Aston Villa boss Dean Smith appears to have suffered a major blow before the start of the summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

With the Premier League season in its closing stages, all eyes will firmly be squared towards how Villa can take another big step towards breaking into the European places for next year.

But, they will have to do so without the expertise of Rob Mackenzie, who Football Insider report is closing in on a “shock” move to Bristol City.

The report claims that the club’s transfer guru, who joined as head of recruitment to work alongside sporting director Johan Lange, is heading to Bristol to be reunited with Nigel Pearson, who he has previously worked with at Leicester.

Dean Smith may be concerned

Given that the season is now almost over, news that one of the club’s highest-ranking officials involved in the whole transfer process is set to leave just before the window starts is a real body blow for Smith.

The Villa boss will have been to kick-start the summer window with a bang, but Mackenzie’s imminent exit may just set things back for the club, who should have at least had a plan ready beforehand.

The news from Bodymoor Heath about Mackenzie is a real shock, and it’s one Smith will desperately be hoping doesn’t have a major impact on proceedings at Villa Park over the coming weeks and months.

Transfers can often be complex and losing a key figure so close to the window opening is a blow for Smith and both he and the Villa hierarchy will need to get all their ducks in a row ASAP with the end of the season approaching quickly.

وقالت الصحيفة إن إدارة الذئاب طلبت من برشلونة الحصول على 25 مليون جنيه إسترليني إذا كانوا يرغبون في التعاقد مع أداما تراوري نهائيًا من النادي.

وأشارت الصحيفة إلى أن برشلونة ينوي تقديم مبلغ مالي أقل مع عرض أحد لاعبي الفريق على النادي الإنجليزي.

وأوضحت الصحيفة أن برشلونة عرض خدمات لاعبه الدولي الإسباني، ريكي بويج، لاعب وسط الفريق، على مسؤولو ولفرهامبتون خاصًة أن اللاعب الشاب ليس ضمن خطط وحسابات مدرب الفريق تشافي.

Former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell is not convinced that Josh Doig would be a good enough signing for Celtic this summer.

The Lowdown: Doig linked with Celtic move

The Hoops have had a season to forget in the Premiership, losing their league crown to bitter rivals Rangers and under-performing all too often. A big summer is required in the summer transfer window, with Eddie Howe rumoured to be arriving as manager and new signings also required.

Hibernian left-back Josh Doig has been strongly linked with a move to Celtic, with the 18-year-old considered an exciting young talent.

The Latest: Pundit not sure about Doig move

While it’s hard not to feel that Doig would represent a good long-term investment, Campbell told Football Insider that Celtic need to recruit established players in order to hunt down Rangers. He said:

“Doig is a bargain at £1million but you have to ask yourself the question, how much football has he played?

“It is a signing that is all about potential. Celtic would be signing huge bags of potential. While it could be a great long-term investment, they need players who can knock Rangers off their perch next season.

“Doig has obviously done really well but is he going to take Celtic to the next level?”

The Verdict: Proven players needs

There is no issue with Celtic signing Doig, assuming that older, more proven individuals also arrive at Parkhead in the coming months.

As Campbell hinted, the Hoops aren’t going to make giant strides with teenagers coming into the squad, regardless of Doig’s potential, as the Hibs teenager has played only 42 senior matches.

A mix of youth and experience is surely needed in the summer, allowing Celtic to excel in both the present and the future.

A transfer report from German news outlet Bild has claimed that Newcastle United will sign Jetro Willems for free in the summer window.

The Lowdown: Newcastle need a left-back

Jamal Lewis has clearly fallen out of favour with Steve Bruce, having been left on the bench in the St. James’ Park faithful’s last ten games in the Premier League, and only coming on for a mere six minutes in total in that time (Transfermarkt).

It has not quite worked out for the Northern Ireland international in the North East since his £14.85m move from Norwich City in last summer’s window, and so given that Willems is out of contract this summer, he would offer a much lower risk option with no transfer fee to be paid.

The Latest: Newcastle will sign Willems

As per Bild, the Tyneside club will sign Willems once his current contract at Eintracht Frankfurt ends, with the deal said to be close.

It would spark a return to the Magpies for the £2.7m-rated (Transfermarkt) Netherlands international after spending the 2019/20 season on loan there.

The Verdict: Willems transfer makes sense

Given that there is no transfer fee to be paid, the prospect of bringing Willems back to NUFC is a low-risk, high-reward move if he can get over his injury troubles.

The 27-year-old quickly became a fans favourite in his short spell, as several members of the Toon Army practically begged for him to be signed on a permanent deal once his loan expired.

Willems did well during his time in the top flight, winning no fewer than 5.1 of his duels a game, as well as averaging two clearances, 1.9 tackles and 1.1 successful dribbles per match (Sofascore).

Nonetheless, the left-back could certainly be a useful player to have around in the squad.

Rangers have reportedly made an approach for Nimes winger Zinedine Ferhat ahead of the transfer window, which could prove to be a huge boost for Steven Gerrard ahead of next season should the 28-year-old complete a move to Ibrox this summer.

Rangers were initially linked with the Algerian by French news outlet Foot Mercato earlier this month and it has now been claimed that the Ibrox outfit have made an official approach as they look to prise him away from the Ligue 1 side, who recently lost their battle against top-flight relegation.

A source has claimed [via Rangers Vital]: “I was able to approach a source at Nimes. The source at Nimes asked not to be identified (understandably) and confirmed that the report from Foot Mercato was legitimate. Rangers have definitely made an approach for Ferhat.

“However, the midfielder already has other teams in France interested in him, and according to him, Rangers will need to make a substantial offer to get him. The plus side for any team approaching is that the player’s contract will expire next season, and there is a chance Nimes is relegated to Ligue 2.”

The 28-year-old winger has enjoyed a superb campaign in the French top flight but he was unable to save Nimes from relegation, which suggests that he will likely depart Stade des Costières this summer.

In 33 league appearances, Ferhat contributed an impressive six goals and 10 assists, helping him earn an impressive 7.21 average match rating from WhoScored.

This has been his best goalscoring season to date, with just 29 senior goals in his career. However, he has consistently shown that he is capable of getting assists, contributing 20 for Le Havre in the 2017/18 season, so he could definitely be a threat in Gerrard’s side if he moves to Ibrox.

Transfermarkt currently values Ferhat at £7.2m, which suggests that he won’t come cheap, but Gerrard will undoubtedly be looking to add players with Champions League quality to his side ahead of next season. Given that Ferhat is joint-top of the assists chart in Ligue 1 this season, despite playing in a relegated side, it seems that he would be a stellar addition at Ibrox.
