Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa set to sign new contract

Leeds United could be set for a huge boost as some major news emerges from Thorp Arch about Marcelo Bielsa’s future at the club.

What’s the story?

The Argentine has been an inspirational figure at Elland Road, guiding the Whites out of the Championship and steering them to an impressive first season back in the Premier League.

Now, Football Insider claim that the club “will start work this week on finalising new contracts for Marcelo Bielsa and his coaching assistants”, and that “United chiefs have held preliminary talks with Bielsa’s representatives over a new one-year agreement that will see him extend his spell to a fourth season”.

The report adds that a Leeds source has revealed the club are “confident” Bielsa will put pen to paper on a new deal now that the season is over.

Fans will be buzzing

When reports emerged back in April that Bielsa was close to signing a new deal, Leeds fans took to Twitter to voice their delight at seeing the Argentine commit his future to the club.

And while it seems to have taken a while, the fresh news that Bielsa is close to finalising that new contract will undoubtedly have fans of the Yorkshire club absolutely buzzing, especially given the incredible moments that he has given them as manager.

And, speaking exclusively to FFC, Lawrie Sanchez insisted he could always see Bielsa staying, saying: “Where does he go? He isn’t going to another Premier League club. I think he’s a bit like Roy Hodgson. He wants to work, doesn’t he?  He’s working now in the biggest league in his life, and as much as he comes across as not that interested in it, when people tap you on the shoulder back home and say, ‘I saw you on the TV the other week, your team did brilliant,’ it’s a massive boost to you.

“I think he will stay. They call him a maverick; he dances to his own tune, doesn’t he?  So, if he did leave you would say ‘that’s Bielsa’. But if he were to stay involved in football and having come all the way to Leeds and having seen how well the team has done this year, and obviously they will be backed next year, so I can see him staying.”

News of Bielsa’s impending new contract is a major boost for Leeds just after the Premier League season has finished.

Meanwhile, Marcelo Bielsa is heading for a major early window howler at Leeds…

Ake: Spurs could finally replace Vertonghen

Tottenham Hotspur may be gifted the perfect opportunity to bolster a key area of weakness this summer, according to emerging reports…

What’s the word?

The Daily Star claimed that Manchester City could offer defender Nathan Ake as a makeweight in their attempts to bring Harry Kane to the Etihad Stadium.

Citizens striker Gabriel Jesus is also being considered in this regard but Pep Guardiola may be reluctant to lose the Brazil international, so they may prefer to offer the former Bournemouth defender plus cash for the England talisman.

The 26-year-old Dutchman is currently valued at just €30m (£26m) by CIES Football Observatory, so you would imagine that the Premier League champions would need to offer a substantial wedge of cash to tempt Spurs into a sale, especially as they are looking at around £150m for Kane’s signature, as per The Telegraph.

Vertonghen 2.0

As reported by The Athletic earlier in the season, one of Spurs’ biggest problems has been in defence, where a lack of cohesion and an abundance of individual mistakes have been the worrying and defining themes of their dismal campaign.

Last summer, the club let Jan Vertonghen depart for nothing after seven years in north London, but Daniel Levy and the club’s hierarchy failed to provide Jose Mourinho with a viable successor.

He did manage to sign Joe Rodon before the domestic deadline for £11m, and whilst he has performed decently whenever given a rare opportunity, he is no Vertonghen. The 6 foot 2 Belgian could play in the middle and at left-back, whilst his vast experience and leadership in the Premier League was a valuable asset which has clearly been missed by Spurs this season.

Alasdair Gold at football.london believes that the side have lacked a leader at the back, which is why they are said to be searching for one as a top priority this summer.

Since his £41m move to City, Ake has struggled for minutes on the pitch (993), with John Stones and Ruben Dias the preferred centre-back pairing under Pep Guardiola.

Interestingly, the Dutch centre-back can also play on the left – just like Vertonghen – and that makes him an appealing candidate for Tottenham in the summer, especially as Ben Davies had a spell on the sidelines towards the end of the campaign through injury.

Ake has earned the praise of one of the Premier League’s best, too. Speaking to the Bournemouth Daily Echo in March 2020, Liverpool colossus Virgil van Dijk waxed lyrical about his fellow countryman.

The Netherlands captain gushed: “First of all, he’s a fantastic guy. I speak with him quite a bit at the national team and I think he’s a fantastic player as well,” revealed the Dutch international before adding: “He has the quality but he has to have more than just the quality these days. But he’s still young, he’s improving and you never know what decision might happen.”

This merely echoes the words from his former teammate and Bournemouth captain Steve Cook, who lauded the 5 foot 11 defender as an “amazing player” and an “even better person” following the confirmation of his move to City.

Ake was one of the few bright sparks during the Cherries’ relegation campaign last year, during which Spurs saw first-hand the qualities he possesses.

The 26-year-old captained the side to a clean sheet back in July 2020 despite Jose Mourinho having the services of Harry Kane. That afternoon, Ake silenced the England talisman and even recorded a better rating (7.3) than him (6.6), as per SofaScore. He also put in three blocks to deny Kane, made one interception and registered five clearances.

Levy could do very little wrong in bringing Ake to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer, even if it means sending their star striker in the opposite direction.

At the very least, they’d be getting an immediate fix to the defensive problems, along with a likely abundance of cash to fund a rebuild elsewhere in the squad.

