Grand fightback ruins Amir's party

Plays of the Day from the second day of the fourth Test between England and Pakistan at Lord’s

Nadir of the day
“I’ve got to look at the positives and drag my confidence up, which has been hammered in the last 18 months. I’m nowhere near the person I used to be but I’ve got to keep trying to work at it.” Those were Kevin Pietersen’s words on the eve of the Lord’s Test, as he poured his heart out to Mike Atherton in an interview for Sky Sports. Unfortunately for Pietersen, his quest for redemption is far from over yet, after a horrible dismissal that raised a whole new host of doubts about his mindset. After arriving at the crease a mere three balls into the day, KP watched from the non-striker’s end as Mohammad Asif sent down a maiden, but rather than afford himself a sighter in prodigious swinging conditions, he flung a wild drive at an outswinger from Mohammad Amir, and snicked his first ball to the keeper. The atmosphere as he returned to the pavilion was reminiscent of Ian Botham’s infamous pair in 1981 – with none of the members quite knowing where to look.Bowler of the day
Amir’s astounding onslaught ripped the guts out of England’s innings, as he claimed 4 for 0 with his first ten balls of the day, and in the process inflicted ducks on England’s No. 4, 5 and 6 – for the first time in the team’s Test history. But his most notable dismissal, for a number of reasons, came in the second over of his post-lunch spell, as Matt Prior’s plucky resistance was ended by another well-directed outswinger. Amir sunk to his knees to perform a celebratory sajda, as well he might. He had completed his second five-wicket haul in the space of six days – to become, at 18 years and 136 days – the youngest man to etch his name on the Lord’s honours board. In the same breath, he overtook Daniel Vettori to become the youngest bowler to reach 50 Test wickets, and celebrated the achievement two balls later by inflicting England’s fourth duck of the innings on Graeme Swann.Anchor of the day
England’s batting coach, Graham Gooch, yesterday suggested that England’s batsmen had forgotten the art of building Test innings, but one man in the top six was totally exempt of that charge today. Jonathan Trott’s ponderous batting style has had its detractors of late, not least in the last Lord’s Test against Bangladesh when he ground along to a career-best 226. But today the value of a man who puts a price on his wicket was plain for all to see. With impeccable judgment and a calm assurance on the front foot, Trott arrested the rot in England’s middle order, notched up his third Test century and in the process went past 1000 runs in Test cricket. This is his 23rd innings, putting him equal with Mike Atherton and Kevin Pietersen, among other notable England batsmen.Impetus of the day
Stuart Broad’s backfoot cover-drive was once likened by Geoffrey Boycott to that of Garry Sobers, but his batting had been in the doldrums of late, with just 106 runs in 11 innings since the Ashes, until he rediscovered his rhythm with a combative 48 at The Oval last week. Suitably emboldened, he put his recent troubles behind him with a brilliantly belligerent maiden first-class hundred, one that was greeted with a raucous standing ovation from an absorbed Lord’s crowd. On 88, he had gone past his father, Chris, to become the highest-scoring Broad in a Test at Lord’s, having already, on 73, emulated Trott in passing the 1000-run mark. It’s not inconceivable that he could complete the double in this Test as well. He is currently on 94 Test wickets, and so needs six in the match to become the 11th Englishman to reach the mark, and the first since Ashley Giles and Andrew Flintoff, who brought up their 1000 and 100 in the same Cape Town Test in January 2005.Partnership of the day
In a series marked by stunning batting capitulations, Broad and Trott’s eighth-wicket alliance has the look of a match-seizing moment. So far in the series there have been just seven century stands – compared to 60 in single figures – and by the close the pair had eclipsed Eoin Morgan and Paul Collingwood’s 219 at Trent Bridge. It was the second time in consecutive Tests that Broad had been involved in a 100-run stand for the eighth wicket, having added 119 with Matt Prior at The Oval, and by the close, their stand was sandwiched at No. 2 in England’s all-time standings for the eighth wicket, between those involving Gubby Allen and John Murray, the only other England No.9s to make a Test match century.Reprieves of the day
It was rather a case of horses and stable doors, but when the part-time legspinner Imran Farhat found Broad’s edge twice in consecutive deliveries in the 101st over of the innings, the reaction of Yasir Hameed at slip summed up the extent to which Pakistan’s morale had been battered. The first snick flew at a catchable height straight past his left hand and away for four, the second looped up off a leading edge and was fumbled as Hameed dived across to gather. Broad had been on 121 at the time, and he had added just one run to that total when Saeed Ajmal successfully appealed for lbw. Broad, however, correctly decided to use his review, and Ajmal was distinctly dischuffed to discover that the ball would have been sliding down the leg side.

