Fewer touches than Sanchez: Chelsea man who made 5 passes all game let Poch down

After a disappointing away day in the Northwest on Wednesday evening versus Manchester United, Chelsea travelled to Goodison Park today, where they were defeated 2-0 by Everton.

Abdoulaye Doucoure opened the scoring just after the break, following up from a Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed opportunity to fire low past the helpless Robert Sanchez. Chelsea upped the ante after conceding the opener, but they struggled to create any clear-cut opportunities.

Toffees youngster, Lewis Dobbin, came off the bench to secure the three points and score his first senior goal for Sean Dyche’s side, which concluded yet another setback for Mauricio Pochettino, with his Chelsea team sitting in 12th in the Premier League table.

Chelsea’s stats vs Everton

The Blues enjoyed the majority of the ball as expected, bossing 71% possession in the first half according to Sofascore. Everton offered very little in terms of attacking threat before the break, accumulating 0.11 XG and registering two attempts at goal. Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi dealt with the physicality and movement of Calvert-Lewin with ease.

Chelsea also looked like the most likely side to open the scoring, registering five attempts at goal and earning five corners. Cole Palmer had three attempts from almost the same spot, cutting inside onto his stronger left foot and unleashing each strike just outside the box.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Pochettino would have hoped that his half-time team talk inspired his side to push on and collect three points. Instead, Chelsea went a goal behind after Everton came out flying.

From that point on, Dyche set up his usual low block with the view of holding onto their one goal lead, the onus was on Chelsea and their creative players to pull the Toffees apart. Therefore, Chelsea racked up even more possession than the first period, 73%, and they had no choice but to commit players forward.

In fairness to the away side, they can’t be faulted for a lack of trying and they tallied up 11 attempts at goal, however, they failed to create a single big chance, reflected in the total xG of 0.93. Almost all of the creativity was on the shoulders of 21-year-old Palmer, which made defending their own box a simple task for Everton.

Armando Broja’s game in numbers

Following Nicolas Jackson’s poor showing in the week, Pochettino handed Albanian forward, Armando Broja, a rare chance to prove his worth by leading the line.

The aggressiveness of Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski seemed to overwhelm the 22-year-old striker, who only completed five passes all game, completing five of them, showing just how little he was involved in the play. The attacker appeared to be incredibly isolated throughout with his lack of involvement highlighted by the fact that goalkeeper Sanchez registered more touches of the football.

Considering the Everton centre-half pairing is strong when the ball is in front of them, starting Broja in the first place is a slightly questionable decision by Pochettino, especially when Jackson and even Raheem Sterling were on the bench, as the duo are much more dynamic and offer movement in behind.

That said, it is difficult and unfair to judge Broja just off this game, with the number 19 clearly lacking match fitness and confidence.

It was a performance that you would expect from a player who missed 274 days last season through injury and just 223 minutes under his belt this campaign.

Reporter drops Wolves January transfer update he’s heard from Molineux

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made an encouraging start to the campaign under Gary O'Neil and Sunday People reporter Neil Moxley has now given an update on their potential January transfer activity in the striking department.

Wolverhampton Wanderers continue to impress…

Despite a recent wobble, Wolves have lost just three of their last ten fixtures across all competitions and look like a sure-fire bet to retain their Premier League status in comfortable fashion, given that they sit ten points above 18th-place Luton Town on 19 points with 16 fixtures played.

Last weekend, a 1-1 draw at Molineux helped to extend their unbeaten run on home soil to six matches; however, the Old Gold will be frustrated that they weren't able to see victory over the line against Steve Cooper's stubborn Nottingham Forest outfit.

Top target: Wolves now eyeing cut-price swoop for "fabulous" player in January

Gary O’Neil could land himself a potential bargain…

By
Sean Markus Clifford

Dec 10, 2023

Sharing his post-match thoughts, O'Neil echoed this sentiment and indicated his frustration that his side couldn't fashion more opportunities on the day, stating via the club's official website: "We’re probably all feeling as the fans feel, just frustrated that we didn’t show more quality and more oomph to cause them some problems."

