Tim Nielsen lauds fearless Nathan Hauritz

It was Hauritz’s response to the aggressive batting of the Pakistanis which has impressed the Australian coach

For Tim Nielsen, the defining moment for Nathan Hauritz wasn’t the big-turning off-break that penetrated Faisal Iqbal’s defences, nor the dismissal of Saeed Ajmal, which sealed a Test victory for Australia and a maiden five-wicket haul for the bowler. Rather, it was Hauritz’s response to the aggressive batting of the Pakistanis, Kamran Akmal in particular, that most impressed the Australian coach, convincing him that self-belief was now a component of the spinner’s arsenal.Hauritz was blasted for four sixes over the course of the match, including one by the elder Akmal on the final day. Such treatment might in the past have prompted a nervous Hauritz to recoil into his shell and revert to a defensive, darting trajectory, but his response at the MCG was to give the ball more flight and engage Akmal in an attacking duel.Within nine deliveries of the six, Hauritz had his man. Tempted by another looping offering, Akmal charged from the crease only to be beaten in flight and stumped by Brad Haddin. Hauritz dismissed Mohammed Aamer with his next delivery before removing the dangerous Mohammad Yousuf and Ajmal to close out the match for Australia. It was just the second five-wicket haul claimed by an Australian spinner since the retirement of Shane Warne, and the first in more than a year.”It’s something all young players go through,” Nielsen said. “There’s different times when they feel they’ve bowled well enough and they belong, and there are other days where they are continually questioning what they’re doing and whether they’re doing things right. It’s a long haul. He’s only played 11 Tests. It’s not like he’s had years and years of experience.”The pleasing thing, the thing I enjoyed the most, was seeing him get hit for six by Akmal and then be willing to throw the ball up again and get him stumped. That’s a bit of a watershed moment for us and for him, that he had the confidence and the trust in himself to keep throwing the ball up there and let the surface do some work for him. Young bowlers especially don’t like getting hit for six. It’s easy for people to say Shane Warne had the courage to do that, but he had 700 wickets under his belt. We saw some really good signs from Haury on the weekend.”Lost in the euphoria of Hauritz’s breakthrough performance in the Boxing Day Test was the fact he almost missed the match due to a groin injury. For the second consecutive game, Australian team management had flown Steven Smith in as cover in the event Hauritz was deemed unfit to play but in Melbourne, as in Perth, Australia’s senior spinner rose to the challenge.Hauritz will again play through the pain of the tendon injury in Sydney, where he will be called upon to counter Pakistan’s likely twin-spin attack of Ajmal and Danish Kaneria. The fact Australia have not included Smith in their squad for the second Test suggests Hauritz’s condition has stabilised, although Nielsen warned that the nature of the injury was such that the spinner would be constantly monitored.”Unfortunately, our medical staff I believe can’t get a handle on it from day to day,” Nielsen said. “One day it’s great, the next day it can be pretty sore. With a tendon injury it tends to needs a fair bit of work, but if you overload it and have to bowl a lot it can get fatigued. It’s one of those things we just have to manage when we’re playing so much.”As the wickets fell (at the MCG) he probably felt better and better. There are times when he does get tired, and if it’s the third session and he’s bowled a lot he certainly does get sore. It’s no different from anybody: we’ve got Ponting now with a sore elbow, Katich with a sore elbow and different players with different niggles through a Test. That’s part of the drama and the challenge of playing Test match cricket. It’s five days of hard work and it’s pretty rare that you feel 100% fit.”.

Entrega e concentração: postura no Dérbi vira exemplo no Corinthians

Liverpool still keen on signing Danjuma

Liverpool remain interested in signing Villarreal winger Arnaut Danjuma but a deal won’t happen in January, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Reds linked with Danjuma move

The Reds had a quiet summer transfer window and there may have been a feeling that an attacking signing was needed in order to add more depth in the final third.

Danjuma is one player who has been linked with a move to Anfield since then, having ended up staying put at Villarreal in the summer.

The 24-year-old has scored five goals and registered two assists in La Liga this season, making 10 starts in the division to date. He also found the net four times in six Champions League group stage appearances, making an impression in Europe’s premier club competition.

The Latest: Romano provides Danjuma update

Taking to Twitter on Christmas Day, Romano provided an update on the situation, confirming that Liverpool still see him as a potential transfer target but quashing any prospects of a move in next month’s transfer window.

He tweeted: “Danjuma will not leave Villarreal in January. Liverpool are among top clubs monitoring him for the future but there are no talks for January – he’s staying.”

The Verdict: Strong squad option

Danujma is the perfect type of signing that Liverpool should be looking to make moving forward – someone already performing at a high level but who could become even more of a force under Jurgen Klopp.

The Dutchman has been hailed as ‘exceptional’ by Jonathan Woodgate following a two-year spell at Bournemouth, and two goals in five caps for Netherlands is a promising return.

Danjuma could come in and be a strong backup for the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane – at 24, he would also be a long-term signing, much in the same way that Liverpool’s African superstars were when they first came to Anfield.

No dia seguinte à conquista do Timão, o ex-defensor parabenizou o atual camisa 4 alvinegro.

– Ele me mandou mensagem parabenizando pelo título.

