Mary Earps unable to accept Lionesses' offer of Wembley tribute following international retirement

Former England goalkeeper Mary Earps has been unable to accept a Lionesses send-off at Wembley next month after calling time on her international career in the weeks leading up to Euro 2025 in the summer. The Paris Saint-Germain stopper, who has become a superstar of the women's game in recent years and even transcends her sport, remains in talks about what a tribute might look like.

  • Earps says no to tribute at Wembley

The FA extended an invite for Earps to be honoured at the national stadium on November 29, when England are due to face China in a friendly match, the penultimate game of 2025 and the first at Wembley since before the European Championship – as it goes, Earps had announced her international retirement just three days before that game against Portugal.

That invite came after she was "promised" a send-off to mark an era-defining England career when she called time. However, the date in question – which is England's only scheduled game at Wembley at the moment – doesn't work for Earps. Talks remain ongoing between the FA, Earps and her representatives as all parties strive to find a suitable date to honour her achievements as a Lioness.

Earps: A career to be remembered

Earps was a veteran of the domestic women's game in England for years before establishing herself as an international starter. She had played her way into the Lionesses squad while at Reading in 2017, but went to the 2019 World Cup as third choice behind Karen Bardsley and Carly Telford after playing precious little football during a disappointing season at Wolfsburg.

That coincided with falling out of England contention altogether. But a move to newly promoted Manchester United in 2019, working closely with influential coach and mentor Ian Willcock, saw Earps rise once more, completely dedicated to her craft and ultimately reaching new heights.

Sarina Wiegman saw fit to name her No.1 upon taking charge in the autumn of 2021 and Earps repaid that faith with exceptional performances en-route to winning Euro 2022. Dancing on the desk in the press conference after that final endeared her to the masses suddenly discovering women’s football, followed by a Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper award, her starring role as the Lionesses reached and narrowly lost the 2023 World Cup final, and a second FIFA gong.

Earps, who retired with 53 caps to her name but was criticised for the timing of it after already losing her starting place to Hannah Hampton, also made a difference off the pitch, publicly fighting Nike in 2023 after replicas of her England goalkeeper jersey initially weren't made available for fans to buy.

  • Surprise FIFPro World XI nomination

Earps left Manchester United in the summer of 2024, running down her contract and suggesting that, beyond her 30th birthday, she didn't have time to wait for a squad rebuild to run its course if she was to realise ambitions of winning regular major silverware. A move to Paris Saint-Germain followed, but so too did swift Champions League elimination, and to a degree falling out of the English media's spotlight. Hampton's emergence as a very credible successor and Earps no longer performing at her 2022 and 2023 peak perhaps accelerated her decision to retire internationally.

All of that made it surprising for fans to then see her name on the list of players nominated this week for 2025's FIFPro World XI, chosen by players from all over the world but questionably ahead of arguably more deserving but less high profile individuals like Phallon Tullis-Joyce, Cata Coll and Chiamka Nnadozie.

    Earps' autobiography is released

is the tagline that adorns the cover of Earps' imminent autobiography, titled set for release on Thursday, October 30.

The latter part of the title is a reference to the moving acceptance speech she gave upon collecting her Best FIFA Women's Goalkeeper award in 2022. That use of the term 'unapologetically' has also previously influenced the design of a clothing line under her brand MAE27, and has become a kind of personal buzzword synonymous with Earps and her journey.

The 2025 edition of the women’s ODI World Cup will be played from September 30 to November 2 in Bengaluru, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam and Indore in India, with Colombo in Sri Lanka as a neutral venue.Though the full schedule is yet to be released by the ICC, it’s likely that all of Pakistan’s league games will be in Colombo based on the hybrid model agreed upon by the BCCI and the PCB earlier this year. The need for this arrangement arose due to strained relations between the two countries and India playing their 2025 Champions Trophy matches in Dubai instead of in the host country, Pakistan. The PCB in turn said Pakistan would not travel to India for tournaments in the foreseeable future. The women’s ODI World Cup opener involving India will be played in Bengaluru, which will also host the second semi-final on October 30. The first semi-final will be played in Guwahati or Colombo, depending on whether Pakistan qualify. The final on November 2 will be held in either Bengaluru or Colombo for the same reason.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