West Ham United represent the Old Gold's next test in the English top-flight this weekend followed closely by a congested run of fixtures where they will take on Chelsea, Everton and Brentford, with the latter being pitted against Wolves in both league and FA Cup action.

Undoubtedly, part of O'Neil's impressive work at Molineux has centred around getting the most out of his players in the final third, with the likes of Matheus Cunha, Hwang Hee-chan, Pedro Neto Pablo Sarabia and Sasa Kalajdzic all coming up with important goal contributions over the course of 2023/24.

Now, reporter Moxley has given an insight into potential January transfer plans in the West Midlands, with a particular emphasis being placed on the striking department.

Neil Moxley suggests Wolves will add goals in January

Moxley also signalled his belief that £7-10 million may be available to spend in January, stating: "I think somewhere between £7m-£10m. I think that's about right. I think that's the sort of money they have to spend in January.

"I hope they spend it wisely because adding a few more goals to a team that has struggled a little bit over the years, even when Nuno Espirito Santo was taking them up the league, they relied heavily on the goals of Raul Jimenez and have struggled a little bit to replicate that. So yeah, I'd like to see them spend a little bit of money and get an alternative up front because goals are hard to come by."

Of course, the Premier League can be a cruel mistress regarding injuries and drops in form that can influence certain players, which makes the prospect of Wolves looking to bring another attack-minded player into the building in January a potentially wise move as O'Neil aims to break into the top half of the table.

'Absolute disaster!' – Thomas Tuchel rages at decision to disallow Matthijs de Ligt’s 113th-minute equaliser for Bayern Munich in Champions League defeat to Real Madrid

Thomas Tuchel has raged at the “absolute disaster” decision that denied Matthijs de Ligt a late equaliser for Bayern Munich against Real Madrid.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Bundesliga outfit had been leading the heavyweight semi-final tie with three minutes left on the clock, but – having taken the decision to replace 44-goal striker Harry Kane – suffered a dramatic collapse as Blancos substitute Joselu netted twice in the space of three minutes.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bayern thought they had snatched a 113th-minute equaliser when Dutch defender De Ligt hit the net, but play had already been stopped for a debatable offside call and the effort was chalked off – and could not be reviewed by VAR.

  • WHAT TUCHEL SAID

Match officials are told to delay such calls when decisions are so tight, with Noussair Mazraoui potentially level with the last man, and Bayern boss Tuchel told afterwards: “That was an absolute disaster. A violation of the rules. This scene must be played out to the end. That's the rule. The linesman made the mistake, and the referee made the second mistake. We were almost there and a very unusual mistake of the best player for the equaliser, then we conceded in a very narrow decision in stoppage time. Then we scored one and it was a disastrous decision from the linesman and the referee, so it feels almost like a betrayal in the end because of that decision. The linesman said sorry. That does not help at that kind of level, to raise the flag in a decision like this, in a close decision in the last minute. The referee as well, he does not have to whistle, he sees that we win the second ball, he sees that we get the shot away. To whistle is a very, very bad decision. It is against the rules and it is a bad decision from both of them. It is a disaster, tough to swallow, but it is the way it is.”

    DID YOU KNOW?

Tuchel added: “Having the balls to raise the flag in a situation like that is a big mistake. And then the referee, when he saw that we won the rebound, made the decision to whistle. It wouldn't have happened the other way round. We accept the apology (from the linesman) but this is not the time to apologise. It's the semi-finals and it's not the time to make those sort of mistakes.”

Rangers can repeat Mols masterclass by signing "electrifying" star

Glasgow Rangers will be keen to put Old Firm disappointment behind them as the Ibrox side prepare to face Kilmarnock in the Premiership tomorrow.

Philippe Clement will be targeting all three points and the chance to go into the winter break within touching distance of Celtic.

With the transfer window now open, the Belgian will turn his attention to improving his current Gers squad, and it could be a busy month.

Rangers transfer news – Million Manhoef

The Light Blues are desperate for some attacking reinforcements ahead of the second half of the season and, according to the Scottish Sun, they have been linked with a move for winger Million Manhoef this month.

