Why the Wellington Test is key for Shadman, Mominul, Liton and Ebadot

Strong performances from Shadman Islam, Liton Das, Mominul Haque and Ebadot Hossain will not only help Bangladesh’s chances in Wellington, but will give them some breathing room in the Test squad too

Mohammad Isam07-Mar-2019With the Test series against New Zealand in the balance, Bangladesh will have a point to prove in the second Test in Wellington, despite a squad that appears to lack balance. ESPNcricinfo looks at four Bangladesh players who will need good performances to give the team much-needed stability in the absence of senior players like Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim, and give themselves, too, more space in the Test side.Getty ImagesShadman IslamA compact left-handed batsman, Shadman was impressive for the short periods – 43 and 90 minutes – he lasted during the Hamilton Test. His choice of shots seemed conservative for most of his innings, and he only took on Trent Boult and Neil Wagner after he had seen the ball properly.Shadman, however, will have to curb the instinct of looking to break out of a dot-ball rut by trying to play across the line. In both innings, his roll of the wrist while flicking or pulling, did not always time well with the pace of the delivery. If Shadman is successful in the rest of the series, he may well go on to become Tamim Iqbal’s long-term opening partner.Mominul HaqueBefore the Hamilton Test Mominul was equal with Tamim Iqbal for the most Test centuries by a Bangladesh batsman. But all eight of Mominul’s hundreds have come at home, six of them at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. His away average is significantly lower at 23.84 compared to a home average of 56.97.Incidentally, Mominul came into the Bangladesh team in 2012 as someone who tackled pace better than most in his age bracket at the time. He has good memories of Wellington from the tour two years ago, when he batted for more than three hours on the first afternoon, making 64 runs, mainly providing Bangladesh with a platform. The side would need him to score big this time, at the Basin Reserve too.Getty ImagesLiton DasLiton possibly wouldn’t have had a chance had Mushfiqur Rahim been fit, so it is up to him now to ensure that his New Zealand tour finally takes off, after only 3 runs in the three ODIs, and scores of 29 and 1 in Hamilton.Since his breakthrough century against India in the Asia Cup final last September, Liton has not hit form consistently, scoring only fifty in each of the three formats. He is regarded, however, as a batsman for the future, particularly in the Bangladesh top order, although now he has to make do with batting at No 7. Before Mushfiqur returns to the XI, Liton has two more innings to give himself a bit of breathing room and make a case for his selection.Ebadot HossainEbadot was the most impressive of Bangladesh’s pace bowlers in Hamilton, on his debut against a solid batting line-up and could have had a wicket off his second ball, had Soumya Sarkar not dropped Tom Latham in the slips, with the left-hander yet to open his account. It was a cruel blow for Ebadot, who toiled hard for the rest of the game. With a hint of Brett Lee in his run-up, Ebadot bowled faster than Khaled Ahmed or Abu Jayed, although he needs to be patient and stick to a line and length, rather than exploring varying lengths. For example, it was too early for him to try a Neil Wagner-like bouncer barrage in his debut Test.If he can be consistent with his pace, Ebadot has a future in Bangladesh cricket, but he will need wickets to show for his potential.

How Ishant Sharma 2.0 became an impact player

Since 2018, Ishant has been a different bowler, and he has racked up some impressive stats too

Gaurav Sundararaman01-Oct-2019Ishant Sharma’s career started on a strong note after he got the India call-up when just 18. He troubled more than one batsman away in Australia, and was effective in home conditions as well. But it started to go downhill after that, the ride largely a bumpy one. But, ten years on, Ishant has finally hit a peak, and since 2018, he has been one of India’s premier Test bowlers.ESPNcricinfo LtdIshant 2.0Ishant’s career has had an interesting progression graph. In his first 11 Tests, he took 34 wickets at an average of 31.17 and a strike rate of 57.3. This remains Ishant’s best average to date. After a long, hard grind, his average fell back below 35 for the first time only in mid-2018. He was the second slowest to 250 Test wickets (86 Tests) and while more or less regular in the Test XI, was never quite first choice.

