Leeds should sign Jack Harrison regardless of promotion

Leeds United have relied heavily on loanees this season, but next summer represents a chance for the Whites to make some of those moves permanent.

The Yorkshire club are already tied into a deal that will see them pay £15m for Helder Costa at the end of this season, while they also have an option to buy Jack Harrison at the end of the campaign.

It’s unknown how much United’s option to buy the winger will cost them, but Phil Hay has suggested that Harrison could be available for around the £10m mark.

This is a deal that Leeds simply have to do, no matter whether they go up or not.

Of course, if they are promoted the financial aspects of the deal won’t be a problem, but even if they don’t it’s a signing they should look at making, even with their limited room for spending in regards to FFP.

Ok, FFP may not allow the Whites to outlay £10m on one player this summer as they’re already committed to spending £15m on Costa, but there is a small loophole that Leeds could benefit from.

The higher-ups at Leeds could do worse than following Wolves’ example from a few seasons ago when they triggered Benik Afobe’s option to buy, only to sell him a few days later for a profit.

If Harrison is indeed available for the price Hay mentions, Leeds would be foolish to not trigger his option to buy, even if they just sell him on.

Man City valued the 23-year-old at £10m coming off the back of a season where he contributed to just eight league goals, and that value is likely to have increased as he’s contributed to that many efforts in just his last 11 games, scoring four goals in total this term.

It’s not too far-fetched to say that the winger’s actual value could be well north of Leeds’ current reserve price if he continues the form he has been showing in recent weeks.

If Harrison keeps up his good form, Leeds simply must trigger this clause, regardless of whether it’s financially viable for them to keep him or not.

Dominic Solanke would be an excellent signing for Fulham to aid their survival hopes

[ad_pod ]

With the news that Liverpool are looking to loan out Dominic Solanke, according to The Sun, newly appointed Fulham boss Claudio Ranieri should be looking to tie up a deal for the England U21 striker to aid his side’s relegation battle.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Solanke has made just six starts since arriving at Anfield last summer, managing to score just a solitary goal in his time on Merseyside. Recently, however, in an environment that he has so often thrived in, the 21-year-old scored a match-winning double for England Under-21’s against Italy U21’s in impressive fashion.

With Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge and even Divock Origi ahead of him in the Reds’ pecking order, the former Chelsea forward looks to have no future at the club and should be desperate for a move away to save his stagnating career.

Where would he fit in at Fulham?

The Premier League’s basement side have only managed to score eleven goals in 12 appearances this season as a collective – only four sides have hit less. £22m man Aleksander Mitrovic has been responsible for five of those whilst others struggle to help him shoulder the burden.

Whilst on paper, Solanke doesn’t appear to be a player who will come straight in and sort things out, his presence alone could fire up the Serbian forward and help him find his best form yet again.

Andre Schurrle has pitched in with four goals, although he often starts in wide positions. If the Liverpool forward arrives at Craven Cottage, he will offers a physical presence up top alongside Mitrovic, as well as a clever forward’s brain where his runs and pace will help stretch defences.

Should they get him, they will be getting a player who is still yet to truly fulfil the potential that many saw in him as a youngster whilst with the Blues, under a boss in Ranieri who is extremely encouraging and positive.

Outcast Lazaar included in Newcastle United’s 25-man squad, fans react

Achraf Lazaar has become a forgotten figure at Newcastle United, but it seems that there could be a way back for the left-back.

The 26-year-old has been part of the club since 2016 when he signed from Palermo, but under manager Rafael Benitez he has struggled for game time.

In fact, last season in the Magpies’ first campaign back in the Premier League, Lazaar was sent to Benevento on loan, where he made made just nine appearances and scored one goal.

Throughout the summer transfer window, it seemed likely that Morocco international would move on, but a proposed switch to Genoa fell through.

The only thing left for Lazaar to do, until January at least, is work his way back into Benitez’s team.

It appears that there is a route for him to do so having been named in the squad for the first half of the campaign, unlike teammate Rolando Aarons.

On Twitter, some Newcastle fans have been posting their thoughts on Lazaar’s inclusion.

Three reasons Leeds should make a January move for Aleksandar Mitrovic

According to reports in The Chronicle, Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez could be ready to offload Aleksandar Mitrovic during the January transfer window.

The Serbia international arrived at St James’ Park from Anderlecht in 2015 with a decent goalscoring record in Belgium and for his country, but his poor temperament has certainly overshadowed his spell with the Magpies.

The 23-year-old has already missed three of his club’s Premier League matches this season after he was retrospectively handed a three-match ban for elbowing West Ham United’s Manuel Lanzini.

The centre-forward is Rafa Benitez’s third-choice in that position right now – behind Joselu and Dwight Gayle – and he has played a total of just 30 minutes in the top flight this term, with his future looking to be in serious doubt in the New Year.

Meanwhile, after a promising start to their Championship campaign Leeds have lost six of their last eight league games, and manager Thomas Christiansen could look to strengthen his attacking options when the transfer window opens.

