Ismael must unleash West Brom’s Reach vs SHU

While it would be unfair to say that West Bromwich Albion’s season has not got off to a decent start, with Valerien Ismael’s picking up four points from a possible six, there are still clear areas of the pitch which the Frenchman could do with working on.

A 2-2 draw against a Bournemouth side that will undoubtedly be there or thereabouts in the promotion race come May and a 3-2 victory against Nathan Jones’ impressive Luton Town outfit are fine results indeed, although Ismael’s life would be much more stress-free if his Albion side were able to reduce the number of goals they are currently shipping.

However, looking at the statistics from West Brom’s last two Championship fixtures, the problem does not appear to overly lie with the Baggies defenders, but more in central midfield and at left wing-back.

Indeed, Jake Livermore is currently averaging a rather disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.60 in the league, while Conor Townsend had something of a game to forget despite the victory over Luton.

As such, there would appear to be an obvious solution to this problem ahead of the heavyweight clash against Sheffield United on Wednesday evening – Adam Reach.

Game changer

With the former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder having been something of a surprise addition for West Brom this summer, upon closer inspection, it would actually seem as if Reach is exactly the sort of player Ismael loves to have in his squad.

Shortly after his arrival at The Hawthorns, the French manager claimed that he doesn’t need to sign “the most expensive player or the best player” in the transfer market, but rather the “right player for the position,” something that would go a long way to explaining the 28-year-old’s signing.

Reach’s versatility – being able to operate comfortably in any position along the left-hand side of the pitch, as well as in central midfield – is most likely viewed as a huge plus for Ismael, while the £23k-per-week man’s ability in both attack and defence could prove to be game-changing against the Blades on Wednesday.

Indeed, over his 44 Championship appearances for Wednesday last term, the £2.52m-rated Reach scored five goals, registered three assists and created five big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.3 shots and making 0.8 key passes per game.

The man Chey Dunkley dubbed a “leader” also impressed in a defensive capacity, making an average of 0.9 interceptions, one tackle, one clearance and winning 2.8 duels per match.

These metrics saw the versatile midfielder earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.82, ranking him as Darren Moore’s sixth-best player in the second tier of English football.

As such, in a bid to shore Albion up against a side who, despite a slow start to the season, will more than likely be one of West Brom’s main promotion rivals this season, it would appear wise to unleash Reach at left wing-back, as the 28-year-old appears to be far more suited to the role than Townsend.

Meanwhile, Ismael could solve a major West Brom issue with this star…

Lance Klusener won’t be offered a new contract by Northamptonshire after the club said they want to increase the number of England qualified players on the staff.Klusener, 37, joined as a Kolpak signing in 2006 and has been a consistent performer, especially with the bat. This season he has scored 1095 runs at 73, after his first-innings duck against Essex, including a career-best 202 not out.”Lance has had another excellent Championship season and no one can doubt his determination and application for the team,” chief executive, Mark Tagg, said. “The club, however, has to look forward to the future. With the game going through significant changes over the next couple of years it is important that Northamptonshire are positioned to play a full role both developing talent for the county and hopefully full international duty.”We have consistently stated our desire to increase the number of England qualified players beyond this season and especially provide real opportunity for the talent that the academy is producing”.Offspinner Jason Brown has also been released after 12 years with the club. His success in Championship cricket has diminished since his best return of 66 wickets at 23.71 in 2006. This season he has taken just nine wickets in nine Championship matches. After a haul of 61 wickets in the 2000 season he was named in the England squad to tour Sri Lanka in 2000-01, but couldn’t force his way past Ashley Giles and Robert Croft into the starting XI. It was the closest he came to international recognition.”This was a difficult decision for the club to make given Jason’s commitment and dedication to the club over many years,” Tagg said. “However, it was felt that this was the right time for both parties and gives Jason an opportunity of potentially continuing his career elsewhere while enabling younger players to develop at Northamptonshire.”

Traore options limited as Spurs in contention

According to Eurosport, Wolverhampton Wanderers star Adama Traore is running out of options for a summer move away from Molineux so it ‘may come down’ to Tottenham Hotspur or Leeds United.

The Lowdown: Spurs in Traore hunt…

Separate sources indicate that the 25-year-old is a target for Spurs and managing director Fabio Paratici as they enter the last hurdle of this summer’s transfer window.

Diario AS believe that head coach Nuno Espirito Santo especially wants to reunite with his former player in north London, meanwhile Sky Sports back there is certainly interest in Traore.

Now, Eurosport reporter Dean Jones believes Spurs may just be one of the only viable destinations for him.

The Latest: Spurs or Leeds touted as favourites…

Indeed, it is claimed that Traore may have no choice but to join Spurs or Leeds this summer if Traore is looking to seal a summer move away.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It may come down to one of the two clubs as they are touted as favourites and still in contention, with Liverpool having financial reservations and Crystal Palace no longer interested.