New Chandigarh, which was earlier in the running to host matches, including the final, has been dropped from the list of venues. ESPNcricinfo understands that the BCCI received internal feedback raising concerns over India potentially playing a final at a venue where they haven’t played a single international fixture.Bengaluru, in contrast, has regularly hosted games and has attracted strong crowds for international matches as well as the Women’s Premier League.India are hosting the women’s ODI World Cup for the first time since 2013. They also hosted the women’s T20 World Cup in 2016. The format for the 2025 tournament will be the same as in 2022, with each of the eight teams playing the other in a round-robin format, with the top four making the semi-finals. A total of 31 matches will be played.Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka, apart from hosts India, qualified directly for the tournament. The last two spots were taken by Pakistan and Bangladesh at the qualifiers in Lahore earlier this year. The tournament will not feature West Indies, who missed out to Bangladesh on net run-rate at the qualifier. The Oval and Lord’s to host 2026 women’s T20 WC semis and finalThe 2026 women’s T20 World Cup in England will begin on June 12 at Edgbaston and end on July 5, with the final at Lord’s. The semi-finals will be played at The Oval on June 30 and July 2.The tournament will include 12 teams, more than any previous edition, and up from ten last time. It comprises 33 matches in 24 days at seven venues, the other four being Manchester, Leeds, Southampton and Bristol.England, Australia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies and defending champions New Zealand have already qualified for the World Cup. The remaining four teams will be decided at a qualifying tournament next year.

Wyatt-Hodge leads way as Surrey pinch rain-affected contest

Lancashire struggle to 85 for 6 in 11-over innings before visitors themselves get ahead on DLS

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay07-Jun-2025Surrey gained revenge for last month’s County T20 Cup final defeat to Lancashire Thunder as they won a weather-shortened Vitality Blast clash at Emirates Old Trafford by two runs on Duckworth-Lewis-Stern.In an 11-overs per side game, visiting spinners Kalea Moore and Tilly Corteen-Coleman struck twice apiece to restrict Lancashire to 85 for 6 following a 3.15pm start due to rain. Fi Morris top-scored with 29 off 25 balls for the home side.Surrey’s third successive win at the start of this competition was then confirmed as, when rain returned at 62 for 4 after eight overs of their chase, they were ahead of the DLS target. At Taunton late last month, Thunder won the first title of the new county-led era of women’s professional cricket thanks to a 32-run success. But Thunder are under early pressure in the Blast having now lost three from four so far. After a two-and-a-quarter-hour delay here, Surrey, who elected to bowl, made the perfect start as Moore’s offspin had Tilly Kesteven stumped by Kira Chathli off the first ball of the match on a used pitch. In that aforementioned County Cup final, Kesteven had been named player-of-the-match following a superb 77 off 60 balls, her maiden senior fifty.Ryana MacDonald-Gay trapped her England team-mate Seren Smale lbw in the next over – 10 for 2 – to leave Thunder up against it early on.They reached 24 for 2 after 3.2 overs of powerplay. Morris and captain Ellie Threlkeld united to steady Lancashire’s ship through a mix of power and invention. Threlkeld drilled Dani Gregory’s legspin down the ground for four and Morris scooped Phoebe Franklin’s seam to the long-leg fence. They shared 50 for the third wicket before Threlkeld was bowled pulling at Gregory for 24 in the eighth over amidst the late and unsuccessful scramble for runs.Moore and wicketkeeper Chathli combined again for another stumping, this time Ailsa Lister departing, and Lancashire were never able to cut loose. When Corteen-Coleman’s left-arm spin bowled Morris and Danni Collins in the 10th over, the hosts were 75 for 6.Surrey’s chase started positively as captain Bryony Smith twice clubbed Grace Johnson’s seam down the ground for boundaries in the second over, taking the score to 17 without loss.Either side of that, Danni Wyatt-Hodge twice pierced the gap at deep midwicket off Sophie Morris’s spin, and at 34 without loss after 20 balls of powerplay Surrey were motoring. The loss of three wickets in 10 balls changed that. Smith skewed Tara Norris’s left-arm seam to point shortly afterwards, ending a 38-run opening partnership with Wyatt-Hodge, before Grace Harris got a leading edge to cover later in the fifth over. When Wyatt-Hodge, on 25, hoisted Darcey Carter’s off-spin to long-on in the next, Surrey were 46 for 3. Australian legspinner Alana King, on debut, then bowled Chathli – 53 for 4 in the seventh. With the rain now falling and the DLS equation tightening up, Paige Scholfield hit Carter for six over wide long-off to seal the win given the umpires took the players off four balls later. She finished 16 not out off 14 balls.

