Pollard special not enough for West Indies

India completed a fantastic year as far as home one-day internationals are concerned with another victory over West Indies in a topsy-turvy ODI, on a sweltering day in Chennai, to make the series scoreline 4-1.The focus in dead rubbers is usually on fringe players auditioning for bigger roles, and plenty took centre-stage at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Manoj Tiwary stated his case for a permanent place in an increasingly crowded India middle-order with his maiden one-day century and Kieron Pollard played his finest international innings without managing to complete a herculean task after West Indies’ top order did its familiar house-of-cards impersonation. Those two were the headliners but there were significant contributions from other players scrapping for a place. Andre Russell showed why he should be an automatic pick for West Indies, legspinner Rahul Sharma displayed great accuracy and a cool head in only his second international match and Irfan Pathan caused plenty of excitement with his famous inswingers with the new ball.India were missing their four biggest ODI batting stars but that didn’t prevent their next generation, led by Tiwary and Virat Kohli, from piling on 267 for 6 on a slow-and-low track. Then West Indies’ batting floundered against an attack that featured at most one player who would make India’s first-choice XI.Irfan swung out Lendl Simmons first ball, and added the wicket of Kieran Powell soon after. Abhimanyu Mithun, one of the quick bowlers selected ahead of Irfan for the Test series in Australia, also took two wickets with the new ball. When Denesh Ramdin was adjudged lbw in the 16th over, the game seemed over as West Indies slumped to 78 for 5.Pollard thought otherwise. The slow surface in Chennai is not suited to Pollard’s explosive style of batting but that did not prevent him from stroking some effortless sixes down the ground. The one shot he did put some power behind, in the 16th over, cleared not just the rope but the stands as well, landing on the roof over long-on. There were very few slogs in his entire innings; virtually all of his the sixes were hit with a straight bat.Keeping him company in an attempted revival was Russell, who has already shown his hitting skills several times. He matched Pollard stroke-for-stroke in a boundary-filled stand of 89 runs for the sixth wicket. Caribbean flair may be an old cliché but there was plenty of it in Russell’s batting, highlighted by a flick for six over midwicket off Rahul Sharma. He bustled to his 50 off just 37 balls, outpacing even Pollard, though he did get two reprieves from wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel. It was an athletic bit of fielding that broke the partnership that threatened to take the game away from India. Gautam Gambhir pounced on a Pollard dab towards short third man and scored a direct hit to run out Russell, who carried on running to the pavilion. Sammy failed once again but that still didn’t stop Pollard from believing. He farmed the strike and sprinkled in the odd nonchalant six in what was easily the longest innings of his international career. His wait for a first international hundred seemed set to be extended when he thumped Rahul Sharma to Kohli at long-on when on 99, but Kohli shelled the straightforward chance. With only the final wicket remaining, a rain of boundaries followed from Pollard before one mis-hit ended the game; he holed out to Ajinkya Rahane at long-off to leave West Indies 34 runs short. If that was a special innings from Pollard, there was an important one from Tiwary earlier. It was Tiwary’s first opportunity of the series, and he came in with a charged-up Kemar Roach on a hat-trick, three balls into the match. It was only his sixth game for India in nearly four years, spread across four different series. He had never made a hundred even in domestic one-dayers, and his previous highest score in internationals was 24.He was greeted by a sharp bouncer from Roach, but grew more assured as the innings progressed. A couple of eye-catching off-drives early on eased his nerves, before he started picking off plenty of leg-side boundaries off the spinners. He first steadied the innings through an 83-run stand with Gambhir, whose 31 had a mix of sharp singles and panicky running. That didn’t prove a setback for India though, as Virat Kohli gave another example of his increasing ease at the international level. He worked risk-free singles off seven of his first eight deliveries, and opened up once he got used to the pace and bounce of the track. Kohli and Tiwary put on 43 runs in a five-over spell starting from the 27th over. It was not even the Powerplay and was supposed to be part of the ‘boring’ middle overs with the field spread out.Tiwary had been cramping towards the end of his innings, and retired soon after reaching his century. Kohli became the highest ODI run-getter of the year and marched on towards his fifth one-day century of the year, but spooned a catch to long-off on 80.The final stages of the Indian innings showed how difficult a surface it was to score on. Only three boundaries were hit in the final ten overs, as Sunil Narine proved hard to read, and Anthony Martin and Marlon Samuels didn’t offer any freebies. The damage had already been done though, and despite Pollard’s best efforts, West Indies couldn’t reduce the margin of defeat in the series, which was far more closely contested than the 4-1 scoreline suggests.

