Wolves: Fans praise Ruben Neves v West Ham

A number of Wolves supporters have been lauding Ruben Neves’ influential performance in their 1-0 win over West Ham on Saturday.

Bruno Lage’s side hosted a flying Hammers team at Molineux in what was a big test of Wanderers’ credentials. They passed with flying colours, however, with Raul Jimenez’s second-half strike proving to be the difference between the two sides.

It was a further sign of the progress that Wolves have made in recent times and the victory saw them jump to sixth place in the Premier League, going above Manchester United in the process.

One player who was exceptional for Wanderers on Saturday was Neves, with the Portuguese midfielder emerging as the highest-rated performer on the day (8.0) according to SofaScore. He completed 67 of his 76 passes (88%), won four duels and three tackles, played one key pass and eight accurate long balls, and made three interceptions in an all-round superb performance.

Wolves fans laud Neves’ performance

After the game, Wolves’ official Twitter channel hailed Neves’ efforts, and these fans responded by showing their love for the midfielder, who some supporters feel has improved significantly from last season.

“Maybe the best midfield performance I have ever seen from a #wwfc midfielder. Made Rice, who is a wonderful footballer, look 2nd best by a long way”

Nielsen to take leave ahead of Champions Trophy

Australia are already without their captain Ricky Ponting in England and soon they will also lose their coach, with Tim Nielsen set to take leave before the end of the ODI series. Troy Cooley, the assistant coach and bowling mentor, will take over as coach when Nielsen heads home following the fourth one-day international.Cricket Australia said in a statement that Nielsen’s early departure from England was intended to allow him to spend time with his young family in Adelaide with a hectic year of international cricket on the horizon. Nielsen will rejoin the squad in South Africa on September 22 as Australia prepares to defend the Champions Trophy.”The Australian team has played back-to-back international cricket since September 2008 and looking at the busy schedule over the next 12 months, we believe it is the right time for Tim to take a break,” Michael Brown, Cricket Australia’s general manager of cricket, said. “This will also provide an excellent opportunity for Tim’s assistant, Troy Cooley, to continue his professional development by stepping up as acting coach for the remainder of the tour.”Cooley will be in charge for the final three one-day internationals against England, starting on September 13. The team is already short on experience in its playing ranks with Ponting being rested for the start of the ODIs – although he could return for the tail-end of the series – and Brad Haddin recovering from surgery.Nielsen is one of the few members of Australia’s group who has been in England right throughout the disappointing tour, which began with their early exit from the ICC World Twenty20 three months ago. Prior to that, he guided the squad through their tours of South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. After the Champions Trophy, Australia head to India for a one-day series before returning home to prepare for the Tests against West Indies and Pakistan.

Tupãzinho 2.0? Clayson salva outra vez, e Corinthians supera o Coritiba

Newcastle had transfer howler with Almiron

PIF completed their takeover of Newcastle United last month to bring Mike Ashley’s 14-year reign on Tyneside to an end.

Ashley left St James’ Park after years of mediocrity on the pitch, with only one season of finishing higher than 10th in the Premier League in that time and 10 bottom-half finishes.

Ashley’s legacy

The lack of quality work in the transfer market was one of the factors behind these lacklustre seasons, with Ashley leaving behind a legacy of poor recruits for PIF to come in and clear up. One of those was the addition of Miguel Almiron in 2019.

The Paraguayan joined the Tyneside club from MLS outfit Atlanta United for a reported £21m fee in January 2019, which was a club-record deal at the time.

In 103 matches for the Magpies, he has scored 13 goals and produced five assists, which works out at one goal contribution every 5.7 games for the club. In the Premier League, he has eight goals and three assists in 91 games, averaging out at a goal contribution every 8.27 games. This is a poor return for a player who came in as an attacking midfielder for a club-record fee and it typifies the recruitment that Ashley oversaw in his tenure at Newcastle.

The midfielder also came out in March and publicly stated he would like to play for a team which ‘fights more’. Former Premier League player Carlton Palmer reacted to those comments by claiming that Almiron would create problems in the dressing room, telling Football FanCast:

“If I was Steve Bruce, I would be absolutely annoyed and angry. There’s too much, there’s too much coming out of Newcastle at the moment. I mean, the manager’s had a flare-up with one of the players, which is an everyday occurrence at football clubs up and down the country.

“Whether it’s between player and player or between player and manager, whether it’s a big player and a coach, there’s always a disagreement, but why that gets into the public domain… Him making that comment now is going to create more problems within the dressing room because players are going to turn around and say, ‘well you’re accusing me of not fighting then for the club?’”

This suggests that the 27-year-old is causing problems on and off the pitch with his displays and his comments, which is why he has been a disaster of a signing for the club.