The youngster could cost Clement around £2.5m, yet it would be money well spent, especially considering the Light Blues have kept tabs on him for the previous 12 months.

Leicester City and Preston North End are also interested in the player, but the lure of European football and the chance to win trophies will surely give the Gers the edge.

Rangers have had plenty of success in the past with recruiting from the Dutch market, none more so than Michael Mols, who became a cult hero during his time in Glasgow.

Mols' time at Rangers

Mols joined the Ibrox side in 1999 and scored 13 goals in his first 20 matches, endearing himself to the supporters with his sublime finishing skills and ability to score from just about anywhere.

During a Champions League clash against Bayern Munich just a few months into his spell at the club, he suffered a serious injury which kept him out of action for the next couple of years.

While he wasn’t quite the same player when he returned, Mols played a crucial role in the Gers winning a treble during the 2002/03 campaign, netting some vital goals in the process, and he ended his stint in Glasgow the following season.

Million Manhoef’s season in numbers

Manhoef could have a similar impact should he sign for the Light Blues this month.

The 21-year-old has shone for a struggling Vitesse side this term, scoring four goals in 15 league matches, and he certainly looks like a dangerous threat out wide.

Clement could land Wright upgrade as Rangers line up bid for £2.5m wizard

By
Dan Emery

Dec 31, 2023

Kai Watson, who runs the Rangers Journal, stated that the winger has “electrifying pace” and “confidence on the ball” and these traits could see him stand out in this Rangers side.

Across the Vitesse team this season, Manhoef currently ranks second for shots on target per game (1.1), along with ranking third for key passes per game (1.3) and first for successful dribbles per game (2.7), certainly proving how effective he has been during 2023/24.

Million Manhoef's 2022/23 statistics.

Clement is in desperate need of some fresh attacking talent ahead of the second half of the season and a move for the Dutch youngster makes perfect sense.

With knockout stage European football to come along with sustaining a title challenge, the 49-year-old coach will need to build a side which can challenge on both fronts and getting his transfer business done early will be a big advantage for the Gers.

Liverpool given update in pursuit of Crystal Palace ace Michael Olise

A significant update has dropped regarding Liverpool's potential move for a "special" Premier League player, with some key contract details emerging.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds could be active in the transfer market this month should Jurgen Klopp feel that new faces are needed in his squad in order to boost their title hopes.

Various individuals have been linked with moves to Anfield, with Sporting CP centre-back Goncalo Inacio a player whose name has cropped up numerous times in recent months. The Portuguese is also capable of shining as a left-back, which could be an added reason for signing him.

The addition of another midfielder also may not be out of the question, and Fulham enforcer Joao Palhinha is a figure who has emerged as a potential option for Liverpool, although the Cottagers will demand a huge fee for his services.

Speaking of Premier League players, Crystal Palace star Michael Olise could also be on his way to Anfield in the near future, but there is stiff competition for his signature.

Key Michael Olise to Liverpool update

According to Football Insider, Olise's contract includes a new release clause, which could see him signed for over £40m.

"Liverpool target Michael Olise has a new release clause in his Crystal Palace contract worth well in excess of £40million, sources have told Football Insider. It is believed interest in the 22-year-old’s services will not subside this summer despite him signing a new deal at Selhurst Park in August.

"All signs now point to a big summer race for Olise’s signature – with his release clause likely to stand at more than £40million.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Palace are in for a “hard battle” to keep hold of their star man despite him committing to new terms just last year."

Olise is enjoying a fantastic season for Palace, arguably standing out as one of the most exciting Premier League players outside of the 'big six'. He may only have made nine appearances in the competition in 2023/24 to date, but five goals have come his way in that time, as well as one assist.

The Frenchman is not dissimilar to Mohamed Salah in terms of favouring a right-sided role and cutting onto his deadly left foot, and he could even be a long-term replacement for the Egyptian superstar. Former Palace manager Patrick Vieira is clearly an admirer of Olise, saying of him in 2022:

"He can score goals, create chances and he is a special talent. He will improve and get better as a player. His work ethic every day has been terrific since he has been at the football club."

