Southampton: Defeat to Everton on Saturday would show no progress from 2018/19

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

You don’t need to be a genius to realise that Southampton’s season so far has been abysmal.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have won just two of their 11 Premier League games, drawing two and losing seven – the second-most amount of defeats out of any team in the top-flight this term.

They have also conceded the most amount of goals with 27 concessions in 11 games, while they have also scored just ten goals themselves – the third-least in the division.

Despite all of that, perhaps the bleakest realisation of the campaign could arrive on Saturday.

If Southampton lose to the Toffees at St Mary’s this weekend, they will be sat on the exact same number of points as they were at this stage of last season under Mark Hughes’ guidance.

After the 12th Premier League game of the 2018/19 season, the Saints sat 17th following a 1-1 draw with Watford, a game that prompted furious post-match interviews from both Hughes and Charlie Austin following a mistake from referee Simon Hooper.

This is extremely worrying for Southampton.

It just goes to prove that, even after a new managerial appointment and two marquee big-money arrivals in the form of Che Adams and Moussa Djenepo, there may be next to no actual progress from the Saints.

In last season’s instance, Hughes was sacked just two games later after a draw with Manchester United, which highlights the situation that Hasenhuttl finds himself in at St Mary’s.

To see almost no progress be made in 12 months must be pretty demoralising for the former RB Leipzig boss, his playing staff, the coaches, the owners and, most importantly, the supporters, who may feel groundhog day emotions at St Mary’s if Marco Silva’s side run out victorious this weekend.

Even if the Saints do come away with the three points, it is a sad state of affairs to see such little progress be made and sums up where the south coast outfit are right now.

Spurs fans worried about prospect of Lo Celso injury

Tottenham Hotspur fans are worried that Giovani Lo Celso could sustain an injury during his time with Argentina.

The summer signing from La Liga club Real Betis, who has initially joined the club on loan, has played a total of 46 minutes in the Premier League thus far this season, with a further 11 coming in the Champions League.

He sustained a hip injury the last time he linked up with the national team that subsequently ruled him out of five domestic outings and their first two European fixtures of the season. Spurs won just two of those games and were thumped 7-2 by Bayern Munich in north London.

And supporters are worried about a repeat as Argentina prepare to take on Brazil and Uruguay in November.

Indeed, a number have taken to Twitter to express their fears about the playmaker struggling to stay healthy across the coming fixtures.

Leeds would be right to let Ryan Edmondson leave on loan

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Ryan Edmondson has been a bit of an enigma at Leeds United over the past couple of seasons.

The striker has been featuring for the U23s over the past 12 months, and those performances have led to the fanbase clamouring for him to get a first-team opportunity in the near future.

Unfortunately, supporters may not get their wish as recent reports indicate that Leeds have some rather different plans for the youngster.

What’s the story then?

Football Insider are reporting that Edmondson could be sent out on loan in January.

The report also states that this may only be the case if Leeds bring in another striking option, and that is a real possibility as the article also states that Marcelo Bielsa is getting fed up of the team’s woes in front of goal despite their dominance in virtually every game.

You can understand the Argentine’s frustrations as the xG league table shows that United should be running away with the league rather than sitting in third place as they currently are.

Find out what happened when a world-record-holding freestyler attempting skills with the worst pair of boots available on eBay in the video below…

Right decision

Letting Edmondson go out on loan makes a lot of sense, and if Leeds are trying to bring in another striker in January it is seemingly the right thing to do.

The striker has already proved himself at U23 level, and it’s time for him to make the step up to senior football.

Playing him for the first-team at Leeds is a bit too much of a risk as there is a lot riding on this season in terms of promotion, but if they loan him out to a League One or League Two side he can gain valuable experience while not having to play under immense pressure.

Failing to send him out on loan would only be wasting his time. After all, this is a youngster who played for the senior side in pre-season and scored a hat-trick.

On that evidence, he deserves to be playing first-team football, something he’s failed to achieve in competitive action throughout 2019/20. Leeds would only stagnate the 18-year-old by keeping him for the second half of the current campaign.

Spurs fans slam Danny Rose’s performance vs Watford

Tottenham Hotspur fans have slammed Danny Rose after the club drew 1-1 with Watford on Saturday.

The England left-back was actually linked with a move to the Hornets in the summer and was spotted at the club’s training ground on transfer deadline day.

Obviously, no move was completed and Rose has since played in every Premier League game, bar the 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Nevertheless, fans were not impressed with his display against the Hornets as Spurs failed to beat the team currently rooted to the bottom of the table. Watford, indeed, have yet to win this season.

