Newcastle handed injury boost before Leeds

Newcastle United have been handed a welcome injury boost ahead of their Premier League clash against Leeds United on Friday night.

What’s the story?

The Magpies have endured a hugely disappointing start to the new campaign, remaining winless in their opening few games and languishing inside the bottom three.

Steve Bruce has had to contend with injuries to some key players already, not least Callum Wilson, but he offered a huge boost on another former Bournemouth player.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Leeds, the manager said: “It’s too quick for Callum, too quick for Jonjo and too quick for Paul Dummett. Ryan Fraser has trained all week.”

Fraser could lift the mood

Since joining from the Cherries on a free transfer back in the summer of 2020, it’s fair to say Fraser hasn’t exactly set the world alight at St James’ Park.

The £9m-rated Scotland international has struggled for both form and fitness on Tyneside, making just 26 appearances to date and scoring only one goal for his current club.

What Fraser desperately needs now more than ever is to stay fit and get a run of games under his belt, starting tonight against Leeds. The Whites could actually be the perfect opposition for him to come into his own, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side usually involved in end-to-end games which rely on fast, direct players on either team to make the difference – the very reason why Fraser was brought to Tyneside.

In his real standout campaign with Bournemouth back in the 2018/19 season, Fraser racked up seven goals and a whopping 14 assists, proving that he can perform at this level when he’s fit and firing.

Tonight’s game at St James’ Park could be a great chance for him to show Newcastle fans what they thought they were getting when the Magpies signed him last year, and with Wilson already out injured, the return of one of the club’s other marquee additions from summer 2020 is a major boost.

His former Bournemouth teammate Eunan O’Kane said: “Ryan has got the world at his feet. He has taken him time to settle, but he has learnt a lot in the six months he has been here. For me he is a dream. I just give him the ball and stand behind him and let him do what he does. He is an outlet and can run with the ball and gives us a different option.”

Newcastle fans should be delighted at hearing a bit of positive news on the injury front, and Fraser could well lift the mood and be a game-changer tonight for the hitherto winless Magpies.

Meanwhile, Newcastle must drop this star against Leeds tonight…

Tottenham wanted £40m for Harry Winks

According to The Times, Tottenham Hotspur wanted £40m for Harry Winks this summer.

The Lowdown: Winks struggles continued

Winks made his Premier League debut just over five years ago and has racked up 177 appearances for Spurs since, scoring four goals and setting up another four.

The midfielder fell out of favour under former manager Jose Mourinho and started for the first time this season in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace, when he was replaced by Ben Davies after an hour.

The 25-year-old featured in only 860 minutes of Premier League football across 15 games last season and a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium nearly came through in the summer, only for Spurs’ asking price to detract prospective suitors.

The Latest: Clubs walking away

According to a report by The Times, Spurs wanted £40m for the England international and the price tag was the reason why Everton and Aston Villa walked away from pursuing him.

It is thought that Tottenahm’s asking price for the £18m-valued midfielder was too steep for a player who hasn’t played much in recent months.

The midfielder, who earns £91,000 per week, has stayed put at Tottenham for the time being, and after starting over the weekend, he could start featuring more regularly as the season progresses.

The Verdict: Time to move

Previously dubbed “amazing” by his former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, Winks hasn’t featured for England since the 4-0 UEFA Nations League group win over Iceland in November 2020, when he only played 26 minutes.

With an abundance of midfield options for Gareth Southgate to choose from in Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson to name a few, Winks could find it very difficult to break into the England XI even if he is recalled to the national team squad.

Whilst the price tag put on his services isn’t his fault, he either needs to rediscover the form which saw him called up by his country in the first place or else discuss his future with the club so that he can possibly broker a move elsewhere.

