Derby County dealt Lee Buchanan injury blow

Derby County have been dealt a major blow regarding the fitness of Lee Buchanan ahead of their upcoming Carabao Cup tie.

What’s the latest?

Speaking in the build-up to the Rams’ EFL Cup fixture against Salford City on Tuesday evening, Wayne Rooney shed some light on the current state of his Derby County side.

One player the 35-year-old discussed was Buchanan, with the left-back having missed the club’s Championship opener against Huddersfield Town on Saturday due to a thigh injury.

And, it would appear as if the 20-year-old will once again be watching from the stands at Pride Park on Tuesday, with Rooney revealing that the England U21 international has not recovered in time for the cup clash, as well as claiming the defender could be a doubt for the trip to Peterborough United on Saturday.

As cited by Derbyshire Live, the manager said: “Lee won’t be involved, he is still recovering. He will be touch and go for next Saturday. We are hoping he is ready for Saturday but will have to wait and see what the next couple of days brings.”

Rooney will be gutted

Derby fans will not need reminding just how threadbare their first-team squad is at present, with Rooney having just 14 outfield players at his disposal, four of whom – Tom Lawrence, Jason Knight, Krystian Bielik and Buchanan – are currently carrying knocks.

As such, while the visit of Salford in the Carabao Cup will not exactly be high on the 35-year-old’s list of must-win games this season – as it would appear likely the Rams will be putting all of their energy into ensuring that they remain in the Championship come the end of the campaign – the fact that Buchanan has not been deemed fit enough to feature will nevertheless have left the manager gutted.

Indeed, the match would have provided the man Rooney dubbed a “top player” with a relatively pressure-free run out to help him ease back into his stride before returning to action in the league.

However, with it looking as if the left-back will remain sidelined for the visit of Salford, as well as potentially missing out on the trip to Peterborough this weekend, the Rams boss may well be forced to start Craig Forsyth in the position once again on Tuesday evening, although both Rooney and the 32-year-old will more than likely wish the defender could sit out the Salford game with the Championship fixtures already coming thick and fast.

Bangalore could host England ODI

The Indian board has said that Bangalore could host one of the seven ODIs between India and England after the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) withdrew its hosting rights for the match. The JSCA informed the board it could not host the November 23 fixture because Tata Steel, which maintains the ground, is yet to agree to a takeover by the association. “As we have received no response despite the deadline set by the JSCA till this afternoon, we have no option but to withdraw from hosting the one dayer,” Rajesh Verma Bobby, the JSCA secretary, said.According to reports Tata was concerned about the condition of the stadium. “We are awaiting full inspection of the stadium. O'Brien back to lead Bermudan attack

Fast bowler George O’Brien is back in the Bermuda team to face Canada later this month. He has been named in a 15-man squad for the one-day-series and four-day Intercontinental Cup game against the Canadians in Toronto. As well as recalling O’Brien and Oronde Bascome, two players who have had run-ins with the board in the past, the selectors took the unusual step of naming those players that had been left out for failing to attend training sessions. Among them were Rangers skipper Janeiro Tucker, St. David’s spinner Delyone Borden, Somerset captain Jacobi Robinson and PHC’s Jason Anderson.Lionel Cann, who has said he is available to play but cannot commit to the training schedule, was omitted as was pace bowler Kevin Hurdle, whose work commitments have prevented him from training.England-based seamer Stefan Kelly will miss the three one-day matches on June 28, 29 and July 1 but will join the squad for the four-day game, starting July 4. Stephen Outerbridge and Jekon Edness, Bermuda’s other UK-based stars, will be in the squad for all four games.Irving Romaine retains his place as skipper and promising young off-spinner Rodney Trott, who captained the Under-19s at the youth World Cup in Malaysia, will make his competitive debut as vice captain.Kyle Hodsoll, McLaren Smith and Tamauri Tucker, all of whom played alongside Trott in Malaysia, are also in the squad.Sammy Robinson, who made his return to the national squad at the Stanford 20-20 tournament and big-hitting Police batsman James Celestine are also included, while regulars Ryan Steede, Dwayne Leverock and OJ Pitcher complete the squad.Bermuda squad Irving Romaine (capt), Rodney Trott, Stephen Outerbridge, Jekon Edness, Stefan Kelly, OJ Pitcher, Dwayne Leverock, Ryan Steede, James Celestine, McLaren Smith, Tamauri Tucker, Samuel Robinson, George O’Brien, Oronde Bascome, Kyle Hodsoll.Reserves: Dennico Hollis, Chris Foggo, Arthur Pitcher. The following players have not attended training and therefore not considered for selection: Janeiro Tucker, Malachi Jones (subsequently withdrew), Delyone Borden, Azeem Pitcher, John Woolnough, Jacobi Robinson, Dion Stovell, Jason Anderson, Glenn Blakeney (Glenn informed the board that he is available to join the programme after the four-day game against Scotland), Nakia Smith and Fique Crockwell. This article is taken from the Bermuda Sun

