Red Sox Announcer Takes Shot at Astros’ Sign Stealing History After Benches Clear

Tensions were high between the Red Sox and Astros at Fenway Park Saturday.

Benches and bullpens cleared after the seventh inning because Astros relief pitcher Hector Neris thought Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story was stealing signs as he stood on second base. Neris intentionally balked Story to third so he could get off second base and presumably stop looking at his grip and communicating to the plate.

Once the inning ended, Neris had some words for Red Sox third base coach Kyle Hudson as both teams headed to their respective dugouts which caused benches to clear. The skirmish deescalated from there with an umpire holding back Neris and both sides quickly moving on.

That didn't stop current NESN analyst and former Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks from taking a nicely-timed shot at the Astros for their history with sign stealing.

"Imagine the Astros being mad about stealing signs," Middlebrooks said on the Boston broadcast. "But guess what? That's part of the game when you can see the grip in a glove."

The Astros were disciplined by the league for illegally using a video camera system to steal signs during games in 2017 and '18. They won the World Series in '17 and were stripped of their first- and second-round picks in '20 and '21 as part of the sanctions. The league suspended general manager Jeff Luhnow and team manager A.J. Hinch for the '20 season for failing to prevent the violations before the two were fired after the punishment was announced.

Of course, the Astros are completely turned over from that time and as another interesting wrinkle, current Red Sox manager Alex Cora was the Astros' bench coach during the '17 season. But it was certainly a fair shot from Middlebrooks because any time sign stealing comes up, you can't help but think of the Astros' scandal.

Fired Nationals GM to Buy Fans Beer Before Home Run Derby As Parting Gift

Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo's Sunday firing was not your average executive dismissal.

When they let Rizzo go, the Nationals bid adieu to a figure who had seen almost the entire history of the franchise in D.C.. Washington hired Rizzo before the 2007 season, the team's third after its relocation from Montreal. Several former Montreal Expos and Expos draftees were on the roster at that point.

Gradually, Rizzo helped turn the Nationals into winners and—in 2019—world champions. Perhaps for this reason, the former general manager is giving back to the fans in an unusual way.

"As a way to say thank you to the fans for 19 amazing years with the Washington Nationals, grab a 'Round on Riz' Monday, July 14 before the Home Run Derby at Penn Quarter Sports Tavern or Walter’s Sports Bar," Rizzo said on Instagram through his foundation, referencing two local sports bars. "First round of beer is on us from 5-7 pm. Cheers to an incredible ride!"

Nationals left fielder and designated hitter James Wood will compete in the event in the midst of a stellar season. He will be the first Washington player in the Derby since right fielder Juan Soto in 2022.

Now, thanks to Rizzo, Nationals fans have two economically friendly places to watch their budding star work.

Amorim loves him: Man Utd now readying January offer to sign £50m+ midfielder

With Ruben Amorim set to keep hold of his job at Old Trafford, Manchester United are reportedly preparing a January offer to sign a midfield star who he loves.

Ratcliffe defends making Man Utd staff cuts

After revealing that he’s willing to give Amorim as long as three years to make his mark at Man United, INEOS chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe has defended his decision to make a number of staff cuts earlier this year. The British billionaire insisted that profitability is key to any success and used United’s recent record revenue as an example.

Alas, even as results begin to improve off the pitch, they’ve remained woeful on the pitch. Amorim’s side have won just twice in seven Premier League games and are yet to even win back-to-back league games under the former Sporting Club manager.

Alarm bells have been ringing all season, but Amorim maintains the faith of INEOS. In fact, instead of sacking the manager, the minority owners are reportedly prepared to back him in the transfer market once again and could even welcome a midfielder that he loves in 2026.

Man Utd preparing Hjulmand offer

According to reports in Spain, Man United are now preparing a €60m (£52m) offer to sign Morten Hjulmand from Sporting Club. The Denmark midfielder thrived under Amorim at Sporting and could now become the first player from his former side to complete a move to Old Trafford in 2026.

Amorim has never shied away from praising the 26-year-old, either. The Man United boss told reporters after his final game in charge of Sporting, in which Hjulmand scored in a 4-2 victory: “It was a great goal by a fantastic player and captain who arrived at Sporting a year ago.”

The leader that the Red Devils are arguably lacking, Hjulmand would slot straight into Amorim’s midfield next to Manuel Ugarte – allowing Bruno Fernandes to move back to an advanced role in the process.

When compared, it’s the Dane’s defensive traits that stand out and those traits would allow one of the best midfielders in the world to play in his best role under Amorim. If United can secure his signature for just £52m, then Hjulmand would simply be a no-brainer.