Per WhoScored, Rose had 82 touches of the ball, but he won just one tackle from the four he attempted, while also being dribbled past on three occasions. He failed to record a single interception.

And supporters have taken to Twitter to criticise the 29-year-old.

Tottenham’s predicted XI to face Southampton

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur will look to put three successive miserable performances and results behind them when they host Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.

The north London outfit followed up a disappointing 2-2 draw with Olympiacos in the Champions League and a 2-1 defeat to Leicester City in the Premier League with a Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Colchester United on Tuesday night.

Mauricio Pochettino rung the changes for the trip to Essex, and we expect him to do so again given the embarrassment and those players that came in failing to take their opportunity, as well as they fact they are returning to English top flight action.

Here is the XI we think the Argentine will select against his former employers…

In goal, Hugo Lloris returns having missed the clash against the Foxes following the birth of his baby, and having played back-up to Paulo Gazzaniga against their League Two opponents in midweek.

Danny Rose, Serge Aurier and Toby Alderweireld also come back into the XI having been rested completely in the cup, but one man who did play then keeps his spot – Davinson Sanchez.

Jan Vertonghen just doesn’t appear to be himself right now and having given away a penalty against Olympiacos, he probably should have done more to close down James Maddison for Leicester’s winner.

Given Southampton have pace up top, Sanchez could be a more suitable option for the out-of-form Belgian here.

We are tipping Pochettino to revert to the 4-2-3-1 formation that has served him so well previously, and that means one of Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko or Tanguy Ndombele sits this one out.

We think it will be the latter, who just hasn’t appeared up to pace in recent matches following his return from injury.

Behind first name on the team-sheet Harry Kane, we predict the Argentine will go with Son Heung-min, Dele Alli and Erik Lamela as his three attacking midfielders, as he looks to press Saints from the start.

That means no spot for Christian Eriksen, who picked up a 3/10 rating from Football London for his latest Champions League outing and missed a penalty in the shoot-out against Colchester.

Leeds’ Jack Clarke has to put his big boy pants on according to Joe Urquhart

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Joe Urquhart has given his verdict on Jack Clarke when speaking to episode 66 of the Inside Elland Road Podcast, suggesting he has nowhere to hide.

What’s he said?

Clarke has been a topic of debate amongst supporters this season and for good reason too.

The youngster joined Tottenham in the summer and then arrived back at Leeds on loan but hasn’t really played.

He’s featured just twice in the League Cup but recently scored for one of England’s youth sides over the international break.

Issuing his thoughts on the 18-year-old, Urquhart spoke of his concerns and suggested what he needs to do after a mini confidence boost. He told the Inside Elland Road Podcast:

“He just hasn’t been the player everyone thought since he first burst onto the scene in February time. He’s not really kicked on. He’s a £9m footballer now so there’s nowhere for him to hide. People are very very aware of him.

“When he first came on the scene he maybe had that element of surprise and pace to cut back inside. It’s time for him to put his big boy pants on.”

Clarke’s confidence on the up?

The winger has looked a shadow of the player that first burst onto the scene last term. He started to make his name after scoring against Aston Villa but has struggled significantly since.

The fact he’s only played twice and not appeared in the Championship in 2019/20 is evidence of that.

Clarke was withdrawn at half time against Stoke and then refused to shake the hand of the player that replaced him in an U23 outing against Bristol City on 85 minutes.

However, his confidence may be on the rise following the international break.

The teenager scored a late winner for England U20s against Switzerland earlier in the week, something that surely will have been of great relief to him.

The task now, though, is sorting himself out at Leeds. Urquhart is right to suggest he has nowhere to hide and the fact he’s been discussed regularly by fans shows that.

In the words of the YEP journalist, he needs to put his big boy pants on and show what he’s made of.

Arsenal’s defensive woes continue with Sokratis’ calamitous showing

[ad_pod ]This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…ÂArsenal threw away a two-goal lead as Watford came from behind to salvage a point at home. The Hornets put up 31 shots against Unai Emery’s error-prone backline and probably were more worthy of the points despite looking down and out at half-time.Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored an 11-minute brace, but that was to be for nothing as Sokratis handed Tom Cleverley an easy chance to get one back before David Luiz conceded a penalty less than ten minutes from time to give Roberto Pereyra a much-deserved equaliser. The Gunners have been fired at more than any other side in the top five European leagues – having already faced 96 shots this season.

So maybe the problem wasn’t Shkodran Mustafi after all?

Sokratis’ performance was particularly a standout, for all the wrong reasons.