Abel elege primeiro tempo como o melhor do ano e descarta time misto

Hayden dropped from one-day squads

Matthew Hayden is clinging to his international career after being told he is not in Australia’s limited-overs plans

Matthew Hayden is clinging to his international career after being told he is not in Australia’s limited-overs plans. Hayden, who had an awful Test summer of 149 runs at 16.55, was omitted as the selectors looked to players who could be part of the World Twenty20 in England in June and the 2011 World Cup.Despite his poor returns since overcoming a long-term heel injury, Hayden has won team support to push on to the Ashes. However, Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, has softened his stance by refusing to say Hayden is a certainty for the series in South Africa starting next month.”We are moving on,” Hilditch said of the decision in Sydney. “There is no doubt our advance plans were for Matthew to go through to the Ashes. That would be our ideal outcome. We’ve got to sit down as a panel to make a decision whether it’s still the way to go.”Hayden said he would take his time while deciding what to do next. “My immediate future is to go back home to my family and the people that love me the most and just enjoy this time, to take guard again,” Hayden told the Australian. “It’s been a pretty long last four months. I am going to take the time to get my mind around what the future does hold.”However, Hayden said he would play out the summer and would continue with Queensland. “When you are short of runs you have to start asking questions and they [the selectors] do that better than anyone,” he said. “For my mind it’s as simple as being committed to playing out the summer and then taking the time to either get back on the horse or make a decision not to. It’s as clear cut as that.”Hilditch said Hayden was “not particularly happy” when told of his sacking. “I have no idea what he’s going to do,” Hilditch said. “My feeling is he will go and play for Queensland and make sure he gets on the South African tour.”Hayden scored 31 and 39 in the third Test victory and will have to wait until early February to learn whether he remains part of the five-day squad. Twenty20 engagements fill most of the domestic calendar this month but there is a round of Sheffield Shield games before the squad will be finalised.Hilditch said dropping Hayden from the one-day squad was not linked to his performances over the past six months. “This would have been the decision whatever Matthew was doing in Test cricket,” Hilditch said. “It’s unfortunate for Matthew and it wasn’t an easy thing to tell him.”The last of Hayden’s 161 one-day matches came in the finals loss to India in the CB Series last March. He scored 6133 runs, with his best being the Australian-record 181 against New Zealand in 2007, and was a star of the following World Cup success, thrashing 659 runs at 73.22. He was also part of the 2003 victory in South Africa.Australia will play Twenty20 games against South Africa in Melbourne on Sunday and Brisbane on Tuesday before the five-match one-day international series begins at the MCG on Friday. David Warner, the New South Wales batsman, has been called in to the squad while Ryan Harris, the Queensland allrounder, is another new face.Michael Clarke will miss the shorter games due to ligament damage to his right thumb, which he sustained during the first Test in Perth, but is hopeful of being fit for the ODI campaign. Mitchell Johnson has been rested until the third CB Series fixture due to his heavy workload since the India tour.Twenty20 squad Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Hussey, David Hussey, Ben Hilfenhaus, James Hopes, Nathan Bracken, Brad Haddin (wk), Shaun Marsh, Shaun Tait, David Warner, Ryan Harris, Cameron White, Nathan Hauritz.One-day squad Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin (wk), James Hopes, Nathan Bracken, Shaun Marsh, Michael Hussey, David Hussey, Nathan Hauritz, Ben Hilfenhaus, Cameron White, Shaun Tait, Peter Siddle.

Fulham dealt Fabio Carvalho injury blow

Fulham have been dealt a big blow regarding the fitness of Fabio Carvalho ahead of their upcoming Championship clash.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by West London Sport, Marco Silva revealed that the 19-year-old will once again be unavailable for selection this weekend, as the attacking midfielder is yet to recover from a toe injury picked up in the Cottagers’ 2-0 win over Hull City back in August.

Speaking about the former England under-18 international’s current condition, the manager said: “Fabio’s started running on the pitch; but it’s longer than I expected and wanted, to be honest. He took some steps back and we want to make sure he doesn’t step back again. We hope next week he can start working with the team.”

Silva will be gutted

Considering the fact that Fulham have now lost three of the four fixtures for which Carvalho has been sidelined, the teenager’s absence for the trip to Bristol City on Saturday is sure to have left Silva gutted.

Indeed, the 19-year-old had impressed over his five Championship appearances so far this season, with the £225k-rated man scoring three goals, registering one assist and creating two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking 2.4 shots and making 2.2 key passes per game (SofaScore).

These returns have seen the player who Silva himself dubbed a “quality” talent earn an average SofaScore match rating of 7.30, ranking him as the club’s joint-third best performer in the second tier of English football.

As such, the continued absence of the attacking midfielder is sure to dent the west Londoners’ chances of leaving Ashton Gate with all three points on Saturday, something which is evident from the club’s record without the youngster in the team so far this season.

No meio, ele testou Wagner e Escudero.