Between 2010 and 2017, Ishant played 60 Tests and took 172 wickets at an average of 37.22, striking once every 68 deliveries. However, fortunes turned after that. At the start of 2018, India played Jasprit Bumrah in the first Test against South Africa in Cape Town. Ishant did get his chance in the second Test in Centurion, though, and bowled a crucial spell late on the first day to trigger a collapse by dismissing AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis. Since then, he hasn’t looked back, playing 13 Tests for 52 wickets at an outstanding average of 19.78.Ishant’s average in this period is better than that of Kagiso Rabada, James Anderson, Trent Boult, Stuart Broad and Josh Hazlewood. With all the limelight on Bumrah, Ishant has slipped under the radar somewhat, but his average, strike rate and economy rate are at par with those of Bumrah since the start of 2018. Along with Mohammed Shami, Ishant and Bumrah form a potent pace attack that has been doing exceedingly well around the world over the last two years.

Line and lengthSince 2018, Ishant has also been more successful bowling full in favourable conditions, and his new-found ability to swing the ball and pitch it consistently in one area has resulted in a lot of success. Between 2015 and 2017, Ishant took a wicket once every 64 full-length deliveries. But since 2018, he has been striking once every 26 times he pitches it up.Ishant’s line over the last two years has helped him achieve this. Between 2015 and 2017, he bowled only 47% of his deliveries outside the off stump, while since 2018, this has gone up to 60%. At the same time, between 2015 and 2017, 16% of deliveries were bowled wide outside off stump, but since 2018, this has gone down to 7%. Ishant has made the batsmen play more and this has helped in getting more wickets than he used to earlier.ESPNcricinfo LtdOver the last couple of years, right-arm pacers have been bowling around the wicket to left-hand batsmen with a fair amount of success. Ishant has done so too, and made it work. His average against left-handed batsmen from around the wicket is 21, while over the wicket, it’s 30.

Along the way, Ishant has also racked up a few records. He has the most wickets outside Asia among Indians, behind only Anil Kumble. Thanks to his longevity, and the success India has had overseas recently, Ishant has 20 wins away from home. This is joint second-highest along with Sachin Tendulkar. Only Rahul Dravid has more. Ishant has racked up some good numbers in these away wins, which underscores his impact. He averages 23.50 and strikes once every 46 deliveries, which is 17 less than his career rate.As the leader of the attack, it will be interesting to see how Ishant goes in the upcoming season as he approaches a rare landmark of playing 100 Tests as an Indian pace bowler – only Kapil Dev has achieved it before him.