England players may only have 10-day IPL window

The window in which England’s players will be available to play in the Indian Premier League in 2009 could be as small as ten days

Cricinfo staff09-Jun-2008The window in which England’s players will be available to play in the Indian Premier League in 2009 could be as small as ten days, according to David Collier, the ECB’s chief executive.England return from their Caribbean tour on April 4 and the IPL’s second season gets underway on April 10. But Collier warned that as things stand, Zimbabwe are due to arrive for a Test and one-day series at the end of the month and that the squad would need to be rested ahead of that.”There’s a possibility of players playing in the future,” Collier told the BBC. “But it doesn’t look like the period will be longer than 10 days.”I think it’s common knowledge that the IPL would like more of our players to play … the question is: which tournaments takes priority at which time of the year? What it does look like is that we will finish our tour to the West Indies and there’ll be a 10-day period prior to the players reporting to the first Test match in England.”Clearly that will be something [England coach] Peter Moores will be looking at, that period of the year to see whether players can play and whether that is a window that will be attractive to the players and to other people in the IPL, or other competitions.”However, it seems increasingly unlikely that Zimbabwe will be restored to Test status by then, even if they are allowed entry into the UK, and that might present an opportunity for a shortened replacement tour starting later in May, or even a brief one-day series against Zimbabwe.

Sky Sports back Areola news at West Ham

Dropping an update on live TV (via Football Daily), Sky Sports have come out with their own claims on West Ham’s pursuit of Paris-Saint Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

The Lowdown: Areola to Rush Green?

As reports keep growing, it appears more and more likely that Areola could well become West Ham’s first major summer signing this window.

The 28-year-old, who spent 2020/2021 on loan at Fulham, could be set for a move away from PSG this window as the Hammers also eye a new man between the sticks.

West Ham have extended current number one Lukasz Fabianski’s deal by one year but that hasn’t stopped them looking at possible competition for next season and, possibly, his eventual successor (football.london).

The Latest: Sky Sports drop live TV claim…

Speaking live on air, Sky Sports have now dropped their own update, backing claims that West Ham are currently in talks to sign Areola on a season-long loan with the option to buy.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-updates/” title=”West Ham updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“More breaking transfer news, we knew this would happen after the Euros, that things would ramp up in that respect, and it involves West Ham,” as explained on Sky Sports News (via FD).

“West Ham are in talks with Paris-Saint Germain over signing the goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

“This deal though would be a season-long loan with the option to make it permanent, Areola’s still got another two years on his deal at PSG, and West Ham’s number one for quite some time has been Lukasz Fabianski.

“This would certainly be competition, and maybe even, Areola would be coming as the number one.”

The Verdict: Great option, but not a priority…

News of West Ham’s talks to sign Areola could mean the goalkeeping department is about to be significantly bolstered, but it should it be David Moyes’ priority right now?

The Irons are lacking sufficient depth up front and it may cause issues, especially considering they’ll also be competing in the Europa League group stages.

Michail Antonio’s injury record last season highlights just how much Moyes needs more options up front, and we believe striking a deal for one of West Ham’s forward targets like Tammy Abraham or Roman Yaremchuk should be made first priority.

Fry tips West Ham to move for Adam Armstrong over Ivan Toney

Peterborough director of football Barry Fry has told The Transfer Tavern in an exclusive interview that West Ham are more likely to move for Adam Armstrong than Ivan Toney this summer.

West Ham have been credited with an interest in both strikers. According to Football Insider, the Hammers are one of multiple Premier League sides who are keen on the Blackburn Rovers man.

Elsewhere, The Sun have claimed that Toney is one forward the east London club have identified in their search for reinforcements ahead of the new campaign.

It is the former, though, who Fry sees as the most realistic option for West Ham. He told TT:

“I don’t think West Ham would go to that much [Brentford’s valuation] for Ivan, they wouldn’t.

“Whereas Adam Armstrong, I can see them having a punt on that, because he’d be a lot cheaper.”

Armstrong was in terrific form in the Championship last season, scoring 28 goals in 40 appearances. It makes it little surprise that the Englishman is one striker the Hammers are looking at as manager David Moyes looks to bolster his attacking options.

