Ireland were given a rude awakening by Scotland at the Grange, as their oldest rivals showed them that they can no longer rest on their laurels as No. 1 Associate nation.Despite scoring their third-highest ODI score, Ireland slipped to a five-wicket defeat with nine balls to spare. It ended a run of seven limited-over wins in succession for Ireland over Scotland, and gave the latter the Celtic-nations bragging rights for now.On an excellent batting pitch, Scotland made nonsense of the form book and history books as they chased 321 to win. Ireland’s bowlers never found their length and were put to the sword by some breath-taking batting.Richie Berrington’s 56 off 23 balls was the final blow, but the opening stand of 129 between Kyle Coetzer (89) and Fraser Watts (54) set Scotland on their way as Boyd Rankin and Trent Johnston misfired. It was quite a shock to most of the vibrant Edinburgh crowd, who had seen Paul Stirling’s third century in four ODIs spur Ireland to a commanding 320 for 8 earlier. Stirling’s thunderous innings of 113 was backed up by a typically-measured 71 by Alex Cusack and a breezy fifty by Andrew Poynter.Stirling was perhaps stirred into belligerent style – his hundred came up in 83 balls – by a communication from his county. Middlesex told him to report to the second XI at the conclusion of this tournament, as his services would not be required this week by the first team.Stirling was given every assistance by the home bowlers, who squandered the toss by bowling far too short and wide of the stumps. Scotland’s raw opening bowler, Safyaan Sharif, saw a six and a four disappear off Stirling’s bat over cover in his first over, before William Porterfield took consecutive boundaries off his third. The Irish opening stand sailed past fifty in the ninth over, before a bowling change brought Scotland a breakthrough. Porterfield tried to hit Josh Davey over the top and instead skied to Coetzer at mid-on. Cusack joined Stirling, and settled into his favoured role of second fiddle.Stirling raced to his fifty off 45 balls as the 100 was raised in 18.2 overs. Scotland skipper Gordon Drummond made frequent changes as bowler after bowler failed to quell Stirling and Cusack.By the 22nd over he was on to his seventh bowler, Kyle Coetzer, but he was whipped out of the attack when his third over was plundered by Stirling. The second ball sailed into the crowd at extra cover, and three balls later he disappeared into the distance, the ball still rising as it flew over the wall surrounding the picturesque Grange ground.Stirling raised his century off 83 balls in the 28th over, and had time for a sixth six before he fell to Majid Haq. In the absence of Niall O’Brien, Andrew Poynter took a rare chance toshow his class, and pulled and swept powerfully while Cusack continued to accumulate.Poynter’s fifty came up in 33 balls. He perished at the hands of the eighth bowler Drummond used, South African-born Preston Mommsen. The innocuous-looking offspinner kept his lines tight and picked up 3 for 26 off five tidy overs. His second scalp was Kevin O’Brien, who was surprised by the bounce of the first ball he received, which he proceeded to steer into the diving, outstretched hand of Majid Haq at short third man.The Irish lower middle order is well-practised in finishing an innings, and Gary Wilson and Trent Johnston ensured the total reached 320.But some stirring batting from Scotland made the target look innocuous. Trent Johnston laboured hard, but his lack of match-practice told. In the last ten weeks he has bowled just 25 overs, all for Ireland, as he has been forbidden by Cricket Ireland from turning his arm over for his club Railway Union .George Dockrelll ended the opening stand when Watts missed a sweep, but the Somerset youngster never settled and bowled his ten overs in five spells. Coetzer continued his purple patch, getting his fourth consecutive ODI half-century, and equalling his career-best score of 89, set two weeks ago against Netherlands. He fell to Rankin who got a pearler to take the top of off stump.Berrington took up the baton however and a blistering batting Powerplay of 65 runs ensured victory was comfortably secured. He hit six sixes, most of them over the tennis courts into Arboretum Avenue.Ireland coach Phil SImmons said he was “disappointed rather than angry” at his charges. “Its the sort of kick they need sometimes,” he said. “They need to learn not to underestimate anybody.”They did it last week against Namibia and got away with it. But today we lost intensity and its hard to get momentum back when that happens.”When Ireland beat England in Bangalore during the World Cup, they celebrated in the team hotel by singing “Are You Scotland in Disguise?” as they encountered the England players. As the Scotland players celebrated in their dressing room last night, one wag was tempted to lead them in a chorus of “Are You England in Disguise?”

Experimentation was the order of the day in Ireland, but England are likely to have a far more familiar squad for the one-day internationals against India