In Shreyas Iyer, India finally have a No. 4 again

He walked in under pressure and walked out with his reputation enhanced

Alagappan Muthu24-Jan-2020Shreyas Iyer has threatened to play an innings like this for India for a long time; an innings where he seemed invincible. He had no business being that. He should have been very vincible. Out of place even. He had never played a T20I away from home before, let alone dealt with one where he was the last man standing against an opposition transformed. One of the first things he was subjected to after he walked out to bat in Auckland was the sight of his captain being dismissed. New Zealand claimed the wicket of Virat Kohli through a breathtaking catch in the outfield. Stuff like that can completely change the mindset of the fielding team.It gives them belief, the single most important thing when the pressure is on.But Iyer wouldn’t back down. Actually, he kept stepping the bad word up.Two balls after the Kohli dismissal, he backed away and sent a perfectly good length ball aimed at his stumps to the long-off boundary. It was just the perfect response because Eden Park is a place where boundaries are the only things that matter. Bowling teams go there trying to prevent them at all cost and batting teams play without any inhibition because they know even mishits can result in six runs.New Zealand had already benefited from such an approach, with even Kane Williamson happy to slog it around. He reached his fifty off 25 balls, quicker than Colin Munro, the designated dasher of the line-up. If a batsman whose best feature is how late he plays a cricket ball is happy to go out in search for it and manufacture shots that aren’t on, then he is doing it because he has no choice.Iyer knew this well. And even before he touched down in New Zealand, he had been advised to break the shackles.India were in the middle of a series decider against Australia this past week when he had walked out to bat. Most of the work had already been done in that game, but it still ain’t fun when Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc are charging in straight at you.”I knew they were going to attack me on my body,” Iyer said. “They were trying to get on my head.”Kohli was at the other end in Bengaluru. “Shreyas came up and asked me, ‘Should I attack?’ I said yes because the pressure was off us. Because of the [good] position [we were in], I wanted it to be a part of his learning, to take on their best bowlers and his execution was outstanding.”Iyer actually went one better here. True, New Zealand did not have the same quality of bowlers, but they are among the very best in making the most of scoreboard pressure. The World Cup pretty much proved that and they were in the middle of an encore.India spent a period where they made only 22 runs in three overs. It was during this period that they lost both KL Rahul (56 off 27) and Kohli (45 off 32). The equation now read 75 off 48 balls – exactly the kind of situation that has got the better of this side. There was too much of the game still left and none of the top three were around to deal with it.There was a moment – a fleeting moment – when Iyer seemed affected by this. In the 16th over, he went really hard at a legbreak and lost all of his shape, but he had kept enough of his balance to avoid being stumped. Whatever happened between that ball and the next is where India won this game.Maybe Iyer slowed himself down. Maybe he closed his eyes, took in a breath, blocked out the noise and listened only to that voice in his head. Maybe it told him to calm down. The next ball from Sodhi was a tease. The kind Yuzvendra Chahal dishes out all the time. The wide legbreak. The one that a batsman panicking because of the required rate would try to slog into the leg side. Iyer hit that to the point boundary. He stood tall. He moved towards the ball – who does that in T20 cricket? – got his head on top of it and cut it well to the left of the fielder in the deep. It was beautiful. From there on, Iyer would not be stopped. He would even go on to make his opponents look utterly silly. To be fair, Eden Park has a hand in that as well. The only way anyone can keep the runs down there is by either targeting the body and by using slower balls. Tim Southee had already indulged in his variation at the start of the 17th over. Iyer the next one would be at his body. So as it was being sent down, he stepped across his stumps and suddenly the short ball meant to cramp him was, in effect, a short ball down the leg side. An expertly timed pull shot later, India had six more.Iyer was hyper aware of both his game and what the New Zealand bowlers were trying to do. In the next over, when Hamish Bennett started around the wicket, he knew the ball would be on leg stump. He that with a tiny step to his right he would have access to the long leg boundary again. That clever little leg glance was followed by an entirely orthodox flick past long-on.Iyer paced this chase in a manner that was truly incredible. Five of his eight boundaries came off either the first or the second ball of the over. He knew he had to find them otherwise he would never be able to put the pressure back on New Zealand; to make them doubt themselves even though they had the upper hand having dismissed India’s top three. And that is the biggest takeaway from this game. As big as the win itself.India finally have a No. 4 again.

Liverpool may now sell Luis Diaz in swap deal for £164k-p/w Barcelona star

Liverpool are thought to be eyeing a move for a highly-rated player in a possible swap deal with Luis Diaz this summer, according to a new transfer update.

Liverpool stumble in Premier League title push

The Reds slipped up in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, losing 3-2 away to Fulham, following a bitterly disappointing performance at Craven Cottage.

Alexis Mac Allister’s brilliant opening goal seemingly set Liverpool on their way to another vital three points, but some shocking defending from Andy Robertson and co. along with a generally lacklustre performance saw them 3-1 down at half-time, and they deservedly lost.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

It means Arne Slot’s side still need 11 more points to guarantee the Premier League title this season, and while success should still clearly come their way next month, they aren’t always making life easy for themselves at the moment.

Liverpool haven’t quite looked themselves for some time now, crashing out of the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain and losing the EFL Cup final to Newcastle United. While league victories have been recorded against both Southampton and Everton, neither were entirely convincing, and it has heightened the need for summer signings.

Liverpool eyeing Barcelona star Araujo in possible Diaz swap deal

According to Revelo [via Sport Witness], Liverpool are interested in signing Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo at the end of the season as key figures at Anfield are big fans of the player, who earns about £164,000 per week in Catalonia.

He could cost around £64m via a release clause in his contract, but the fee will rise drastically if they cannot agree a deal before the summer.

While a swap deal involving Diaz is far from definite, it is considered a possibility, with the Colombian linked with a move to the Catalan giants plenty of times in recent months and sporting director Deco a big fan.

Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo

A new centre-back is a must for Liverpool this summer, given Virgil van Dijk’s age, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez’s injury records, and the fact that Jarell Quansah is still young. In Araujo, the Reds could have a fantastic option, with Barca legend Carles Puyol paying him enormous praise in the past.

