Aston Villa: Fans fume at Gerrard links

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been linked with a move to Aston Villa and, as to be expected, it has caused quite the stir on social media.

According to an exclusive report from Football Insider, Villa chief executive Christian Purslow holds a “strong interest” in hiring Gerrard ahead of the summer.

The pair know each other well from their time at Liverpool, with the report claiming that Dean Smith’s position as Villa manager is uncertain in the long-term despite a solid season.

Villa sit ninth in the table with nine games remaining, racking up 47 points so far.

Gerrard is under contract at Ibrox until 2024 and it remains to be seen what his views are on a possible move to Villa Park.

Villa fans react

Football Insider shared the story on their Twitter page on Thursday morning. It didn’t take long for numerous Villa fans to have their say on the story, with one describing it as ‘stupid’.

Villa dropped the ball with Andre Green

When Andre Green broke onto the scene at Aston Villa, there was no questioning that those within the inner circle at the club thought they had an absolute gem on their hands.

The winger made his debut for Villa as a 17-year-old under then-manager Remi Garde, coming on for half an hour in a 2-0 Premier League defeat to Tottenham in 2016.

The Birmingham Mail revealed at the time that Green was being “seen as one of the club’s most talented youngsters”, but sadly for both him and the club, things just didn’t work out.

After making just 48 appearances for Villa, the now 22-year-old was released by his boyhood club last summer, and he went a good six months without finding a new home before eventually being signed by Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday.

Former Villa boss Tim Sherwood has openly admitted that he’s been left stunned by how things have gone for Green, and insisted that had he been at the helm for longer, it may have worked out differently.

He said: “I love Andre and I’m very surprised. He’s got ridiculous pace and goes past people like Ronaldo used to. It’s as if they’re not there. He’s got great ability but has been unfortunate with a few injuries. Hopefully, he can get over them. Players do in the end.”

Sherwood added: “If I’d have had longer in the job, he would have played. He could go at players and score goals but just needed to play men’s football and step up. He was ready for the step up.

“I was looking at him to start the 2015-16 season and then he got injured in pre-season, in Portugal in our training camp, so it was devastating for the boy. It’s just an unfortunate sliding-doors moment that I went and someone else came in and never valued the talent he had.”

As Sherwood says, injuries certainly haven’t been helpful to Green, but Villa surely could have done more in getting the best out of his enormous talent and potential. The club seriously dropped the ball with the £900,000-rated winger.

Meanwhile, Villa could wreak havoc in the Premier League by signing this star…

Celtic: Paul Lambert sends firm message to Dominic McKay

Former Celtic star Paul Lambert has sent a warning to the club’s new chief executive Dominic McKay ahead of what will be one of the most crucial summers in Celtic’s recent history.

Lambert warns McKay

Neil Lennon resigned as the club’s manager on Wednesday morning and Peter Lawwell had previously announced that he would be leaving Parkhead at the end of the season too – paving the way for a whole new era.

Various names have been mentioned to be in the frame for the role, Sky Sports’ Jim White stated that Scotland manager Steve Clarke, Belgium head coach Roberto Martinez and former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez are names who could be targetted by the Hoops.

Back in Decemeber, Paul Lambert was also linked with a move to Celtic, and he’s recently been speaking about his former club.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Lambert did not mix his words while discussing the seismic task that McKay has at Parkhead.

“Rugby is a totally different sport,” he said. “If he thinks he will go in there and get applauded from everybody, that doesn’t quite work in the Glasgow goldfish bowl.

“He’s going to have to hit the ground running. He’s going to have to win. Peter Lawwell did a fantastic job [in that role] over the last few years.

“At Celtic, you have to win. It doesn’t matter if Barcelona, Manchester United or Manchester City came to town tomorrow. The fans expect you to win. Some people can’t handle it. Can you win title after title?

“You have to realise, if you finish second, you fail. The new chief executive needs to look at the bigger picture. You have to get trophies back and get the pendulum swinging back your way.”

When asked whether he would consider becoming the next Celtic manager, he said: “That’s not my life anymore. I don’t want to tarnish the good feelings I have with the Celtic fans.

“We won a hell of a lot, stopping Rangers win 10-in-a-row in 1998. That was an incredible achievement. Maybe I’ll go back as a fan, that’s all I can say.”

Transfer Tavern Verdict

Lambert is spot on here. It is going to be a massive summer for the green and white side of Glasgow, a summer that McKay simply has to get right from every angle.