AND in other news, Spurs hiring 45 y/o gem dubbed “the best” by Guardiola would be shades of Mauricio Pochettino…

The test heading for a draw

The citizens of Faisalabad showed much more enthusiasm for the Test between England and Pakistan than the people of other towns where the matches were held earlier

Col (Retd) Rafi Nasim02-Dec-2000The citizens of Faisalabad showed much more enthusiasm for the Test between England and Pakistan than the people of other towns where the matches were held earlier. How encouraging it was to see the stadium almost packed with cricket lovers every day. Their cheers and chanting provided the players lot of impetus to perform. It was the day of safe and steady batting by both the sides. Except for the 3 quick wickets that the Pakistan bowlers grabbed at the closing hours on the 3rd day, the bowlers could not be described as ` having run through the side’ at any other moment. Notwithstanding the manner the pitch was designed to behave, it eventually helped everyone. It supported the spinners and the pace bowlers alike at the same time helping the tail enders like Ian Salisbury, Craig White and others scoring the number of runs even the players may not have expected.England resumed the innings at the overnight total of 282 for 8 but lost the early wicket when Andrew Caddick was out bringing England down to 295 for 9. The last pair of Craig White and Darren Gough , however, played like the recognized batsmen punishing the bowlers at will. They took a steady start but after surpassing the Pakistan’s total of 316, they were almost on the rampage. The rate of scoring speeded up when White lifted Danish Kaneria for a mighty six while Gough wrapped him for a four in one over. They were piling up runs with the object of taking a big lead Saqlain Mushtaq bowled White after he had contributed an invaluable 41 to his team’s total. England was all out for 342 runs, gaining a lead of 26 runs over Pakistan. Saqlain Mushtaq and Abdur Razzaq shared 3 wickets each while the debutante Danish Kaneria claimed 2.The prolific opener Saeed Anwar feeling indisposed, Pakistan opened the innings with Shahid Afridi and Saleem Elahi losing the 1st wicket with only 13 runs on the board. Not being able to control his slogging instinct Afridi played a crazy shot off —— giving a flying catch to —for 10. Promoted in the batting order, Abdur Razzaq joined Saleem Elahi to pursue a slow and steady race. They leveled the England’s lead of 26 runs in the 11th over and continued piling up runs at a steady pace. With a dashing boundary to mid-wicket off Caddick Elahi hoisted his first 50 in test cricket, at the same time raising Pakistan’s score to 78 for 1. Encouraged by his half century, Elahi opened up hitting all over the field. The result was obvious. In an attempt to sweep Giles, he was caught behind the stumps by Alec Stewart after playing a very solid innings of 72. While the 2nd wicket partnership between Elahi and Razzaq yielded 98 runs, Pakistan was now 111 for the loss of 2 wickets.Inzamam ul Haq took the crease and was off the mark with a single, on the very first ball. The score continued mounting at a steady pace with occasional hits to the boundary. The bowlers were apparently not making a significant impact on the batsmen with the result that 150 of the Pakistan’s innings came in 50 overs. It was followed by individual 50 by Abdur Razzaq which he completed in 140 balls. At this stage Inzamam was at 28 with Pakistan’s total at 169.Pakistan was at 177 for 2 when Inzamam trying to hook Giles was dropped by Caddick in the fine-leg region. It was a highly irresponsible shot by a fine batsman, especially at the time when only few overs were left for the close of play and the light was also fading. The play was stopped with Pakistan at 186 for 2. Razzq (60) and Inzamam (30) were at the crease. With a lead of 160 runs and 8 wickets in hand, Pakistan looked pretty safe. In a situation where the batsmen were excelling as against the bowlers who looked helpless, the match seemed to be heading for a draw.

Crystal Palace: Eagles on verge of appointing Nuno Espirito Santo

Crystal Palace are on the verge of appointing former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Nuno Espirito Santo, according to The Telegraph’s John Percy.

The Lowdown: Palace managerial search nears an end

Following the departure of boyhood Eagles fan Roy Hodgson [Independent], the Eagles have been searching for a manager to reshape the squad ahead of 2021/22.

After prominent links to former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, alongside Swansea City head coach Steve Cooper, Palace have turned their attention firmly towards Nuno as the favoured candidate for the role and look set to appoint the Portuguese native [The Telegraph].

The Latest: Deal could be completed this week

Having also been in talks with Everton in recent weeks, the 47-year-old now finally looks set to put pen to paper in South-East London shortly.

Talks are said to be progressing nicely over a deal, with an official announcement being mooted for later this week.

The reliable Percy, backing up his report on Twitter, said: “Nuno Espirito Santo is in advanced talks with CPFC and an appointment is close. Emerging as Palace’s No. 1 target.”

The Verdict: Nuno the correct fit at Selhurst Park

Espirito Santo would be seen as a coup for the Selhurst Park faithful, having achieved an impressive 187 wins within his managerial career [Transfermarkt], boasting 1.68 points-per-match while at Wolves.

He took the Wanderers to a Sky Bet Championship title, consecutive 7th place Premier League finishes and a UEFA Europa League quarter-final during his time at Molineux [Sky Sports], so his arrival would surely be well received by everyone connected with Crystal Palace.

Needing to start a rebuilding process imminently, having someone with experience in the top flight may have been near the top of the Eagles’ agenda.

Should the São Tomé born boss use his links with super agent Jorge Mendes to lead a successful rebuild, the Crystal Palace support will have some exciting times on the horizon.

In other news, Crystal Palace have released a former £9 million striker.

Revelado pelo Figueirense, Lucas volta ao Rio de Janeiro, aonde viveu boa parte de seus melhores momentos dentro de campo. Stand-in skipper Naved Latif, who amassed 394 against Gujranwala barely eight weeks ago, fell to left-arm paceman Imranullah for a first-ball duck. Imranullah bowled a fine opening spell to claim three wickets which left Sargodha taking lunch at 46 for five. When wicket-keeper Shahid Mahmood was bowled by left-arm spinner Salman Fazal for 14, Sargodha slumped to 67 for seven.