Payne the hero with bat and ball as Gloucestershire seal low-scorer

David Payne deployed all his considerable experience to propel Gloucestershire to a dramatic two-wicket victory over Hampshire Hawks in a low-scoring but memorable Vitality Blast contest at the Seat Unique Stadium.Chasing a modest 125 to win and buoyed by D’Arcy Short’s 41-ball 49, Gloucestershire were cruising at 112 for 4 in the 16th, only to then lose four wickets for the addition of 11 runs to set-up a nerve-jangling finale. With the scores level, Payne kept his composure to lift the final ball, bowled by Chris Wood, over long-on for an astonishing last-gasp match-winning six.The veteran left arm seamer had earlier claimed 3 for 20 from four overs to undermine Hampshire’s top-order and help restrict the visitors to 124 for 9 after they had been inserted on a characteristically slow Bristol pitch. Josh Shaw and Ben Charlesworth weighed in with two wickets apiece and Miles Hammond claimed a remarkable five catches as Gloucestershire picked up a second win in as many games to keep alive their outside hopes of making the quarter-finals.Without a win in their last five games, Hampshire missed an opportunity to move above Glamorgan and back into top-four contention.Looking to follow up his half-century made against Somerset 24 hours earlier, Hampshire skipper James Vince enjoyed a moment of good fortune before he had even got off the mark, being dropped by Graeme van Buuren at extra cover off the bowling of Payne. But there was no such escape for fellow opener Lhuan-dre Pretorius who was held on the deep square leg boundary by Short later in the same over as Gloucestershire effected an early breakthrough.Payne struck another telling blow in his next over, persuading Vince to sky a catch to Miles Hammond at mid-off and depart for 7 with the score 9 for 2. Toby Albert poached a trio of boundaries at the expense of Matt Taylor and Shaw to afford the innings much-needed impetus, but he was bowled by Payne for 16 off the final ball of a powerplay that yielded an underwhelming return of 29 for 3.If Hampshire were reliant upon overseas star Dewald Brevis, they were disappointed. Having taken slow left armer Tom Smith for a six and a four in the seventh, the South African chanced his arm once too often, aiming an extravagant pull shot at a shortish delivery from Charlesworth and succeeding only in finding deep midwicket. He had contributed 13 and the Hawks were 49 for 4 and under the pump. The middle order did not respond well to pressure, Joe Weatherley hoisting Charlesworth to deep midwicket for 18 and Eddie Jack served up a carbon copy dismissal in the next over, falling to van Buuren’s slow left arm without scoring as Hampshire lurched to 67 for 6. Shaw returned at the Ashley Down Road end to remove James Fuller for 17, superbly caught on the run by Ollie Price at long-on as Gloucestershire continued to turn the screw.Liam Dawson followed Fuller back to the pavilion soon afterwards, brilliant held by Hammond in the deep off the bowling of Matt Taylor, and when Benny Howell hit Shaw high to long-on and fell for 14, the Hawks were 100 for 9 in the eighteenth. A late flurry from the last wicket pair of Wood and Scott Currie, who added an unbeaten 24, was not sufficient to paper over the cracks.Hammond and Short staged a brisk opening stand of 30 in five overs to afford the reply reassuring momentum. Hampshire desperately needed to take early wickets and Jack yorked Hammond for 22, but Short continued to apply pressure, carting Wood for two sixes as the home side posted 46 for 1 in the powerplay.Although England spinner Dawson snared Cameron Bancroft lbw without scoring, it did little to slow West Country progress, Price joining Short in staging a partnership of 32 for the fourth wicket to bring the required rate down to a run a ball.Price contributed 22 before slapping a short ball from Wood to midwicket and Howell then accounted for Jack Taylor with the score 87 for 4 in the 14th. Short had accrued three fours and three sixes and had his sights set on what would have been a maiden 50 in Gloucestershire colours when he top-edged Fuller to short third. Hampshire made the home side work hard for their runs and Howell bowled Charlesworth in the penultimate over before Wood removed Matt Taylor and van Buuren in the last to set-up a tense finale.Shaw scrambled a single off the next ball to bring the scores level and Payne calmed any nerves by smiting the final ball over long-on for six to send the crowd into raptures.