Here are three reasons the Yorkshire outfit should make a January move for Mitrovic…

Competition up top

Both Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani and manager Thomas Christiansen knew that they needed to act at the end of the summer transfer window following the departure of Chris Wood to Burnley, but they might not have done enough to replace the goals the New Zealand international brought to the team with the signings they made.

With Caleb Ekuban missing the majority of the campaign through injury and Jay-Roy Grot and Pawel Cibicki struggling to make an impact, it has been left up to Hamburg loanee Pierre-Michel Lasogga to get the goals.

While he has netted a repspectable five times in nine Championship games, the 25-year-old has sometimes lacked the mobility and stamina to effectively play on his own in the 4-2-3-1 formation, and signing Mitrovic would certainly provide the German with some much-needed competition.

The fans would love him

While he may not be too popular with Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez because of the mistakes he has made and the naivety he has sometimes shown on the pitch, the St James’ Park faithful still love him.

The Serbia international is passionate, willing to battle and he has an almost cult-hero status among the supporters, and there is no doubt that he would effortlessly make that transition to the Leeds fans if he joined the Championship outfit.

The Yorkshire outfit’s supporters are known for their backing and loyalty, and their potential relationship could prove to be a match made in heaven and one that proves to be the catalyst of their promotion push in the second half of the season.

Point to prove

If Mitrovic does depart Newcastle in the New Year, he will certainly have a big point to prove at his next club.

Despite the problems with his discipline, the 23-year-old will probably feel that he hasn’t been given the opportunities he has perhaps deserved considering he has scored 10 goals in 36 Premier League games in total for the Tyneside outfit, with many of those coming when the Magpies were struggling at the bottom of the table.

With the 2018 World Cup just around the corner and with Serbia qualifying automatically, the centre-forward will want to be playing regularly and finding the net on a consistent basis and that would only prove to be a benefit for a potential suitor like Leeds.

Chelsea fans hail Conte for giving speech to successful youth team

Chelsea supporters seem to have fallen more in love with their manager Antonio Conte after he visited the club’s Under-18s to congratulate them on winning the FA Youth Cup.

The young guns sealed their fourth consecutive title after sealing a 6-2 aggregate win over Manchester City in midweek.

On the night, Conte watched from the executive boxes at Stamford Bridge as the players of the future claimed a 5-1 triumph, with Trevoh Chalobah, Ike Ugbo, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Dujon Sterling and Cole DaSilva getting on the scoresheet.

After the final whistle, celebrations ensued and Conte took part before heading to the dressing room and delivering a speech to the teenage team.

It was a nice touch from the Italian coach, who is edging closer to claiming his first-ever Premier League title as his senior team have a four-point lead with five games left to play.

Unfortunately for the youth players, they face a huge challenge trying to break into the first-team squad.

John Terry is the only big success story in terms of Chelsea’s youth development, but a visit from Conte will only spur on the Blues’ developing talent.

3 amazing Leicester City goals you’ve probably forgotten about

Leicester City’s fans were treated to some of the most entertaining football in the club’s history as they won the Premier League title last season.

Players like Mahrez and Vardy were producing moments of magic every week for the Foxes, with the Algerian’s strike against Chelsea and Vardy’s wonderful volley against Liverpool still in most fans’ memories.

Leicester fans may be able to cast their minds back to a few belters before this year; some will even recount strikes from the King Power was called The Walkers Stadium, or even from the Foxes time at Filbert Street.

Even prior to their title win, Leicester could boast a few legends at the club such as Gary Lineker, Steve Walsh, Alan Birchenall and Emile Heskey. However, there are some obscure names who managed some absolute scorchers.

Here at the Transfer Tavern we’ve dug through the archives to pick out some amazing Leicester goals you probably don’t remember.

MUZZY IZZET vs Tottenham, 1998

The first goal on our list comes from Turkish midfielder, Muzzy Izzet.

Izzet managed a few pearls in his eight years at the club, but arguably none were better than this strike against Spurs.

After Les Ferdinand, who would later play for the Foxes, scored the opener for Spurs, Emile Heskey hit an equaliser in the first half.

This set the stage for Izzet to win the game with a stunning volley and secure three points for Martin O’Neill’s side.

LILIAN NALIS vs Leeds, 2003

Leicester’s 4-0 demolition of Leeds United was one of the few bright spots of the 03/04 season.

The Foxes secured their first win of the season thanks to a brace from Paul Dickov and goals from Lilian Nalis and Jamie Scowcroft.

It was the first goal from the Frenchman that provided the highlight as Nalis hit a looping 25-yard volley to score his first for the club.

Unfortunately the season ended in relegation for both sides, but at least Leicester can look back fondly on this day.

JEFFREY BRUMA vs Watford, 2011

Considering he was recently playing the Champions League for PSV, you could be forgiven for forgetting Jeffrey Bruma even played for Leicester.

Now at Wolfsburg, the Dutchman had a stint on loan to the Foxes while they were still in the Championship.

In their 4-2 win against Watford, Bruma managed two superb strikes, with the better of the two shown above.

That game was Bruma’s only real contribution for Leicester that season, but fortunately both parties they both moved on to better things.