New Zealand in unexpected command

New Zealand find themselves in an unexpectedly commanding position following an eventful second day of the second Test

Smart stats

Australia’s 136 is their third-lowest total against New Zealand, and their lowest at home.

The top five batsmen in the first innings of both teams totalled 97, which is the fourth-lowest ever in a Test in Australia, and the lowest since 1979.

It’s the sixth time Australia have been dismissed for 150 or fewer runs in a Test innings in the last two years. In the five previous years, they’d never been bowled out for under 150.

The last time New Zealand bowled out a team other than Bangladesh or Zimbabwe for a sub-150 score in an away game was way back in June 2002 in Barbados, when West Indies were bundled out for 107.

New Zealand took the first-innings lead in a Test in Australia for the first time since Perth in 2001.

New Zealand find themselves in an unexpectedly commanding position following an eventful second day of the second Test, in which Australia’s batsmen failed utterly to cope with a difficult though not unplayable Hobart pitch. The visitors battled to 3 for 139 and a lead of 153 by the close, after their seam attack had rumbled Australia out for 136 in reply to what had been thought an inadequate 150. Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson played with fierce resolve and positive intent, though New Zealand’s captain should have been out for 14 when he skewered Michael Hussey to gully. Phillip Hughes, enduring a most unfortunate match, could not hold on.Hussey’s slow medium accounted for Jesse Ryder via a superlative legside stumping by Brad Haddin, but it was the last of 12 wickets on day two as New Zealand reached a vantage point from which they can glimpse a first Test victory in Australia since 1985.Led by Chris Martin’s unstinting bounce, movement and accuracy, all the visitors’ bowlers had moments to enjoy in the morning as Australia briefly stared at the possibility of being bowled out for less than 100 for the fourth time in 18 months, and the third in the space of a year. Peter Siddle and James Pattinson produced the most substantial partnership of the innings from the depths of 7 for 75, but could not prevent New Zealand from gaining an unexpected first innings lead of 14.Usman Khawaja and Michael Clarke fought hardest among the batsmen, who were all found woefully deficient against the moving ball. Following Martin’s example, Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Doug Bracewell each found a hint of deviation either way to exploit Australian vulnerability. Boult pouched three wickets on debut and impressed with his subtle swing and sustained line.Resuming at 1 for 12, Khawaja and David Warner played and missed often amid pushing a few runs, and New Zealand were given the early impression they were well and truly in the contest. This notion was confirmed when Warner walked into a drive at Martin and edged succinctly to first slip.Ricky Ponting walked to the middle in a Hobart Test for the first time since his double century against Pakistan in 2010, intent on another score of heft. One or two crisp connections suggested he was in good touch, but he was soon made to look as foolish by Southee as Graham Gooch used to be at the hands of Terry Alderman.Expecting Southee’s stock outswinger, Ponting shaped to leave, but realised too late that the ball was whirring in at middle stump. A panicked swipe of the bat across his front pad was far too late to avoid an lbw so plumb the Ponting was walking well in advance of the umpire Nigel Llong’s raised finger.Khawaja had fought the kind of vigil endured by Brendon McCullum on day one, his bat probing at thin air as often as it struck the ball. Eventually the accumulation of pressure told, Martin extracting the edge he had long threatened to find to dismiss Khawaja for the first single figure score of his young Test career.Michaels Hussey and Clarke had been Australia’s most reliable duo in recent Tests, and for 23 runs they offered promise of a resurgence. But Daniel Vettori’s hamstring strain had afforded the visitors a fourth seamer, and Boult responded to Hussey’s commanding pull stroke by having the batsman pouched behind when trying to leave the next ball. Not one for obstinate defence, Haddin drove impulsively to wide mid-off, another stroke he will wish to forget following the ugly smear against South Africa in Cape Town. Clarke’s resistance, by far the most prolonged and effective of any member of the top six, was ended when he allowed a Bracewell delivery to pluck out off stump – redemption for the bowler after a similar dismissal of Clarke in Brisbane was overruled by a no-ball.Siddle and Pattinson had taken the new ball together on day one, but they would not have expected to be accompanying each other to lunch on the second, still a long way short of New Zealand’s humble tally. Through a combination of shrewd shots and straighter bats than many of the full-time batsmen had managed, they added 56.Eventually Siddle let his guard down and edged Bracewell to third slip. Pattinson immediately flashed at Boult and fell victim to a sharp snaffle by Williamson in the gully, before Starc was lbw on referral to the third umpire Aleem Dar.Neither Pattinson nor Siddle bowled well in the 10 overs to tea, and Clarke swung them to opposite ends on resumption with immediate effect. For the third time in as many innings Pattinson found a corking delivery to touch McCullum’s outside edge, and next over Martin Guptill admonished himself fiercely for flirting at Siddle when he could have left well alone.Ryder did not suggest permanence at any stage but reached 16 before he wandered out of his crease in trying to flick Hussey away, and Haddin capitalised. Ryder exchanged words with Ponting before his departure, but Australia’s fire would be doused by Taylor and Williamson.Taylor has endured a difficult time on this tour, and he played in a self-denying manner reminiscent of Dean Brownlie to build a stand. Williamson showed a sound back-foot game and a greater range of strokes than he had managed in three fretful innings previously.

