Jamaica maintain unbeaten streak; qualify for semis

A round-up of sixth-round matches of the Regional Four Day Competition

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Apr-2013
ScorecardJamaica cemented their spot at the top of the table and entered the semi-finals of the Regional Four Day Competition with a 214-run win over Guyana. The win – their fifth consecutive in the tournament – gives Jamaica 60 points and they have a chance to widen that gap when they take on Combined Campuses and Colleges in the last league match on April 25.Wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh and fast bowler Sheldon Cotterrell were the pillars of Jamaica’s win over Guyana. Batting first, Jamaica had slumped to 12 for 4 after fast bowler Keon Joseph ran through the top order. They were a precarious 88 for 6 before Baugh and Nikita Miller added 89 runs for the seventh wicket, taking Jamaica towards the 200-run mark. The side was eventually all out for 208. Joseph picked up four wickets for 53 runs while Devendra Bishoo took 3 for 51.In reply, Guyana crumbled to 96 all out. They were 10 for 5 at one stage and the pace-bowling pair of Cotterrell and Andrew Richardson dismissed as many as five batsmen for ducks. Fast bowler David Bernard then dismissed the lower order, the only resistance coming from captain Veerasammy Permaul who played a lone hand of 49.Baugh narrowly missed out on his 13th first-class hundred, caught short of the crease on 99, as Jamaica went about extending their 112-run lead in the second innings. He shared a 138-run, sixth-wicket partnership with Blackwood before Jamaica declared their innings at 257 for 8, setting Guyana a target of 370.The Jamaican bowlers dismissed Guyana for 155 to set up their side’s fifth win of the tournament. Except for a 70 from Leon Johnson, Guyana put up another dismal batting display and finish the competition fifth on the points table, after losing four of their six matches.
ScorecardA nine-wicket win over Leeward Islands helped Windward Islands qualify for the semi-final. Put in to bat first, Leewards were a relatively safe 102 for 2 before they lost eight wickets for 27 runs. Shane Shillingford picked up six of those wickets to finish with figures of 7 for 45 off 17.5 overs. Kieran Powell was the only Leewards batsman to fire, scoring 51.In reply, Windwards recovered from a score of 58 for 5 to post 268. Captain Liam Sebastien led the recovery with an innings of 93 and received support from Lindon James (21) and Shillingford (42). Yannick Leonard was the most successful bowler for Leewards, picking up four wickets for 63 runs. With a lead of 139 to wipe out, the Leewards’ batsmen failed for the second time. Powell’s second fifty of the match was the only substantial innings, after the batsmen squandered their starts and the side were out for 158, narrowly avoiding an innings defeat. Sebastien followed up his half-century with a five-wicket haul, while Shillingford picked up three wickets to take his match haul to ten. Windwards strolled past their target of 20 for the loss of just one wicket.
ScorecardSplendid bowling efforts from Miguel Cummins and Sulieman Benn took Barbados to victory over Trinidad & Tobago in just two days at Port of Spain. Both teams have qualified for the semi-final. Barbados with 48 points are placed third in the league, while Trinidad and Tobago are fourth.T&T batted first, losing wickets at regular intervals. Cummins starred with the ball, taking 7 for 45, as T&T were scuttled out for 109 in 37 overs. The only real form of resistance came from batsman Imran Khan with his unbeaten 30.Barbados in reply posted 194 before being dismissed. Contributions from Kirk Edwards (29), Shane Dowrich (24), Benn (22) and an unbeaten 56 from Javon Searles ensured they had a slim 85-run lead going into the next innings.T&T in their second innings simply couldn’t muster enough runs as Benn, Searles and Cummins combined to blast them out for just 129. Imran Khan once again top-scored with 33, while contributions from Lendl Simmons (26) and Rayad Emrit (26) were not enough to create a significant advantage. Benn ran through the order with 5 for 49, with Searles complementing him with 3 for 26.This left just 45 runs for Barbados to chase for victory. The openers would see off the chase as Barbados won by 10 wickets. With this result they are tied on 48 points with Jamaica and Windward Islands, but Jamaica has played two less matches, while Windward has played one less. This means the points scenario could change in the next fixtures.

Warne's advice helped – Doherty

Xavier Doherty has said Shane Warne’s words of advice helped both him and Glenn Maxwell keep their confidence up as they struggled for impact