Forget Bruno: Man Utd have found the next McTominay in "world-class" star

Bruno Fernandes has for so long been Manchester United’s shining light, often being the man to get themselves out of trouble during the Ruben Amorim tenure.

The Red Devils may have finished in 15th place last campaign, but it didn’t stop the Portuguese international from ending 2024/25 with a total of 37 combined goals and assists.

However, the £200m spending spree during the recent summer window has seen some of the responsibility taken off his shoulders – as seen by the goals scored by Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo against Brighton.

As a result, the 31-year-old has since dropped into a slightly deeper midfield role, resulting in Bruno only registering two goals and one assist from his first nine Premier League outings in 2025/26.

Amorim could be utilising the club captain in such a role to try and bridge the gap to one player who has prematurely offloaded during the tenure of the previous management team.

Man Utd’s mammoth mistake in selling McTominay

To combat their heavy spending in recent years, the United hierarchy have had to offload numerous players from their books to prevent any financial problems.

Midfielder Scott McTominay was one of the players sacrificed by the board, with the Scottish international leaving in a £25m deal to join Napoli in the summer of 2024.

Such a deal was seen as excellent business at the time, with the midfielder often receiving a fair amount of criticism from the supporters over his displays at Old Trafford.

However, he’s taken his career to the next level in Naples, thriving under Antonio Conte’s guidance in 2024/25 as the Italian outfit claimed the Serie A title.

The 28-year-old scored 12 times and registered four assists in Italy’s top-flight, subsequently winning the division’s MVP award, whilst also being nominated for the Balon d’Or.

The former Red Devil has continued his phenomenal form into the current campaign, with his sensational strike against Inter Milan on Saturday securing the club all three points.

His £25m departure now appears to be a huge mistake, but Amorim shouldn’t be worried with the manager already stumbling upon his next version of the Scotsman.

The United star who’s becoming their next McTominay

Whilst Bruno has largely operated in the role vacated by McTominay, numerous other talents have also shared the responsibility at the heart of the United side.

Manuel Ugarte joined a £50m transfer from PSG last summer, with the hierarchy seeing him as the perfect player to fill the void left by the departing academy star.

However, the Uruguayan has subsequently fallen way below the expectations of the fanbase, with Amorim only starting two of the club’s nine Premier League outings in 2025/26.

Kobbie Mainoo was a first-team mainstay before the 40-year-old’s arrival last year, but like Ugarte, he’s found minutes extremely hard to come by within the starting eleven.

The Englishman has failed to start a single game and only appeared for a total of 138 minutes off the bench in England’s top-flight during the current campaign.

The aforementioned duo’s lack of impact is largely due to the performances of Casemiro, with the Brazilian international nailing down a starting role to the surprise of many.

He’s previously been slated by numerous figures over the years, with Jamie Carragher infamously stating ‘the football has left him’ and that he needs to move to Saudi Arabia.

Such a situation is similar to that of McTominay, with the former United star taking his career to unimaginable heights after his own switch out of Manchester.

However, Casemiro has managed to turn his Red Devils career around in recent months and subsequently shut up a lot of his doubters along the way in the process.

The “world-class” star, as dubbed by Gus Poyet, has started seven times in the Premier League this year, registering two goals and an assist within his recent outings.

His latest showing against Brighton was arguably his best of 2025/26, scoring once and teeing up compatriot Cunha for his goal for the Red Devils.

Casemiro’s underlying stats further showcase how impressive he was against the Seagulls, with the 33-year-old having a huge effect at both ends of the football field.

Tallies such as three tackles and five recoveries made highlight his importance without the ball – arguably being the perfect all-round option at the heart of the side to allow Bruno to express himself in attacking areas.

Such a turnaround in form is huge credit to the experienced midfielder, with his recent outings making him one of the club’s most important players at present.

His partnership with Bruno has allowed for the recent impressive form – potentially saving Amorim’s job and allowing him to reach new heights in his tenure.

Who is Singing the National Anthems at the 2025 World Series?

The 2025 World Series is underway with the Dodgers and Blue Jays competing for baseball's biggest prize.

The Blue Jays took the first game of the series at Rogers Centre, thanks to Addison Barger's thrilling grand slam that blew a previously tied contest wide open. Toronto ended up beating the series favorites, 11-4.

But the Dodgers snatched one back to even the series in Game 2's 5-1 win, aided by Yoshinobu Yamamoto's complete game. The Dodgers ace became the first pitcher to achieve that feat in the Fall Classic since 2015.

The Dodgers jumped ahead to a 2-1 series lead after winning Game 3's 18-inning marathon thriller, but then dropped the next two contests to the Blue Jays, who have looked and played like the better team in Games 4 and 5. Toronto is now just one win away from clinching their first World Series title since their repeat championship in '93.