Cowan, Marsh, Hilfenhaus named for Boxing Day

Ed Cowan has barged his way into Australia’s Boxing Day Test team to face India through weight of runs, and will be joined by Shaun Marsh provided the West Australian can prove his fitness

Ed Cowan, the Tasmania opening batsman currently among the runs, has been picked for Australia’s Boxing Day Test team to face India and will be joined in the top three by Shaun Marsh provided the West Australian can prove his fitness.Ben Hilfenhaus has also earned a recall, the selectors seeking an experienced head to help a young bowling attack battle India’s batsmen at the MCG.Cowan and Marsh replaced Phillip Hughes and Usman Khawaja from the XI that was beaten by New Zealand in Hobart, with Shane Watson and Ryan Harris unable to be chosen due to continued fitness complaints.Watson aggravated a calf problem on day one of the team’s batting camp in Melbourne, while Harris indicated he was short of the required conditioning after returning to cricket for the Brisbane Heat in last night’s BBL match at the Gabba.Australia Test squad

Michael Clarke (capt), Ed Cowan, David Warner, Shaun Marsh, Ricky Ponting, Michael Hussey, Daniel Christian, Brad Haddin, Peter Siddle, James Pattinson, Ben Hilfenhaus, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon

John Inverarity, the national selector, said Cowan would open the batting, with Marsh and Daniel Christian to vie for one spot and Hilfenhaus and Mitchell Starc the other.”Ed has been in wonderful form, and the intention is that he will open the batting with David Warner,” Inverarity said. “Of the XI that will line up on December 26, it will either be Shaun Marsh or Daniel Christian.”It is likely if Shaun plays that he’ll be batting at No. 3, if Daniel plays then he’d be at No. 6 and the batting line-up would be re-arranged accordingly, and then it would seem likely that one of Mitchell Starc and Ben Hilfenhaus would be 12th man. That’s the anticipated balance of the side but we’ll have to wait on weather and pitch conditions and final form and fitness.”Inverarity said Marsh’s need to show his back can stand up to the rigours of a Test match caused the naming of a 13-man squad.”The NSP has named 13 players due to the ongoing uncertainty about the fitness of Shaun Marsh,” Inverarity said. “Shane Watson was not considered for selection as he has not recovered sufficiently from his injury. Ryan Harris has not yet achieved the volume of bowling required to be available for consideration for Test selection.”Ed Cowan has been in excellent form in recent weeks. His inclusion is in recognition of his consistently good performances and we anticipate that he can provide steadiness at the top of the order. Ben Hilfenhaus has regained form this season and he provides a strong and reliable bowling option.”We see both Phillip Hughes and Usman Khawaja as developing players with bright futures and remaining as players of significance. They are determined young men and I know that they will work hard to produce compelling performances and push strongly for further consideration.”Since turning around an indifferent start to the season with an unbeaten 91 in a limited overs match against South Australia in Burnie in mid-November, Cowan’s scores have been 4, 134*, 145, 10, 65, 145* and 109 in the first innings of the tour match against the Indians. His strong form has been mirrored by Hilfenhaus, who has shown greater snap and swing this summer, most recently for Hobart in the Twenty20 competition, after he looked innocuous at times against England during last summer’s Ashes series. He was also considered close to selection for the New Zealand series, though the selectors ultimately decided to test out a younger attack as a precursor to India’s visit.”Ben Hilfenhaus is in very good form,” Inverarity said. “I think he had a few body concerns and his action deteriorated a little bit last year and he seems to have got it back and been playing in very good form. He is a strong, durable, experienced bowler.”It [the T20 match in Perth] certainly wasn’t a negative, he bowled very well, but we’ve been considering Ben for some weeks and he provides a strong, durable experienced option for us.”Watson’s case is more problematic, as he has now suffered a trio of fitness problems since the start of the South Africa tour. Inverarity said the panel was hopeful Watson would be fit to play in the second Test of the India series in Sydney.”Shane is not fit to play. He’s had ongoing troubles with his calf,” Inverarity said. “The situation is improving and we hope he’ll be in contention for the second Test in Sydney. But he’s not available to play this game. It is an option for him to bat down the order, yes. The word from Shane Watson was that he was not fit to play. I wasn’t in Melbourne yesterday but he spoke at length with Mickey Arthur and the word was he’s not ready.”Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey remain part of the Test team despite poor displays in Hobart and advancing years, Inverarity speaking of their value to the dressing room as a critical factor in their continued retention.”They’ve both been wonderful cricketers, they are wonderful cricketers, and terrific men and provide a lot for the side,” he said. “We all on the selection panel are keen for them to do well. We’re hoping they have a breakthrough in the next week or two. They offer a tremendous amount to the side.”

