Azhar rues batting 'misjudgment'

Batting collapses aren’t new to Pakistan cricket, but after falling from 32 for 1 to 152 for 7 in 37 overs on the second day in Pallekele, even Azhar Ali, the team’s vice-captain, could not offer an explanation

Ever since the Galle turnaround, Pakistan’s batting has combusted time and again. Batting collapses aren’t new to Pakistan cricket, but after falling from 32 for 1 to 152 for 7 in 37 overs on the second day in Pallekele, even Azhar Ali, the team’s vice-captain, could not offer an explanation.Azhar, like several of his team-mates, was guilty of throwing his wicket away despite being one of the few batsmen settled at the crease. Before that, on a pitch that was not unplayable by any means, Ahmed Shehzad was done by his own remiss, and Asad Shafiq played across the line to be trapped lbw.Was it fair to call Pakistan’s batting careless?”I don’t think careless is the right word, but you can say misjudgment,” Azhar said. “We all were out there with a positive frame of mind and were very much focused but it didn’t work out. You sometime hit a ball for a boundary and the same ball gets you out as well, which is part of the game. You can’t just say that we were careless.”They (Sri Lanka bowlers) bowled in the right areas this time, again otherwise the wicket is still very good for Test cricket as it has everything for everyone. The main point we lacked today was not building big partnerships otherwise it could have been different scenario. We anchored small partnerships but converting them into bigger partnerships was the only thing missed. Small partnership in intervals looked easy for us for a while, but then again, we lost few wickets in the wrong time and we never got time to get settled.”The collapse undid most of the good work done by the Pakistan bowlers, who bundled Sri Lanka out for 278, as the visitors still trailed by 69 runs with just one wicket in hand going into day three. Before the Test, Misbah-ul-Haq had suggested that his team had their best chance of beating a weakened Sri Lanka side at their home, but Pakistan’s performance on Saturday did little to justify that belief. Azhar, though, felt the game was still open.”We still have a chance to beat Sri Lanka by trying to exploit the absence of big names in their team. But at the same time, whoever they have are very good players representing their country. We are applying ourselves with full strength to beat them but we have to be on top of our game.”This Test is still open and the closer we get to their score, it will increase our chances to pull this in our way. The third innings is always important and if we managed to get them out early, we are capable of turning things around like we did in Galle as well. So there is plenty of time in the match and we are positive about everything. From tomorrow, it will be a new day and we look forward to it.”Pakistan may sound optimistic, but at the moment, only Yasir Shah is on top of his game. The game may not be lost, but the momentum most certainly has.”It’s Test cricket because it test you in different sessions, and if we managed to pull ourselves together in the coming days and play our best cricket, then we can win this game and we are positive about this,” Azhar said.”The only problem we have had so far is that we couldn’t convert the smaller partnerships into big ones. It’s not like the pitch wasn’t good, it is equally good for batsmen, but each one of us have to apply ourselves and have to work hard to get the best out of this.”

Gabriel and Charles rip through Patriots

A devastating start spearheaded by Shannon Gabriel and Fidel Edwards set the tone for St Lucia Zouks’ seven-wicket win over St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in Gros Islet