Rated at around £40 million according to this report, Wolves are apparently open to selling this summer if they receive a suitable offer around that margin.

The Verdict: Do it Paratici?

Lauded as ‘undefendable’ by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp at the back end of last season (Liverpool Echo), Spurs boss Nuno has also lavished his former man with praise – calling Traore ‘amazing’ and ‘unique’ (The Athletic).

Traore’s price tag has also significantly dropped when compared to last year, with reports around that time indicating he cost as much as €100 million (£85.3m).

Compared to the Spaniard, no player across England’s top flight completed more successful dribbles per 90 over 2020/2021 (4.1) – highlighting his real attacking threat.

At just £40m, we believe he could be a real snip for Spurs.

Leicester miss out on Noni Madueke

Leicester City’s summer transfer plans have been dealt a huge blow after PSV Eindhoven winger Noni Madueke extended his contract at the Philips Stadion until 2025.

What’s the story?

The Foxes have been heavily linked with a move for the 19-year-old throughout the current window, but he’s now set to stay with the Dutch giants for the foreseeable future.

Director of Football Affairs John de Jong expressed his delight that Madueke will stay longer in Eindhoven, saying: “There was a lot of interest from foreign clubs in Noni, but we wanted to connect Noni to PSV even longer.

“After good talks with Noni and his family, he succeeded in extending his contract until 2025. We as a club are very happy that Noni will stay, and we look forward to a successful collaboration.”

Leicester City fans will be gutted

Madueke arrived at PSV when he was just 16 after being released by boyhood club Tottenham Hotspur and has gone on to establish himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards since.

The London-born attacker contributed nine goals and eight assists in 32 appearances for Roger Schmidt’s charges last term, earning praise from several plaudits, including former PSV ace Tommie van de Leegte.

“He’s fast and has the capability to trick his opponent. He brings creativity and is very explosive in his actions,” said Van de Leegte (via Goal).

And after an incredible start to the new campaign saw him contribute to seven goals in just nine outings in all competitions, a move back to his homeland was widely tipped for the England Under-21 international.

However, Madueke’s decision to put pen to paper on fresh terms means a move to the Premier League is off the cards for the £14.4m-rated wizard, likely leaving Leicester fans gutted.

The departures of Rachid Ghezzal and Cengiz Under have left an ageing Marc Albrighton as the only natural right-winger in Brendan Rodgers’ first-team squad, but the Northern Irish tactician will be forced to move onto his next transfer target following Madueke’s decision to stay put.

Rejuvenated Rogers inspired by Katich

Chris Rogers will take his lead from Simon Katich this summer as he aims to force his way back into contention for the Test team less than a year after making his debut

Chris Rogers will take his lead from Simon Katich this summer as he aims to force his way back into contention for the Test team less than a year after making his debut. Rogers has not given up hope of adding to his one Test cap despite losing his Cricket Australia contract for 2008-09.During the off-season Rogers, 31, switched from Western Australia to Victoria after he became increasingly frustrated by what he felt was a lack of support from the Warriors, who regularly overlooked him for their one-day side. He has spent the winter with Derbyshire and has been one of the leading scorers in the County Championship, and he hopes it will be the spark he needs to restart his international career.”Right now, you look at [Phil] Jaques, [Matthew] Hayden and Katich and there doesn’t seem to be much room,” Rogers told the Sydney Morning Herald. “But then you look at someone like Katich or David Hussey, and you see that with hard work and consistency, you can make it back. Katto is a real inspiration. He’s set a precedent I now need to follow.”An injury to Hayden opened the door for Rogers to play the Perth Test against India last season. He scored 4 and 15 but was unhappy with where his cricket was heading at the time, and a week later he found himself playing grade cricket because Western Australia did not want him in their limited-overs side.”I was very upset. I had just gone from playing in front of thousands of people in a big Test to Joondalup in a week,” he said. “I found it emotionally hard to deal with. I turned up right as the first ball was being bowled, which I’m not very proud of.”I ended up coming into bat at No. 7, was in just before lunch, and ended up getting 150-odd. I remember that morning I had been speaking to my dad and saying, ‘This isn’t what I want. I don’t know if I can deal with this’.”He finished the domestic season with a solid but not outstanding collection of runs, whereas Katich’s record-breaking summer earned him the backup batting spot for the West Indies tour. Further Hayden injuries meant Katich opened in the Caribbean and he scored two centuries to make Rogers’ task even more difficult.Katich was named in the squad for the upcoming tour of India and with Shane Watson, David Hussey and Brad Hodge all remaining on the fringes of the national side, Rogers will face a tough road back. However, he hopes the move to Victoria will reinvigorate him and help him return to the form that saw him top the Pura Cup run tally in 2006-07.”Things are clearer now,” Rogers said. “I need to score runs and be consistent. I’m more comfortable with myself again.”