At the time of writing (29/11/21), Transfermarkt value him at £15.75m. This is considerably less than the £21m that Newcastle paid for him and shows that he has gone downhill since arriving in England, rather than impressing and increasing his value by putting in strong performances. Therefore, the Magpies had a bit of a howler with his arrival from the MLS in 2019…

Simon Jones signs for Hampshire

Former England fast bowler Simon Jones has signed for Hampshire

George Dobell30-Sep-2009Former England fast bowler Simon Jones has signed for Hampshire on a three-year deal.Jones, who was released by Worcestershire after his knee injury prevented him from bowling a ball in 2009, was also offered a contract at his former club Glamorgan. He has managed only 14 first-class games in the last four seasons but showed during 2008 – when he claimed 42 first-class wickets at 18 apiece – that he remains a fine bowler when fit.Last month Glamorgan emerged as the front runner to re-sign Jones, and Matthew Maynard, their director of cricket, could not hide his disappointment. “If he had those intentions [of going to Hampshire] then he should have expressed them slightly earlier,” he said. “I’ve left a lot of the negotiations to the chairman although I did speak to Simon and his agent and one of the major concerns was that he would have to do the same fitness test as the rest of the players.”That’s obviously an issue. I don’t know whether Simon doesn’t believe he can get through it but that is his choice. It would have been great to have Simon back but if he doesn’t want to come back there isn’t much we can do.”

Test championship gains support at ICC-MCC meeting

Cricinfo staff05-Nov-2009The notion of a World Test Championship has been given further credence after representatives from the ICC Cricket Committee and the MCC World Cricket Committee met in Dubai to discuss the general landscape of the game, with specific reference to the place of Tests and ODIs in a broader context. The delegates present at the meeting included the current South Africa coach, Mickey Arthur, the leading umpire, Simon Taufel, and Tim May, the chief executive of FICA, and there was a general agreement that Test cricket must remain the pinnacle of the sport, and that a more meaningful context – such as some form of Test championship – would help raise interest in that format of the game.”It was a very productive and interesting meeting held in a good spirit of cooperation,” said Clive Lloyd, the chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee. “The MCC has some great cricketing minds on its committee, people with a huge amount to offer the game. And so do we at the ICC. It was fascinating to hear those views expressed in such a positive and engaging forum as this.”The findings of the meeting tally with an MCC survey, in which 1500 fans were polled in India, South Africa and New Zealand. More than 80% of Indian fans said that they were at least regular followers of Test cricket, but fans from all three countries believed that a World Test Championship would raise interest in the sport.A number of possible enhancements for Test cricket were discussed at the meeting, including the idea of day-night Tests, rebranding the concept of Test cricket, making the playing regulations more flexible from series to series while also remaining mindful of the long tradition of the game. The delegates also discussed the ODI format and how that needs to remain viable and popular. It was accepted that international cricket can and should sustain the three formats of Tests, ODIs and Twenty20 Internationals in the long term but that ODIs must redevelop their own identity with the balance between bat and ball improved.”I want to thank the ICC for the invitation to meet in this way,” said Tony Lewis, the MCC World Cricket Committee Chairman. “Some of the many things we at the MCC have worked on over the past 12 months – such as a Test match championship, umpire referrals and research into pink balls – we were able to share and express our opinions. It has been an excellent, rewarding workshop that has produced some good ideas.”The observations of this joint-meeting will be presented to the ICC Chief Executives’ Committee at its next meeting, which takes place in Dubai on 30 November and 1 October.Present at the meeting were:ICC Cricket Committee Clive Lloyd (chairman), Mickey Arthur, Warren Deutrom, David Kendix, Tim May, David Richardson, Ravi Shastri, Simon Taufel, Mark TaylorMCC World Cricket Committee Tony Lewis (chairman), Geoffrey Boycott, Keith Bradshaw, Tony Dodemaide, Majid Khan, Shaun Pollock, Barry Richards, Michael Tissera, Courtney WalshAlso in attendance David Morgan (ICC president), Haroon Lorgat (ICC chief executive), John Stephenson (MCC assistant secretary) and Hugh Morris (England & Wales Cricket Board).

Celtic dealt setback in Reo Hatate pursuit

Celtic have been dealt a big setback in their bid to bring Reo Hatate to Parkhead in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Dan Orlowitz (via Everything Celtic), with the Japan Times journalist revealing that, despite reports suggesting that the player’s contract with Kawasaki Frontale is set to expire in January, the 24-year-old is actually contracted to the J League club beyond the end of the current campaign.

Subsequently, in recent comments cited by the Daily Record, Orlowitz went on to reveal that that Frontale are commanding a fee in the region of £2.4m in order to part with Hatate this January, something which is reported to be a stumbling block in Celtic’s move for the midfielder.

Speaking about the Bhoys’ interest in the player, Orlowitz said: “I’ve heard that Frontale want £2.4m for Hatate.”

Fans will be gutted

Considering just how impressive Hatate has been in Japan this season, the news that Celtic will not be able to land the midfielder on a free transfer, and may even end up missing out on his signing if they do not meet Frontale’s asking price, is sure to have left Hoops fans gutted.

Indeed, over his over 30 J League appearances this term, the £720k-rated man scored five goals, registered two assists and created three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking two shots and making 1.1 key passes per game.

These returns saw the 24-year-old earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.16, ranking him as Frontale’s fifth-best performer in their title-winning campaign.

Furthermore, Hatate’s ability to play at both left-back and attacking midfield is something which would prove incredibly useful for Ange Postecoglou, as Celtic are currently lacking strength in depth in both positions.

As such, it would indeed appear as if the 24-year-old’s signing would be a fantastic one for the Bhoys to get over the line this winter, and why Orlowitz’s latest update could come as a big blow to the club, as well as worrying news for fans.
