Bopara hindered by lack of consistent role

England and Sunrisers Hyderabad allrounder Ravi Bopara has said his up-and-down career was largely a consequence of never having a definite role in any team

Ravi Bopara on the IPL: “You don’t play in this sort of atmosphere anywhere in the world.”•BCCI

England and Sunrisers Hyderabad allrounder Ravi Bopara has said his up-and-down career was largely a consequence of never having a definite role in any team.”Yeah there have been a lot of stop-starts. I think a lot of that’s down to never having a consistent role in a side,” Bopara told ESPNcricinfo. “I am mainly a top-order batsman who bowls a little bit, and I may have been viewed as a middle-order batsman, finishing batsman, and someone who bowls a bit. So that maybe part of the reason.”Bopara’s international career has never found a rhythm. Even after 120 ODIs and 38 T20Is, apart from 13 Test matches, his place in the England team has not always been certain. “I wouldn’t say I am 100% satisfied so far,” he said. “I am still only 29 years old, so I have many years to play yet.”The IPL provided an opportunity for Bopara to upgrade his game, and he wants to make the most of it. “IPL is free-flowing cricket. It’s a lot of fun, great crowds, it’s a great experience as a cricketer. You don’t play in this sort of atmosphere anywhere in the world.”You can even learn from the young cricketers and you can learn from the best overseas as well. There’s guys like Murali, VVS Laxman, Tom Moody. It’s always good to speak those guys.”As for his role in the Sunrisers set-up, Bopara said his brief was to bat “any number from 3, 4, 5, 6 and bowl at least two overs every game.”I know I need to do my job as an allrounder. I have played under Tom Moody for a couple of seasons, and I think he knows what I am capable of and what my best role is.”The fastidious approach of some Indian cricketers to sharpening specific limited-overs skills impressed Bopara. “One of the things you learn as a T20 cricketer is being able to hit the ball anywhere in the park, whether it’s behind you or in front of you. It’s not a joke to be able to clear the boundaries. Even the fans watching know that you just got to be up to play 360 degrees.”From some of the Indian cricketers I have learnt about the way they bowl in these conditions. They are very adamant about changes of pace and being able to get your yorkers in, because if you miss your yorkers in India you generally go for six. And they are very specific on that so it’s nice to see that.”Bopara did not have a huge part to play in England’s failed 2015 World Cup campaign; he played one match, against Afghanistan, and didn’t bat but picked up two wickets. England’s outlook towards limited-overs cricket, Bopara said, was changing, and T20 was no longer deemed lowbrow.”When T20 first came around, it may have been viewed as a small competition and a just-to-have-fun competition,” Bopara said. “The crowds love it; it brings in money for the teams and for the boards, so we all know it’s very important.”I think England do view Test cricket as the pinnacle of the game. I think a lot of cricketers still do. But things are changing rapidly. We have seen how successful T20 has been, how successful IPL has been, and I think slowly, slowly things will go that way. We obviously don’t want to forget about Test cricket. A lot of cricketers around the world love Test cricket; I don’t think that would change, but there will be more importance on T20 cricket.”Bopara had recently criticised the “institutionalised’ culture of English cricket, speaking of the need to develop braver players. “We need to change the culture and be freer as players, stop worrying about the consequences. We need at times to stop being so English,” he had said.Bopara agreed that neglect of cricket in state-run schools, something many observers of English cricket have railed against for some time, was a problem that needed remedying.”Not enough cricket played around in some of the state schools,” Bopara, who studied in a state school himself, said. “The schools I came from, you know, we didn’t play cricket. You had to create your own cricket team. It would help if we can bring more cricket to those areas.”There is a lot of talent in those areas. There are a lot of Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi cricketers who love the game, and I am pretty sure there could be some superb cricketers coming over from those areas if we focus in there.” Cricket, Bopara said, was instrumental in him being appreciative of a multicultural environment, which in turn was critical to his development as a person.”Coming from an area where I came from, you can be very boxed and live in a certain way. When you get out and you meet other people who do different things, you learn, you eat different foods. Before playing cricket, I never used to eat things like sushi and fish. But I have learnt so much away from the culture that I have come up in. I have developed a sort of multicultural way of living, and again I owe that to cricket.”