Luan abriu o placar para o Tricolor gaúcho ainda no primeiro tempo e o jovem Lincoln, no último lance, deixou tudo igual: 1 a 1.

LEI DO EX INDIRETA?

A PRIMEIRA VEZ

LINCOLN BRILHA NO FIM

Haddin on ice for early ODIs

Brad Haddin is set to be stood down from the first bracket of the triangular ODI series against India and Sri Lanka

Brad Haddin, Australia’s senior wicketkeeper and acting vice-captain, is set to be stood down from the first bracket of the triangular ODI series against India and Sri Lanka, affording the Victoria gloveman Matthew Wade another chance to press his case.Wade will be behind the stumps in the two Twenty20 matches against India in Sydney and Melbourne this week, following Haddin’s international T20 retirement, but he is now expected to also take the role for the first three limited-overs matches by being named in the ODI squad to be announced on Monday.Haddin was due for a rest after playing across the home Test summer, though his questionable form was only just starting to trend back up in Adelaide following some difficult days against New Zealand and India. He is understood to be enthusiastic about playing for New South Wales in a pair of fixtures against Tasmania in Hobart, the first a domestic one-day match on Saturday, with a Sheffield Shield game to follow Monday to Thursday. Those matches would give Haddin the chance to build on the starts he made with the bat in the final India Test.Though there has been much speculation about his future this summer, Haddin remains a highly valued member of the Australian team, and a capable lieutenant for the captain Michael Clarke.Haddin and Clarke have formed a strong leadership duo in the absence of Shane Watson, with the wicketkeeper providing plenty of advice in the field as well as offering a strong voice in the dressing room. His contribution to the team is being measured as much by those attributes as by his performances on the field, which lurched into dire territory earlier in the season before improving. He may remain Clarke’s deputy for some matches to come given the doubts still swirling around Watson’s fitness.Pat Howard, the team performance manager, has said the selectors’ criteria for choosing players include leadership and other additions to the team. The successful Tasmania captain George Bailey’s selection as the national Twenty20 captain provided another example of their thinking.”You need sufficient skills to be within the frame, obviously. No one is picked if they don’t perform to be recognised for their core skills,” Howard said. “But then the selection panel [also] considers their contribution to the team, the effect those players are having on the team – are they coming from winning teams? All those things are important to assess what impact those players are having. And obviously John [Inverarity] being able to sit down with the players to hear about who the good leaders are in other teams and getting feedback can add so much to your selection decisions.”Ricky Ponting has spoken about the value people add outside their core skill. Be it their fielding, be it their character and the sort of leadership they produce, and how much they give to a side. To me, it is fantastic to see players supported [by each other]. You see David Warner score a hundred and the batsman at the other end [Ed Cowan] comes up and embraces him because he sees him as an important part of the team. Inverarity talks about adding to the pot more than you’re taking out, and he looks for those characters that add to that team environment.”