Game 6 is Friday night at Rogers Centre.

Prior to these games, it's customary for a chosen singer to perform the U.S. and Canadian national anthems in honor of each MLB team. Here is a list of the national anthem singers who are scheduled to take the stage for each game of the 2025 World Series.

MLB Rookie Watch: Drake Baldwin Is Almost Ready to Claim Some Hardware

Sometimes, handicapping the American and National League Rookie of the Year races is about being flexible—feeling out who's hot at any particular moment over the course of a long season.

However, sometimes, the art of assessment requires patience. Throughout the year, Braves catcher Drake Baldwin has bobbed up and down the NL pecking order. He’s been prone to weekly foibles, but all along he’s slashed .280/.352/.457 with 15 home runs, 62 RBIs and 2.6 bWAR in what could plausibly be described as part-time duty, and he’s now pushed past Sean Murphy to claim the lion’s share of the starts behind the plate in Atlanta.

While his season-long excellence should result in him being named NL Rookie of the Year, there are a few other players peaking at the right time to prevent it from being a certainty. This week's six contenders feature some faces that are familiar, some returning, some new. Welcome to the latest edition of MLB Rookie Watch.

American League1. Nick Kurtz, first baseman, Athletics

Kurtz is controlling essentially every variable in this race he can control in one of the great rookie seasons of the 21st century. He leads all AL rookies in bWAR and win probability added, and his 4.7 bWAR extrapolates to 8.0 over a 162-game season. Since the last Rookie Watch column a month ago in which we acknowledged Kurtz as the new AL favorite, Kurtz has run away with the distinction by slashing .324/.474/.568, making his own luck with an astounding .465 BABIP (2026 regression seems likely, but that's another column). An oblique injury that cost him three recent games appears to be resolved.

2. Roman Anthony, outfielder, Red Sox

The Roman Empire was more of a Roman Republic to start the season; as recently as July 2 he was sitting on a .200/.309/.329 slash line. However, it's been ever since—Anthony's last 25 games include a .306/.389/.520 clip to go with six home runs and 13 RBIs. On the first day of that span, Anthony signed a lucrative contract extension, and he has earned every penny, even as a lengthy injured list trip looms and threatens to end his regular season. How many rookies can make an 8.7-bWAR player a year ago expandable?

3. Noah Cameron, pitcher, Royals

His last start of August was a nightmare—six earned runs allowed on eight hits in five innings as the White Sox shut his Royals out 7–0 on Aug. 25. Still, no other AL rookie starter can touch him. Any team would take his numbers extrapolated over a full season—13-11 with a 2.92 ERA and 149 strikeouts. With Kansas City in a tight wild-card race, he’ll have opportunities to affect winning down the stretch.

Honorable Mention

Jacob Wilson, shortstop, Athletics; Mike Vasil, pitcher, White Sox

National League1. Drake Baldwin, catcher, Braves

On the strength of an uber-consistent 21-game stretch, Baldwin replaces stagnating Brewers infielder Caleb Durbin (.296 OBP in his last 30 games). Baldwin recovered from a mediocre July to post an .800 OPS in August, highlighted by an Aug. 7 showing against the Marlins in which he went 3-for-5 with two homers and five RBIs. If Atlanta takes the training wheels off in September—as many losing teams do for their youngsters—it’s Baldwin’s award to lose.

2. Isaac Collins, left fielder, Brewers

With Durbin cooling, Collins’s production this year has become undeniable even amid a below-average stretch for him. The versatile Creighton product is slashing .276/.373/.426 with eight home runs and 51 RBIs for a team still in possession of the best record in baseball. For the week ending Aug. 10, he was named the NL Player of the Week, flummoxing Braves and Mets pitchers with a .429/.538/.905 hot streak. Not bad for a Rule 5 draft pick Rockies fans are kicking themselves for seeing get away.

3. Cade Horton, pitcher, Cubs

The Cubs are blessed with two intriguing rookies in Horton and third baseman Matt Shaw, so let’s compare the two. Shaw has twice as many bWAR as Horton (2.8 against 1.4), but Horton has Shaw beaten in fWAR (1.7 to 1.2). OPS+ (102) and wRC+ (95) have Shaw as about a league-average hitter, but ERA+ (137) has Horton as a well-above-average hurler. We’ll give the last slot to Horton (9–4, 2.78 ERA), whose unique position as a pitcher among the NL ROY contenders could give him a leg up if he dominates in his September outings—the 2022 first-round pick got off to a good start Wednesday by holding the Braves hitless over five innings.

Honorable Mention

Matt Shaw, third baseman, Cubs; Braxton Ashcraft, pitcher, Pirates