“He’s having a very good season, he’s in extraordinary condition. I’ll stick with what they’ve told me, because I don’t know him personally, but he’s very professional, humble, he always gives his best in training and matches and that’s where his performance is. Right now, if he’s not the best central defender in the world, he’s among the top three. He’s young, he still has room for improvement and I think we have a very good central defender at Barcelona for many years to come.”

Araujo has endured a frustrating season for Barcelona, with injuries restricting him to only six starts in La Liga, but the 26-year-old should still be considered a leading option for Liverpool.

Liverpool have some huge calls to make this summer to build on their success in the Premier League.

A swap deal involving Diaz would arguably be ideal, with doubts persisting over whether the Reds’ No.7 will ever quite become a world-class attacking player like Sadio Mane was on the left wing for so many years at Anfield.

Fabregas a fan: Chelsea want to sign £8m gem with "left foot made of gold"

Chelsea have now joined the race to sign an £8m midfielder, who has a “left foot made of gold”, and he is highly rated by former Blues midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

Blues set to bolster attacking options

Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku haven’t exactly been prolific in front of goal in the Premier League this season, and there have been calls for the Frenchman to be replaced this summer, following another disappointing display against Legia Warsaw.

Viktor Gyokeres has been identified as a potential target at striker, with the Blues now entering talks over a deal for the 26-year-old, while they are also very keen on signing Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic, and a £39m offer could be submitted for the Serbian.

Not only is Enzo Maresca keen to bring in a striker, however, a new attacking midfielder is also of interest, and Lyon’s Rayan Cherki, who could be available for just £20m this summer, is among the potential targets.

Cherki is not the only low-cost target in attacking midfield, however, with a report from Spain revealing Chelsea are now interested in signing Como’s Nico Paz, but there could be stiff competition for the 20-year-old’s signature.

Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain are also named as potential suitors, while Real Madrid hold a buy-back clause, which means they retain the right to sign Paz for an initial fee of just €9m (£8m).

Such is the Blues’ level of interest, they are doing everything they can to secure the youngster’s signature, but Madrid will have the final say on his future, and the west Londoners will be powerless if the La Liga side decide to swoop.

"Wonderful" Paz has "left foot made of gold"

The Argentine has enjoyed a very impressive debut season with Como in the Serie A, picking up six goals and seven assists in 30 appearances, which has led to high praise from football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Kulig has also suggested the Spain-born maestro has a “left foot made of gold”, and his dribbling ability, combined with his ability to set up chances and score goals, suggests he could be a fantastic addition for Chelsea this summer.

Meanwhile, former Blues midfielder Fabregas has also praised Paz this season, saying: “Nico enjoys playing, he can play different roles and he is a very complete player.”

Not only that, but the former Real Madrid man is also adept at the defensive side of the game, as showcased by his performance on several key metrics over the past year.

Paz is an extremely well-rounded midfielder, so it would not be a surprise if Real Madrid activate their buy-back clause, but if a move to Stamford Bridge is a possibility, Chelsea shouldn’t hesitate to snap him up.

Villa transfer rumours heat up as Emery pushes for Champions League football

Unai Emery and his Villa side still have so much to play for between now and the end of the season as they look to qualify for the Champions League once again.

They put in an incredible second-leg display against Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals earlier this month, winning 3-2 at Villa Park, however, they were knocked out 5-4 on aggregate. Villa also have the chance to win silverware in the FA Cup, with a semi-final against Crystal Palace at Wembley this weekend.

It promises to be a dramatic end to the campaign, and talking about Villa’s plans to get into Europe once more, Emery spoke after Villa’s Champions League exit.

“It is now most important to get Europe again. The most important competition is the Champions League. The challenge we have for the last six matches is to try and get Europe and the Champions League. The players showed their capacity to compete at this level. Hopefully we can come back quickly to play in the Champions League. This is our objective and to play in the FA Cup as well for a trophy.”

Should Villa qualify for the Champions League, it could help Monchi when it comes to summer signings. One of those heavily linked with a move to Midlands has been Rosenborg star Sverre Nypan. There have been claims that Villa have made an offer to sign Nypan in a deal that could be worth up to £12.5m, with Fabrizio Romano adding that the Villans are looking to win the race for the in-demand teenager.

Now, a new update has emerged on Aston Villa’s pursuit of Nypan.

According to reports in Norway, relayed by Sport Witness, Monchi was spotted in Norway watching Nypan in a 2-0 win for Rosenborg over Valerenga.