However, that does not look like it will be an easy deal either, with Football Insider stating that Southampton are winning the race for the 24-year-old.

Hungerford and United Services start with crushing wins

Any hopes that Lymington had of making a positive start to their Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 campaign was shattered by an 86-run defeat at Hungerford

Mike Vimpany05-May-2002Any hopes that Lymington had of making a positive start to their Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 campaign was shattered by an 86-run defeat at Hungerford.Relegated from the ECB-accredited Division 1 last summer, Hungerford have recruited heavily, with Hampshire’s Jason Laney, former Sussex wicketkeeper Nick Wilson and Steve Wyatt all returning to play under new skipper Owen Dawkins. It was all too much for Lymington, who found themselves looking down the barrell of a 250-run mauling from Hungerford, before being dismissed for 164 themselves.Laney (67) and Danny Williams (29) laid the foundations towards a big total with an opening stand of 80, which the middle-order gradually enhanced.Wyatt, with a lively 48, Wilson (25) and Dawkins (25) all profited, with Western Australian youngster Aaron Heal (3-50) removing three of the top six.But Lymington’s resourceful batting failed after left-arm spinner Andy Ford (2-26) had made two important early breakthroughs. Martin Hunt (43), Daniel Peacock (35) and Neil Trestrail (25) guided Lymington to 164 all out, with Laney (3-6) removing the lower-order.Newly promoted Winchester KS also endured a miserable start, losing by a massive 145-run margin against United Services at Burnaby Road. There was little joy for the cathedral city club as US built a sizeable 257-7 around Gary Hounsome (44), John Robson (40), John Mann (29), Mark Toogood (28) and Matt McKeever (28).Martin Taylor (4-35) made inroads for WKS, whose batting fell away badly with only Jimmy Taylor (26) making a worthwhile contribution in a disappointing 112 all out (Damian Carson 3-25).Andy Birch found himself demoted to eighth spot in the order, but turned out to be Easton & Martyr Worthy’s trump card in the three-wicket win at Trojans.Easton, chasing Trojans’ 181-7, were in trouble at 71-5, but Shaun Green (45) and Birch, with an undefeated 43, got the tractor boys home with an over to spare.Mark Stone took 3-33 but Trojans, through James Donaldson (35), Mike Goodall (30), Mario Mohammed (32) and Nigel le Bas (29) got to 181-7.Max Smith, with 58 not out, and Nick Wood, who took 4-38, were match winners in Old Tauntonians & Romsey’s 18-run victory over newly promoted Rowledge. Smith, Ian Tulk (45) and Mike Trodd (25) took the batting credits as OTs reached 196-6 (Ricky Yates 4-35).The Rowledge reply centred around Queenslander Jeff Annings (76), who was eventually eighth man out at 157.Cardiff UCCE’s Chris Yates (34) played well earlier on, but it was Wood’s flight and guile, supported by a handy 2-50 return by Smith, that left Rowledge 18 runs short on 178 all out.

Ex-Leeds ace tips free agent for Elland Road move - exclusive

Former Leeds United man David Norris believes that Paulo Gazzaniga would be a fine signing for the club if they were searching for a back-up to Illan Meslier.

Gazzaniga is set to leave Tottenham Hotspur upon the expiration of his contract at the end of the month.

He spent the second half of the season on loan at La Liga club Elche, playing eight times in the Spanish top-flight and keeping two clean sheets.

The Argentine has been with Spurs since 2017 but is set to end a four-year association with the club at the end of the month.

In total, the former Southampton ‘keeper made 37 appearances for Spurs, regularly deputising for Hugo Lloris whenever the Frenchman was injured.

He was undoubtedly the number two in the squad behind the Spurs captain, and Norris believes he could well be a fine signing for Leeds if they are in the market for a goalkeeper.

Indeed, Kiko Casilla is likely to leave the club this summer after falling out of favour under manager Marcelo Bielsa, and bringing Gazzaniga in would add depth in Meslier’s position.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: “It’s always interesting with keepers because you’re either a number one or you accept that you’re a number two.

“You don’t really go, ‘I’ve done my number two, I want to be a number one now’, and they only want to be a number one. Number two keepers seem to understand that. They are the number two keeper and not many teams will have two number ones, because they’ll have two keepers that want to play all the time, it’s not going to work.

“So it depends on if he’s happy to come from being a number two at Spurs to being a number two at Leeds or whether he’s looking now to move and play somewhere and be a number one.

“Spurs, Leeds, two massive clubs, if you’re number two at Spurs and then number two at Leeds, it’s a sideways move, it’s not a drop down.”
