Celtic: Hoops ‘moving’ for Aaron Hickey

Celtic are now ‘moving’ to sign Scottish left-back Aaron Hickey from Bologna, according to Il Resto del Carlino, cited by Sports Witness.

The Lowdown: Scottish claims

The Scottish Sun shared a story on Monday, suggesting the Hoops were closing in on a £3.5m deal for Hickey.

The report claimed that talks with Hickey could open this week, with Ange Postecoglou stepping up his interest in the 19-year-old.

Hickey moved to Bologna last summer from Hearts in a deal worth £1.8m but has made just 12 appearances for the Serie A side.

However, reports abroad don’t seem to be as confident of a deal being as far down the line.

The Latest: Italian report

According to Tuesday’s edition of local Bologna paper Il Resto del Carlino, cited by Sports Witness, both Celtic and Fiorentina ‘are moving’ to sign Hickey.

The Hoops value the defender at €4m (£3.4m), but Bologna have no intention to sell the Scot this summer.

Hickey, who is ranked 97th on CIES’ valuation list of big-5 league players born in the 2000s, the same list which includes Jadon Sancho, Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka, is valued at double that by the Italian side.

The Verdict: The end for Bolingoli?

It appears as if the Hoops are on the hunt for left-back reinforcements, so that could possibly spell the end for forgotten man Boli Bolingoli.

He’s travelled with the Hoops on their pre-season trip to Wales, however, he has been linked with a move to Turkish side Altay SK, who want to make the 25-year-old their first high-profile signing of the summer.

It might make sense to keep hold of Bolingoli until a left-back arrives in Glasgow, but if the Hoops are successful in their pursuit of Hickey, parting ways with Bolingoli for good could prove to be a smart piece of business.

Hungerford and United Services start with crushing wins

Any hopes that Lymington had of making a positive start to their Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 campaign was shattered by an 86-run defeat at Hungerford

Mike Vimpany05-May-2002Any hopes that Lymington had of making a positive start to their Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 campaign was shattered by an 86-run defeat at Hungerford.Relegated from the ECB-accredited Division 1 last summer, Hungerford have recruited heavily, with Hampshire’s Jason Laney, former Sussex wicketkeeper Nick Wilson and Steve Wyatt all returning to play under new skipper Owen Dawkins. It was all too much for Lymington, who found themselves looking down the barrell of a 250-run mauling from Hungerford, before being dismissed for 164 themselves.Laney (67) and Danny Williams (29) laid the foundations towards a big total with an opening stand of 80, which the middle-order gradually enhanced.Wyatt, with a lively 48, Wilson (25) and Dawkins (25) all profited, with Western Australian youngster Aaron Heal (3-50) removing three of the top six.But Lymington’s resourceful batting failed after left-arm spinner Andy Ford (2-26) had made two important early breakthroughs. Martin Hunt (43), Daniel Peacock (35) and Neil Trestrail (25) guided Lymington to 164 all out, with Laney (3-6) removing the lower-order.Newly promoted Winchester KS also endured a miserable start, losing by a massive 145-run margin against United Services at Burnaby Road. There was little joy for the cathedral city club as US built a sizeable 257-7 around Gary Hounsome (44), John Robson (40), John Mann (29), Mark Toogood (28) and Matt McKeever (28).Martin Taylor (4-35) made inroads for WKS, whose batting fell away badly with only Jimmy Taylor (26) making a worthwhile contribution in a disappointing 112 all out (Damian Carson 3-25).Andy Birch found himself demoted to eighth spot in the order, but turned out to be Easton & Martyr Worthy’s trump card in the three-wicket win at Trojans.Easton, chasing Trojans’ 181-7, were in trouble at 71-5, but Shaun Green (45) and Birch, with an undefeated 43, got the tractor boys home with an over to spare.Mark Stone took 3-33 but Trojans, through James Donaldson (35), Mike Goodall (30), Mario Mohammed (32) and Nigel le Bas (29) got to 181-7.Max Smith, with 58 not out, and Nick Wood, who took 4-38, were match winners in Old Tauntonians & Romsey’s 18-run victory over newly promoted Rowledge. Smith, Ian Tulk (45) and Mike Trodd (25) took the batting credits as OTs reached 196-6 (Ricky Yates 4-35).The Rowledge reply centred around Queenslander Jeff Annings (76), who was eventually eighth man out at 157.Cardiff UCCE’s Chris Yates (34) played well earlier on, but it was Wood’s flight and guile, supported by a handy 2-50 return by Smith, that left Rowledge 18 runs short on 178 all out.

Sheffield United keen on Matt Clarke

Sheffield United have previously been credited with interest in signing Brighton and Hove Albion defender Matt Clarke, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

What’s the story?

The £21k-a-week earning Clarke has been with the Seagulls since 2019, but has found regular game time with the Premier League side hard to come by in recent seasons.

The 24-year-old spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan with Championship strugglers Derby County, and evidently made a good impression whilst with Wayne Rooney’s side.

