop over square leg. Chris Jordan hauled Matt Fisher over square leg to finish it.

Rashid, not available for Sussex for Finals Day, said: “Thanks to the coaching staff for sending me in early to finish the game. I think they bowled where I wanted. Even I don’t know [where it’s going] when I hit the ball. I just try to hit it strong.”This Yorkshire side has been their most adept for years at T20 cricket. Forced to play their home quarter on a neutral ground at Chester-le-Street because of preparations for the Headingley Test, they brought the boundaries in to an extent that some found absurd, but they could not bring in the victory with it. Dreaming of a treble a few weeks ago, they are now left with an outside chance of the Championship and would probably have to win all four games. Both captains, Yorkshire’s David Willey and Sussex’s Luke Wright, agreed that Yorkshire had the best of the batting conditions, with the ball getting lower as the evening progressed. If Sussex’s fielding was mediocre, Yorkshire’s was utterly abysmal – Gary Ballance and Adam Lyth among the few exceptions. “Winning the toss and batting first we got the best of the conditions,” Willey said. “I don’t think it was anything to do with not being at home that we didn’t get across the line tonight.”Yorkshire’s 177 for 7 put Sussex under pressure, even allowing for a miniature outfield. Sussex’s strength is in their bowling and, as if to exaggerate that, their selection appears to leave them a batter light – there were few other options than to promote Rashid up to No. 6. A strong start felt essential but even though Wright and Phil Salt provided it with 72 from 8.3 overs they always felt up against it.Yorkshire were ragged in the field and both openers benefited. Matthew Waite, who had a particularly clumsy night, missed Salt’s top edge at fine leg, as he raced back, by a distance when the batter was 5. Wright’s escape came on 31, a colossal skier which Yorkshire happily left to the man with the gloves, Harry Duke, who barely laid them on it.Related

Salt, more subdued than normal, fell at long-on to Thompson, who also defeated Ravi Bopara’s attempted steer. Wright, who had spent the Hundred bench-warming for Trent Rockets, was eager for the fray until Adil Rashid bowled him on the sweep. Delray Rawlins, as high as No. 4, rode his luck until Matt Fisher bowled him, leaving Rashid Khan to walk in with 43 needed from 21 balls and a plan to wreak havoc.Yorkshire’s innings owed much to Ballance. They have historically been wary of wristspin – Johnny Wardle, the maverick England left-arm spinner, was admonished for experimenting with “funny stuff” around 70 years ago – and suddenly they had three of them coming from all directions – Rashid, seeped in quality; Will Beer, long-serving and largely unsung; and little Archie Lenham, full of vim at barely 17, every cricket ground his stage this inaugural summer and barely a missed cue in sight. In Yorkshire, there is surely a by-law against such things but this was over the border in Durham.Lenham was the quickest and spun it the most among the Sussex trio. Wright gave him the second over. Lyth decided to impose himself against a raw kid, skipped down the pitch and miscued to mid-on where Jordan flung himself low to his right to take a catch to justify the captain’s gambit.

By the end of Yorkshire’s innings, Lenham had exemplary figures of 1 for 19 in three overs – further lustre in his debut season – his only blemish two successive leg-side sweep-ups in his third over for Ballance when he failed to find the googly he wanted.Ballance was Yorkshire’s redeeming feature with 55 from 37 balls. It’s been a while since the Ballance fan club demanded his England Test recall and that should be enough of an excuse. It is doubtful whether he has played as certainly all season. He was ignored for the Hundred, and there was little sense of building form in the 50-over competition. But he carried the fight with solid, determined blows against spin and seam alike. With five overs left, he scented destruction against George Garton but picked out deep midwicket.Ballance joined Tom Kohler-Cadmore in a stand of 85 in 62 balls after Yorkshire had lost three for 33. Willey laid back to heave Garton over midwicket for six, perhaps goaded by some back-chat from the wicketkeeper, Salt, but trying to pull Tymal Mills ended his foray. Harry Brook was Yorkshire’s in-form batter in the group stage, but Sussex matched him up with Rashid and his struggles were exemplified when he tumbled to the floor and, a little unfortunately, was adjudged lbw.Kohler-Cadmore’s 55 from 49 balls was out of character for such a freewheeling batter – at the midway stage he had 11 from 21 balls after a fair bit of playing and missing. He was also fortunate not to be given out caught at the wicket when 1. A straight drive against Garton, in the 16th over, was arguably his first convincing attacking shot.Successive sixes against Jordan, driven full toss followed by a crafty uppercut, gave him his slowest T20 fifty. He fell seven balls from the end, Salt tanking after a top-edge against Mills to hold a catch five metres in from the rope. It felt like an Outcome Knock – to be praised if Yorkshire won, censured if they lost. Instead, about an hour-and-a-half later, it was largely forgotten – the impudence of Rashid attracting all the attention.

White knock in vain for Northants

James Cameron’s terrific half-century helped Worcestershire to their second win in this year’s Friends Life t20 with a 14-run victory over Northamptonshire .