Brydon Coverdale 04-Mar-2013Xavier Doherty has said Shane Warne’s words of advice helped both him and Glenn Maxwell keep their confidence up as they struggled for impact on the difficult second day in Hyderabad. Doherty and Maxwell eventually earned some rewards after toiling through a 370-run stand between Cheteshwar Pujara and M Vijay, the third-highest Test partnership ever compiled against Australia for any wicket by any country.Maxwell broke the stand when he had Vijay caught tucking a ball to leg slip and it started a more pleasant period for the team in which they collected 9 for 116. Maxwell finished with 4 for 127 and Doherty picked up 3 for 131. After the day’s play, Doherty said the 20-minute meeting Warne had with the players after the loss in Chennai had reminded them that even the best foreign spinners have found India a tough assignment.”We knew it was going to be hard. They’re very good players of spin,” Doherty said. “Warnie came down and spoke to the spinning group post first Test and he said he averaged 45 over here, Murali averaged 47 or something like that – I’m not sure if they’re accurate but that’s what he said. So some of the best bowlers in the world do battle over here.”We knew it was going to be tough but it’s just about grinding away. They weren’t just going to walk off. You’ve got to keep going and really try to apply some pressure and move your field and just try little things, which is what we did. Maxi got that breakthrough and after that it got a little bit easier. I was prepared. The two Tests I’ve played previously were that tough. I know how tough it can be.”Doherty turned a few balls past the bat and had a very close lbw shout turned down when Pujara was on 174 but eventually claimed his first wicket when R Ashwin edged to second slip. Before that delivery, Doherty’s Test bowling average had crept up to 143.33, but by the end of the innings his three wickets had brought it down to 72.83. He conceded that until the edge from Ashwin, it felt like a breakthrough just wasn’t going to come.”It was starting to look that way, particularly with that close lbw which I thought was pretty good,” Doherty said. “Things just didn’t seem to be going my way. I was trying to work out my Test bowling average there at one stage because I came into the game at a hundred. In the last five or six overs, it was just more pleasing how the ball started to come out. It did take a while for it to take a bit of rhythm. To get a couple of wickets was nice as well.”Doherty knows that his place in the team is far from secure and that offspinner Nathan Lyon will be in contention for a recall for the third Test in Mohali. A phlegmatic type of player who takes criticism in his stride and knows his game well, Doherty said he was not fussed by the debate around his place in the team, including comments from Stuart MacGill last week that he “is not a Test bowler”.”I am well aware there are people that want me in the team and people that don’t want me in the team,” he said, “but that is the nature of being at this level.”

Shadab Nazar routs his home state

Shadab Nazar, a corporal in the Air Force, routed UP for 134 on the way to his third five-for in his debut first-class season

Abhishek Purohit in Indore06-Jan-2013″We don’t want star players. We want performers,” Wing commander Deepak Bhaskar, the Services manager, had said before the start of their quarter-final against Uttar Pradesh, when asked about the big-name players in the opposition. Performance was what he got from his players on day one. Leading them was fast bowler Shadab Nazar, a corporal in the Air Force, who routed UP for 134 on the way to his third five-for in his debut first-class season.Nazar, 25, ironically hails from UP and played age-group cricket for the state. He was part of the same sports hostel set-up in Lucknow where Suresh Raina and RP Singh come from, before he was recruited by Bhaskar into the Air Force. Today, he showed no mercy to his former state-mates as he bustled in with a run-up full of energy and found generous bounce from the Holkar Stadium pitch to claim 5 for 51.Nazar’s been with Services for six years now, but broke into their first-class side only this season, though he played a couple of one-dayers in early 2010. He’s already become a potent part of the side’s fast-bowling attack, along with Suraj Yadav and Nishan Singh, and has played all their nine games so far in the season to pick up 30 wickets at an average of 23.56.”It doesn’t matter how big the batsman’s reputation is. In the end, it is all about putting the ball in the right areas,” Nazar said. He added more zip to the Services attack as soon as he was introduced first change and dismissed three of the top six UP batsmen. “My approach was to just keep it on a tight length,” he said.Nazar felt the pitch had eased out slightly after the morning session in which UP lost seven wickets but it was still not easy for the batsmen. Bhaskar said the deliveries that zipped through had decreased in number but were still enough of a threat. The UP attack has delivered four outright wins in the season and it was quite an achievement for Services to earn a lead of 20 runs by stumps with five wickets in hand. Even more so, considering they had to redo their batting order following the unavailability of the captain Soumik Chatterjee, who hurt his knee while fielding in the deep. Chatterjee was taken for an MRI scan, the results of which were awaited. The seriousness of his injury was evident when, unable to walk, he was carried from the dressing room to the team bus by his team-mates.What part, if any, Chatterjee will be able to play in the remainder of the match was unclear but for a determined Services side, it is just one of the several odds they have to tackle.

