Out: Alok Kapali, Naeem Islam, Rubel Hossain, Shahriar Nafees

Mushfiqur Rahim has been retained as Bangladesh captain for the Asia Cup, starting March 11 in Mirpur*. This comes a day after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced a 14-member squad for the tournament. The demotion of opening batsman Tamim Iqbal to the reserves and the inclusion of allrounder Mashrafe Mortaza are among a host of changes in the squad. Bangladesh’s selectors have dropped four of the 15 players who were part of the home ODI series against Pakistan in December 2011, demoted two to reserve status, and called up five. They also continued to not pick Mohammad Ashraful. The chief selector Akram Khan, however, said that dropping Tamim was not the panel’s decision but that of the Bangladesh Cricket Board president Mustafa Kamal. “Tamim Iqbal was dropped by Mustafa Kamal,” he told . “He was in the team that we submitted [for approval].”The selectors had received favourable fitness reports on both Mortaza and Tamim ahead of their meeting to pick the Asia Cup squad. Mortaza had led Dhaka Gladiators to victory in the inaugural season of the BPL, but Tamim played only two games for Chittagong Kings because of a groin injury. The five players called up to the squad were batsman Nazimuddin, wicketkeeper batsmen Jahurul Islam and Anamul Haque, Mortaza, and fast bowler Shahadat Hossain. Anamul, 19, is the only uncapped player in the squad.Alok Kapali and Shahriar Nafees, allrounder Naeem Islam and medium-pacer Rubel Hossain were dropped from the squad that played Pakistan. Tamim and medium-pace allrounder Farhad Reza, who were also part of the Pakistan series, were among the reserves for the Asia Cup.*March 6,14.30 GMT – This story was amended when the BCB announced that Mushfiqur had been named captain

Luan abriu o placar para o Tricolor gaúcho ainda no primeiro tempo e o jovem Lincoln, no último lance, deixou tudo igual: 1 a 1.

LEI DO EX INDIRETA?

A PRIMEIRA VEZ

LINCOLN BRILHA NO FIM

Guptill ton takes Auckland to thrilling win

Scorecard
Auckland prevailed over Canterbury in a thrilling high-scoring encounter at the Mainpower Oval in Rangiora, thanks to an unbeaten century from Martin Guptill, who smashed eight sixes in his 120. Guptill almost single-handedly guided his team during its chase of 184. Auckland lost two wickets inside the first three overs in the chase but Guptill kept the game on from one end.Though Auckland lost wickets at regular intervals, the batsmen who followed chipped in long enough to support Guptill. Anaru Kitchen, Gareth Hopkins and Colin Munro gave Guptill company in important partnerships, and Ronnie Hira helped finish the game off. With 10 needed off the final over, Auckland managed nine off the first five balls. Hira swung the final delivery, Andrew Ellis, for six to seal victory.Canterbury’s score of 183 centered on three knocks, of 41, 45 and 42 from George Worker, captain Peter Fulton and Dean Brownlie respectively. They were 163 for 9 at one stage after a collapse where they lost 7 for 63, but No.11 Mitchell Claydon took them to 183.

Srikkanth says fatigue not an issue

Chief selector Kris Srikkanth has blamed India’s collective batting failure for their poor performances, and said it had nothing to do with fatigue or poor preparation in the lead-up to the series

Kris Srikkanth says the failure of India’s batsmen to click as a unit has been one of the reasons for the defeat•Getty Images

Kris Srikkanth, India’s chief selector, has blamed the collective batting failure for series defeat in England, and said the loss had nothing to do with fatigue or poor preparation.”If you see the FTP, all countries are playing cricket 365 days a year whether England or Australia,” Srikkanth said. “It is not the Indians only. The fact is that cricket is being played the whole year in whatever format – Test, ODI or Twenty20. So I don’t think that it is the fatigue factor for the performance in England.”However in the last 12 months India have played more Tests than any other team and more one-day games than anyone except Pakistan. In addition to 14 Tests and 29 ODIs over the past year, India’s players also took part in the gruelling IPL, which began within a week of the World Cup final. In the first three Tests this series, India have not managed to post a total in excess of 300, and Rahul Dravid is the only batsman to have averaged more than 40. Srikkanth said the batting had failed to perform as a unit. “The batting did not click for us. In the Indian side, if batting clicks everything clicks. We also did not do well in bowling and fielding. England bowling attack is ideally suited for the conditions.”It is a fact that our top five batsmen have not clicked in the series so far. But the same bunch of cricketers have been doing well during the last couple of years. The same combination had defeated South Africa in South Africa. It our bad luck that in this particular tour nothing has clicked for us.”India had England struggling at 124 for 8 in the first innings at Trent Bridge, but a ninth-wicket 74-run partnership between Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann played a crucial role in England getting to 221. Srikkanth said India’s failure to capitalise on the opportunity was one of the key turning points in the series. “It is a question of mental toughness and our cricketers are mentally very tough … [but] at 124 for 8, if you look at it psychologically … psychologically there we lost the battle,” he told .The BCCI has been criticised by former cricketers for its failure to prioritise Test cricket, but Srikkanth defended the Indian board. “Let us not indulge in the blame game – on the players or the administrators or the BCCI. Nobody is to be blamed and it’s not the time for that. It is just that we are going through a bad phase.”England have replaced India at the top of the Test rankings, but while Srikkanth was confident India would be able to bounce back, he said it was time to rebuild the team. “We have to learn from the series in England, look into what went wrong. We also have to identify and support new talent when the time comes,” he said.”We all have to put our heads together and plan for the future,” Srikkanth told the . “We have to start the process all over again without complaining. We have to try our various combinations to get the best team like we did before the World Cup. We even dropped Yuvraj Singh, who came back strongly into the ODI team and left a huge impact on the tournament. We want to do similar things now.”

O clássico será realizado no Nilton Santos.

Wagner routs Wellington

Left-arm fast bowler Neil Wagner’s record-breaking spell helped Otago rout Wellington by an innings and 138 runs in three days at the Queenstown Events Centre.Wellington, who ended the second day on 57 for 1, looked in relative comfort on 112 for 1 in pursuit of Otago’s first innings total of 441, before Harry Boam, Grant Elliott and Neal Parlane fell in quick succession. At 136 for 4 with opener Stewart Rhodes looking solid on 77, Wellington would still have hoped to put up a competitive total. However, they hadn’t bargained for South African born Wagner’s searing spell.Wagner, bowling the last over before lunch, had Rhodes caught by Neil Broom off the first ball of the over. He then bowled Justin Austin-Smellie and Jeetan Patel off the next two deliveries to register his hat-trick and followed up that with the wicket of Ili Tugaga to make it four in four. No. 10 Mark Gillespie survived the fifth ball, only to get bowled off the final ball off the over. Wagner’s performance eclipsed the previous best performance in an over by a bowler in New Zealand which was in 1929-30 when Englishman Maurice Allom took four wickets in five balls against New Zealand at Lancaster Park in Christchurch. Wagner returned after lunch to bowl the last batsman Andy McKay to end up with career-best figures of 6 for 36 as Wellington collapsed to 148 all out.Following on, Wellington’s batting stuttered yet again as they lost their first three wickets, including that of Rhodes, with just 16 runs on the board. Elliott resisted with 61, but failed to receive support from the other frontline batsmen. Gillespie and McKay added 39 runs for the last wicket, but that only delayed the inevitable as Wellington were bowled out for 155 to hand Otago a convincing win. Wagner was among the wickets again, accounting for Elliott, Patel and Tugaga to end up with match figures of 9 for 66.
