Pundit disappointed in Harry Kane missing Tottenham training

Carlton Palmer has exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that Harry Kane should honour his contract at Tottenham amid reports that he missed training on Monday morning.

Following a three-week break since England’s defeat to Italy in the Euro’s final, the Three Lions captain was expected to report back to Spurs’ Hotspur Way training base for the rest of pre-season.

Like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso, who won the Copa America with Argentina, Kane had been given extra time off to rest himself ahead of Tottenham’s Premier League opener against Man City on Sunday week.

However, according to Sky Sports News, Kane decided against showing up to training, which would suggest that he’s trying to force his way out of the club this summer and join the champions.

Kane currently has three years remaining on the six-year contract he signed back in 2018, but has already told Tottenham he wants to leave, with City, Manchester United and Chelsea all interested in his services.

And Palmer told The Transfer Tavern that he’d be disappointed in Kane’s actions should the rumours of him missing training turn out to be true:

“Well, this is just a rumour that he’s not reported for training. It’s not fact, yet. I don’t know how that’s going to force the issue on how to get the move.

“I don’t believe in players doing that, you should honour your contract. Just because another club makes an offer, that doesn’t give you the right to go on strike or force the move.

“I’d be very disappointed for the captain of England and a leading motor of the Premier League for him to be doing that. It creates a problem for Spurs.”

Liverpool: Interest in Ben Davies confirmed

Sheffield United manager Slavisa Jokanovic has confirmed his club’s interest in signing Liverpool centre-back Ben Davies.

The lowdown

Liverpool spent £2million to bring Davies to Anfield in the January transfer window. It was something of an emergency signing, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all sidelined until the end of the season (via BBC Sport).

Davies, though, didn’t see a minute of action in the latter half of the campaign, sitting behind Nathaniel Phillips, Rhys Williams and loanee Ozan Kabak in Jurgen Klopp’s pecking order.

He did don the Liverpool shirt at the beginning of pre-season, featuring in a 30-minute mini-game against Austrian outfit Wacker Innsbruck, but he’s since returned to the UK to address a personal matter.

According to journalist David Lynch, the Reds are keen to arrange a permanent exit for the 25-year-old but accept that a loan deal is more likely.

The latest

Speaking ahead of United’s Championship season opener against Birmingham City, Jokanovic said (via Yorkshire Live): “Yes, I am interested in both players [the second being Sampdoria midfielder Ronaldo Vieira].

“People are on their way. We move and are expecting in these next few hours there can be some news.

“We are in different battles, but I hope we will bring in as soon as possible a new addition into the squad.”

The verdict

If a sale isn’t possible this summer, then Liverpool should look to line one up next year. They could do so by inserting a clause into the loan whereby the Blades would have to sign Davies if he played a certain number of games over the course of the season.

He cost just £2million but that was largely because he had only six months left to run on his deal. On the ability and experience he’s shown in the second tier, you’d think the Reds could at least double their money if he impresses on a temporary deal.

If Davies is to go elsewhere, Liverpool should ensure they keep Phillips around as an insurance option in the event of another injury pile-up.

Clark wobbles Windies on tricky pitch

If there were any doubts how important Ricky Ponting’s first-day 158 was to this match, they evaporated on the second day as batsmen from both sides struggled and Stuart Clark and Fidel Edwards thrived on the unpredictable pitch

If there were any doubts how important Ricky Ponting’s first-day 158 was to this match, they evaporated on the second day as batsmen from both sides struggled and Stuart Clark and Fidel Edwards thrived on the unpredictable pitch. Only Andrew Symonds, who made an unbeaten and entertaining 70, looked like mastering the up-and-down surface and by the close West Indies were wishing they had not given the visitors such a head-start.Clark’s three wickets late in the day left West Indies at 115 for 3 at stumps with Shivnarine Chanderpaul on 25 and Runako Morton on 23. Their 47-run partnership was important in steadying West Indies, who need a further 117 to avoid the follow-on after Symonds pushed Australia to 431. In a way the home side was lucky; Clark was the only one of Australia’s bowlers to find his rhythm and the scorecard could have been more worrying for West Indies had Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson and Stuart MacGill fired.Instead Lee was unusually out of step, figuratively and literally as he sent down six no-balls including three in one over, although a couple of his deliveries that stayed low caused major concerns for the batsmen. Johnson shared the new ball with Lee and was wayward, spraying across the right-handers and failing to find any swing, while MacGill spun the ball prodigiously but dropped too short too often. It was not until Clark’s strikes that West Indies’ top order began to battle. They had started confidently, in particular Devon Smith, who was searching for his first Test half-century in 17 innings. He looked ready to break the drought that began at the Gabba in November 2005, rattling along to 32 with some vicious square cuts off Johnson. But Clark’s nagging line troubled Smith and he was bowled off his pad, sparking a mini-collapse as they lost 3 for 21 in seven overs.Ramnaresh Sarwan became Brad Haddin’s first Test victim when Clark surprised the batsman with extra bounce and Sarwan’s attempted cut turned into a top edge that Haddin grasped at head height. Haddin added another when Brenton Parchment, softened up by a Clark ball that jagged back sharply and hit him in the groin, wafted at the next delivery, which pitched in the same spot but moved away.Whereas Clark’s consistency was the problem for West Indies, earlier in the day it was Fidel Edwards’ speed and swing that troubled several Australians. Edwards sparked a rejuvenated West Indies – their bowlers were confident, their fielders were brilliant – with 5 for 104 that ended Australia’s hopes of a 500-plus total. But things had already slipped away from the home side through Ponting’s first-day efforts and West Indies slipped further due to some late slogs from Symonds.By the time he had the comically inept MacGill at the other end, Symonds decided one-day mode was the only option and he brought up his half-century with a brutal bottom-hand aerial drive to long on, where the ball burst through the hands of Sarwan on the rope and over for six. He picked up 16 off that Darren Sammy over, and later deposited Edwards for six more wide of long on. Edwards finally removed MacGill’s middle stump to end the frustration of a 32-run last wicket stand and bring him his sixth five-wicket haul in Tests. It was a well-deserved result for Edwards, who was far and away the most threatening bowler in the absence of the injured Jerome Taylor. Edwards should also have had a key victim earlier in the day when Symonds somehow survived an lbw shout on 18 from the first delivery after lunch. Russell Tiffin had worked himself into the habit of saying “not out” – albeit correctly – through the first four sessions and he finally got one wrong when Edwards found late swing that struck Symonds in line. When Edwards did get a reward from Tiffin it was in unusual fashion as Lee ducked what should have been a steepling bouncer, but it stayed so low it struck him on the thigh as he took evasive action. Although Lee was upset at getting out for 4 the thought of bowling on such a surface must have pleased him.The worrying wear on the pitch prompted Tiffin to give Edwards two warnings for running down the middle during the first session but the cautions proved a bonus for the bowler. He came wider of the crease to fix the problem and the angle in, combined with some extra bounce, cramped Brad Hodge (67) as he tried to cut square and a thick edge from high on the bat flew to the diving Denesh Ramdin. It was one of a series of magnificent efforts from West Indies in the field; bodies were repeatedly thrown around athletically to save runs and Dwayne Bravo completed his second screamer of the match when he hurled himself to his right at mid on to remove Clark. A more straightforward chance for Ramdin ended Haddin’s first Test innings when he tried to pull and tickled a catch through off Sammy when the ball failed to rise as much as the batsman expected.Even at that early stage, just before lunch, the pitch was a threat and as it wears on it could become a minefield. Enthusiasm in the field is one thing, but it will take remarkable resolve from Chanderpaul or one of his colleagues for West Indies to escape their predicament.