Liverpool eye up Lautaro Martinez move

Jurgen Klopp and Julian Ward could bring a new striker to Liverpool this summer in the shape of Lautaro Martinez.

What’s the word?

That’s according to the latest reports from TuttoMercato, who claim that the 24-year-old has decided that he wants a move to a “big club with many titles” and the Reds have him in their crosshairs as a result.

The Italian outlet suggests that Martinez will not be playing his football for Inter Milan next season, with the Nerazzurri looking to free up some budget.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

The fee will of course depend on the way he ends the season but is reported to be around €80m (£67m).

It is said that Arsenal and Atletico Madrid had made their interest known, though the Argentinian striker was not willing to entertain a move to either side, with his sites set on joining a club that has won “many titles.”

Possible destinations suggested by TuttoMercato are Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Manchester City or Bayern Munich.

An elite club

Thanks to their historical success and silverware as of recent, Liverpool are in an elite and forthright position to sign the “sensational” £76k-per-week talent.

Klopp would be right to do so, with Martinez notching up some impressive numbers in regards to his goal returns. In 42 appearances this season, the Argentina international has three assists.

Lautaro has demonstrated that he can be more creative, having created 11 assists last season, when Lukaku was the main man in Milan.

Being an out-and-out striker, he would offer a presence up-top that Liverpool have not had since Luis Suarez.

Capable of adapting to the style of Lionel Messi, his teammate in the national team, Martinez could find a new partnership with Mohammed Salah.

Of recent, Salah has established an identity as a top goalscorer, and if he would be willing to collaborate with the 24-year-old in Liverpool’s frontline, we could well see a deadly duo in the Premier League.

This is a transfer that few clubs have the opportunity to pull off, so it would be worth a look at least from the perspective of Jurgen Klopp.

Major changes ahead for West Indies, says CEO

Ernest Hilaire, chief executive of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), has said major changes are likely to be made to the structure of West Indies cricket

Tariq Engineer05-Oct-2010

Chris Gayle arrived in England two days before the Lord’s Test in May, 2009•Associated Press

Ernest Hilaire, chief executive of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), believes that major changes will have to be made to the management structure of Caribbean cricket in order to deal with the challenges posed by the modern-day game, not least the growing tendency for the region’s top players to turn down central contracts in favour of lucrative deals in Twenty20 tournaments such as the Indian Premier League.Consulting firm Deloitte Touche Tomhatsu has been commissioned by the board to compile a study of cricket’s changing landscape, and Hilaire believes that their findings will have to be taken seriously by the region’s administrators. “Once that exercise is complete, you will see some fundamental changes to how West Indies cricket is managed,” Hilaire told ESPNcricinfo. “Anyone who thinks we don’t have to change are just fooling themselves.”Hilaire said the board had asked the three players who have turned down their central contracts for next season – Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard and captain Chris Gayle – how to ensure such a situation does not arise again in the future.”Two of them have said they are willing to share with us how this matter can be dealt with,” Hilaire said. All three of them will be considered for selection for West Indies and the board will assume that they are available to tour at that time.Bravo and Pollard, followed by Gayle, turned down the one-year central contracts offered by the WICB last month. The contracts require the players to make themselves available for the West Indies team at all times, something the three players – all of whom have forged prominent careers in domestic Twenty20 competitions including the IPL – were reluctant to do.”I don’t know that we should necessarily condemn them or chastise them [for doing so],” Hilaire said. “I don’t think it is the right decision and I will tell them that.”Under the current rules of international cricket, those who want to play in overseas competitions, such as the Big Bash in Australia or the lucrative IPL, must get clearance to do so from their national board. Hilaire said the WICB has not received any requests from any players so far but the board is re-evaluating its liberal policy of issuing NOCs.”We need to be a little more circumspect. It is not ideal to allow somebody to turn up just before a Test match. It doesn’t make sense, but we did it. On the eve of a major series, we can’t have key players exposed to exhaustion or injury.”We want to know that when we are selecting players, there are some assurances that they will participate in preparatory activities and be at the standard that we need.”Gayle arrived in England two days before the first Test at Lord’s in May 2009, two days after his scheduled arrival. He was granted two further days so that he could squeeze in one more IPL match with the Kolkata Knight Riders .”We are not against players trying to maximise their earnings,” Hilaire said. “You should go out and earn money. You are a professional sportsperson. But there are other interests and we have to figure out how best to protect all the interests involved.” He admitted that it is unlikely everyone will be completely happy but believes it is possible to come up with a framework that can satisfy all the stakeholders in West Indies cricket.Hilaire said the board has not had any discussion on whether Gayle should be replaced as captain. The West Indies selection committee will be meeting in Jamaica in a few days and will select a captain and vice-captain for the tour of Sri Lanka.”The selection committee is empowered to pick a captain and should do so. We [the WICB board of directors] can only hold a discussion after we receive a recommendation.”Hilaire reiterated that the board is committed to the rejuvenation of West Indies cricket and is encouraged that 22 of the 25 players offered central contracts have signed them. “We have a new generation that are eager to play for West Indies on the international stage. They understand the importance of playing for the West Indies and it is an opening for us to build on that.”He said the board was focused on specific activities and programs geared at getting players ready for international cricket, as well working on broadening the base by facilitating more youngsters to take up the game. “There is competition from other sports more now than ever before. Post 15 [years of age] we should not lose players to basketball, football, tennis and swimming. If you don’t have programs, they will go into other sports that do offer programs.”The WICB also wants to improve its relationship with West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA), as the two organisations have to work together, but Hilaire said the relationship is “still a work in progress,” and that there will always be moments where the board and WIPA do not agree. However, the important thing, according to him, is that everyone agrees “that some direct and aggressive intervention is needed” to turn West Indies cricket around.

