Aston Villa: Fans react to John Percy post

A number of Aston Villa fans have been reacting to John Percy’s post regarding Manchester City’s interest in Aston Villa star Jack Grealish.

Reports on Friday morning from talkSPORT suggested that City were closing in on a £100m move for the 25-year-old. As to be expected, that left a number of Villa supporters worried, but two hours on from Jim White’s post, Percy gave his take on the situation.

The reliable reporter, who writes for The Telegraph, admitted that City have a genuine interest in Grealish. He added [via Twitter] that Villa intend to keep hold of the attacking midfielder and are in talks over a new contract, saying:

“Manchester City have a genuine interest in Jack Grealish and are set to make their move.. but #avfc are intent on keeping him at the club, with talks ongoing over a new contract. Villa’s owners are ambitious and serious about continuing the club’s progress”

Grealish’s current Villa deal is thought to be worth £120,000 per week until 2025, but it seems as if the club’s owners are willing to improve on that in order to keep him in the Midlands. His importance to the team is evident in his status as captain, along with his provision of 16 goal contributions in the league last season, second only to Ollie Watkins (WhoScored).

Calculators take centre stage for the last day

The State Championship will go down to the last day of the last match of the season, courtesy of a thundering Auckland first-innings middle-order crash

Chris Rosie26-Mar-2002The State Championship will go down to the last day of the last match of the season, courtesy of a thundering Auckland first-innings middle-order crash.Four wickets for six runs sent the championship leaders reeling from a comfortable 129/2 to a precarious 135/6.They never really recovered – and that set off a rush to the calculators as the net runs per wicket prospect that had hovered over this match reared its ugly head. With the fall of the ninth wicket at 215/9, still 44 behind the follow-on mark, Auckland looked at the numbers and declared. Wellington, also looking at the mathematical options, decided to bat again rather than enforce the follow-on. They ended the day on 10 for one when bad light brought matters to an early close, 204 ahead and setting up the prospect of a fascinating day.A morning session in which honours were even at 96/2 gave no indication of the drama pending. The opener Tim McIntosh and all-rounder Sanjeewa Silva had looked comfortable as they developed a third-wicket partnership that threatened to finally douse the slim Wellington title hopes. However, they had not counted on the accuracy of the first change medium pacer Iain O’Brien and the left-arm spin of Luke Woodcock. In four overs in the middle of the afternoon, Woodcock sent back the big pair, Silva for 33 and McIntosh a confident looking 68, ending the partnership at 78, while O’Brien gave neither Tama Canning nor the debutant Matt Cairns time to settle.O’Brien ended the day with three for 41 off 21 overs and Woodcock two for 33 from 15 to be the pick of the Welllington bowlers. The Auckland captain Brooke Walker and the in-form Rob Nicol led a slow fight back until Walker’s demise on the last ball before tea for 10 at 163/7. There was a flurry of action from Andre Adams (16) after tea to take it to 195/8 before his departure, O’Brien’s third wicket of the day.Nicol soldiered on with the assistance of Reece Young but a mid-pitch mix up leading to Nicol’s run out for 42 really set the calculators going. At 215/9, Walker declared, balancing the number of runs his last wicket pair might produce against the effect on the average runs per wicket rate of the quick loss of the last wicket.Wellington’s calculations are unlikely to have included the early departure of Chris Nevin, caught off Gareth Shaw by Canning at the single slip Auckland had in place to supplement the four boundary riders charged with keeping the runs down. The Auckland collapse and the various mathematical permutations have set up a last day of the competition that a final would have been hard pressed to match.

Bull reveals transfer fee for Wolves to sell Traore - Exclusive

Adama Traore divides opinion amongst Wolves fans and neutrals with some seeing him as a great talent with defenders unable to get near him, whereas others see him as a winger who runs down blind alleys with no end ball.

Despite his often shortcomings, Wolves legend Steve Bull believes it will cost £75 million for him to leave this summer.

Traore was an ever-present under Nuno Espirito Santo, especially last season with the injuries to Raul Jimenez, Daniel Podence and Pedro Neto leaving the Spaniard as the only Premier League proven attacker as he ended up missing just one game.

There has been talk of Thomas Tuchel looking at the Spain international this summer as an alternative to Achraf Hakimi, who looks set for PSG, but after his relatively brief showing at right back for Spain against Slovakia, he wouldn’t have done anything to fill his potential new manager with joy.

His raw pace and willingness to drive at defenders and get his team further up the pitch can be a valuable asset for whichever team he’s playing for next season, but he certainly won’t come cheap as Wolves legend Steve Bull explained exclusively to Transfer Tavern:

“If Harry Kane is worth £120 million then Traore is worth £70-75 million easily and if the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea need a goal in the last 10 minutes of a game then he could get it for them.”

The Spaniard will be disappointed with his time at the Euros thus far for Spain as he failed to get off the bench in their previous two games and was handed just 14 minutes in their commanding 5-0 win over Slovakia on Wednesday.