If next season is similar to the 2020/21 campaign, then McKay will automatically be an unpopular figure with the Hoops supporters almost immediately, which he will obviously be keen to avoid.

The task ahead is enormous and McKay simply cannot afford to fail at the first attempt – or it could be a long way back for him.

Deadline day: Liverpool move now in jeopoardy

Today is the day of reckoning for Liverpool. Will they finally fix their defensive issues? Only time will tell for Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards.

What’s the word?

Liverpool have agreed a fee of £2m to sign Preston defender Ben Davies on deadline day but unfortunately, a move to bring in another centre-half is in serious jeopardy.

Paul Joyce revealed that Liverpool actually want to sign two defenders today, but they have already suffered a blow in their pursuit to do so.

That’s because a deal for Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car is now unlikely to go through. Liverpool have made contact with the French side to sign him but according to RMC (via Get French Football News), they’ve put the brakes on a potential deal.

Marseille are finding it difficult to identify a replacement for Caleta-Car and they won’t sell unless they find one.

The player was all set to jet out to England last night but will now likely be staying in France.

Edwards sweating

The news that Liverpool wanted two central defenders today came as a surprise. Thus, with just hours left before the deadline slams shut at 11pm, this will be a colossal blow to Edwards’ plans.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/liverpool-deadline-day-latest-news-transfer-rumours-and-more” title=”Deadline day is here: Read the latest Liverpool news, transfer rumours and more!”]

The club have needed defenders for a while now. Virgil van Dijk was injured back in October during the Merseyside derby and since then, both Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have also suffered from periods on the sidelines.

As a result, Jordan Henderson has been forced to play in defence on four occasions, while Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams have also been thrown in at the deep end.

Signing a player like Davies from the Championship is a gamble. It’s not every day that a player from Preston signs for a Champions League and Premier League winning team. Despite the transfer fee, there’s no guaranteeing he’ll be a success.

Therefore, signing another defender is critical for Edwards. At the moment, it feels unlikely that will happen. Liverpool’s sporting director is set for a stressful day.

Romano drops Man Utd transfer update on Ramos

Manchester United reportedly face stiff competition in their pursuit of Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos.

What’s the word?

Reports in recent months have revealed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is searching for defensive reinforcements in the summer and has targeted the highly-rated Ramos as one of his top targets.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils are still interested in signing the 34-year-old veteran, but Paris Saint-Germain are also keeping tabs on the centre-back.

Spanish publication Todofichajes.com recently claimed his brother Rene Ramos is set to travel to England to discuss terms on a two-year deal at Old Trafford.

However, contrary to these latest reports, Romano also claims United have not made contact with the defender’s representatives in the last few weeks. However, PSG’s reported interest should force Ed Woodward’s hand before it’s too late.

Ed Woodward must act now

It’s no secret that the French champions are incredibly wealthy, but stealing Ramos from right under their noses would send a real statement of intent to the rest of the world.

United reached a new low in defeat to Sheffield United last month which has laid bare the full extent of their defensive woes. Promoting young players like Axel Tuanzebe is the right thing to do for the future, but they also need players they can rely on right now.

Harry Maguire has been expected to shoulder the burden of responsibility at Old Trafford but even the former Leicester City man can’t perform miracles and he needs an experienced and seasoned veteran alongside him to take his game to a whole new level.

Ramos, therefore, could be the perfect fit. Given his age, there may be some concerns about his lack of pace, but his experience and class could help to plug the gap in their leaky defence.

Despite his age, Ramos – who earns around £312,000-per-week at the Bernabeu – is currently averaging 1.1 tackles per game while Victor Lindelof has made just 0.8 tackles this term. Crucially, he also chips in with 1.5 interceptions per 90 across all competitions, suggesting he boasts a fine positional sense and awareness as well.

Now United could attempt to strike a deal with his agent to bring the centre-back to Old Trafford this summer as Solskjaer gears up to plan for the future ahead and for another crack at the Premier League title next term.

AND in other news, Manchester United urged to sign West Ham star Declan Rice by Trevor Sinclair…

Wolves unlikely to sign Olivier Giroud

When Patrick Cutrone was brought back to Wolves this month, it wasn’t thought that he’d be the man to replace the injured Raul Jimenez.

However, the longer the window goes on, the more it feels like Jeff Shi won’t invest in the first-team set-up.

What’s the word?