Clarke made 44 appearances in total for the Rams, as they narrowly avoided relegation into the third tier of English football on the final day of the campaign.

The defender is contracted with Brighton and Hove Albion until the summer of 2023, although it remains to be seen as to whether he’ll see out the remainder of his contract at the AMEX Stadium.

Nixon claims that Sheffield United could have funds available to sign Clarke this summer, which could move them ahead of Derby County in the race to strike a deal for the defender.

It could be a shrewd move by the Blades

Sheffield United will be hoping the can make a serious push for promotion back into the Premier League at the first time of asking, whilst under the watchful eye of Slavisa Jokanovic, who was appointed as their new manager over the summer.

The Blades endured a hugely frustrating campaign last term, as they finished bottom of the top-flight standings, whilst struggling for any sort of momentum in last year’s campaign, much to the frustration of the Bramall Lane faithful.

But they’ve got every reason to be confident heading into the new season, with the majority of the first-team squad sticking around so far in the summer transfer window, and with new additions likely in the coming weeks, they could be even stronger than last term.

Jokanovic will be keen strengthen his squad at the earliest of opportunities as well, and players that have shown they can perform to a high standard in the Championship should be top of his priority list.

The 24-year-old averaged 1.4 tackles per game, whilst also averaging 4.3 clearances a game. Clarke has also shown that he’s also comfortable whilst in possession, with the Seagulls defender averaging just over 52 passes per game whilst on loan with Derby County last season.

With Phil Jagielka leaving the club over the summer, additional strength in depth is needed at Sheffield United, and Clarke would certainly provide them with that. If the defender is going to struggle for consistent minutes with Brighton and Hove Albion again this season, then you couldn’t blame Clarke if he was to look at a move elsewhere in search of regular game time.

Sheffield United need players with a point to prove, and Clarke certainly fits that description, and if he can hit the ground running, then he could turn out to be the missing piece in Sheffield United’s promotion jigsaw this season.

Pundit backs Leeds to sign Mikkel Damsgaard

Joe Wainman has offered his verdict on Leeds United’s pursuit of Sampdoria maestro Mikkel Damsgaard…

What’s the talk?

The Leeds pundit has said that the 21-year-old should be the club’s number one transfer target this summer, ahead of Hertha Berlin’s Matheus Cunha, although he admitted that a deal is unlikely at this stage.

The Lillywhites are among a number of clubs touted with a move for the Danish forward, along with the likes of Tottenham, Liverpool and Everton.

Wainman told his YouTube channel, as transcribed by This is Futbol: “The figures that are getting mentioned, £20m, £25m, £30m, £35m, for me, Damsgaard doesn’t make the move.

“Out of all the wingers that we’ve been linked to, Damsgaard would be the one for me, even over Mateus Cunha, 21-year-old, this kid will go to the very top, the very, very top.

“I just don’t see that move to Leeds United, but listen, if the links are genuine, and there is something in that then Victor Orta, you know, maybe he’s over in Denmark now, maybe he’s frying up some Danish bacon and trying to convince Mikkel Damsgaard to come to Leeds United I don’t know, fingers crossed.

“I mean, I don’t think [he will], but you never know.”

Bielsa would be on cloud nine

Victor Orta must now sanction a swoop for Damsgaard this summer. Although he could cost up to £35m, as Wainman suggests, it could be a terrific piece of business by Leeds.

The Denmark international is a talented young prospect who has already proven his quality at the highest level and could be a key player for years to come at Elland Road if the Whites bring him in.

Damsgaard caught the eye at the European Championship for his country, scoring twice and setting up one goal as he averaged an excellent WhoScored rating of 7.28 across five appearances. For context, Raphinha’s score of 7.22 was the highest by any Leeds player in the Premier League last term.

That suggests that the Dane could be an upgrade on what Bielsa already has at Elland Road, which could leave the Argentine coach on cloud nine if Leeds manage to fend off the strong competition for him.

Danish football expert Martin Mikkelsen hailed Damsgaard as “magical” earlier this year and said that he is capable of switching up his game and going both ways as an attacker.

He told TV2 Sport: “It’s the season’s assist. Isn’t that where we are? He’s magical – what a speed! It is fantastic improvisation, and he just finds Balde in the field, as they both know what is going to happen.

“It is a free space he has, as he is not so locked. He is dynamic and can go both ways. He is creative but also so mature in his decisions. Was it something we dreamed of? It’s awesome.”

He also has plenty of years left to develop and grow as a player, as he only turned 21 earlier this month. This could give Bielsa the opportunity to mould him into becoming the perfect player for his system at Leeds, helping him realise his full potential if Damsgaard moves to Elland Road.

Therefore, Orta must get a deal over the line for the forward, as he could be a superb signing with whom Bielsa would love to work, potentially developing him into a top-class footballer for years to come.

AND in other news, Leeds must act quickly to land “fantastic” £39k-p/w gem, he’s an upgrade on Harrison…
