We can save the Test – Laxman

The disappointment was writ large on Rahul Dravid’s face as he was dismissed at a crucial stage in India’s innings, following which his team collapsed to be bowled out for 305.•AFP

Rahul Dravid will be one ticked-off man today. He certainly didn’t hide it. After playing almost flawlessly throughout, and making another Test century look a certainty, he threw it away with a careless shot to a part-timer, two overs before the new ball was due. More than the century he missed, he would have been livid about where he left India, who were looking to avoid the follow-on, and folded after his dismissal. All through his walk back to the dressing room, he kept admonishing himself. The standards Dravid sets himself are higher than what he achieved today. The standards the Indian team set themselves should be higher than what they achieved today. To criticise Virender Sehwag for playing attacking cricket – no matter the time of the day – will be unfair, but his shot selection – a pre-meditated sweep off a spinner – two evenings in a row should leave him more cross with himself than Dravid was with his own dismissal.Unlike Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Dinesh Karthik and Gautam Gambhir still have a second chance, but they can’t be sleeping peacefully after the way they played in the first innings. It will be a difficult task for all of them, though. In the first innings, they could entertain hopes of matching, or perhaps even overhauling, the New Zealand score and attempt to force an unlikely result. But now they know they face one of the most difficult tasks in Test cricket – to bat out time, with two days left in the game, and a win nowhere in sight. It will test the resolve, the technical proficiency and mental strength of the batsmen to the fullest. But Dravid looked forward to the long grind, and didn’t send out a nightwatchman; that was a good sign. VVS Laxman, who was quite captivating to watch during his 76 before he became part of the big fat collapse, shared the positivity.”Yeah definitely [we think we can save the Test],” Laxman said. “We are quite positive. We’ve done some amazing things in the past. We take a lot of confidence from what we have achieved in the past. It’s one more opportunity to do something special, and we have done that in the past – where we have come out of some tough situations as recently as in December when we won a Test match chasing almost 400 runs against England in the final innings. So the team has the opportunity to do something special.”Laxman also defended Yuvraj, who is having a horrid Test. Yuvraj first dropped two catches in the slips, where he wouldn’t even have been, but for the finger injury Sachin Tendulkar sustained in Hamilton. He then poked at the new ball, outside off, without any foot movement. He was later seen lapping the ground after the day’s play was over, and all had retired to the dressing rooms.”He’s getting ready for the opportunity that’s given to him,” Laxman said. “It’s so unfortunate that one innings someone fails you put pressure on him. He has done tremendously well in both forms of the game. He has won us a Test match against England, and played really well in the second Test in Mohali, and recently had a wonderful one-day series. He’s an amazing talent who is potentially a match-winner and one of the best talents India has produced.” Yuvraj better get ready, because if he comes in with India still in deficit, he will have to bat out of his skin.India can take heart from the fact that the pitch has no demons, and will most likely have none for the rest of the Test. But apart from that they have little to lean on. Their show in the field, compared to what New Zealand managed today, was uninspired. Their batting in this Test has lacked the big ruthless partnerships. In fact they lacked huge partnerships in Hamilton, too. The biggest stand there was 115, for the seventh wicket, which came after New Zealand’s dispiriting performance.Like Laxman said today, and like Zaheer Khan yesterday, this team prides itself in coming out of difficult situations they get into. Apart from the Chennai Test that Laxman mentioned, the other such example in recent past is the Bangalore Test last year. Over the next two days, India will be defending that pride.

Man Utd predicted XI to face Leicester

Manchester United will be looking to return to winning ways when they take on Leicester City in the Premier League this afternoon.

Ole Gunnar Solsjaer’s charges are winless in their last two league outings after Everton held them to a draw just a week after Aston Villa left Old Trafford with all three points.

The Red Devils are set to be boosted by the return of Marcus Rashford when they take on the Foxes, while club captain Harry Maguire could also make his comeback from injury. However, the £63m-rated Raphael Varane is sidelined with a calf problem and South American duo Fred and Edinson Cavani are unavailable due to their international involvements.

With that in mind, here’s how Football FanCast expects United to line up at the King Power Stadium, with four changes from the side which started against the Toffees last time out…

In goal, David de Gea will start between the sticks after an impressive start to the season for the Spanish shot-stopper, keeping Dean Henderson on the substitutes’ bench.

Ahead of the 30-year-old is set to be a slightly altered back four. While full-backs Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are available for selection, it may come too soon for Maguire to feature from the off, while Varane is out for several weeks.

That means Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly are expected to make rare starts for the 20-time English champions in what’s set to be a tricky test for Solskjaer’s charges, the Ivorian coming into the team for his first Premier League involvement of the season.

The engine room will also have an unfamiliar feel to it due to Fred’s enforced absence, but it should give Donny van de Beek a chance to come in alongside Scott McTominay for his first Premier League start of the campaign.

Completing the line-up should be a front four of Jadon Sancho, Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood and Cristiano Ronaldo, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner being restored to the first XI after surprisingly being omitted against Everton. He comes in for Cavani, with Sancho replacing the out-of-sorts Anthony Martial on the left wing.