Monchi and scout Alberto Benito held talks with Nypan’s father before the match to discuss terms of a transfer, however, the Villa chief refused to comment when quizzed by newspaper Nettavisen at the hotel where he was staying.

Further developments are expected in the coming days or weeks when it comes to Villa’s move for Nypan, and by the looks of things, Villa could be getting a future star who is being likened to Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard.

Crystal Palace now looking to beat Wolves to signing of £8.5m striker

Crystal Palace are now in a fight with fellow Premier League side Wolves over the signing of an £8.5 million striker, according to a recent report.

Crystal Palace's summer plans become clearer

Oliver Glasner has not only stabilised the situation at Selhurst Park and led the Eagles out of relegation trouble, but he has also led the South Londoners to the FA Cup final.

By winning that famous English trophy, Palace would seal their place in next season’s Europa League as well, and that achievement could do wonders for Palace’s summer transfer budget. Already the Eagles are being linked with several players, as Glasner plots a few changes to his squad this summer.

According to Caught Offside, Palace are in the running to sign midfielder Rayan Cherki from Lyon. The Premier League side are considered dark horses in the race, given that teams such as Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are also interested.

Rayan Cherki

Meanwhile, last week it was reported that Palace could be a step closer to their first signing of the summer, as they have opened talks with Tamiou Kpebane, who currently plays for Eintracht Frankfurt. The 18-year-old is set to become a free agent this summer, and the Eagles are working on bringing him to South London.

Crystal Palace working to beat Wolves to signing of £8.5m striker

Glasner appears to have his eyes on strengthening all parts of his team this summer, as according to Football Insider, Crystal Palace are eyeing a move to sign Phil Harres from German side Holstein Kiel.

The report states that the Eagles have made regular checks on the centre-forward throughout this season and see him as a player who could become a star. However, they are not alone, as Wolves are also keeping a close eye on him, as well as many other teams across Europe.

The 23-year-old joined Holstein Kiel last summer and has made a solid first impression, netting eight goals in 23 league games. But the Bundesliga side are battling relegation and could be resigned to losing their striker, as they value Harres at £8.5 million heading into the summer.

Harres, who has been dubbed an “instinctive” finisher in the past, is naturally a centre-forward, but he can also play as a right-winger, which would be ideal for Glasner as he likes to have flexibility in his forward line.

Current Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park this summer, but the talk of Harres arriving isn’t likely seen as a replacement for the Frenchman but, in fact, a player who can take some of the burden away in terms of being the constant source of goals.

The one concern would be that Harres has only played football in Germany. Therefore, he would arrive with no Premier League experience and could take some time to adjust, given the Bundesliga has produced a fair few flops on English soil.

Arsenal lost out on this year’s Premier League title to Liverpool by a seismic distance, thanks largely to key-player injuries and an inability to put teams away, with Mikel Arteta’s side registering 13 draws in the top flight so far, which is more than any other side in the top nine.

The Gunners did knock Real Madrid out of the Champions League in statement fashion, dismantling Carlo Ancelotti’s side 5-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals, but competition favourites PSG put an end to their European dream in the next round.

It is now back to the drawing board for Arteta and Berta in preparation for 25/26, with a transfer overhaul anticipated at the Emirates this summer.

Arsenal could spend up to £300 million on seven major signings across the squad (GiveMeSport). It is also believed they’re targeting a new second-choice goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, right-winger, left-winger and striker among their recruitment priorities (GiveMeSport).

Arteta’s left side of attack will be a key area to watch, as reports suggest Gabriel Martinelli could be sold by Arsenal in the event of a suitable offer arriving (The Athletic).

Arsenal's GabrielMartinellicelebrates scoring their second goal

Leandro Trossard’s deal also expires in 2026, and with no sign of a renewal so far, Arsenal will be planning for life without the Belgium international if they decide not to extend his stay.

Berta adds Milan star Rafael Leao to Arsenal target list

According to Calciomercato and Italian transfer journalist Daniele Longo, Portugal international Rafael Leao is now emerging as a possible Arsenal solution.

The 25-year-old has been a star player for the Rossoneri over the last few seasons, chalking up 12 goals and 13 assists in all competitions this term, with his form turning heads at N5.

AC Milan's RafaelLeaocelebrates scoring their first goal

It is claimed that new director Berta has personally added Leao to Arsenal’s transfer target list ahead of the summer window, but he could be a pretty expensive option.

