FIRST-CLASS DEBUT: Mashonaland v Midlands, at Harare Sports Club; 22-24 March 2002
TEST DEBUT: Still awaited
ODI DEBUT: Zimbabwe v Pakistan, at Queens Sports Club; 24 November 2002BIOGRAPHY (November 2002)Zimbabwe’s selectors have acquired a reputation in recent years for plunging young players into international cricket well before they are ready for it, and then dropping them quickly when they don’t make the grade, before leaving them for a year or two before returning to them – if at all. Hopefully Waddington Mwayenga will not suffer such a fate. There was much cynicism when Waddy, as he is usually called, became yet another virtually unknown 18-year-old to be fast-tracked into the national one-day squad to face Pakistan in November 2002. In the second of the five-match series, he was given a place in the team.It was a hard baptism against a Pakistani team that had only narrowly won the first match and was therefore determined to hammer the weak Zimbabwe bowling to build a total that was way beyond Zimbabwe’s reach. Waddy’s figures of none for 74 off nine overs do not show it, but he was the most accurate of Zimbabwe’s often wayward seam bowling attack, pitching a full length and bowling a good line. Yousuf Youhana and Shahid Afridi got after him, but he still maintained a reasonable standard of accuracy under pressure. Given his youth and inexperience, it was a promising start.Waddy’s father is groundsman at the elite St John’s College in Harare, although he did not know the game and was unable to introduce his three sons to the game. It was here that Waddy and his older brother Allan, a CFX Academy student in 2002, first had contact with the game. They used to hang around the school with their father and watch the teams practising in the nets. Coach Bill Flower, father of Andy and Grant, threw the ball to them and soon discovered they had talent. Waddy played no cricket at his junior school, Tomlinson Depot at the police headquarters, but Bill Flower took an interest in him, gave him some coaching and was so impressed with him that he included him in his Harare Stragglers team for players of his age. From the beginning Waddy was primarily a pace bowler. The Stragglers team went to Mutare for the Casuals Cricket Week there and was pleased to take seven wickets in three matches. Waddy won a scholarship to Vainona High School for three years, where he was the star of a very weak side against weak opposition, frequently taking seven or eight wickets in a match. In one match he took all ten wickets to fall, including two hat-tricks, and also scored 95, his highest in any match to date, before being run out by his brother! Then he won a much better scholarship to St John’s itself, sponsored partly by the school and partly by a Mr Carter, a businessman who took an interest in him over the years. His best school performance has to date been six for 14 against Watershed, although he has a number of other six-wicket hauls to his credit. He had already been noted by the national age-group selectors, and represented Zimbabwe at Under-14 and Under-16 level before progressing to the Under-19 side for two years. His most memorable match was an Under-19 World Cup match in New Zealand against Kenya, when he took five wickets for 21 runs. He has also been to Zambia, Namibia, South Africa and Singapore with age-group teams.Waddy also owed his introduction to club cricket to Bill Flower, who took him along to Old Georgians Sports Club at the age of 15, and he has played for them ever since. His best figures for them so far are four wickets for 35 runs against Harare Sports Club during the 2002/03 season. He has also played winter cricket for Shamva.Waddy feels his main strengths as a bowler are his ability to bowl a good length and line, wicket to wicket, coupled with swing away from the right-hander and movement off the seam. “I cut the white ball but really struggle with the red ball,” he says.Waddy is used to fielding in the deep, or at mid-on or mid-off. He is keen to develop his batting and become an all-rounder. His only captaincy experience to date was at Vainona, and he says he has no real ambitions for the job.Besides Bill Flower, Waddy pays tribute to Shane Cloete as a coach with the age-group and Zimbabwe A teams and Mike Seager, a former seam bowler himself, for his constant encouragement. His role model as a pace bowler is the Australian Glenn McGrath: “I think he’s an excellent bowler.”At present Waddy is studying for his A-levels and will continue at school for 2003. After that he wants to follow in Allan’s footsteps at the CFX Academy, and hopes by then that he will be a regular member of the national side. Given the talent he has shown so far, it is a definite possibility.Cricket heroes: Andy Flower.
Toughest opponents: “In my first one-dayer, Shahid Afridi. I really didn’t know where to bowl to him. Also Yousuf Youhana.”
Personal ambitions: “To bowl as well as Glenn McGrath.”
Proudest achievement so far: “Making the one-day side and being able to play cricket at international level.”
Best friends in cricket: Stuart Matsikenyeri, Hamilton Masakadza, Tatenda Taibu, my brothers.
Other qualifications: Studying A-levels.
Other sports: First-team hockey at St John’s and first-team soccer at Vainona.
Outside interests: “I like reading cricket magazines or any other sporting magazines.”

Journalist says Harry Winks ideal for Aston Villa

Luke Hatfield from The Express and Star reckons Harry Winks is exactly the type of player Aston Villa are looking to add to their squad.

