Why are Premier League clubs giving United ace a wide berth?

In case you hadn’t heard, there is a former Premier League golden boot winner who happens to be one of the most gifted technicians in the entire land up for sale. He’s getting on a bit, but he can still offer pure quality to any team who could accommodate him. Unfortunately though, nobody seems that keen. What’s so wrong about Dimitar Berbatov?

As we look to burst into the final days of August, we’re now reaching the real business end of the transfer window this summer. There will always be chancers willing to leave their business till deadline day, but most teams will be looking to get their team ready and settled before the first game of the season. It would appear as of yet though, that no one particularly fancies bedding in the mercurial Berbatov into their side.

It’s been well documented that the Bulgarian is free to depart Old Trafford this summer. The presence of both Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck has seemingly relegated Berbatov into the role of fourth choice striker. As he said himself: “I love this club, but I am not going to be useful to anyone if I am not playing.” It’s a refreshingly honest statement and one that can’t really be argued with.

Because in truth, Berbatov is simply far too good to be playing fourth fiddle up in Manchester. He seems to have taken some unfair ridicule since his £30million move from Tottenham Hotspur in 2008. His relaxed demeanour hasn’t suited all at Old Trafford, but his scoring record isn’t anywhere near as bad as some seem to portray it. The ex-Bayer Leverkusen man has scored 48 in 108 league appearances for the Red Devils. A strike rate of near-on one in two is hardly child’s play. His exploits in the 2010-11 season saw him share the Barclays Premier League golden boot with Carlos Tevez in a 20-goal haul.

But to focus solely on his goal scoring exploits, which have been consistently good since his early days at CSKA Sofia, is doing Berbatov a massive disservice. Potential suitors wouldn’t just be getting someone who can score goals.

Berbatov’s link up play is just as prolific as his ability in front of the goal. Fire the ball in high or hit the ball in low; in fact, it doesn’t really matter how the midfield or defence decide to knock it up to Berbatov, such is his ability, nine times out of ten he will always keep possession. He can set up goals as well as bury them and his versatility is testament to his outlandish ability.

You could play him front as a lone striker or alongside a partner, as he did with Robbie Keane at Tottenham Hotspur. He could even be deployed as a target man with a difference and he will always bring others into play. Some have pointed to his perceived lack of pace as a potential issue, and although the cliché so often rings hollow, Berbatov’s game doesn’t rely on pace.

He is all about touch, technique and finesse and when you’re as gifted as he is, you don’t need to worry about not having the legs. Hence why his game as a striker means his career at the top flight could be set to last a few more years longer, than say a Darren Bent like figure.

Although at the risk of upetting several animal rights groups and Berbatov fan clubs, are we flogging something of a dead horse though, as we list the Bulgarian’s selling points? The thing is, no one is exactly unaware of Berbatov’s attributes. He has been one of the more high profile footballers of the Barclays Premier League since his arrival in England in 2006. You can’t really not be high profile after a £30million record transfer. Premier League managers no what he’s all about, so where’s all the interest?

If you were to pick one negative in Berbatov’s game, you could make a good case for a suspect work ethic. Berbatov has something of a stigma, which in many cases is warranted, of not really pulling his weight and putting a shift in for the team. Needless to say, he doesn’t like dirty work. And to a vast majority of Premier League teams, this could be a real sticking point. Pragmatism is favoured over flair by many in this league. The stakes are high and there’s a certain breed of British manager who prefer the workhorse to the artist. Even when the artist is as skilful as the Berbatov’s of this world.

But even then, surely Berbatov is simply too talented to ignore. Even though he will in all likeliness have to take a wage cut to stay in the Premier League, he is still going to demand a fair whack. But if, as the man himself has claimed, he is available for a paltry £5million, then surely he’s worth a punt. It just seems too good not to.

Dimitar Berbatov isn’t necessarily everybody’s cup of tea. But it seems startling that no one has made any solid attempts to sign him yet. There may have been some tentative enquiries but as of yet, it seems only Galatasaray have made any real move for the 31-year-old. But he’s still got so much more to offer in the Premier League.

They say fortune favours the brave. Even then, it seems bizzare that we should be denoting any club looking to sign a player that once cost £30million as courageous. But this is the era that we live in. Dimitar Berbatov must be worth a gamble by another Premier League team.

Can you think of a decent reason why Berbatov’s not been snapped up? Or do you think I’m simply on the books of the Berbatov fan club? Tell me what you think, follow @samuel_antrobus on Twitter and bat me your views.

Arsenal fans react as Karim Benzema scores CL brace for Real Madrid

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, who is rated at £45m by Transfermarkt, scored both of his side’s goals in their 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night that ensured that they reached the final of the Champions League, and Arsenal fans were quick to have their say on the Frenchman’s performance.