His contract contains a €175m (£148m) release clause, which will be active from July 5 to July 15 (Foot Mercato). However, it is unlikely Arsenal would be willing to pay this, and may well look to whittle this down to a far more acceptable and doable fee.

Longo reports that the lowest offer Milan would entertain is around €100m (£85m), which still comes as a pretty significant outlay and would make Leao one of Arsenal’s most expensive ever signings.

A potential deal for the Sporting academy graduate is therefore set to be an ambitious one, and with Chelsea also in contention for Leao, Arsenal face a serious battle on their hands if they wish to tempt him to north London.

Not just Butland: Rangers flop may have played his last game at Ibrox

Glasgow Rangers ended their 2024/25 campaign in the same fashion as how it started; failing to win in Edinburgh.

In August, the Ibrox side could only draw 0-0 against Hearts at Tynecastle, making it the second season in a row where they failed to win the opening match of the Premiership season.

This afternoon, Rangers could only draw 2-2 with Hibernian at Easter Road to end arguably the worst season in the club’s recent history.

Goals from Cyriel Dessers and Nicolas Raskin gave the Gers a 2-1 advantage. A blatantly obvious goal wasn’t awarded when the score was tied at 1-1, despite the ball crossing the Hibs’ line by at least a foot.

Martin Boyle equalised with 25 minutes left, and both teams were forced to take a share of the spoils.

Jack Butland conceded another two goals, and it would be a surprise to see him still at the club next season.

Jack Butland’s future is uncertain at Rangers

The Englishman’s drop-off in form this season has been alarming, to say the least. Across 44 matches in all competitions, Butland has kept only 14 clean sheets, conceding 51 goals in the process.

He has conceded two or more goals in ten of his 28 league matches, and it is clear that the ‘keeper may have potentially played his final game for the club against Hibs.

Jack Butland

Butland should have done better for Kieran Bowie’s effort to make it 1-1, while he misjudged a cross into the box, which meant Martin Boyle had plenty of room to make it 2-2, and failed to prove that Ferguson was wrong to drop him for Liam Kelly in recent weeks.

He isn’t the only player who must depart Ibrox this summer, as plenty of others in the first-team squad will likely be moved on by whoever becomes the club’s permanent manager.

Tom Lawrence must be top of the list, and he proved exactly why during his cameo today.

Rangers must release Tom Lawrence

Across his three full seasons in Glasgow, Lawrence has missed 75 games due to injury issues. During that time period, the Welshman has scored only 12 goals for Rangers.

Earning £22k-per-week, it is evident that the club could be spending this sort of money elsewhere in the squad.

Tom Lawrence

He came on for Mohamed Diomande with 35 minutes left against Hibs, but he failed to solidify the midfield as the Gers chased three points, and he must, now, never play for the Gers again.

The midfielder took just 15 touches, completed eight passes, lost possession four times, and failed to register a single dribble or shot on goal.

Why he was given a runout is questionable, especially with several youngsters on the bench looking to gain much-needed game time heading into the 2025/26 campaign.

Hopefully, the new manager releases the former Derby County star in the summer, as he certainly isn’t of the required quality to help the Glasgow side challenge Celtic domestically next season and has not proven himself to be reliable in terms of availability, as shown by his injury record.

It will be a summer of change at Ibrox. The question is, will it be enough to wrestle back the Premiership crown after four years away?

The veteran Italian coach Massimiliano Allegri has a glittering CV. Not only has he won six Serie A titles across spells at Juventus and Milan, but the 57-year-old has won five Coppa Italia trophies, too.

A serial winner indeed, but Allegri left the Old Lady at the end of the 2023/24 campaign and is still without work, making him one of the standout options on this list.

Francesco Farioli

Last job: Ajax (May 2025)

Francesco Farioli has been quietly making his name as an up-and-coming manager in recent years, with his early career already taking him to Turkey, France and the Netherlands.

His most recent spell at Ajax had the Dutch giants on the brink of an Eredivisie title, but a sensational collapse saw them win just one of their final five games to let PSV – who themselves had a commanding lead at one stage – off the hook.