Man Utd women's player ratings vs Aston Villa: Red Devils' unbeaten run comes to a halt as Ella Toone & Jess Park fall short in blow to WSL title hopes

Manchester United suffered their first defeat of the WSL season, falling 1-0 to a spirited Aston Villa side. The visitors broke the deadlock in the 35th minute, with Miri Taylor firing in from the edge of the box for her first goal as a professional. The Red Devils were uncharacteristically listless in attack as Mark Skinner's side failed to score for the first time in the 2025-26 season.

United entered the game as heavy favourites, sitting in third at the start of the day's play and the visitors winning just once in their first seven league games.

Villa frustrated the hosts in an uneventful first half. Taylor's strike came after the hosts failed to clear their lines from a corner. The Scottish midfielder managed to keep the bouncing ball down, driving the ball into the corner of Phallon Tullis-Joyce's net.

Ella Toone produced United's first shot on target shortly after the hour mark. Her scrambled effort was gallantly cleared off the line by a lunging Villa defender. Skinner's substitutions could do little to influence the game, with United failing to create a clear cut chance until Rachel Williams' header was comfortable stopped by Sabrina D'Angelo in the 85th minute.

GOAL rates Manchester United's players from the Leigh Sports Village.

Goalkeeper & Defence

Phallon Tullis-Joyce (5/10):

There was little she could to stop Taylor's effort as she was left unsighted by a sea of bodies from the uncleared corner. Dealt with Villa's otherwise tame efforts with minimal fuss.

Jayde Riviere (6/10):

Provided some attacking impetus, but her delivery was inconsistent.

Dominique Janssen (5/10):

Was caught high up the pitch on a couple of occasions. Bailed out by her centre back partner and the covering Miyazawa.

Maya Le Tissier (6/10):

Fierce battle with player of the match Kirsty Hanson. Stood up to the striker physically, and made some well timed recovery tackles.

Gabby George (4/10):

Failed to push on with any threat. Pulled in the 55th minute.

Hinata Miyazawa (6/10):

An outstanding covering tackle stopped Villa from extending their lead on the hour mark. Unable to dictate play in possession.

Lisa Naalsund (4/10):

Subbed before the hour mark. Another victim of Villa's compact defence.

Ella Toone (5/10):

Struggled to impact the game until her snatched chance in the box was cleared off the line.

Getty Images SportAttack

Jess Park (4/10):

Floated in and out of the game. Showed little sign of the attacking threat she has provided so far this season.

Fridolina Rolfo (4/10):

One jinking run in the first half resulted in a poor effort on her weaker foot. An anonymous performance otherwise. Pulled before the hour mark.

Elisabeth Terland (5/10):

Next to no service before getting the hook in the 55th minute. A frustrating afternoon.

Melvine Malard (6/10):

Provided a physical presence in the box that almost lead to a Toone goal. Her willing runs down the channel turned the Villa defence.

Anna Sandberg (6/10):

Retained possession well in the final third. Her floated cross for Williams could have set up the break through.

Leah Galton (5/10):

One headed effort screwed harmlessly wide. Little to talk about otherwise.

Julia Zigotti Olme (4/10):

Little to report. Tidy enough on the ball, but like many of her peers, provided no sustained attacking threat.

Rachel Williams (N/A):

Could have done better with her headed chance as time expired.

Mark Skinner (4/10):

His side looked a shadow of the attacking threat they have provided over the season to date. Some of the subs had an impact, but it wasn't enough to break down the visitors' low block.

Revealed: The bizarre reason why Lamine Yamal is now refusing to sign autographs for fans

Lamine Yamal’s life off the pitch is often a topic of discussion and now his decision to refuse autograph signings has hit the headlines alongside the bizarre reason why.

Lamine Yamal's life off the pitch

Yamal has the world at his feet.

He is undeniably the next in line for the same throne that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo left vacated. But at just 18 years old, La Masia’s latest generational talent hasn’t always found himself in the headlines for the right reasons away from the pitch.

In July, the Spaniard was investigated after reports claimed that he hired people with dwarfism to perform at his 18th birthday party. The winger reportedly hosted a party at a rented property in Olivella with guests, YouTubers, influencers and Barcelona teammates.

Following the reports, the Directorate General for People with Disabilities told BBC Sport: “These actions violate not only current legislation but also the fundamental ethical values of a society that seeks to be egalitarian and respectful.

“The general law on the rights of persons with disabilities expressly prohibits the following practices: ‘Shows or recreational activities in which people with disabilities or other circumstances are used to provoke mockery, ridicule, or derision from the public in a manner contrary to the respect due to human dignity are prohibited’.”