Dean Smith has already signed Emiliano Buendia from Norwich for a club-record fee, and along with Winks has been linked with Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe and Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse.

12 months ago, Villa added Premier League based players in Emiliano Martinez and Ross Barkley, who both helped Smith’s team achieve an 11th-place finish, whilst Ollie Watkins impressed, too.

Villa could lose star man and skipper Jack Grealish to Manchester City, which would raise around £100m for Smith to reinvest in his squad, and Winks is another that has been linked to Villa Park.

The Tottenham midfielder has made 109 Premier League appearances since coming through the ranks but slipped down the pecking order in north London last term and is desperate to be playing more regular football moving forward.

Asked whether Smith means business this summer, Hatfield told The Transfer Tavern:

“Him and those higher up have seen an opportunity in the fact they’ve improved so much. Last season they put in some great performances.

“Harry Winks hasn’t had the last season or two that he would have wanted, but it strikes away at Villa that those are the signings they’re trying to make – young, Premier League experience, they really want to add those kinds of players to their side.”

Felipe Melo nega desrespeito a rival: 'Não sabe brincar, sai do play'

Então a gente respeita o Santos, a torcida do Santos, a Vila Belmiro.

Swansea handed Woodman transfer boost

Swansea City have been handed a boost to their chances of bringing Freddie Woodman back to the Liberty Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football Insider, who claim that the Newcastle United goalkeeper was the subject of a bid by Premier League side Leeds United, thought to initially be a loan deal with an option to purchase the 24-year-old at a later date.

However, the report goes on to state that Woodman has rejected the advances of Marcelo Bielsa’s side, as the former England U21 international does not want to play second-fiddle to the Whites’ first-choice shot-stopper Illan Meslier.

It has previously been reported that Swansea are once again keen to secure a deal for Woodman in the summer transfer window, with Newcastle thought to be willing to accept an offer of around £10m for the U17 World Cup winner.

Cooper surely buzzing

With the latest development proving that Woodman is extremely keen to play regular first-team football next season, something that it would be difficult to find at a Premier League club this summer, Swansea appear to have just received a rather huge boost to their chances of resigning the highly-rated ‘keeper ahead of next season.

Indeed, it is easy to see why the Swans are so eager for Woodman to return to the Liberty Stadium, as the 24-year-old highly impressed over his two seasons on loan with the Welsh side.

Over his 43 Championship appearances in his debut season with the club back in 2019/20, the £9m-rated man helped his side keep 12 clean sheets and stopped three out of the five penalties he faced, as well as making an average of 2.6 saves per game – earning a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.89.

The ‘keeper then improved on his previous returns over 45 Championship appearances in Swansea’s 2020/21 campaign, keeping a whopping 20 clean sheets and making an average of 2.2 saves per league fixture.

These returns saw the man Lee Clarke dubbed an “unbelievable” player earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.92, ranking him as Cooper’s 12th-best performer in the second tier of English football, playing a key role in the club’s run all the way to the play-off final.

As such, should Swansea manage to secure the services of Woodman once again this summer, be it on a permanent or a temporary basis, it would undoubtedly be a huge boost to the club’s promotion hopes next season, as well as being a transfer that would leave Cooper rather understandably buzzing.

West Australians reap rewards

As they prepared to return to the field for Victoria’s second innings here today at the MCG, captain Simon Katich and his West Australian team-mates sensed they were more than a lazy chance.

Roger Vaughan03-Mar-2002As they prepared to return to the field for Victoria’s second innings here today at the MCG, captain Simon Katich and his West Australian team-mates sensed they were more than a lazy chance. They had looked shot on 2-16 at the end of day two and then 3-39 early on day three, but the Warriors grimly persisted yesterday and wiped off the first-innings deficit of 275.Having recovered from the follow-on, they now had a lead of 135 on the back of Marcus North’s unbeaten 200 and they knew something special might be about tohappen.”The feeling in the room before we went out, there was a lot of belief we could win it, particularly if we could get early wickets,” Katich said. Two balls into the innings, WA reaped the benefits of research – the leg-slip trap set for opener Matthew Mott worked and Victoria was one for none and theWarriors had their backs up.A few balls later, three WA fieldsmen chased the same ball to the boundary, such was their desperation.Such enthusiasm led to one of the greatest comebacks in domestic first-class history, a 37-run win which took WA to second spot on the Pura Cup ladder. The match could prove the defining moment of its season, although if Tasmania beats South Australia outright in Adelaide tomorrow, the Tigers will be in the box seat to play Queensland in the final.Katich admitted luck played its part in this match.North should have been stumped yesterday on 55 and Brad Williams ran out Ian Harvey on the tea break with a direct hit from fine leg.But there was also a lot of hard work, especially from North and Williams. They are former Victorians – North moved west as a child and Willliams transferred to WA after starting his first-class career under a navy-blue cap.Katich said North’s maiden first-class ton earlier this year, against Queensland in Perth, gave him the confidence he needed at this level.”He’s a very good player … when he first came into the side, a lot of guys who’d been playing for a while felt he was going to be someone who would really step up for us, would do a job in the first two or three years.”(It’s) not only with the bat; he’s also proved vital with the ball.”Williams always wants to do well against his old state and he would have been dirty with his dismissal late in the second innings today – a big swipe that had him bowled for a duck.Katich was careful not to criticise Williams when he returned to the rooms, knowing the real work for the paceman today lay ahead.”At the end of the day, you can’t really have a go at guys because they’re trying,” Katich said.”They don’t mean to get out, we were disappointed to see him get out, but that’s the way he plays.”We let him do his business with the ball and you don’t want to put blokes off-side, he had a crucial role with the ball to play.”Williams finished with 4-37, while Matthew Nicholson was on a hat-trick and returned 3-13, including the last wicket of the match.