The Gunners have been almost continually linked with a move for the 30-year-old over the years, but a deal to bring him to the Emirates Stadium has never materialised.

The centre-forward’s brace against Bayern was a rare highlight for the France international in what has been a disappointing campaign in terms of goalscoring for the La Liga giants – he has only found the net 11 times in 42 appearances in all competitions.

Arsenal supporters, who are desperate on Twitter for Santi Cazorla to return before the end of the season, took to social media to give their thoughts on Benzema’s latest display, and while one said “Arsenal, please sign Benzema”, another said “Benzema playing like he wants to go to Arsenal in the summer”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Man United stalwart: Sterling right to want Liverpool exit

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has threatened a backlash from the Liverpool supporters by claiming that it is only natural that Raheem Sterling wants an Anfield exit.

The England international attacker has spurned a new contract at the Merseyside club and is widely expected to push for a move away from the Reds this summer.

Sterling’s agent has been vocal in the player’s desire to leave Liverpool, while the 20-year-old has admitted that he wants to chase silverware.

With Brendan Rodgers’ men not qualifying for next season’s Champions League, Sterling’s future remains a point of major contention.

Neville has weighed in and stated that Liverpool have lost all their best players over the last generation and Sterling’s desire to leave is nothing surprising.

“Raheem Sterling has been in the eye of a storm this week following the revelation that he wants to leave Liverpool, but while there is a lot to be said about the way the story has developed, the harsh reality for the club is that this situation has been 15 years in the making,” Neville wrote in a column for The Telegraph.

“But has Raheem Sterling really let Liverpool down by suggesting he wants to leave or is he just a kid who wants to play football and win trophies?

“The prospect of losing Sterling will be a major concern for everybody connected to the club, but the uncomfortable truth is that this is nothing new for Liverpool.

“Just look back over the past 10-15 years and count the number of players who have left Anfield to pursue bigger and better things elsewhere.

“Steve McManaman, Michael Owen, Javier Mascherano, Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez have all gone.”

Sterling is reportedly attracting interest from overseas, while the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal are also keeping a close eye on the situation. Liverpool have expressed their desire to keep the player, who is contracted until 2017, at Anfield.

Aston Villa fans blast Taylor on social media

Aston Villa will play their final league match of the 2017-18 Championship campaign against Millwall this weekend, before turning their attention to the playoffs.

One player that will not be involved against Millwall though is full-back Neil Taylor, who is struggling to overcome a hamstring problem.

News of Taylor’s absence landed on Villa’s Twitter account on Thursday, and it would be fair to say that the response to the injury update was not kind.

Taylor has made 29 appearances in all competitions for Villa during the 2017-18 campaign, and actually has a contract at Villa Park until the summer of 2021 having only made the move from Swansea City in January 2017.

The 29-year-old, who is valued at £4.5m by transfermarkt.co.uk, has struggled to impress for long spells, however, and the Villa supporters have simply not taken to the Welshman since his arrival.

Taylor will not be involved this weekend, and the club’s fanbase want head coach Steve Bruce to sanction his exit in this summer’s transfer window.

A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

What next for Mike Ashley and Newcastle?

Newcastle fans naively thought getting rid of Alan Pardew would solve their problems.

But in reality, Newcastle United got rid of one of the best managers they’ve had over the past decade. And now Pardew is working wonders at Crystal Palace, and has lead them to Premier League safety.

Newcastle United, on the other hand, are truly struggling in the Premier League – their last win was almost two months ago. They are sitting in 14th, with the league being far from over. But, what now?

It’s clear to see that John Carver is not having the desired effect as the Magpies’ manager. He does not have Premier League winning side, and he has had little time to make his impact.

[ffc-gal cat=”newcastle-united” no=”5″]

Yet we all know, as a manager in the Premier League, you do not have the time to prove yourself: you must be able to change things around almost instantaneously. If their season continues like this, it’ll be no surprise if Carver is out of a job in the summer.

One thing that has hindered Newcastle’s later stages of the season is the ban Papiss Cisse picked up. In Manchester United’s clash with Newcastle, both Jonny Evans and Cisse were disciplined for spitting at each other.

Evans found himself banned for six games, whereas Cisse picked up a ban for seven matches. Cisse is Newcastle’s top scorer for the season, so of course they will be missing the impact he has on their games. Their next highest scorer, Ayoze Perez, has six goals to his name, compared to Cisse’s 11.

Newcastle need to do something and act fast. These continuous losses are cause for concern. There may be a three point gap between Newcastle and Aston Villa, but with Villa’s turn around, that cushion could be gone by next week.

Fan unrest speaks volumes, especially when they are plotting boycotts at home games. It could well be time for Mike Ashley to sell up and move on, as it’s clear things just aren’t working anymore.