A devastating start spearheaded by Shannon Gabriel and Fidel Edwards set the tone for St Lucia Zouks’ seven-wicket win over St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in Gros Islet. Gabriel was named Man of the Match after he combined with Edwards to reduce Patriots to 19 for 4 in the fifth over and eventually finished with a career-best 3 for 19.The Patriots won the toss and chose to bat on their CPL debut but got off to a rocky start after Evin Lewis dragged a full delivery from Edwards onto his stumps in the second over for a duck. Straight off a plane from England, Martin Guptill could only muster 14 as he flicked Gabriel to Kemar Roach at short fine leg.Orlando Peters was then dismissed for a duck next over. The Zouks made it two in two balls after Shane Dowrich began the fifth over by clipping Gabriel straight to Kyle Mayers at midwicket for two.Marlon Samuels and Devon Thomas staged a good recovery and put on 78 together for the fifth wicket. The partnership had produced 38 with Samuels on 20 when he hoicked Mayers into the air at deep midwicket but a sprinting Darren Sammy failed to hang onto to the catch despite a diving effort. Samuels went on to make an unbeaten 52 and added a further 50 together with Sohail Tanvir for the seventh wicket as a late surge took them to 149.The Zouks got off to a cautious start with just two runs off the first over bowled by Tanvir. Andre Fletcher ramped up the pace in the second by cracking Sheldon Cottrell for two fours and a six wide of long on in an 18-run stanza. Johnson Charles then got in on the act in the third with a four and six off Sohail Tanvir to make it 33 for 0 after three before another three boundaries were taken off Shahid Afridi in the following over. By the end of the Powerplay, the Zouks were cruising at 61 for 0.The lone bright spot in the field for the Patriots was CPL debutant Nikhil Dutta. The 20-year-old Canadian offspinner came on in the seventh over and should have struck with his third ball when Charles, on 20, went for a mighty heave across the line and produced a top edge to short third man where Cottrell fluffed a straightforward chance. Dutta was denied the wicket of Charles again in the ninth over, this time on 29, after he walked across his stumps and was pinned in front after missing another slog but a shout for leg before was turned down.Dutta’s luck finally turned two balls later when Fletcher mistimed a reverse sweep and the ball ballooned in the air off his gloves for a simple catch taken behind the stumps by Thomas to end the opening stand at 81 and Fletcher’s innings for 48. Dutta came back on for a second spell in the 13th over as part of an entertaining duel with Kevin Pietersen. Two overs prior, Pietersen looked to be settled after tonking Shahid Afridi over midwicket for six, but Pietersen had trouble picking the mystery spinner Dutta in his first three deliveries before driving Dutta over cover. Dutta responded by dragging the length back slightly with one that turned sharply to bowl Pietersen through the gate for 18.The Patriots could not find a way to dislodge Charles though and paid for the earlier reprieve. He brought up his 50 in 34 balls when he smashed Tabraiz Shamsi straight down the ground. Dutta’s first three overs went for only 15 but his figures were spoiled in the 15th over when Charles thumped two sixes over midwicket. Ross Taylor finished the match in the following over with 26 balls to spare.

Doug Bracewell has been ruled out of the second Test against Australia in Christchurch after picking up a right shoulder injury.New Zealand will not call a replacement into their squad ahead of the Test starting on Saturday with pace duo Matt Henry and Neil Wagner already with the team.Bracewell has been diagnosed with a strained rotator cuff muscle after reporting pain following the first Test in Wellington where he took 2 for 127 off 33 overs. Bracewell was also the bowler to suffer when Richard Illingworth incorrectly called no-ball to deny him the wicket of Adam Voges late on the opening day.”Doug has been a consistent performer for us this summer and put a lot of work into his game, so to miss out on the final Test against Australia is very disappointing for him and us,” Mike Hesson, the New Zealand coach, said. “He’ll be given time to recover and we’ll work with him to get him back training as quickly as possible.”Bracewell joins a New Zealand injury list which already included Ross Taylor and Mitchell Santner who will both miss the second Test – which will be the last international appearance for Brendon McCullum – after being ruled out of the Wellington encounter.

Rogers enthused by Somerset challenge

Chris Rogers feels that “life has come full circle” as he settles in the south-west of England for the first time since he left Australia to pursue his cricket career as a fresh-faced 18-year-old

David Hopps08-Apr-20160:38

Can a county compete in all competitions?