Bowled Test-like lines to Rahane – Bhuvneshwar

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s leading wicket-taker, has said bowlers have to be patient with batsmen like Ajinkya Rahane. Against Rajasthan Royals, Bhuvneshwar reaped the benefits of sticking to Test-match like lines and lengths to dismiss Rahane early.”With Rahane, it’s necessary to get the execution absolutely right because he is the kind of batsman who doesn’t go after you but if you give him a poor delivery he will hit it,” Bhuvneshwar told . “My plan was to get him out bowling like I would in a Test match. It was key to get him out because he is the kind of batsman who will play till the end and win them the game. I know what his strengths are and he knows mine. So I was happy to win the patient game.”It wasn’t just the start of the innings where he has had success. Against Royals, Bhuvneshwar came back to dismiss James Faulkner and Sanju Samson in the 18th over to derail the chase.”Bowling at the death and at the beginning is very different,” Bhuvneshwar said. “At the beginning, the batsmen are looking to play normal cricket shots. You can’t afford to bowl bad deliveries, especially with Rahane and Shane Watson. They are the kind of batsmen who will always look for the bad balls. But for death bowling, you have to plan really well because batsmen can play scoops and reverse sweeps, so you have to make plans accordingly. James Faulkner, for example, can hit a low full toss for six. We knew that till Faulkner is there, the game will be tight. So his wicket was very crucial for us.”Bhuvneshwar kept Sunrisers’ hopes for a playoffs spot alive as he helped Sunrisers to a seven-run win over Rajasthan Royals, after he took three wickets to stave off a late surge from the Royals’ middle order. That took his season tally to 16, at an average of 18.62.”You always want to take wickets because that’s how you win games in T20. You have to take the responsibility, especially when you are the leading wicket-taker for a team. I always look to take wickets, especially on wickets such as the one in Brabourne Stadium. There was help initially and later on you have to get your basics right which will get you wickets.”

Carter creates slice of spin-bowling history

Matthew Carter returned the best figures by a debutant offspinner since 1938 as Nottinghamshire heaped more problems upon Somerset at Taunton

On the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta, it was a Carter of a considerably less venerable variety who captured the headlines in the West Country. At the age of 19 years and 20 days, Matthew Carter marked his first-class debut with the magnificent figures of 7 for 56 in 16 overs, to send Somerset hurtling towards their fifth defeat in seven Championship fixtures this season.Bowling his offspinners from a tall classical action with flight, bite and composure, Carter returned the best figures by a spin bowler on Championship debut since Leicestershire’s Jack Walsh claimed 7 for 46 against Northamptonshire in 1938.”The coaching staff said they were all very, very proud,” said Carter. “I couldn’t ask for a better start and the pitch is only going to get worse.”People say they don’t like facing me because of my height, but to get turn is always an added extra. It’s always nice to see a Bunsen, especially on day two.”My first ball was a nervous one, but after that first over was finished I was pretty confident. All the lads were talking to me, making me feel comfortable. It’s a day I’ll never forget.”Carter’s confident start was doubtless allied to his familiarity around the first team, with his elder brother Andy, not selected for this game, left to sweat on his status as the best bowler in the Carter family.”I’m more worried about not being the favourite son!” Andy joked in a Twitter exchange with Nottinghamshire’s better known offspinner, Graeme Swann. “Less snap on my plate on a Sunday.”For all of Carter’s excellence, however, he was aided by another woeful display from Somerset’s middle order who, from the moment that James Hildreth became a notable maiden first-class wicket, squandered the efforts of a promising morning session to lose eight for 88 in the space of 22.1 overs.Somerset rallied to a degree in the evening session as well, restricting Nottinghamshire to 89 for 4 in their second innings, to capture eight wickets for 108 in their day’s work. But the lead is already at 299, and to judge by the turn that Abdur Rehman was obtaining with his left-arm spin, Somerset have already squandered the best batting conditions they will face.”It’s not a position we want to be in, it’s not a position we’ve been in for many years,” said Jason Kerr, Somerset’s bowling coach, acknowledging the very real threat of relegation that is hanging over the club. “But it’s in the middle we need to turn it around. And very quickly, there’s no doubt about that.”Carter’s clatter of wickets came after Nottinghamshire’s other teenage selection, Luke Wood, had followed up his breakthrough performance against Sussex last week with the key top-order scalps of Marcus Trescothick and Johann Myburgh in consecutive overs. Jake Ball, a relative veteran at 24, grabbed the one remaining Somerset wicket, that of Peter Trego for a duck, to highlight once again their opponents’ peculiar reluctance to trust the kids at their disposal. This was especially true given the one unequivocal success story of their day. Tom Abell, the 21-year-old opener, carried his bat and ignored the fearful strokeplay at the other end to finish with a hugely mature 76 not out.A local boy made good, a product of Taunton School and a Wisden Young Cricketer of the Year, Abell was the one player with the confidence and gumption to use his feet to Carter’s spin in a bid to neutralise the threat he posed.”A couple of batsmen are low on confidence at the moment which is a massive thing for batting,” he said. “To be fair [Carter] bowled very well, we found it difficult because they kept taking wickets regularly so we couldn’t build momentum. People were trying to get themselves in, so maybe we could have put more pressure back on him which is something that we can look at. It was a disappointing day with the bat.”Abell’s returns so far this season have been sparse, this was his second and highest fifty in 11 Championship innings to date, but his performance provided further evidence – as if evidence is really needed on a day when Jamie Overton joined his brother Craig in the England squad – of the wealth of talent available to a county in urgent need of generational change.”I’m pretty happy with how I felt,” said Abell. “I’ve been a bit short [of runs] in recent weeks, so it was nice to step up to the plate, but it felt a bit hollow”If we can have a morning like we did this morning, we’ve seen how quickly things can change.”