Living the party life whilst balancing his place as one of the world’s best wingers has historically not been an easy task for many players, but it is worth remembering just how young Yamal still is.

When asked about his life away from the pitch, Barcelona boss Hansi Flick said: “For me, what counts is that when he’s here, he puts in the effort and commitment. And that’s what he does. He had a few days off after working hard, and I don’t interfere in his private life.”

Why Yamal is refusing to sign autographs

As reported by Mundo Deportivo in Spain, Yamal is now refusing to sign autographs amid reports that he’s preparing to sign a lucrative commercial deal that will see his signature sold exclusively by a specialised merchandise company.

It’s a similar deal to one that basketball legend LeBron James has and one that has forced Yamal to explain to fans why he can’t sign their merchandise when meeting him.

The agreement is reportedly yet to be signed, but both parties are eager to get things over the line in an attempt to ensure that the value of the winger’s signature rises significantly.

In a modern game full of signs asking for shirts in the crowd and fans still clamoring for signatures, the move is almost certain to cause controversy.

For fans, it’s another reminder of the influence of money in the current state of European football, with fixtures heading abroad and now Yamal’s signature being locked behind a hefty deal.

Whether more will follow suit remains to be seen. For now, fans will simply have to settle for a photo with football’s best young player, rather than what is about to be an expensive signature.

Alexsandro sets out key condition to join West Ham after early January transfer talks

West Ham chiefs are already working to try and save Nuno Espírito Santo when the January window opens for business, with Brazil international defender Alexsandro now a key winter target.

According to recent reports, and amid the Hammers’ dire start to 2025/2026, David Sullivan, Karren Brady and the board are ready to back Nuno to the hilt with new additions mid-season.

Sky Sports reported last week that Nuno has got confirmation funds will be available to spend in January, and West Ham are actively targeting a new defender, midfielder and forward.

Much has been made of their glaring need for a new striker, with Real Madrid sensation Endrick rumoured to be on West Ham’s January shortlist as the east Londoners ponder a loan deal.

However, long-term injuries to Konstantinos Mavropanos and Ollie Scarles have left West Ham desperately short at the back too.

Sunderland 3-0 West Ham

West Ham 1-5 Chelsea

Nottingham Forest 0-3 West Ham

West Ham 0-3 Tottenham

West Ham 1-2 Crystal Palace

Everton 1-1 West Ham

Arsenal 2-0 West Ham

West Ham 0-2 Brentford

Leeds 2-1 West Ham

Mavropanos is expected to be out for up to six weeks after picking up a hamstring injury against Brentford, while Scarles was forced to undergo surgery on his collarbone and could be missing until 2026 (ExWHUemployee).

If West Ham’s desire for a star new defender to shore up their leaky backline wasn’t already there, it definitely is now.

So far, West Ham have conceded more goals than any other side in the Premier League, and it is crystal clear that Nuno needs to resolve this issue as soon as possible.

Bearing this in mind, Nuno has now got his eyes on Alexsandro.

The 26-year-old has been a mainstay for Lille and his impressive performances in France even attracted attention from Premier League title frontrunners Arsenal in the summer.

Before Mikel Arteta’s side eventually signed Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera as their central defensive additions, credible South American news outlet UOL reported that Arsenal held initial talks over Alexsandro, which eventually went nowhere.

This is good news for West Ham, as Nuno is believed to be extremely keen.

Alexsandro makes key demand to join West Ham in January

According to Hammers News, the Irons boss wants him in the first week of January after identifying Alexsandro as the club’s priority defender signing this winter.

A deal is described by one transfer source as having a “good” chance of happening, and early talks have already been held over the centre-back’s potential arrival.

However, Alexsandro has apparently set out a key condition to join West Ham.

It is believed the Ligue 1 star wants “assurances” that there will be a route out of the London Stadium if West Ham enter the doomsday scenario of relegation, so it appears he’s looking for a safety net before committing.

While Alexsandro has been excellent for Lille overall, as evident by the Gunners’ reported interest earlier this year, he has real disciplinary issues.

Last season, the player was handed a seismic 13 bookings in all competitions, picking up three yellow card suspensions in the French top flight alone.

Nuno would need to try and work this out of Alexsandro’s game if the defender moves to Rush Green at the start of next year, but according to ESPN, he could be available for just £26 million.

West Ham have also held talks to sign two more players from the same club