Chris Rogers feels that “life has come full circle” as he settles in the south-west of England for the first time since he left Australia to pursue his cricket career as a fresh-faced 18-year-old.Twenty years on, the Somerset captaincy might have been a challenge designed for him as Rogers seeks new inspiration following his retirement from international cricket at the end of last summer’s Ashes series. That circle, though, has not quite been joined up. Mark Overton provided early guidance as skipper of North Devon at a time when his sons – Somerset’s fast-bowling twins Craig and Jamie – were still in nappies. But when Rogers leads Somerset for the first time in the Championship against Durham at Chester-le-Street on Sunday the fast bowlers he expects to light up his season will be conspicuous by their absence.Rogers was already braced for the absence of Craig Overton as he completes a two-match suspension for an alleged racist outburst and now Jamie Overton will also miss Somerset’s opening Championship match of the season against Durham at Chester-le-Street because of a slight hamstring tear suffered on a pre-season tour to Spain. It is an unfortunate start for two quick bowlers who spent time with England’s senior squad last summer – although neither made a debut – and who Rogers expects to be at the heart of Somerset’s youthful pace attack.Craig Overton, in particular, is regarded by Somerset’s head coach Matt Maynard as “one of the most consistent bowlers in England in the last couple of seasons” and both Maynard and Rogers will be anxious for him to achieve his international potential this summer and become potty trained as far as sledging is concerned – he fell foul of the umpires three times last season. It all culminated in an alleged outburst to Ashar Zaidi, then at Sussex, now with Essex, to “go back to your own f******* country.” The ECB only charged him with a Level One offence after receiving reports from all parties, but his third transgression of the season brought an automatic two-match ban – a punishment immediately condemned as inadequate by Kick It Out, sport’s anti-racism pressure group.Without the identical twins, Somerset’s pace attack will be stretched. Josh Davey, the Scotland seamer, could make his Championship debut for the county or 18-year-old Ben Green could earn a first-class debut on a ground where, especially in April, seam bowling can be expected to dominate.Rogers is aware of the possibility that this might turn out to be his farewell season and, if so, he yearns for a happy ending. If he fulfils the prediction of Maynard, that he can develop the side “like Viv Richards” – Maynard played under Richards’ captaincy at Glamorgan – then all will be well.”I don’t think I’ve ever been compared to Viv before,” Rogers laughed. He has built a career on dependability – cautious drives and shrewd nudges – so if he charges a fast bowler on Sunday in an effort to whack him over midwicket it could have expected consequences.Rogers has averaged more than 50 in first-class matches at all four English counties he has represented – Derbyshire, Northants, Leicestershire and Middlesex – and if he wants a lesson in how to maintain commitment after calling time on Australia, he only needs to consider the example of the man he has replaced, Marcus Trescothick, who is beginning his 10th county summer since a stress-related illness brought his England career to a close. His Somerset finale only became a possibility when Middlesex decided to look elsewhere. “They wanted their overseas player to be involved in T20 and my hope was to finish my career at Lord’s, so that was a bit disappointing,” he said, “but completely understandable.”The south-west, though, is a wonderful consolation. “I came here as an 18-year-old at North Devon and had three years there and a year at Exeter,” Rogers said. “I love the south west – it is as close as you can get to Australia in the UK.”When I got the chance to sign here it was in many ways like coming full circle. It would have been nice in many respects to finish at Middlesex but in many ways this was equally a great opportunity.”It’s a new challenge and that is something to look forward to as an older player. Coming as a captain that is as important as anything. Our pride is on the line. So that is going to drive me. I think it is part of my make-up to want to compete all the time. I want to lead from the front not just with the captaincy but with the runs.”

Não me arrependo disso’, disse o peruano.

Com a camisa do Corinthians, Paolo Guerrero conquistou o Mundial de Clubes-12, Campeonato Paulista-13 e Recopa Sul-Americana-13.

Clarke signs up for Hong Kong's domestic T20 league

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has signed with Kowloon Cantons for the inaugural edition of Hong Kong’s domestic Twenty20 league, the Hong Kong T20 Blitz

A marriage of convenience will see Michael Clarke try to kickstart his Twenty20 career via the fledgling Hong Kong Blitz later this month.Clarke, who retired from international cricket in August 2015, then announced his return to grade cricket too late to be considered for the IPL auction and has not yet stirred much interest from clubs ahead of next season’s Big Bash League. T20 was not his strong suit as a cricketer – he played his last recognised T20 game in 2012 – and the decision to offer his services to Hong Kong around two weeks ago suggests he knows he has to start somewhere.Equally the organisers of the new competition, set to be played from May 27 to 29, are delighted to have secured a cricketing name of Clarke’s stature. Ashes and World Cup victories make him an instantly recognisable figure to help promote a tournament designed to build interest in T20 in the region.”To summarise Michael’s credentials is impossible, he is simply one of the best cricketers of this generation, if not ever,” Hong Kong Cricket Association (HKCA) chief executive Tim Cutler said. “Hong Kong cricket has delivered many firsts recently, however to have a recent Test captain who oversaw a famous Ashes whitewash, the 2015 World Cup victory and whom sat atop the world batting rankings a number of times is just incredible.”Not only does this vindicate the effort in putting the tournament together, it also shows the growth of cricket in East Asia. With over 80,000 participants in China there is immense potential in East Asia. With rugby and soccer both making strategic plays into the nascent Chinese sporting market, we look forward to working with the ICC and Asian Cricket Council in growing cricket throughout the region.”Clarke’s contract with the tournament also includes a mentoring component, and he has committed to a pair of two-hour sessions discussing cricket and leadership with the developing men’s and women’s squads. The men’s team appeared at the World T20 tournament in India earlier this year.”A key area for our national squads, both men and women, is to grow strong leadership, and to have someone such as Michael Clarke to spend some time mentoring and providing input in this key area is very exciting,” the HKCA director of cricket Charlie Burke said. “It’s not every day you get to pick the brains of a former Test and World Cup winning captain that has had a very successful time at the helm.”It says a lot about Michael that he wants to help cricket grow in an emerging region, and we thank him for reaching out to us.”Hong Kong Cricket has ambitions to build on the initial Blitz, perhaps by attracting BBL fixtures to the city in the future whenever Cricket Australia decides to expand the number of matches and/or teams.
