Newcastle must avoid O’Brien transfer

Newcastle United target Lewis O’Brien turned in his worst performance in almost a year as the Huddersfield Town midfielder struggled to inspire a win at Watford on Saturday.

Reports by Football Insider have claimed the Magpies are one of a clutch of Premier League sides eying a January transfer for O’Brien, with the Terriers said to be open to cashing in for the right price.

It is alleged that Sheffield United and Crystal Palace are also interested, while Burnley have been linked after nothing materialised of the Clarets’ interest last summer.

O’Brien is regarded as one of the prize assets at the John Smith’s Stadium and has now started to be shopped around, as Huddersfield strive to secure a buyer after hiring a top agency to headhunt suitors (Print edition of The Sun, 17/1, p. 59).

A move to St. James’ Park could see O’Brien fill a void that Steve Bruce is rumoured to be seeking answers for, with Newcastle thought to be in the market for a new box-to-box midfielder as the Toon chief strives to bring more energy to the Magpies’ core.

O’Brien was far from the star of the show at Watford on Saturday where Huddersfield fell to a 2-0 defeat, with Yorkshire Live claiming that the 22-year-old brought a hard-working presence to Carlos Corberan’s side but noting that his efforts were only acceptable before the Hornets took the lead.

After that, O’Brien’s absence of a forward threat left him and his side wanting and needing more, as the Terriers succumbed to their 11th defeat in 24 Championship fixtures to sit nine points down on the lowest-ranked play-off side.

It was O’Brien’s worst performance in almost a year judging by his SofaScore match ratings, having achieved a lowly 6.3 at Vicarage Road, which only a 6.1 at home to Queens Park Rangers last February sits below. The Rs affair came shortly after two 5.7-worthy performances, too.

O’Brien scored so poorly as the third-worst visiting player at Watford having failed to deliver a single key ball from his 36 accurate passes, while misplacing 11 for a 77% completion rate. The £2.5m-rated midfielder’s efforts were, in fact, below the Huddersfield average of 79% and far below the team average for long balls (50%) having misplaced all three of his efforts.

But his overall passing accuracy was on par for his performances this season, after offering a 78% completion rate over his 20 outings, of which he’s started 17, in the Championship to date, with 28.9 accurate efforts a game.

Defensively, O’Brien was poor, as well, as the £3,000-per-week Terriers product was dribbled past during two of his three attempted tackles and made no clearances, against a side which is striving to secure their return to the Premier League after losing 20 of their top-flight fixtures last term.

He further failed to take a single shot for the sixth-straight second-tier game too, to perhaps prove to Bruce and Newcastle that he is far from the man who the Toon need if they are to sign anyone in the January transfer window to hopefully offer a midfield presence both in attack and defence.

Shots from central midfield is a clear area where United should be looking to improve this month, with Jonjo Shelvey (1.6) the only current Newcastle player to be offering more than a shot a game, and he is also the only Magpie midfielder to offer over one key pass a game (1.4), per WhoScored.

Judging by his shooting stats, added to his poor game against a relegated side, it looks like O’Brien may not be at the standard of player that Newcastle need.

AND in other news, a £2m-rated Newcastle target’s potential has been questioned by his current side.

Rangers can’t afford to lose Morelos

Former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips has recently come out and said clubs will be lining up to sign Glasgow Rangers centre-forward Alfredo Morelos in the summer, but the 54-time Scottish champions simply can’t afford to let their star striker go.

What’s the word?

Morelos’ return to form has been welcomed by Steven Gerrard as the Colombia international has enjoyed a prolific spell since the start of the year, having fired in two goals in just three appearances across all competitions over the past couple of weeks.

The Rangers star was linked with the Ibrox exit last summer, but a move did not materialise, although this has done little to dampen down speculation over his future.

Naturally, other sides have caught wind of his situation, with German publication Sport.de recently claiming Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich have the 24-year-old firmly in their sights.

The report revealed Munich are reportedly eyeing up a move for Morelos as a possible replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

Stand firm

But from Rangers’ point of view, Morelos – who earns around £33,000-per-week at Ibrox, is one of the few players Ross Wilson simply can’t afford to lose. Despite his disciplinary issues, he is far too important for their chances of future domestic and European success.

And yes, the Gers may have scored 11 goals in six Europa League games, but Morelos is still their joint top-scorer in Europe this season with a tally of two goals to his name. Whilst that might not sound like a lot, he recently broke Ally McCoist’s longstanding record, which is certainly saying something.