Vital valoriza empate do Vasco fora: 'Pontuar no Brasileiro é importante'

"Dutch" Dirk has point to prove against Australia

Dirk Nannes, the Victoria fast bowler, believes Australia’s selectors have erred in overlooking him for the World Twenty20, and plans to show them what they’re missing when he lines up for his adopted nation, the Netherlands

Dirk Nannes, the Victoria fast bowler, believes Australia’s selectors have erred in overlooking him for the World Twenty20, and plans to show them what they’re missing when he lines up for his adopted nation, the Netherlands. Nannes has been in superb Twenty20 form with Delhi Daredevils in the IPL – his six wickets to date have cost just 6.48 runs an over, establishing himself as the preferred overseas paceman to Glenn McGrath – and feels he could have made a strong contribution for Australia, had he been given the opportunity.Nannes was a surprise omission from Australia’s original 30-man World Twenty20 squad, given his strong form in the format in both Australian and Indian domestic leagues. Prior to his successful stint with Delhi, Nannes had been the second leading wicket-taker in the Big Bash tournament, and his economy rate of 6.38 was the best among fast bowlers.Rather than become embittered at his shunning by the Australian selectors, Nannes opted to represent the Netherlands, for whom he qualifies on account of his parents’ Dutch heritage. He is now in line to play in the World Twenty20 tournament opener against England at Lord’s, and could face the Australians in the Super Eights, should both teams progress.”I’m not really that fussed that [Australia] are not picking me,” Nannes told Cricinfo. “Of course I would like to play for them, but I’ve been given a really good opportunity by the Dutch team. If I play for Holland, I will probably make the starting XI. If I was picked in the 30-man squad for Australia, the chances are I wouldn’t play and they’ll play other people. Obviously I would like to play and I do think I’m good enough to play and I do think I would be one of the better players in their team, but they chose not to pick me. I’m still going to go to the World Cup and I’m still going to play.”Andrew Hilditch, Australia’s chairman of selectors, said the availability and fitness of seasoned international fast bowlers had left no room for Nannes. “He has obviously had some success at domestic level, and mounted a strong case for consideration in the original 30-man squad,” Hilditch told Cricinfo. “But I think you have to compare apples with apples, and while his performances have been good at domestic level, we are fortunate enough at this time to have some very good international bowlers available, as we had hoped.”We feel we have the right flexibility in our squad with the players we have. I have not really thought too much about (Nannes’ move to Holland), to be honest.”

Nuno must axe Spurs star vs Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur return to Premier League action this weekend and it’ll be no easy task as Nuno Santo looks to build on their victory last time out.

The north Londoners head to the northeast to face Newcastle United at St James’ Park, where there is expected to be an electric atmosphere as it’ll be the first game under their new ownership.

Spurs defeated Aston Villa to put an end to their run of three successive heavy league defeats but they will need to continue that form with a result away from home today.

Nuno has been under increasing pressure in recent weeks and that leaves him with a tricky dilemma in terms of team selection – he’ll have to get it spot against the Magpies.

For all of the positives against Villa, there were still some aspects that could be improved on, particularly in the final third. It was actually the first time the side had bagged more than one goal in the top-flight this season.

Despite that, Spurs still sit second-bottom for average number of shots per game (10.4) in the Premier League – even the three teams in the relegation zone have fired off more attempts, whilst they also rank third-bottom for expected goals (7.25 xG).

The Portuguese head coach opted for Tanguy Ndombele in the no.10 role right before the international break but it’s a decision that failed to pay off as the Frenchman, who was not selected by Didier Deschamps last week, barely had an influence in the attack.

As per SofaScore, he managed only 41 touches, which was the lowest of any outfield starter for Spurs, whilst he made 18 passes – for context, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris made just three fewer.

One is meant to be the team’s playmaker.

Furthermore, Ndombele won just 50% of his midfield battles, proving to be ineffective and rather weak.

That has very much been the tale of the £36m-rated dynamo’s time in N17. A player, who on his day can be a world-beater, but those occasions are far and few between.

His performances when it really counts have been inconsistent, to say the least, but according to Joe Hart, the 24-year-old club-record signing is an exceptional talent.

During Spurs’ FA Cup clash with Wycombe Wanderers last season, the backup goalkeeper waxed lyrical about his former teammate to BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand.

“I said to Joe, how good is he? And he said ‘this kid is a world-beater, he can do anything.’ He just turned around during the game and said ‘this kid is unplayable’,” he claimed (via football.london).

Right now, however, it could be argued that the ex-Lyon star is holding Nuno’s side back as they cannot afford him coasting through some matches and then delivering in others.

It could be wise for the Portuguese to be ruthless and axe him at Newcastle this afternoon.

Phil Hay drops Leeds blow over Luke Ayling

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has confirmed that Leeds United defender Luke Ayling will miss today’s clash against Norwich City and delivered a worrying update on his potential comeback.

What’s the story?

The versatile 30-year-old has missed the last four games in the Premier League for Marcelo Bielsa’s side after being forced off late in the second half against Newcastle United a few weeks ago.

Hay has now revealed that Leeds manager Bielsa hasn’t indicated when Ayling could be back.

Writing on Twitter, the journalist said: “Shackleton has a chance of being involved but no Luke Ayling. Still not ready to return. Bielsa says there’s no precise return date set for Bamford, Ayling or Koch yet.”

Big setback for Bielsa

Usually one of the first names on the team-sheet, there’s no questioning that Ayling has been one of the manager’s most trusted lieutenants over the past couple of seasons.

The £45k-a-week ace played the full 90 minutes in every single Premier League game last season bar one, and even that was when Bielsa took him off to try and find a goal in the last 20 minutes against ten-man Arsenal.

Described as a “great technician” by former Arsenal academy team-mate Cedric Evina, Ayling’s composure on the ball is something that Bielsa particularly admires, saying after Leeds’ 3-0 victory over Aston Villa last year that the right-back “transmitted serenity to the rest of the team”.

The Leeds manager even once said that the defender was someone “who can solve any problem”, and that’s exactly why Hay’s update is a body blow for Bielsa and the Whites this weekend.

While missing Bamford up top and Phillips in the middle of the park have both been big blows for Leeds, losing a reliable presence like the 30-year-old Ayling is sure to have left the manager particularly gutted.

Meanwhile, Leeds are eyeing this South American ace…