It won't be easy for Liverpool to sign Olise given the apparent interest from the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea, but the lure of playing under Klopp could be enough to see the Palace winger at Anfield in the summer.

Xabi Alonso, Pep Guardiola and the 21 best managerial jobs from around Europe in the 2023-24 season – ranked

It has been a season full of shocks and surprise packages, but which coach deserves the most credit for their work?

Another gruelling European season is drawing to a close, with the continent's biggest prize on the line in the final competitive match of the campaign on Saturday as Real Madrid take on Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final at Wembley. For those not involved, though, it's a time to take stock and reflect on another nine months of hard work.

Across Europe, 2023-24 will go down as one of the most extraordinary club seasons in recent memory, as teams in each of the top five leagues punched well above their weight – some to an unprecedented extent – and others wrote their own history away from the spotlight; it has truly been a season for the underdog.

But who are the coaches who have masterminded these success stories and deserve special praise? Below, GOAL ranks the 21 managers across Europe who have done the very best jobs…

    21Bo Henriksen (Mainz)

Mainz seemed completely doomed when Bo Henriksen was appointed in January, with the club nine points from safety in the Bundesliga. However, the Dane masterminded a stunning turnaround off the back of a Harry Kane-inspired 8-1 walloping by Bayern Munich, as Die Nullfunfer went nine games unbeaten to finish the season two points clear of the relegation play-off place.

    20Edin Terzic (Borussia Dortmund)

The domestic season was a thoroughly uninspiring one for Dortmund and Edin Terzic, with BVB finishing fifth in the Bundesliga, a whopping 27 points behind German champions Bayer Leverkusen, and exiting the DFB-Pokal at the round-of-16 stage. However, despite all of that, Terzic finds himself on the cusp of history with one game left to play this season: the Champions League final against Real Madrid on Saturday.

The young coach has overseen an impressive European campaign, with the underdogs' semi-final defeat of Paris Saint-Germain particularly eye-catching- a result that incidentally helped to secure Champions League qualification next season as the UEFA coefficient handed the Bundesliga a fifth spot.

    19Arne Slot (Feyenoord)

Bigger things beckon for Arne Slot, who is on his way to the Premier League to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, but he bid farewell to Feyenoord by delivering more silverware and another memorable campaign in Rotterdam. Although he was not able to retain the Eredivisie title he claimed in 2023, Slot guided Feyenoord to a Dutch Cup triumph and they were PSV's closest challengers in the league, finishing second to qualify for the Champions League.

    18Jurgen Klopp (Liverpool)

Ultimately it was a case of what could have been for Klopp and Liverpool, as a challenge for a potential quadruple in what would become the German's final season at the club eventually evaporated. Still, it was a season to remember as a rebuilt Reds side recovered from a rough 2022-23 campaign to play their part in a scintillating Premier League title race against Manchester City and Arsenal, only falling away at the death.

A third-place finish was commendable, and they still collected some silverware along the way in the form of the Carabao Cup. Klopp will be deeply missed at Anfield, in the Premier League and beyond.

now reports that amid speculation over the future of the 53-year-old, the FA are yet to begin the search for his replacement, just in case he does depart. Clement could land Rangers’ next Bassey in deal for "unbelievable" target

Glasgow Rangers wrapped up their winter break by drawing 2-2 with FC Copenhagen at Ibrox on Tuesday evening, and it is now back to the domestic calendar for the Gers this weekend.

Philippe Clement will be hoping to start the second half of the season with a bang as the Glasgow side face Dumbarton in the Scottish Cup, and it could be a chance to give some fringe players a chance in the starting XI.

With just two weeks left of the January transfer market, the Light Blues have only brought in one player thus far – a loan deal for Fabio Silva until the end of the season.

If Clement wishes to challenge on both European and domestic fronts over the next couple of months, he will need to add another one or two players to his squad, especially as fixture congestion could be a real possibility.

With several positions in desperate need of rejuvenation, could the 49-year-old be targeting a move for another centre-back this month?

Rangers’ search for new signings

During the summer transfer window last year, the Gers were showing interest in highly rated Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell, but no move ever materialised.