The £43,000 per week winger would likely love a move to Chelsea especially if his role is going to differ a huge amount or is not fancied under Lage as his talent is undoubted when he’s on top of his game and Leeds’ Director of Football, Victor Orta, once claimed he could be the best talent in Spain during his time at Barcelona.

Changing of guard reflected in new contract list

The changing of the guard in Australia’s international playing ranks has received further expression today with an unprecedented seven revisions made to the annual list of Australian Cricket Board (ACB) contract holders.

John Polack01-May-2002The changing of the guard in Australia’s international playing ranks has received further expression today with an unprecedented seven revisions made to the annual list of Australian Cricket Board (ACB) contract holders. After a season that saw sweeping changes to the personnel in the country’s one-day international side, a number of long-serving international players have surrendered their status as contract holders to several members of the new wave of cricketers beginning to make their mark in Australia.Queensland off spinner Nathan Hauritz and batsman Jimmy Maher, Tasmanian all-rounder Shane Watson, and Western Australian paceman Brad Williams head the list of newcomers, continuing their accession into elite company by securing places on the annual contract list for the first time.Western Australian opening batsman Mike Hussey is also among today’s winners after being recalled to a list on which he won inclusion for a single 12-month period two years ago.And confirmation of Queensland fast bowler Andy Bichel’s status as one of Australia’s leading contemporary players has similarly been provided with his recall to the full list for the first time in two years. Bichel was not included on last year’s original list, and only formally won back his contract after appearing in three successive Test matches for Australia during the 2001-02 international season.New South Wales paceman Stuart Clark has meanwhile added to the sense of change by supplanting Ashley Noffke as the ‘bolter’ in this year’s field and gaining a contract at the end of his first full season of first-class cricket. A tall, accurate right armer, Clark captured 45 first-class wickets to be a standout player at domestic level in 2001-02, after appearing in a total of only 10 first-class games to that point of his career.”The contract will give me some extra confidence going into the new season because I’ll know that I’m in the selectors eyes for higher honours in the future,” said Clark of his elevation today.”I have been in the mix for a Blues pace bowling spot for a while, but it was only this year that I was able to grab my opportunities.”I was happy with my form and consistency in both forms of the game last season and hopefully I can continue that for the Blues next year.”Alongside Noffke, those out of favour in the shake-up are former international players Michael Slater, Damien Fleming, Colin Miller, Greg Blewett, Simon Katich and Shane Lee.New South Wales, with eight representatives, remains the state with the most players on the list. Queensland’s increasingly strong contribution to national squads has also been reflected with the inclusion of six of its players, while Western Australia maintains a significant presence of its own with five. Two players are included from each of the three remaining states, ensuring that the 2002-03 list contains the lowest number of Victorian representatives since the central contract system was formally introduced three years ago.The 25 elite ACB contracts have come to represent hotly contested property in Australian cricket circles over recent seasons. Each of the contracts now offers its holder a base salary of $A110,000 as well as providing recognition of the player’s place among the core group of cricketers from which Australian Test and one-day international teams will be selected over the following 12-month period. In accordance with a formula specified in the compact between the ACB and the country’s player-representative body, the Australian Cricketers’ Association, the highest ranked player among the group of 25 will receive a salary of $440,000 as his base income for the next year. The full list of 2002-03 ACB contracted players is: Michael Bevan (NSW), Andy Bichel (Qld), Nathan Bracken (NSW), Stuart Clark (NSW), Adam Gilchrist (WA), Jason Gillespie (SA), Ian Harvey (Vic), Nathan Hauritz (Qld), Matthew Hayden (Qld), Mike Hussey (WA), Justin Langer (WA), Brett Lee (NSW), Darren Lehmann (SA), Martin Love (Qld), Stuart MacGill (NSW), Glenn McGrath (NSW), Jimmy Maher (Qld), Damien Martyn (WA), Ricky Ponting (Tas), Andrew Symonds (Qld), Shane Warne (Vic), Shane Watson (Tas), Mark Waugh (NSW), Steve Waugh (NSW), Brad Williams (WA).

Exclusive: Bent on James’ Everton future

Marcus Bent has backed Everton to cash in on James Rodriguez during the summer transfer window.

The Colombia international made the move to Goodison Park from Spanish giants Real Madrid last September, reportedly for no transfer fee, linking up with Carlo Ancelotti for the second time in his career.

Rodriguez’s arrival excited Everton’s fans, but the 2014 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot winner saw his progress on Merseyside hampered by a string of injuries.

As a result, the ex-Bayern Munich loanee was restricted to just 26 appearances in his maiden campaign with the Toffees.

Rodriguez has now seen Ancelotti, who was a key reason for him agreeing to the move, depart Goodison Park in favour of a return to Real Madrid following Zinedine Zidane’s resignation.

Rafa Benitez has been appointed as the Italian’s successor despite his Liverpool links and ex-Toffees striker Bent feels it makes sense to allow Rodriguez to move on after a frustrating campaign in the Premier League.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Bent said: “He wasn’t consistent enough because of the injuries last season, but there’s going to be a price on his head now.

“Obviously, if they cash in you know they are going to make some money back on him.”