The focus for Newcastle has to be to stay up and utilise their summer in order to strengthen their squad, and ensure they have a long term manager in place.

Zidane hails Gareth Bale as the player who impresses him the most

Tottenham midfielder Gareth Bale has been labelled the player of the year in the opinion of former Juventus midfielder Zinedine Zidane.

The 23-year-old has been in scintillating form this campaign, helping his team to third in the Premier League and into the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

The Wales international’s performances have been monitored by clubs all around Europe with Barcelona and Real Madrid both reported to be preparing bids for the former Southampton man in the summer.

Zidane, who could join the coaching staff at the Santiago Bernabeu next term, went to watch Spurs take on Lyon in the Europa League and insists that he was encouraged by what he saw.

“This year the player who’s impressed me most is not actually playing in the Champions League. He’s playing in the other cup [Europa League], and that’s Bale,” Zidane said.

“He’s unique. He makes things look easy, his pace is frightening, his acceleration is unbelievable because of his ability to go through the gears in very little space. Plus, he’s very good technically which is also important. We mustn’t forget that he plays football very well.”

Tottenham fans congratulate Son after he is named Asia’s best player

Mauricio Pochettino has spent the last two summer transfer windows looking for the ideal backup to Harry Kane but the solution might well lie within his own club, in the shape of Heung-min Son.

The South Korean international, valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt, has enjoyed an outstanding season and some of his best work has been done when filling in for Kane in the centre-forward position.

His Spurs performances have earned him the award of Best Footballer in Asia for the third time in a row as he gears up to help his country spring a few surprises in this summer’s World Cup.

Some cynics might say that it is biggest piece of silverware Spurs will have to celebrate this season but the club’s fans were keen to show their appreciation for a player who has come on leaps and bounds this term.

We’ve taken a closer look at the best of the reaction…

Sherwood refuses to rule out extra help for ‘scared’ Villa players

Tim Sherwood says he is considering hiring a sports psychologist to help Aston Villa’s ‘scared’ players in their battle against relegation, reports the Daily Mail.

Sherwood watched his side go down to a 2-1 home defeat to Stoke City in his first game in charge, with Victor Moses breaking Villa hearts with a last minute penalty.

Prior to his appointment, Villa had dropped into the bottom three under Paul Lambert – with last Saturday’s defeat to Stoke their sixth consecutive Premier League loss.

Sherwood appeared full of confidence upon his arrival at Villa Park, but reality appears to have set in after just one match in charge.

The former Tottenham boss is not ruling out the prospect of bringing in outside help for his players, as they prepare for a crucial clash with Newcastle this afternoon.

John Carver’s side suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Manchester City last time out, and Sherwood is hoping that fact added to a full week on the training ground will stand his side in decent stead to get a positive result.

‘If we’re going to fail, we fail trying and really expressing ourselves,’ he said.

‘If there’s someone out there that I think can help the group, whether that be a coach or sports psychologist, whoever it is, we wouldn’t turn it down. You look at it and say they should be used to it (struggling) but I don’t think you can ever get used to this.

‘We haven’t got a fantastic amount of time so when we’re on the training field, I have to give the boys some key messages. If I flood them with information then it will go to waste.

‘They’re picking it up on the training field. It’s completely different when you transfer your training form to match day. It takes a lot of character and a lot of bravery and confidence to be able to do that.

‘It’s a psychology job. I really mean it when I say “don’t be scared”. Don’t be scared to lose. Just get out there and give everything. You leave nothing on the pitch.

‘The quality is in the group but there is something in there which we need to dispel. I don’t think there’s any shame getting it out in the open because they’re going to have to dig deep.’

Brunt glad West Brom won’t be in Europa League

West Brom captain Chris Brunt believes that the club can no longer qualify for the Europa League, and he is happy about it.

The Baggies are currently eighth in the Premier League after a solid season, but are six points adrift of Arsenal, who occupy fifth spot.

Brunt believes that it is unlikely that the Midlanders will be able to bridge the gap, and that missing out on continental football will prove to be a blessing in disguise:

“People have been talking about Europe but it’s probably a step too far now. For a club of our size it would probably be a bit of a stretch on resources.” He is quoted by The Mirror.

“If it happened it would be great, but it would be tough – we’ve seen how it affected Newcastle this season.

“It’s difficult because there are a lot of games to be played and we don’t have the biggest squad.”

However, the Northern Irish international feels that West Brom have the potential to make it into the Europa League in the future:

“It would be a difficult task, but there’s no reason why we couldn’t get there in future if we keep doing what we’re doing.”

Brunt has not had the best of seasons on a personal note, notching just two gaols in 26 appearances.

At one stage he was taunted by some sections of the Baggies’ support, who were frustrated by his level of displays.

But, his form has improved of late and has maintained his status as one of the club’s star names.