Fast-forward a few months, and it appears as though they are still one of the teams interested in the youngster. According to pundit Carlton Palmer, that is.

Speaking to Football League World, the former professional said: “Daniel Farke has repeatedly said Leeds won’t allow Charlie Cresswell to go out on loan.

Charlie Cresswell for Leeds United

“There is plenty of interest for Charlie. Boro, Stoke, Ipswich, Rangers to name a few.”

Recently, Daniel Farke has said that Cresswell won't be part of his first team plans when talking with the media, saying: “He won’t be picked until he is ready, mentally ready. I just want players who want to be there, accept their role and are fully on it.”

Could this perhaps tempt Clement into making a move for the player during the final few weeks of the transfer window in order to bolster his defence?

Clement could sign his next Disasi in Rangers move for 6 foot starlet

Rangers appear to be eyeing a move for a Championship defender this month.

By

Jan 5, 2024

The Englishman may be a rough diamond, yet he has shown plenty of promise down south, and he could follow in the footsteps of Calvin Bassey and potentially be the next £23m talent to emerge from the Ibrox side.

How Charlie Creswell compares to Calvin Bassey

Bassey moved to Rangers in the summer of 2020 following a spell at Leicester City, but he failed to make an appearance for the senior side and ended up costing the Gers just £230k as a training compensation fee.

This meant Steven Gerrard was able to sign a promising young talent and give them confidence they could flourish in Scotland.

Despite making only 15 appearances as the Light Blues won their first league title in a decade, the following season saw the Nigerian international rise to prominence.

Calvin Bassey

Due to an injury crisis at the heart of the defence, Bassey moved from his natural left-back slot alongside Connor Goldson at centre-back and the duo forged a formidable partnership as he ended up making 50 appearances in all competitions.

Indeed, Bassey shone as the club reached the Europa League final in 2022 and his performances clearly attracted interest from the continent.

Ajax stumped up a fee of close to £23m in order to prise the defender from the Glasgow side and his sale is the record for the club.

While his spell in the Netherlands was not the most rewarding, he has since joined Fulham and is impressing in the Premier League – starting 12 top-flight games so far this term.

Cresswell, should he move to Rangers, could take notice of Bassey’s career path, as it proves that showcasing your talents in Scotland could ensure a lucrative move after a few years.

The current Leeds defender plays in the same position as Bassey and, even though he has played senior matches down south, finds himself in a position where he is not playing as often as his talents deserve.

How Charlie Cresswell could fit into the Rangers side

Clement currently has five senior centre-backs in his squad, yet four of them are fighting it out to be Goldson’s regular partner.

Leon Balogun’s contract expires at the end of the season, and he will likely depart, while Ben Davies has not endured the best of times under Clement, making just six appearances since the 49-year-old arrived in mid-October, and it looks as though his future lies away from the club.

John Souttar has been plagued with injury issues since joining in 2022, missing 46 games last term, meaning he cannot be relied on to be fit for a full campaign.

Charlie Cresswell

Leon King is still young and could emerge as a future star, but he must be given more opportunities. Cresswell, then, could force his way into the starting XI should he make the move north of the border and his spell at Millwall last season proves that he has what it takes to slot into the Gers side.

The defender not only ranked second among the squad for average Sofascore rating in the Championship during 2022/23 (7.13), but he also ranked second for accurate passes per game (28.1), first for accurate long balls per game (four) and third for interceptions per game (1.3), indicating that his talents were on full show at the Den.

The “unbelievable” 6 foot titan, as dubbed by Leeds presenter Joe Wainman two years ago, even won a staggering 7.6 total duels per game – a success rate of 60% – and this impressive physicality could see him thrive in Scotland.

Clement is going to need to act swiftly if he aims to bring the defender to Ibrox, especially as there are other clubs showing interest in the 21-year-old this winter.

He may need to move some deadwood on to ensure a permanent deal goes ahead, but this shouldn’t be too difficult.

The next few weeks could be interesting indeed with regard to who potentially arrives at Ibrox and if the Belgian manager can pull off a couple of solid signings, it could prove to be the catalyst which sees the club win another trophy or two this term.