Southampton: Les Reed drops "heartbreaking" Ings exit claim

Danny Ings has reignited his career at Southampton but that form has seen him attract interest from some of the Premier League’s top clubs, and if he was to depart former Saints vice-chairman Les Reed believes the striker would be heartbroken to leave the south coast.

The former Liverpool striker joined Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side in 2018 initially on loan and he has managed to find the net 46 times in 100 appearances, which has seen the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City linked with the 28-year old.

A lot of clubs will be on the hunt for a striker this summer and with Ings entering the final year of his current deal, the Saints may feel like they have their hands tied and have to sell him to bring money into the club.

Ings appears to have found his feet and best form at Southampton after struggling to ever get going at Liverpool due to numerous injurie,s and Reed believes that if Ings left he would find it tough, as he explained exclusively to Transfer Tavern:

“For Danny, there could be opportunities that open up in the last year of his contract and it will be heartbreaking for him to move but this is the time if he’s going to win a medal or achieve something bigger.”

Man City were credited with an interest in Ings earlier this year but now that Sergio Aguero has officially left they may step up their interest in the striker, especially if the likes of Harry Kane and Erling Haaland prove to be too expensive.

Ings is likely to have a lot of potential suitors both this summer and next year as teams up and down the Premier League will want someone who knows where the back of the net is.

MCFC fans want to sign Kamara

Manchester City fans are delighted after they were linked with a move for Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara.

With the Premier League and League Cup wrapped up and just the Champions League final left to play this campaign, the Citizens will have already begun preparations for the new season. That will ultimately mean new signings, and Pep Guardiola will be eager to add fresh impetus to his squad.

With Fernandinho approaching the end of his career, a new midfielder would not go amiss. According to FR Blue Moon, City are interested in Marseille midfielder Kamara. Currently valued at £33.3m (Transfermarkt), he made 35 appearances for the club in Ligue 1 and actually played against City in the Champions League earlier this term, although his side were twice on the losing end.

The news was shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the City supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Crystal Palace: Eagles on verge of appointing Nuno Espirito Santo

Crystal Palace are on the verge of appointing former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Nuno Espirito Santo, according to The Telegraph’s John Percy.

The Lowdown: Palace managerial search nears an end

Following the departure of boyhood Eagles fan Roy Hodgson [Independent], the Eagles have been searching for a manager to reshape the squad ahead of 2021/22.

After prominent links to former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, alongside Swansea City head coach Steve Cooper, Palace have turned their attention firmly towards Nuno as the favoured candidate for the role and look set to appoint the Portuguese native [The Telegraph].

The Latest: Deal could be completed this week

Having also been in talks with Everton in recent weeks, the 47-year-old now finally looks set to put pen to paper in South-East London shortly.

Talks are said to be progressing nicely over a deal, with an official announcement being mooted for later this week.

The reliable Percy, backing up his report on Twitter, said: “Nuno Espirito Santo is in advanced talks with CPFC and an appointment is close. Emerging as Palace’s No. 1 target.”

The Verdict: Nuno the correct fit at Selhurst Park

Espirito Santo would be seen as a coup for the Selhurst Park faithful, having achieved an impressive 187 wins within his managerial career [Transfermarkt], boasting 1.68 points-per-match while at Wolves.

He took the Wanderers to a Sky Bet Championship title, consecutive 7th place Premier League finishes and a UEFA Europa League quarter-final during his time at Molineux [Sky Sports], so his arrival would surely be well received by everyone connected with Crystal Palace.

Needing to start a rebuilding process imminently, having someone with experience in the top flight may have been near the top of the Eagles’ agenda.

Should the São Tomé born boss use his links with super agent Jorge Mendes to lead a successful rebuild, the Crystal Palace support will have some exciting times on the horizon.

In other news, Crystal Palace have released a former £9 million striker.