Aside from his one error leading to a goal, he lost possession six times and managed to win just half of his aerial duels.

WhoScored gave the 31-year-old the worst rating of anyone on the pitch, substitutes included, with a lowly 5.31.

Last season, Mustafi was singled out for several of Arsenal’s defensive problems, leading him to be booed on multiple occasions.

The German World Cup winner has since been frozen out of Emery’s starting lineup and even matchday squad as a result, but this latest showing from Sokratis highlights how the problem lies much deeper than merely with one player.

How do football vloggers afford to watch their team week in, week out? Find out in the video below…

Spare a thought for defender Calum Chambers, who went on loan to Fulham last season and, despite relegation, was one of their better players, which duly earned him a chance in pre-season.

He came in on the opening day against Newcastle United and kept a clean sheet, but was dropped and they’ve conceded in every game since.

Sokratis managed just one blocked shot and zero interceptions despite the onslaught the home side launched with their 31 shots – a rather feeble effort from a centre-back.

Aston Villa fans react to Callum O’Hare speculation as Doncaster circle

[ad_pod ]

According to Football Insider, Doncaster Rovers are in talks with Aston Villa over a potential loan move for 21-year-old attacker Callum O’Hare.

O’Hare has made nine first-team appearances for Villa but could find it difficult to secure regular action this season following the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

Football Insider have claimed that Villa have high hopes for the attacker and are keen to tie him to a new contract before any possible loan exit.

And it does appear that the England Under-20 international will be leaving Villa Park on a short-term deal.

O’Hare actually spent the second half of last season on loan with Carlisle United in League Two – scoring three times and providing three assists in 16 appearances for the club.

Playmaker: Ravel Morrison’s "last chance" could make or break Sheffield United’s season

If Ravel Morrison’s story in football has taught us anything, it’s that talent can only go so far if you don’t have the right attitude.

[ad_pod ]

The former Manchester United youth academy product was once claimed by Rio Ferdinand as the most talented player former Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson saw during his time at the club (per JOE), but as we all know, the now 26-year-old midfielder never lived up to the promise he once possessed with the Premier League giants.

After spells across the world in countries such as Italy, Mexico and Sweden, Morrison returns to the Premier League for the 2019/20 season with Sheffield United (per BBC Sport), signing a one-year deal with the Blades as Chris Wilder aims to impress in his first season in charge in the top-flight, and for Ingood Nick of Two-Footed Talk in the video below, the signing of the former United youth player could be the playmaker’s last chance of achieving his once obvious potential.

Morrison is one of seven players to join Sheffield United this summer, with the Blades recently bringing back goalkeeper Dean Henderson from Manchester United on loan for a second season, while Ben Osborn has also been signed from Nottingham Forest for an undisclosed fee (per BBC Sport).

Sheffield United fans, will Morrison be a success at the club? Let us know!

Everton’s Joao Virginia talks show they are backing their youngsters to make the grade

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton are in talks with Under-23 goalkeeper Joao Virginia over a new contract, whilst he has also joined Reading on a season-long loan deal.

What’s the word, then?

Well, tying Virginia down to fresh terms won’t be the first move the Toffees have made in securing the future of their young stars this summer, not by any means.

The Merseysiders have already been successful in getting as many as eight precocious young talents to commit their future to the club since the end of last season.

Thogden challenged himself to DM 100 footballers on Instagram. Find out who replied in the video below…

Everton have managed to get Ellis Simms, Einar Iversen, Mackenzie Hunt, Korede Adedoyin, Kieran Phillips, Nicolas Hansen, Joe Anderson and Manasse Mampala to put pen to paper on fresh deals, highlighting their intentions to focus on youth and back their young talent.

Clearly back their youngsters to make the grade

After David Unsworth’s incredible success with the Under-23 side in the 2018/19 campaign, the Toffees are clearly backing their young players to make it.

They were crowned Premier League 2 champions last season, where a number of burgeoning youngsters such as Lewis Gibson and Virginia put their names in the limelight.

In the Under-18’s, Simms hit a quite ridiculous 37 goals in just 29 games, which has attracted interest from German champions Bayern Munich.

We already know what the Goodison Park academy is capable of. It has been home to some excellent talents in previous years such as Wayne Rooney, Jack Rodwell and Ross Barkley, all of whom have gone on to play for England.

However, a true star hasn’t really emerged into the first-team since Barkley – there has evidently been an emphasis on rewarding a number of young players for their efforts in the shape of new contracts though, something that the Toffees wouldn’t do if they weren’t backing the majority of them to make the grade.