Farioli resigned in the aftermath of their dramatic season conclusion despite qualifying for the Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp

Last job: Liverpool (May 2024)

Red Bull's Global Head of Soccer JuergenKloppduring a press conference

Jurgen Klopp called time on his dazzling nine-year stay at Liverpool in 2024, leaving the club having restored them as champions of England in 2019/20 after earning their sixth European Cup a year earlier.

Klopp has since taken up a role at Red Bull, where he was appointed as global head of soccer at the start of 2025. Since then, he has been linked with the vacancy at Roma, who recently bid farewell to Claudio Ranieri.

However, Klopp had insisted that he had run out of energy upon his Liverpool exit, so perhaps he will take some time yet before deciding his next coaching role.

4

Julen Lopetegui

Last job: West Ham United (Jan 2025)

West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui

Julen Lopetegui has been unemployed since being let go by West Ham United in early 2025, having been unable to improve the Hammers’ fortunes after replacing David Moyes at the London Stadium.

A Europa League winner with Sevilla, the Spaniard’s CV remains an impressive one, and had previously displayed his managerial prowess in the Premier League with Wolves, so perhaps a better match-up can bring the best out of the ex-Real Madrid and Spain boss.

5

Thiago Motta

Last job: Juventus (Mar 2025)

New Juventus manager Thiago Motta

Thiago Motta announced himself in the managerial world by steering Bologna to an unlikely Champions League place in 2023/24. His success led him to joining Juventus, who had parted with Massimiliano Allegri.

However, his spell as Bianconeri boss was underwhelming, and was dismissed with their Champions League qualification hopes under threat, while their European campaign also had its struggles, exiting the play-off round to PSV.

Motta was sacked in March as results in Serie A continued to disappoint.

6

Marco Rose

Last job: RB Leipzig (Mar 2025)

RB Leipzig coachMarcoRosebefore the match

Marco Rose has had a relatively chequered history when it comes to success in the dugout.

After enjoying league success at Red Bull Salzburg, Rose had mixed spells at Borussia Monchengladbach, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig, his most recent club.

His tenures saw a mixture of Champions League qualifications and mid-table finishes, with the 2024/25 campaign seeing RB Leipzig fail to get out of the league phase in the Champions League as well as a drop-off in form in the Bundesliga. As a result, he is looking for a fifth job in eight years.

7

Roger Schmidt

Last job: Benfica (August 2024)

Roger Schmidt has been out of work since leaving Benfica in August 2024. Across two seasons with the Portuguese side, the German led the club to the league title in his maiden campaign, also winning the Portuguese Super Cup.

Benfica could only finish second behind Sporting CP last year, and after winning 7 points from 12 in the 2024/25 campaign, Schmidt departed the club.

He is no stranger to the pressures of managing a top side, also enjoying spells at PSV and Bayer Leverkusen, but it remains to be seen where he ends up next.

8

Gareth Southgate

Last job: England (July 2024)

Gareth Southgate bowed out after eight years of service as England manager, having twice taken them to the brink of European glory.

The end of the European Championship campaign in the summer of 2024 brought about the end of his tenure, with Southgate calling time after securing two runners-up medals and a first World Cup semi-final since 1990.

Despite him being linked to vacancies at Manchester United and former club Crystal Palace in the recent past, he had originally claimed that he would take a year out after cutting ties with the national team. Does that mean his next role is around the corner?

Erik ten Hag

Last job: Manchester United (October 2024)

Erik ten Hag was sacked by Manchester United having led them to a League Cup triumph in his first season and the FA Cup in his second, but it wasn’t good enough to save his job.

Premier League finishes of third and eighth proved to be what Ten Hag was judged on. Adding in the fact that the Old Trafford side ended bottom of their Champions League group in 2023/24, it was clear he couldn’t get the team playing to his desired style on a consistent basis.

Perhaps a spell at a club with less pressure will allow him to restore his reputation. Having said that, he was linked with the vacant role at Bayer Leverkusen in May, with Xabi Alonso recently departing the German Bundesliga club.

10

Edin Terzić

Last job: Borussia Dortmund (June 2024)

Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic

Edin Terzić led Borussia Dortmund to a surprise appearance in the 2023/24 Champions League final. A 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid was perhaps expected, but it looked like it could usher in a new era for the German side.

Just a week later, Terzic left Dortmund after three seasons in charge across two separate spells. Still young in managerial terms, he could be an ideal candidate for any major job that opens up across Europe.