Apart from Morelos, Gerrard seems to be well-stocked with several options up front, as Kemar Roofe has proven to be a useful versatile asset, having scored 10 goals in 15 top-flight games. However, the 27-year-old has also shown he is rather injury-prone as he has only made one appearance since the start of the year.

Jermain Defoe is always an option, but the former England international is also 38 and has only managed to muster seven appearances in the Scottish Premiership this season as he has entered the twilight of his career.

It’s no wonder players like former Rangers defender Fabio Cardoso have described the Colombian as a “machine” as his phenomenal goal record arguably speaks for itself. 87 goals in 166 games for the Gers is simply astonishing.

Should Morelos depart Ibrox, Gerrard would lose an important piece of his jigsaw puzzle, which is why Ross Wilson shouldn’t even consider sanctioning a sale in the summer, should they receive an official approach.

JEC 2 a 1.

Villa’s Matty Cash was shocking vs Burnley

After getting their first win of 2021 at the weekend, Aston Villa slipped to a hugely disappointing 3-2 defeat to Burnley on Wednesday night.

Dean Smith’s side took the lead on two occasions in the Premier League encounter at Turf Moor, but the Clarets produced a stunning comeback in the final 15 minutes to claim all three points.

It was the first time since November that Villa had conceded three or more goals in a top-flight game, and defensively they were all over the place, with right-back Matty Cash the main culprit.

The summer signing from Nottingham Forest endured a nightmare game coming up against skilful Burnley winger Dwight McNeil, with the Clarets ace terrorising him all night and scoring his side’s second equaliser on the night.

Cash lost possession 24 times over the course of the game, which was the most of any player on the pitch, and far above his season average – as per Sofascore, the full-back concedes the ball 14.2 times per match.

The 23-year-old’s wastefulness with the ball was arguably the least shocking thing about his display, with his defending and positioning sense having gone haywire.

He lost six of his nine total duels as he got physically outmuscled by Burnley’s players, whilst he made no tackles, and just one interception and clearance apiece – in terms of defensive contributions, Cash had the lowest amount among all of Villa’s back-line. The full-back just didn’t get out quick enough to stop the Clarets from crossing the ball, and there was an intensity missing in his game in wanting to put his foot in and stay touch tight.

It was a rare howler from the former Forest ace – his average Whoscored match rating in the Premier League is 7.07 and ranks him fifth among all his teammates – but one that let his manager down in a game that Villa really needed to win as they look to claim a surprise European place this season.

Whoscored gave him a match rating of 6.1 for his performance on Wednesday night, and it’s something a couple of Villa fans spotted.

Dropping points to sides like Burnley, even away from home, just won’t cut it in the race for the top six, and Cash’s performance was a let down.

Meanwhile, Villa could land a Barkley upgrade in this Brazilian…

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Hodgson update

Many Crystal Palace fans are reacting to a tweet from Matt Woosnam after he spoke to manager Roy Hodgson about his future at the South London side.

Hodgson’s contract was due to run out at the end of last season, but the club extended it by a further year. Now, with only a few months left until that deal expires, his future has been getting discussed a lot in the media.

Woosnam, reporting for The Athletic, tweeted: “Roy Hodgson says he has no desire to provoke the conversation over his contract with the club. He says he is happy to wait until the summer and to wait and see what the future brings.”

The 73 year-old has been at the club since September 2017 and has taken charge of 145 matches (Transfermarkt). In these games, he has managed 1.24 points per game and has kept the South London side comfortably in the division. Clearly many have respected his time at the club, with one calling him a ‘class act’.

However, the Eagles’ form recently has been far from impressive. A Hodgson side is typically known for its stern defence, but this campaign they have only managed four clean sheets. They have also only won three games in the last twelve and this emphasises that the manager has struggled this season.

Here is how Palace fans reacted to the news:

“Very short sighted. If we are getting a new manager in, which I believe we should, the work starts now planning for season 21/22 in terms of identifying players available on free transfers. Also, who is making the decisions on what players who are out of contract soon? Bizarre.”

“I think he will go in the summer by mutual consent”

“Roy is a total Gent and a class act. I may not agree with his all of his decisions, tactics and subs etc but his manner is an example to other managers.”

“I think the writing is on the wall, and Parish better be doing his work on a new manager search. Time to be thorough and get the right guy that can bring this club to the next level.”