The Old Gold have been linked with a number of forwards this month. Stephane Bahoken has been on the club’s radar again while Andy Delort and Diego Costa have also been named as possible targets.

Yet, it doesn’t look as though any striker will arrive if a fee is involved. That’s because according to The Mirror, Wolves don’t have the finances.

They report that Nuno Santo has aborted interest in both Divock Origi and Olivier Giroud this month after being told to forget about spending big money in January.

This should come as a considerable setback for Wolves given their lack of promising options in that third of the pitch.

Disaster on the cards

If Wolves don’t sign a striker this month they can wave goodbye to securing European football again.

Their front line has been far from productive since Jimenez fractured his skull and after being withdrawn against Arsenal, they have won just two of the nine matches their star striker has missed.

That’s a shambolic record for a squad that on paper has enormous potential. Deputy Fabio Silva has netted just the solitary goal since his £35.6m move and the very fact they’ve recalled Cutrone says a lot.

On loan at Fiorentina in the first half of the season, he hasn’t scored all term.

Therefore, signing someone like Giroud would have been of enormous benefit. The Frenchman is one of the most pedigreed target men around and like Jimenez, would offer goals and the ability to bring others into play.

The Chelsea striker has scored nine goals in 16 outings this season, four of which came in one Champions League outing against Sevilla. It was a display that Glenn Hoddle described as “out of this world” as the 105 cap international demonstrated his enormous qualities.

Giroud hasn’t always been the best finisher but when he does find the net it’s always in emphatic fashion. With Shi and Nuno hunting for short-term options, they wouldn’t find much better than the 34-year-old.

Eden Hazard once labelled him the best target man in world football and if that doesn’t fill the Molineux faithful with confidence not much will. Like Jimenez, he is similarly adept in the air.

This term, the Wolves target has won 1.7 aerial duels per match. The Mexican, on the other hand, has won 1.5 battles a game.

Unlike a host of other players on Wolves’ radar this month, Giroud is proven in the Premier League, a ticked box that is hugely underestimated.

With Jimenez out injured and Nuno needing a proven first-class striker to deputise for him until he returns, signing Giroud is a necessity, not a luxury. Shi must find the money from somewhere or be staring at a huge mistake.

Wolves cannot afford to miss out on European football for a successive season with the players they have.

Spurs can land Mourinho his next John Terry with swoop for Ben White

The man everyone appears to be after, Ben White, has once again been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur…

What’s the word?

According to Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas, Spurs are one of several top Premier League teams monitoring the Brighton and Hove Albion defender ahead of the New Year.

Both Manchester United and Chelsea are also mentioned in the article as the 23-year-old continues to impress following a successful loan spell with Championship winners Leeds United last term.

In the summer, White signed a new four-year contract extension and has since become a regular under Graham Potter.

Mourinho’s next Terry?

The report goes on to claim that that the Seagulls centre-back is among the top-four defenders in the English top-flight right now, ranking behind Blues duo Kurt Zouma and Thiago Silva as well as Arsenal’s Gabriel.

White has started all ten of their league outings this term, averaging two aerial duels won, 2.1 interceptions, 2.2 tackles per game as well as a passing accuracy of over 80%, per WhoScored.

Despite the signing of Joe Rodon before the domestic deadline, Jose Mourinho could ultimately do with another option in the role as the club did lose Jan Vertonghen on top of sending Juan Foyth out on loan.

And now with Toby Alderweireld on the treatment table, the Portuguese boss is left short on bodies.

That’s excluding the fact that he doesn’t fancy Davinson Sanchez either as the £42m flop has failed to start five straight league games, even in the absence of his Belgian teammate.

Unlike Rodon, White has proven his worth at this level with a string of PL appearances, but it is instead his comparisons to a former great that should have Spurs eager to secure him at all costs.

Sky Sports pundit Andy Hinchcliffe told their EFL podcast: “I totally agree with [the] Stones and Ferdinand [comparisons] but also, you put a bit of John Terry or Gary Cahill in there, which I think he’s got, imagine the centre-half.”

The ‘Special One’ won three PL titles and one FA Cup with Terry as his captain, so he must be relishing the chance to unearth a modern-day prototype of his star man.

White has been dubbed “phenomenal” as well as a “special player” yet it still only valued at €20m (£18m) by CIES.

However, it’s thought that his price tag is much closer to the £50m number, according to The Sun, so it’ll be on Daniel Levy to pull out his chequebook either in January or in the summer window.

It could be the decider between a good and great season.