James Cameron’s terrific half-century helped Worcestershire to their second win in this year’s Friends Life t20 with a 14-run victory over Northamptonshire.Zimbabwean Cameron hammered 57 off 39 balls – his highest T20 score – as Worcestershire posted 142 for 5 from their 20 overs with Chaminda Vaas and Oliver Stone each taking two wickets. And despite a superb 62 not out off 42 balls by Australia international Cameron White, Northants fell short of their target as they closed on 128 for 5 to remain winless in the competition.Worcestershire won the toss and chose to bat but they lost Vikram Solanki for 8 in the second over when Stone’s delivery crashed into his leg stump. Mooen Ali was next to fall on 14 when Alex Wakely took a sharp catch at extra cover off the bowling of James Middlebrook.Cameron then completed an explosive half-century off 31 balls and Australia batsman Phil Hughes joined him on 50 off 47 deliveries as the third-wicket pair piled on 101 between them. But they departed in consecutive balls in the penultimate over when Cameron launched Vaas to Cameron White at long off before Hughes edged to Stone at short third man on 52.Worcestershire captain Daryl Mitchell then smashed Stone to Rob Keogh at deep square leg in the final over as the visitors gave the visitors a target of 143.The hosts lost Vaas for 9 in the fourth over when he was bowled by ex-Northants man David Lucas and their captain Alex Wakely departed cheaply by blasting Gareth Andrew to Alexei Kervezee at deep midwicket.Scotland international Kyle Coetzer went for 33 when was easily taken by Ali at long on off the bowling of Mitchell as the required run-rate crept up. Mitchell struck again when Rob White, on 4, chipped him to Netherlands international Kervezee at midwicket.James Middlebrook went for the same score when he was caught by Cameron at long on off Jack Shantry before Cameron White completed his half-century off 37 balls. But it was not enough as Northants fell to their fourth straight defeat. Their quarter-final hopes now look very slim.

Taylor was ready to bat with broken hand

Ross Taylor, the New Zealand captain, has said he would have come out to bat despite a broken arm to help save the third Test against South Africa in Wellington. Taylor had to retire hurt on the fourth day after he was hit by a short ball from Morne Morkel and had surgery on the fifth. He was not needed in the end, as New Zealand hung on for a draw at Basin Reserve six wickets down.”I was hoping not to [bat],” Taylor said a day after the Test. “I was back at the hotel with about 10 overs to go and then I got the phone call to ask whether I could bat. I thought you don’t often get to save a Test match, so I drove down. In the Wellington traffic it took me about five overs to get there, but the boys were looking pretty solid so I didn’t have to don the whites.”New Zealand, who needed to survive 81 overs, were in trouble when they lost half their side in 36 overs. However, Kane Williamson’s rearguard century and his partnerships with Kruger van Wyk and Doug Bracewell salvaged a draw for the hosts. South Africa won the three-Test series 1-0.”It was disappointing to get injured when I did. I would have liked to have helped the team get a draw but, at the end of the day, we got there in the end,” Taylor said. “I thought Kane Williamson, especially, batted outstandingly well. But I think Doug Bracewell has to take some credit there, too. Two 21-year-olds batting and were very mature for their age.”The injury means Taylor will not be available when his IPL team, Delhi Daredevils, start their campaign on April 5. However, his recovery is expected to take about four weeks, and Taylor did not rule out his participation in the later stages of the tournament.”We’ll just see what the medical staff say,” he said. “I’ve always listened to them and when they say I’m ready, I’m ready. I won’t be going against their word.”It has been reported that Delhi Daredevils, who bought Taylor from Rajasthan Royals in February, will not seek a replacement yet.

Haddin on ice for early ODIs

Brad Haddin is set to be stood down from the first bracket of the triangular ODI series against India and Sri Lanka

Brad Haddin, Australia’s senior wicketkeeper and acting vice-captain, is set to be stood down from the first bracket of the triangular ODI series against India and Sri Lanka, affording the Victoria gloveman Matthew Wade another chance to press his case.Wade will be behind the stumps in the two Twenty20 matches against India in Sydney and Melbourne this week, following Haddin’s international T20 retirement, but he is now expected to also take the role for the first three limited-overs matches by being named in the ODI squad to be announced on Monday.Haddin was due for a rest after playing across the home Test summer, though his questionable form was only just starting to trend back up in Adelaide following some difficult days against New Zealand and India. He is understood to be enthusiastic about playing for New South Wales in a pair of fixtures against Tasmania in Hobart, the first a domestic one-day match on Saturday, with a Sheffield Shield game to follow Monday to Thursday. Those matches would give Haddin the chance to build on the starts he made with the bat in the final India Test.Though there has been much speculation about his future this summer, Haddin remains a highly valued member of the Australian team, and a capable lieutenant for the captain Michael Clarke.Haddin and Clarke have formed a strong leadership duo in the absence of Shane Watson, with the wicketkeeper providing plenty of advice in the field as well as offering a strong voice in the dressing room. His contribution to the team is being measured as much by those attributes as by his performances on the field, which lurched into dire territory earlier in the season before improving. He may remain Clarke’s deputy for some matches to come given the doubts still swirling around Watson’s fitness.Pat Howard, the team performance manager, has said the selectors’ criteria for choosing players include leadership and other additions to the team. The successful Tasmania captain George Bailey’s selection as the national Twenty20 captain provided another example of their thinking.”You need sufficient skills to be within the frame, obviously. No one is picked if they don’t perform to be recognised for their core skills,” Howard said. “But then the selection panel [also] considers their contribution to the team, the effect those players are having on the team – are they coming from winning teams? All those things are important to assess what impact those players are having. And obviously John [Inverarity] being able to sit down with the players to hear about who the good leaders are in other teams and getting feedback can add so much to your selection decisions.”Ricky Ponting has spoken about the value people add outside their core skill. Be it their fielding, be it their character and the sort of leadership they produce, and how much they give to a side. To me, it is fantastic to see players supported [by each other]. You see David Warner score a hundred and the batsman at the other end [Ed Cowan] comes up and embraces him because he sees him as an important part of the team. Inverarity talks about adding to the pot more than you’re taking out, and he looks for those characters that add to that team environment.”
