Cricket Australia has asked the ICC to explain why Usman Khawaja’s dismissal was upheld after a decision review that appeared to show no evidence that he had edged behind off Graeme Swann.Khawaja was visibly mystified by the outcome of his referral, shaking his head as he walked off following third umpire Kumar Dharmasena’s decision to back Tony Hill’s on-field call of out. There was no mark on Hot Spot and the raw vision, while not conclusive, appeared to suggest that the ball had not made contact with Khawaja’s bat.”Cricket Australia has sought an explanation from the ICC on the dismissal of Usman Khawaja,” Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland said in a statement. “In our view, the on-field decision and referred decision using DRS were both incorrect. CA remains a strong supporter of DRS and believes it is important that cricket continues to improve and build confidence in the DRS.”We understand and accept that from time to time mistakes can be made, however in this instance, on behalf of the player, the team and all cricket fans, we feel duty bound to seek further explanation as to how this decision was arrived at.”The DRS is designed not with the idea of giving the benefit of the doubt to the batsman but the on-field umpire’s call, which meant that Dharmasena had to be completely certain that Hill was wrong in order to overturn the decision. Chris Rogers, who was at the non-striker’s end when the dismissal occurred, said even the England players appeared resigned to Khawaja staying at the crease.”He said he didn’t hit it and I said he didn’t hit it. That was about it,” Rogers said. “I was up the other end. Even in real time I didn’t think he hit it; I didn’t think he was anywhere near it. The umpire must have had a different view on it. I thought it was not out and that’s why we reviewed it. From what we saw on the replays I think even the England guys had given up hope of it being out. It was disappointing and another question-mark.”It’s a weird thing because it’s people’s careers on the line as well, so you want these decisions to be right. I felt for him, but it’s been happening so we’ve just got to get on with it and not worry about that and try to have a good day.”Rogers said despite the apparent error costing Khawaja his innings, there was still a place for technology in assisting umpires. “I still think it’s important,” he said. “We want technology to make sure these decisions are correct. Sometimes it goes for you and sometimes it goes against you. You just have to take it.”

These are tough old times for Marcus Trescothick. The batsman who has scored runs for fun throughout most of his career failed again as Somerset once more found themselves up against it in a Championship match.Almost unbelievably, the former England opener is still looking for his first first-class century of the season and his average, after 22 innings, is now down to 27.Trescothick must have come into this contest with high hopes. Not only did he confirm his recovery from an ankle injury, which saw him miss several T20 games, by playing for the seconds against MCC Universities on Wednesday and Thursday but he also indicated that his touch and timing were back in decent order by taking a double-hundred off the students.When it came to facing Nottinghamshire’s new-ball pair of Luke Fletcher and Harry Gurney, however, the now 37-year-old opener simply could not get going. He was watchful, gave himself a good ticking off after playing and missing on at least one occasion, but couldn’t find the one flowing drive that might have set him free.In fairness, Fletcher and Gurney deserved plenty of credit for keeping things so tight that only nine runs came from their first seven overs. And then, midway, through the eighth, left-armer Gurney forced Trescothick to push at one holding its line just outside off stump and the resulting edge was snaffled, low down, by Steven Mullaney at third slip.Off went the home captain to sympathetic applause. But a 27-ball, 29-minute innings of 2 had merely added to Trescothick’s string of low scores – a string that has seen him reach 50 on just four occasions this campaign.There are still five and a half Championship matches left, of course. And an on-song Trescothick could do a lot of damage in 11 innings. At the moment, though, there is no doubt he is struggling, and it doesn’t make pleasant viewing for anyone who has enjoyed seeing him at his commanding best.At least an early wicket did not prompt a Somerset collapse. That would have been a real sickener for home supporters who had already witnessed Notts’ last two wickets adding 108 highly damaging runs.Nick Compton and Chris Jones combined for an unbeaten 61 before the second of two heavy downpours resulted in play being abandoned for the day at 4pm. Jones, who scored a century against the Australians on this ground a few weeks ago, was the more fluent of the two although he was almost caught at short leg, off the face of the bat, for 32 soon after spinner Samit Patel entered the attack.Fletcher and Gurney had set the tone for Notts even before they got to work with the ball. The latter joined Fletcher during the first over of the day after Ajmal Shahzad had lost his off stump to Peter Trego when playing no shot.But if Somerset thought their job was done in the field with the ending of a 57-run stand, the visitors’ tenth-wicket pair made them think again. With Gurney looking anything but a rabbit at No. 11, Fletcher pulled and drove his way to a run-a-ball half-century (his second fifty of the season) and added eight more runs before gloving an attempted hook against Jamie Overton.With more rain forecast for Sunday, Somerset should not lose this game. But a team third from bottom wants to be thinking of winning matches at this stage of the season, not hanging on for draws.

Riding on an accomplished century, Samit Patel took the opportunity to hit out at the England selectors at being overlooked for international duty since February.After play ended following Patel’s fourth century of the season, he expressed his satisfaction with his form throughout the summer and said he was “shocked and disappointed” to have been overlooked by England since the second T20 against New Zealand in Hamilton.Patel said that he had been told by national selector Geoff Miller to be more consistent, which he thought was “harsh”, and believes that his statistics since then have been compelling.”All I can do is get hundreds here,” he said. “Actually I’m very disappointed that England haven’t been in contact in any format of the game. I’m very shocked and surprised but I think that’s the way it goes. My stats at the end of the year should get me back in that team.”I just got told I wasn’t consistent enough, which I thought was very wrong, very harsh. Geoff said I wasn’t consistent, which I wasn’t happy about. It’s unfair but you’ve just got to get on with it. Hopefully with my stats in white-ball cricket this year, I don’t think they can ignore that for too much longer.”Patel is a curious case. He’s played 59 games for England across all the formats, and his statistics stack up well, but sadly he is perhaps best known for doubts about his fitness. But there were no doubts about his fitness here or, indeed, throughout 2013. During his innings on day two he passed 1,000 first class runs for the season for the second time, and while Michael Lumb and James Taylor have marginally better batting averages for Nottinghamshire, neither can match his weight of runs. Pradeep Sangwan, the Delhi and Kolkata Knight Riders seamer, has been banned for a period of 18 months from taking part in any BCCI-run event for violating the anti-doping regulations during IPL 2013. The BCCI-appointed anti-doping panel found that Sangwan’s sample showed the presence of stanozolol, a prohibited steroid.Sangwan’s ineligibility period has already commenced, from May 6 2013, and will expire on November 5, 2014. The seamer had failed a random dope test conducted during IPL 2013.AN Sharma, Sangwan’s first coach, had said in July this year, the problem could have arisen due to treatment Sangwan was receiving for a shoulder problem. “Since he had no time to consult or visit the BCCI doctor, he saw a local doctor, who gave him an injection,” he had said then. “There was instant relief from the pain thereafter and he also managed to play the IPL.” But Sharma had reiterated that players should be careful about such treatments.Random tests are conducted during the IPL, like in ICC tournaments. The BCCI, which doesn’t come under the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) or the NADA (National Anti-Doping Agency), follow their own anti-doping procedures.Sangwan, 22, played only two matches for Knight Riders this season and failed to pick up a wicket. He made his first-class debut in 2007 and has played 38 matches for Delhi.