Auckland take tense first win

A round-up of the fifth day’s games of the HRV Cup, New Zealand’s domestic Twenty20 competition

Auckland kept their cool to secure their first Twenty20 victory of the season, a two-run win over Wellington at the Basin Reserve. Chasing 170, Wellington slid to 7 for 3 after the second over, but James Franklin’s 48-ball 72, studded with five sixes, revived them. With Chris Nevin smashing a 24-ball 41, Wellington were actually in control going into the final three overs, needing 17 runs with both Nevin and Franklin at the crease. However, Daryl Tuffey removed Nevin and Michael Bates struck twice in two deliveries of the penultimate over to dent Wellington. The home side could have still won, needing six off the final five balls, but the last wicket pair couldn’t pull it off. Earlier, after being sent in, Auckland relied on half-centuries from opener Lou Vincent and Anaru Kitchen to post a tall total. It was a far easier outing for table-topping Central Districts, who coasted to a 19-run victory over Northern Districts at Pukekura Park. Ross Taylor blasted four fours and four sixes in his 53 to power CD to 184, with Daniel Vettori being carted for 53 runs in his four overs. Even though big-hitting allrounders Jacob Oram and Graham Napier barely contributed with the bat, they made amends while bowling; Napier got the big wicket of Vettori early and followed it up by dismissing Daniel Flynn, while Oram prised out Brian Watling to leave ND at 23 for 3. James Marshall’s half-century started a recovery but George Worker got two-in-two in his only over, the 12th, to dash ND’s hopes. It was the team batting first that won in Christchurch as well, where defending champions Otago crushed Canterbury by 43 runs. After choosing to bat, Otago’s top four each made at least 20, with Neil Broom’s 37-ball 58 being the top score. There was drama in the final over of Otago’s batting, when Ryan Burson took three wickets in four balls and gave away only two runs to leave Canterbury needing 160 to win. Canterbury’s chances were nearly extinguished by the end of the seventh over following a middle-order collapse in which three wickets went down in seven deliveries. From 45 for 5, it was mostly a question of reducing the margin of defeat.

Sunderland injury news on Aiden McGeady

Sunderland have been dealt a fresh blow as Lee Johnson gave some injury news on Aiden McGeady.

The Lowdown: Still missing…

The 35-year-old has not played for the Black Cats since November, with three goals and four assists in 14 League One games so far this season (Transfermarkt).

He had only missed most of his appearances, clearly showing how much Johnson rates him and how important he is to the team.

The Latest: McGeady setback

As per The Chronicle, Johnson has now given an update on McGeady’s injury, and unfortunately does not think that the Republic of Ireland veteran is close to returning to the pitch in a Sunderland shirt.

The manager revealed: “I wouldn’t say he is close at the moment. How long he’ll be exactly I don’t know, but I think it will certainly be at least four to six weeks.”

The Verdict: Blow for Sunderland

It would certainly be a big blow if the Black Cats were to be without McGeady for another six weeks. While they have been doing well without him recently, as they are currently unbeaten in their last six League One games and sitting in the promotion spots, their luck could run out sooner rather than later.

Virus cases within clubs seem to be a lottery at the moment, as Sunderland’s scheduled match against Fleetwood Town tpday was postponed due to cases in the opposition’s camp, so Johnson could find his squad more depleted as the season goes on.

Therefore, players like McGeady – who has been ranked by WhoScored as the Wearsiders’ fourth-best player so far this term – will surely be needed for the promotion push.

Described as ‘unbelievable’ by former Republic of Ireland teammate David Meyler, McGeady still has quality despite being 35 years of age, and he will certainly be a miss in the next few matches for Sunderland.

In other news, this transfer latest has had many Black Cats fans buzzing

Obanda leads Kenyan rout of Canada

Alex Obanda butchered 79 from 48 balls to lead Kenya to a resounding victory over Canada in the World Twenty20 Qualifiers in Dubai

Cricinfo staff10-Feb-2010

Alex Obanda was in devastating form as Kenya made light work of a modest Canada total•International Cricket Council

Scorecard
Alex Obanda butchered 79 from 48 balls to lead Kenya to a resounding victory over Canada in the World Twenty20 Qualifiers in Dubai.Following their disappointing defeat to minnows UAE in their opening game, where their conservative approach strangled hopes of chasing 165, Kenya came out firing in pursuit of a modest total from Canada. Obanda dominated a 126-run opening stand with Steve Tikolo, which came from only 76 balls. The pair were severe on the generous serving of short balls dished up from the Canada bowlers, who were clearly wilting in the heat of the Kenyan attack. From the first over Obanda unfurled an array of rasping cuts and pulls, taking 13 off Umar Bhatti’s opening over, as he raced to his fifty from just 23 balls. The pair reached 64 inside the five overs and, while Tikolo didn’t get much of the strike, he was no less aggressive when he did. His 50, from 36 balls, included five fours and a six, enough to reminded everyone that, even at the age of 38, he remains one of the most gifted batsmen outside Test cricket. It made made a mockery of the target Canada scrapped together earlier in the day. They were inserted by Maurice Ouma and lost John Davidson in the first over of the game, bowled by Hiren Varaiya for a duck. Rizwan Cheema, the Canada captain, opening with Davidson tried to arrest the early momentum with a couple of big shots, but things didn’t improve for his side as Hiral Patel fell for four in the fifth over, pulling a short ball from Jimmy Kamande straight to Tikolo at square leg.The bulk of the runs came through contributions from Cheema (32), Geoff Barnett (30) and a run-a-ball 36 from Ashish Bagai. Despite these useful starts, none of the batsmen could get away. Kamande’s nagging offspinners choked the middle order and his dismissal of Cheema, with a doosra, was one to remember. The batsman had no clue as it spun away from him and clipped the edge through the wicketkeeper Ouma.Medium-pacer Nehemiah Odhiambo, who was the pick of the bowlers in Kenya’s opening match, was again in the wickets today, as he bowled a devastating ‘death’ over of yorkers to collect three wickets and give away just four runs.It set the momentum which Obanda and Tikolo lifted to another level to revive Kenya’s hopes of progressing in the tournament.