Autor do único gol do Cruzeiro, Raniel comemora vitória e agradece apoio

Villa: Journo update on Gomez pursuit

Journalist Ashley Preece has provided an update on Aston Villa’s hopes of signing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, following recent speculation linking the player to the club.

What’s the word?

Responding to fan questions during a Q&A, Birmingham Mail correspondent Preece suggested that while the Midlands side are interested in a deal for the Englishman, any move will likely rest on the player’s own decision.

Asked whether he thought a deal for the 24-year-old could happen, the journalist responded with: “It’s one Villa like. Gerrard really keen on that but it’ll be down to Gomez himself to force a move out of Liverpool this summer. Two years left on his Anfield deal so a decision needs to be made.”

Previous reports have also suggested that the Villa Park outfit are keen on a deal, while pundit Paddy Kenny recently suggested the Merseysiders should cash on the player, with just two years remaining on his current contract.

Time to pounce

Villa supporters will likely be praying that manager Steven Gerrard can capitalise on his Anfield connections to tempt the former Charlton man into a move away from his current side, with the club in need of new additions in the centre of defence.

Since taking charge earlier this term, the former Rangers boss has favoured a centre-back pairing of Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings, albeit with varying degrees of success, with Gerrard’s men having shipped 46 Premier League goals so far this term – the tenth worst record in the division.

Equally, Mings, in particular, has come under fire from fans and pundits alike, with a poll run by Football FanCast earlier this season resulting in 66% of voters agreeing that the 29-year-old is a liability for the club, while former Leeds United defender Danny Mills recently suggested that the skipper needs to be replaced, as “there always seems to be a mistake in his game somewhere.”

Despite having fallen out of favour under Jurgen Klopp, Gomez – who has made just six Premier League appearances this season, only two of which were starts – is still held in high esteem by those at the top level, with Garth Crooks previously comparing him to England’s World Cup-winning captain, Bobby Moore.

A significant absence due to an injury sustained in November 2020 has hampered his progress since then, although having now returned to full fitness regular game time is surely on the player’s agenda, with reports earlier this season suggesting the player was frustrated that his lack of action could hamper his chances of an international recall.

The 11-time capped colossus has impressed when he has enjoyed a rare league outing this season, however, registering 0.8 tackles per game and winning 60% of his total duels, suggesting that Villa would still be plucking a quality player regardless of his infrequent use.

The London-born star – who has previously been dubbed “sensational” by current boss Klopp – had been pivotal to the Reds’ 2019/20 title-winning campaign, making 28 league appearances as his side surged to a remarkable tally of 99 points.

That season saw the £75k-per-week ace record 12 clean sheets and register 1.4 interceptions and 2.1 clearances per game, forming a formidable partnership with teammate Virgil Van Dijk which left pundit Martin Keown suggesting that the duo could be “as good as anything you’re ever going to see in the in the Premier League.”

With Joel Matip having since usurped his starting berth, however, – as well as summer signing Ibrahima Konate – Gomez is seemingly in need of a new home elsewhere to recapture his form.