Villa can get Nakamba upgrade in Cheick Doucoure

Aston Villa could sign an exciting upgrade on Marvelous Nakamba in Lens midfielder Cheick Doucoure.

What’s the story?

According to Goal France journalist Marc Mechenoua, both Villa and Serie A club Atalanta have reached out to the 21-year-old’s representatives over a move this summer.

It’s added that the two clubs are keeping tabs on the Mali international, although a formal offer for the midfield dynamo has yet to be made from either of the prospective suitors.

Far better than Nakamba

Last month, the The Daily Mail reported that both Everton and Crystal Palace are interested in signing Nakamba before the transfer window closes.

If the Zimbabwe international were to leave, or indeed if he stays put, Dean Smith could land a real upgrade on him in Doucoure.

As per WhoScored, the Lens ace averaged an impressive 2.6 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per game in Ligue 1 last season, which is far better than Nakamba’s 1.9 and 1.3 per match in the Premier League respectively.

It’s not just defensively that Doucoure appears to be much better, also boasting more shots, key passes and dribbles per match than the Villa midfielder, and averaging a greater number of passes at a better accuracy as well.

In a profile piece done by SempreMilan, the £12.7m-rated powerhouse is said to be a: “midfielder (who) never backs down from a duel and is completely fearless. He’s strong, smart, and is a brilliant reader of his opponents.

“He has the eye to anticipate and shut down some attacks before they have even started, which is backed up by his great record of interceptions, and he will hunt his opponent down like a hungry terrier if they get past him.”

Given his age, and the numbers suggesting that he is better than Nakamba in many key areas, Doucoure looks like the kind of player Smith should be seeking to bring in at Villa Park this summer.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa have made a late move to sign this starlet…

Dyson urges players to curb aggression

After slumping to a 5-0 series whitewash to Australia on Sunday, John Dyson, the West Indies coach, wants his players to adopt the style of their opponents

After slumping to a 5-0 series whitewash to Australia on Sunday, John Dyson, the West Indies coach, wants his players to move away from their way of playing cricket and instead adopt the style of the Australians.Dyson emphasised that his team would get no better unless they curbed their aggression and played with a more clinical approach. “The first step is for the players to embrace the concept that we need to change some things about our game,” Dyson said. “Up until now, I don’t think a lot of them have. We play the West Indies way. We bowl aggressively. We bat aggressively. We field aggressively.”When you analyse what all that means, you start to realise that every now and then you win doing that, but against the better sides that approach it more clinically, it’s not going to happen.”Dyson has enjoyed mixed results since taking over last year. The series defeat, including a massive 169-run loss in the final ODI, was among the lowest points in his tenure. In calling for his players to emulate the Australians, Dyson pointed to a few examples.”Teams like Australia build pressure by bowling many dot balls. They make it very difficult to score,” he said. “Since the South Africa tour, I’ve been told the West Indian way is not to do that. We are aggressive. We try and get people out. That’s fine, but you see the result of that. We have some good days and we have some shockers.”We have to accept that we need to change our approach to various things. The potential is there. We have some very talented players with lots of potential but to compete with teams at the top of the table, there are some changes that they need to accept they need to make to their game.”However, he cautioned that things can’t change overnight. “I am not a magician. I can’t just click my fingers and go . . . everything’s done. Take the Australian side, look at Luke Ronchi’s overall cricket CV and you will find that he had played a whole lot of good quality one-day cricket before getting here. He has been learning the basic skills for a long time. Unfortunately, we are getting players that have only played a handful of games in some cases.”
