Kent cruise through the rain

Kent kept their Clydesdale Bank 40 campaign alive with a nine-wicket Group C victory over Derbyshire under the Duckworth-Lewis method

31-Jul-2012
ScorecardKent kept their Clydesdale Bank 40 campaign alive with a nine-wicket Group C victory over Derbyshire under the Duckworth-Lewis method. The floodlit match was delayed by nearly four hours by rain, reducing the contest to 14 overs a side but, after Derbyshire made 62 for 5, Kent were left with a target of 67 and got home with 19 balls to spare. Rob Key fell to Mark Turner for 17 but Sam Billings and Sam Northeast easily took the Spitfires to a victory that gives them a chance of claiming the best runners-up spot. The Falcons had reached 22 without loss after being put in but there was assistance for the seamers on an overcast evening and it was no surprise when Chesney Hughes edged a drive at one from Matt Coles that moved away and was caught behind for 11.Usman Khawaja went in the next over when he chopped Azhar Mahmood into his leg stump and Wes Durston became the third batsman to fall for 11 when he was caught behind pushing forward at Darren Stevens. Derbyshire captain Wayne Madsen became Stevens’ second victim when he was bowled through a big gap with the total on 46 but that was the last action for nearly three-and-three-quarter hours as the rain set in.The game was able to resume at 9.15pm with the Falcons left with one over to boost their total and after Dan Redfern was run out off the first ball going for a second, Jon Clare hit James Tredwell high over midwicket for six. He then swung the spinner for another four and finished unbeaten having joined the massed ranks on 11.Alex Hughes clubbed another boundary as 16 came off the over to leave Kent chasing a revised target of 67 but the advantage was still very much with the visitors, especially with the bowlers having to contend with a wet ball.Billings and Key knew they did not have to take any risks but 23 came off the first three overs to dash the slim hopes of the home side, who had to take early wickets to exert any pressure.Key pulled Mark Turner for his third four but was then caught behind down the leg side off the next ball for 17 with the total on 39. But Kent needed only 24 off the last seven overs and although Derbyshire bowled tightly, the outcome was never in doubt. Northeast sealed victory in the 11th over with consecutive fours off David Wainwright to give Kent a chance of making the semi-finals.

Prince, Horton try to make amends

Lancashire, desperately trying to stave off relegation a year after winning the Championship, made amends for a sloppy first day in the field with a professional display with the bat at Lord’s. But midway through the match, their task remained a daunting one as they faced a first-innings deficit of 210 runs, with seven wickets in hand. After negotiating a tricky first half of the day, which began by wrapping up the Middlesex innings, Ashwell Prince and Paul Horton piled on the runs in the latter part of the day, sharing a partnership of 130 that owed as much to their patience and application as it did to Middlesex’s tactical lethargy.Neil Dexter added only two to his overnight score before Chapple had him caught behind. The Lancashire captain then accounted for the wickets of Toby Roland-Jones and Ravi Patel, to complete his five-wicket haul, while Ajmal Shahzad tempted Steve Crook (66) to edge an out-swinger to Horton at first slip. This will not be one of Chapple’s most memorable five-fors, but it helped to quell any lower-order resistance that would have further frustrated Lancashire.Their reply started cautiously, reflecting the fact that they need to take as many points from this game as possible. Tom Smith took over opening duties from Horton, who had injured his hand dropping Crook two overs before he atoned for his error, and Smith managed to negotiate testing conditions to take Lancashire into lunch unscathed.Collymore plugged away after the interval, pushing the ball across the two left-handers, drawing a couple of edges that fell short of the slips. Whenever he strayed onto their pads, he was tucked away for runs. The Barbadian tea-pot made several appearances. This may well be Collymore’s last game for Middlesex and there were moments when he seemed to give it his all. He was either putting in the effort in the hope of securing a new deal or looking to end his stay on a high.At fine-leg, he had to be coaxed into drinking a protein shake handed to him by one of the Middlesex coaches. Eventually, he obliged, taking the flask on to the field with him, swigging from it between Gareth Berg’s deliveries, leaving it on the field, behind him, when walking in. Five penalty runs were there if Procter and Smith wanted them, but instead they stuck to their leg glances, cuts and leaves to take Lancashire to 52 without loss after 20 overs.Smith looked the more fluent of the two as he reached his half-century off 86 balls, while Procter dug in at the other end. However, both fell in quick succession. Procter gloved a Crook delivery that seemed to bounce more than he expected, while Smith fell to the left-arm spin of Ravi Patel.Patel, a big turner of the ball, was happy to give it some air, using his quicker delivery sparingly. You would forgive a young spinner for settling for a flatter trajectory in a bid to get through his overs with minimal fuss, but Patel backed his drift, manipulating his line before having Smith stumped as he coaxed him out of his crease with a subtle change of length. Ashwell Prince and Horton set about seeing the day out, well aware that while Lancashire could not win the match in the evening session, they could certainly lose it.Patel found himself under pressure holding up the Media Centre end, while Chris Rogers rotated Roland-Jones, Berg and Crook at the other end, to little effect. Roland-Jones will be particularly disappointed to have not made a dent in the Lancashire batting order after winning the FTI Most Valuable Player award for August. In the end it was Crook who broke the partnership, removing Horton, giving Karl Brown six overs to negotiate before close.Provided Lancashire can get through tomorrow’s morning session – the new ball will be available three overs – a first-innings lead is not impossible. But for that, they will probably need a big score from Prince.