Villa’s sporting director Johan Lange simply must pounce to prize the 6 foot 2 brute this summer.

Baroda takes first-innings lead against Haryana

Baroda took a 48-run first innings after routing Haryana for 127 runs at the Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium in Rohtak. Munaf Patel started the rot by bowling Haryana captain Rahul Dewan for 15. Nitin Saini fell five overs later for 18 to leave Haryana 35 for 2. Things steadily became worse and when Munaf dismissed former India batsman Hemang Badani for 8, the score read 72 for 5. Dhruv Singh provided some late middle-order resistance, making 35, but left-arm spinner Bhargav Bhatt ran through the tail to knock Haryana over in just 42.2 overs. Munaf finished with 4 for 34, while Bhatt took 3 for 25. Baroda got a solid start from their openers, who added 56, but it was a whirlwind unbeaten 65 from Yusuf Pathan, who struck 6 fours and four sixes, that took Baroda past the hosts. Yusuf added 87 with Connor Williams (49*) from 17.3 overs as Baroda ended the day on 175 for 3.Form Guide – Tracking ESPNcricinfo’s players to watch this season

Vinay Kumar and Sreenath Aravind combined to skittle Punjab for 237 and hand Karnataka the advantage after the first day at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali. Put in to bat, Punjab slumped to 42 for 3, with Vinay Kumar taking two wickets in two balls. Uday Kaul and Yuvraj Singh then came together to add 84, before Yuvraj flashed at an outswinger from Aravind, to be caught behind for 39. Kaul continued to offer resistance, but fell to Aravind six short of what would have been a well-deserved century. Kumar picked up two more wickets to end with figures of 5 for 61, while Aravind took 4 for 63.Led by Eklavya Dwivedi’s meticulous half-century, Uttar Pradesh crawled to 174 for 4 against Orissa at the Dr Akhilesh Das Stadium in Lucknow. Dwivedi and Mohammad Kaif put on 113 for the third wicket after UP had lost both their openers for 28. The partnership was broken when Alok Sahoo had Kaif lbw for 51 from 160 deliveries, with six fours. Dwivedi finally fell in the second-last over of the day, also to Sahoo, having batted for five and three-quarter hours and faced 250 balls for his 83.Group AAjinkya Rahane began his 2010-11 Ranji Trophy campaign with yet another century, but Wasim Jaffer missed out on a third successive hundred, as Mumbai piled up 287 for 4 on the first day against Bengal at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Rahane, who missed Mumbai’s opening game against Saurashtra, made 110, his 15th first-class hundred, and added 142 with captain Jaffer for the third wicket. Both men were ultimately dismissed by Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary’s part-time medium-pace, giving him career-best figures of 2 for 23. Rahane was the first to go, caught in the slips, and two overs later Jaffer chased a wide one and edged behind for 73. Rohit Sharma and Abhishek Nayar played out the rest of the day, with Sharma looking in good form while making 37 from 48 balls, with seven fours.Assam found themselves in trouble at 174 for 7 against Railways at the Karnail Singh Stadium in Delhi, with one-time India spinner Murali Kartik taking four wickets. Having chosen to bat, Assam were quickly in trouble at 15 for 2. Captain Amol Muzumdar and Sridharan Sriram then put on 54 before Kartik got in the act by having Sriram caught for 31. Muzumdar was the next to go, falling to the legspin of Marripuri Suresh, having made a painstaking 44 from 132 deliveries. After Deepak Sharma’s dismissal for 21, leg before to Kartik, Tarjinder Singh and Kunal Saika took Assam to 161 for 5. Kartik then took two late wickets to leave the visitors in a deep hole. Tarjinder was on 34 at stumps, with Arlen Konwar for company.Virat Kohli made it back-to-back hundreds as Delhi racked up 258 for 3 against Tamil Nadu at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Delhi had just lost two quick wickets after the openers had added 53 when captain Mithun Manhas joined Kohli at the crease. The pair then proceeded to make the home bowlers toil, adding 190 for the third wicket to put Delhi in a strong position going into the second day. Manhas eventually fell for 70, having hit four fours and two sixes in his 140-ball knock. Rajat Bhatia (1) was forced to retire hurt but Kohli was still there at stumps having made 119 to go with the 173 he made in the first game against Bengal. The opening day in the game between Gujarat and Saurashtra at the Lalabhai Contractor Stadium in Surat was called off because of rain.