Mushfiqur Rahim has been retained as Bangladesh captain for the Asia Cup, starting March 11 in Mirpur*. This comes a day after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced a 14-member squad for the tournament. The demotion of opening batsman Tamim Iqbal to the reserves and the inclusion of allrounder Mashrafe Mortaza are among a host of changes in the squad. Bangladesh’s selectors have dropped four of the 15 players who were part of the home ODI series against Pakistan in December 2011, demoted two to reserve status, and called up five. They also continued to not pick Mohammad Ashraful. The chief selector Akram Khan, however, said that dropping Tamim was not the panel’s decision but that of the Bangladesh Cricket Board president Mustafa Kamal. “Tamim Iqbal was dropped by Mustafa Kamal,” he told . “He was in the team that we submitted [for approval].”The selectors had received favourable fitness reports on both Mortaza and Tamim ahead of their meeting to pick the Asia Cup squad. Mortaza had led Dhaka Gladiators to victory in the inaugural season of the BPL, but Tamim played only two games for Chittagong Kings because of a groin injury. The five players called up to the squad were batsman Nazimuddin, wicketkeeper batsmen Jahurul Islam and Anamul Haque, Mortaza, and fast bowler Shahadat Hossain. Anamul, 19, is the only uncapped player in the squad.Alok Kapali and Shahriar Nafees, allrounder Naeem Islam and medium-pacer Rubel Hossain were dropped from the squad that played Pakistan. Tamim and medium-pace allrounder Farhad Reza, who were also part of the Pakistan series, were among the reserves for the Asia Cup.*March 6,14.30 GMT – This story was amended when the BCB announced that Mushfiqur had been named captain

Luan abriu o placar para o Tricolor gaúcho ainda no primeiro tempo e o jovem Lincoln, no último lance, deixou tudo igual: 1 a 1.

LEI DO EX INDIRETA?

A PRIMEIRA VEZ

LINCOLN BRILHA NO FIM

Guptill ton takes Auckland to thrilling win

Scorecard
Auckland prevailed over Canterbury in a thrilling high-scoring encounter at the Mainpower Oval in Rangiora, thanks to an unbeaten century from Martin Guptill, who smashed eight sixes in his 120. Guptill almost single-handedly guided his team during its chase of 184. Auckland lost two wickets inside the first three overs in the chase but Guptill kept the game on from one end.Though Auckland lost wickets at regular intervals, the batsmen who followed chipped in long enough to support Guptill. Anaru Kitchen, Gareth Hopkins and Colin Munro gave Guptill company in important partnerships, and Ronnie Hira helped finish the game off. With 10 needed off the final over, Auckland managed nine off the first five balls. Hira swung the final delivery, Andrew Ellis, for six to seal victory.Canterbury’s score of 183 centered on three knocks, of 41, 45 and 42 from George Worker, captain Peter Fulton and Dean Brownlie respectively. They were 163 for 9 at one stage after a collapse where they lost 7 for 63, but No.11 Mitchell Claydon took them to 183.

Srikkanth says fatigue not an issue

Chief selector Kris Srikkanth has blamed India’s collective batting failure for their poor performances, and said it had nothing to do with fatigue or poor preparation in the lead-up to the series

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Aug-2011

Kris Srikkanth says the failure of India’s batsmen to click as a unit has been one of the reasons for the defeat•Getty Images

Kris Srikkanth, India’s chief selector, has blamed the collective batting failure for series defeat in England, and said the loss had nothing to do with fatigue or poor preparation.”If you see the FTP, all countries are playing cricket 365 days a year whether England or Australia,” Srikkanth said. “It is not the Indians only. The fact is that cricket is being played the whole year in whatever format – Test, ODI or Twenty20. So I don’t think that it is the fatigue factor for the performance in England.”However in the last 12 months India have played more Tests than any other team and more one-day games than anyone except Pakistan. In addition to 14 Tests and 29 ODIs over the past year, India’s players also took part in the gruelling IPL, which began within a week of the World Cup final. In the first three Tests this series, India have not managed to post a total in excess of 300, and Rahul Dravid is the only batsman to have averaged more than 40. Srikkanth said the batting had failed to perform as a unit. “The batting did not click for us. In the Indian side, if batting clicks everything clicks. We also did not do well in bowling and fielding. England bowling attack is ideally suited for the conditions.”It is a fact that our top five batsmen have not clicked in the series so far. But the same bunch of cricketers have been doing well during the last couple of years. The same combination had defeated South Africa in South Africa. It our bad luck that in this particular tour nothing has clicked for us.”India had England struggling at 124 for 8 in the first innings at Trent Bridge, but a ninth-wicket 74-run partnership between Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann played a crucial role in England getting to 221. Srikkanth said India’s failure to capitalise on the opportunity was one of the key turning points in the series. “It is a question of mental toughness and our cricketers are mentally very tough … [but] at 124 for 8, if you look at it psychologically … psychologically there we lost the battle,” he told .The BCCI has been criticised by former cricketers for its failure to prioritise Test cricket, but Srikkanth defended the Indian board. “Let us not indulge in the blame game – on the players or the administrators or the BCCI. Nobody is to be blamed and it’s not the time for that. It is just that we are going through a bad phase.”England have replaced India at the top of the Test rankings, but while Srikkanth was confident India would be able to bounce back, he said it was time to rebuild the team. “We have to learn from the series in England, look into what went wrong. We also have to identify and support new talent when the time comes,” he said.”We all have to put our heads together and plan for the future,” Srikkanth told the . “We have to start the process all over again without complaining. We have to try our various combinations to get the best team like we did before the World Cup. We even dropped Yuvraj Singh, who came back strongly into the ODI team and left a huge impact on the tournament. We want to do similar things now.”

O clássico será realizado no Nilton Santos.