Sydney Sixers in final after nailbiter

Fortunes ebbed and flowed in true Twenty20 style in Centurion, as Sydney Sixers scripted a final-ball jailbreak to set up a title clash with Lions on Sunday

Fortunes ebbed and flowed in true Twenty20 style in Centurion, as Sydney Sixers scripted a final-ball jailbreak to set up a title clash with Lions on Sunday. It was a heartbreak for the home fans, who showed up to cheer for Titans, and for the rest of the country, who would have hoped for an all-South Africa final. In a tournament that hasn’t seen too many of the high scores normally associated with this format, a target of 164 was always going to be a challenge. Sixers were the form team, coming into the semis unbeaten, and seemed best equipped in all departments to overhaul any challenge thrown at them.It was still anybody’s game in the final over, with Sixers needing eight with three wickets in hand. Titans captain Martin van Jaarsveld gambled by tossing the ball to CJ de Villiers, who had had an ordinary night leaking 26 off his first two overs. Ben Rohrer was adventurous enough to paddle-scoop the first ball but could fetch only a couple. He scooped the second ball straight to mid-off but crucially in those few seconds, Pat Cummins – who blitzed a six the previous over – crossed and shielded the new batsman from facing. The following ball cost Titans as de Villiers sprayed it too wide of the off stump and was penalised. Cummins heaved the next to deep midwicket, survived a run-out appeal and picked up two more. He stole a leg bye, exposed Mitchell Starc who couldn’t put away a short ball but also managed to sneak a leg bye. There were memories of Johannesburg 2011, when Cummins snatched a Test win for Australia with the bat. He did it again this time when he swung and missed, but it didn’t hurt Sixers as the wicketkeeper Heino Kuhn was way off the mark with his throw and, despite a collision with the bowler amid the frenzy, Cummins managed to crawl to the other end to secure a thriller.A nailbiter seemed unlikely after the electric start provided by the openers Michael Lumb and Steve O’Keefe, who was in his makeshift role due to Shane Watson’s departure to Australia. The pair added 54 in just under five overs with clean hits, each boundary met by a hush from the crowd. The first eight overs contained at least one boundary. The ninth was the start of Titans’ comeback, via their spinners. Eden Links clean bowled O’Keefe for 32 and the following over by Roelof van der Merwe produced two wickets, including a run-out. It was the first of two communication breakdowns in Sixers’ innings – Steve Smith and Nic Maddinson found themselves stranded on two separate occasions and Sixers had slipped from 85 for 1 after eight overs to 115 for 5 after 13.Van der Merwe came back well after being caned in his opening over but a couple of meaty blows by Moises Henriques narrowed the equation. The match see-sawed again when Henriques and Nathan McCullum fell off consecutive balls, and it came down to Cummins to secure the highest-successful chase in this edition of the tournament. That the match even had a competitive ring to it though was thanks to contrasting half-centuries by two Titans batsmen with similar sounding names. Henry Davids batted through the innings with 59 off 44 balls while David Wiese made the most of his relatively short stint with an unbeaten 61 off 28 balls.Titans were at an underwhelming 91 for 5 after 16 overs, desperate for a push. Wiese began his onslaught by lofting Cummins high over midwicket and in the same over fetched back-to-back fours to take 15 off the over. It was a sign of things to come as Wiese bludgeoned consecutive sixes over the on side off Henriques in an over that leaked 23. They ransacked 72 off the last four overs and Wiese brought up the tournament’s fastest fifty – off 25 balls – to give Sixers something to think about. In the end it was fitting that Sixers, the most dominant side in the competition, made the final.

Smith, Haddin take Blues into lead

A measured innings by Steve Smith and a punchy one by Brad Haddin helped guide New South Wales to first innings points over Queensland on day two of the Sheffield Shield match

Scorecard
A measured innings by Steve Smith and a punchy one by Brad Haddin helped guide New South Wales to first innings points over Queensland on day two of the Sheffield Shield match in Canberra. After Doug Bollinger’s four wickets helped tip out the Bulls for 243, the Blues stumbled to 4 for 109 before Haddin added 125 with Smith to take their side to the cusp of the lead. While Haddin perished when swinging Nathan Hauritz to deep midwicket on 73, Smith held his nerve and his wicket, forming a useful stand with the captain Steve O’Keefe that has the chance to grow with the NSW lead on the third morning.Smith’s maturity was demonstrated by the pacing of his innings, playing the reserved partner to Haddin before expanding his array of strokes later on in the company of O’Keefe. Hauritz and Luke Feldman grabbed two wickets apiece for the Bulls.