Experimentation was the order of the day in Ireland, but England are likely to have a far more familiar squad for the one-day internationals against India and there’s the possibility that none of the new faces tried in Clontarf will find a place. With Alastair Cook having won his first series as the full-time ODI captain against Sri Lanka it is unlikely that the selectors will make many changes for the 50-over format, although Stuart Broad’s Twenty20 side could see some of the new players feature. There will be no debate about James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Tim Bresnan and Graeme Swann forming the core of the bowling attack. Broad was dropped for England’s last one-dayer against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford but has since stormed back to form with a Man-of-the-Series display in the Test series against India. Those four bowlers, along with Jade Dernbach, will comprise the first-choice attack unless conditions require two spinners, when Samit Patel will need to be accommodated. The bigger question marks surround the batting line-up. The recent form of Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell suggests they will walk into the side but for both Test success and one-day runs don’t always correlate. Pietersen’s 50-over record since losing the captaincy is poor with an average of 22.86, while Bell struggled to adapt to the No. 6 role against Sri Lanka. Pietersen was dropped this time last year for the Pakistan series and, although such drastic action is unlikely this time, he really needs to prove he has the hunger for the 50-over game.Bell, meanwhile, remains a conundrum because No. 6 is an unnatural fit for him but there is no room higher up the order. Ideally, given his wonderful form, he would be given a run at No. 3 but his Warwickshire team-mate Jonathan Trott has bedded into that position. Trott’s role remains highly debated, and his 69 off 104 balls against Ireland fuelled the fire. All the same, it’s hard to imagine England being World Cup contenders in Australia and New Zealand with him and Cook in the top three.”He’s an invaluable player to our team and has been for the couple of years he’s been involved,” Eoin Morgan said after the 11-run victory against Ireland. “Today he was crucial to our success and the majority of time he scores runs we win.”There is a clamour to get the likes of James Taylor and Ben Stokes involved in the side, but Geoff Miller and Andy Flower are not in the habit of shaking things up too much. Morgan and Richard Halsall, who stood in as coach for Flower against Ireland, will give feedback to the selectors about the match but it’s also hard to change a winning squad, even if it means fitting a few square pegs into round holes. However, if Stokes was fit to bowl he would challenge Ravi Bopara for a place in the squad.More room is available for something different in the Twenty20 side because the performance against Sri Lanka, at Bristol, was so poor and a couple of the players from that match – Michael Lumb and Luke Wright – are injured. Bell was a controversial omission in that game and now would be a good chance to give him a go in the opener’s slot, where he has a strike-rate of 127.27 and 140 runs from four innings, if the selectors don’t feel Alex Hales is ready. Taylor, although he only made 1 against Ireland, could also earn a chance to fight for a battling slot and Stokes’ hitting ability is worth investing in.Possible one-day squad: Alastair Cook (capt), Craig Kieswetter, Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Eoin Morgan, Ian Bell, Samit Patel, Ravi Bopara, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, James Anderson, Jade Dernbach, Steven FinnPossible Twenty20 squad: Stuart Broad (capt), Craig Kieswetter, Ian Bell, Kevin Pietersen, Eoin Morgan, James Taylor, Ben Stokes, Ravi Bopara, Samit Patel, Tim Bresnan, Graeme Swann, Jade Dernbach, Chris Woakes

Chief selector Kris Srikkanth has blamed India’s collective batting failure for their poor performances, and said it had nothing to do with fatigue or poor preparation in the lead-up to the series

Kris Srikkanth, India’s chief selector, has blamed the collective batting failure for series defeat in England, and said the loss had nothing to do with fatigue or poor preparation.”If you see the FTP, all countries are playing cricket 365 days a year whether England or Australia,” Srikkanth said. “It is not the Indians only. The fact is that cricket is being played the whole year in whatever format – Test, ODI or Twenty20. So I don’t think that it is the fatigue factor for the performance in England.”However in the last 12 months India have played more Tests than any other team and more one-day games than anyone except Pakistan. In addition to 14 Tests and 29 ODIs over the past year, India’s players also took part in the gruelling IPL, which began within a week of the World Cup final. In the first three Tests this series, India have not managed to post a total in excess of 300, and Rahul Dravid is the only batsman to have averaged more than 40. Srikkanth said the batting had failed to perform as a unit. “The batting did not click for us. In the Indian side, if batting clicks everything clicks. We also did not do well in bowling and fielding. England bowling attack is ideally suited for the conditions.”It is a fact that our top five batsmen have not clicked in the series so far. But the same bunch of cricketers have been doing well during the last couple of years. The same combination had defeated South Africa in South Africa. It our bad luck that in this particular tour nothing has clicked for us.”India had England struggling at 124 for 8 in the first innings at Trent Bridge, but a ninth-wicket 74-run partnership between Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann played a crucial role in England getting to 221. Srikkanth said India’s failure to capitalise on the opportunity was one of the key turning points in the series. “It is a question of mental toughness and our cricketers are mentally very tough … [but] at 124 for 8, if you look at it psychologically … psychologically there we lost the battle,” he told .The BCCI has been criticised by former cricketers for its failure to prioritise Test cricket, but Srikkanth defended the Indian board. “Let us not indulge in the blame game – on the players or the administrators or the BCCI. Nobody is to be blamed and it’s not the time for that. It is just that we are going through a bad phase.”England have replaced India at the top of the Test rankings, but while Srikkanth was confident India would be able to bounce back, he said it was time to rebuild the team. “We have to learn from the series in England, look into what went wrong. We also have to identify and support new talent when the time comes,” he said.”We all have to put our heads together and plan for the future,” Srikkanth told the . “We have to start the process all over again without complaining. We have to try our various combinations to get the best team like we did before the World Cup. We even dropped Yuvraj Singh, who came back strongly into the ODI team and left a huge impact on the tournament. We want to do similar things now.”
