Leigh Griffiths is back after a lengthy lay-off, and Neil Lennon’s early-season formation experiment could be the secret to helping him return to his best.

On the chalkboard

Griffiths wasted little time showing Celtic fans what they had been missing upon his return to the starting XI against Nomme Kalju last week, scoring a stunning free-kick in his side’s 5-0 win.

It was the striker’s first goal since November, having taken time away from the game to deal with his mental health. Yet, upon his return, he showed signs, none bigger than the emphatic set-piece strike, that his talents didn’t diminish during his spell out.

It’s a welcome return for not just those of a green and white persuasion but Scotland fans too, who know exactly what he’s capable of for his country.

His return does however provide his manager with something of a problem – how does he get a fit and firing Griffiths into his starting line-up?

A change of shape

Lennon has experimented with a change away from his favoured 4-2-3-1 during the early season, adopting a 3-5-2 at points. This alteration was mainly down to not having a right-back he could totally trust, with Anthony Ralston not risked in the early Champions League qualifiers.

Yet, while it looks a temporary solution as the club brought in Hatem Abd Elhamed to play as a right-back (and continue to chase another, according to The Scottish Daily Mail), it may be the system best suited to Griffiths.

Given Odsonne Edouard’s scoring rate last season and the £9m invested in him, he’s a certainty to be picked, but a fit and happy Griffiths is as prolific a scorer as any, and Lennon’s usual 4-2-3-1 leaves no room for two strikers.

Sticking with the 3-5-2 to fit the 28-year-old Scot and Frenchman in the side would allow the duo to build a partnership, something we’ve not seen yet. If they hit it off, their scoring records suggest they would be a devastating duo up front.

Also, in Scott Sinclair, Vakoun Bayo and Mikey Johnston, they have options to rotate and keep the duo fresh for the important ties.

The temporary fix of three at the back was designed to buff up the defence while Lennon was without a first-choice right-back, but it also happens to be the perfect way to get Griffiths in the team alongside focal point Edouard, which could be just what the popular forward needs to get back in his stride.

وقال يوسف في تصريحات تلفزيونية بفضائية “تن” عبر برنامج “البريمو”: “الظروف لم تكن مواتية لتحقيق نتائج أفضل، بذلنا جهدًا كبيرًا في فترات ضيقة جدًا وضغط مباريات، وأريد أن أؤكد أن الفريق سيستمر في الدوري الممتاز”.

وأضاف: “الدوري هذا الموسم قوي جدًا، خسرنا 5 مباريات وأندية غيرنا خسرت 7 و 8 مواجهات، ترتيبنا في المركز الـ15، حققت نتائج إيجابية مع فرق خارج ملعبي وتعادلت مع الأهلي وبيراميدز، البنك الأهلي كان يحتاج إلى تحقيق فوز واحد لتصحيح المسار”.

وواصل تصريحاته: “الزمالك فاز على الإسماعيلي في آخر دقيقة، هذه هي كرة القدم، نادٍ مثل بيراميدز مؤسسة كبيرة أنفق أموال كثيرة والموضوع يحتاج إلى صبر، المقاولون العرب خسر اليوم والإدارة تمسكت بعماد النحاس، ولكن هذا واقع كرة القدم، ويجب أن أتعامل معه”.

وأتم: “طالبت الإدارة ببعض الأشياء، تم تلبية طلباتي في البعض منها، لكن هناك أمور أخرى لم تنفذ، ولكن عملنا وبذلنا مجهودات كبيرة لم نتعاقد مع كل الاختيارات الأولى في كل المراكز”.

واختتم: “كنا نلجأ لاختيارات ليست الأولى بسبب الميزانية، ولكن في النهاية مجلس إدارة البنك الأهلي بذل مجهود كبير ووفر كل الإمكانيات في حدود المتاح بالنسبة له”.

Some Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to discuss the club’s plans to offer Japhet Tanganga a new contract.

The 20-year-old defender shone for Spurs during pre-season with some very impressive performances, which seem to have sparked the north London-based side into action in regards to tying him down for the future.

Tanganga allegedly signed a new deal back in December 2017, although Spurs have decided to move again to ensure that the impressive central defender isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

The youngster impressed in the friendly games against Juventus, Manchester United and Real Madrid, clearly putting his name into the minds of the right people at Tottenham.

Seeing as he is a young Englishman, his value could well soar if he manages to break into the first-team and deliver some consistent performances under Mauricio Pochettino, a man who has expertly coached the likes of Luke Shaw, Dele Alli and Harry Kane during his managerial career to date – it really would be an exciting prospect if he signed the new deal.

Bernard scored the only goal of the match as Everton recorded a 1-0 win over Watford at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.

It was not the most entertaining of Premier League affairs to be honest – Everton will mind, though, as Bernard’s 10th-minute effort secured all three points.

Somewhat surprisingly, it was just the Brazilian’s second Premier League goal for the club since arriving on a free transfer ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

According to WhoScored, the 26-year-old had two shots, five dribbles and won four tackles during a successful 90 minutes on the field.

Everton are being tipped to potentially challenge for the top six this season.

And it has been a decent start to the 2019-20 campaign with four points from their two games, which sees them occupy eighth spot in the division.

There is no question that Bernard was a key contributor to collecting all three points against Watford.

وأضاف: “سواريز يمكنه التسجيل من أي مكان في الملعب، كل فريق يحتاج مهاجم مثل لويس سواريز، إنه لأمر جيد أن أتدرب مع لاعبين مثله، فهو يريد دائمًا أن يظهر بشكل جيد خلال التدريبات أو المباريات، يرغب في التسجيل بشكل مستمر، يمتلك الدافع لبذل المزيد من المجهود”.

You’d have hedged your bets on Neville winning the race considering he possessed a little more fuel than the canal barge that was centre-back Carragher when they were both in their prime, but you’d have been wrong.

Former Cardiff City striker Michael Chopra believes Leicester City’s Hamza Choudhury can make history by becoming the first-ever British-Asian to play for the England senior side.

What’s he said?

The young midfielder made his Foxes Premier League debut under Claude Puel in November 2017 and has only featured in short spells ever since – not playing more than nine times in any one season.

That looks as if it is changing as Brendan Rodgers clearly sees a spot for him amongst the first-team – the 21-year-old has started all three league matches as well as their Carabao Cup game against Newcastle in midweek, per Transfermarkt.

Choudhury has a mixed background of Bangladeshi and Caribbean heritage but has appeared seven times for England’s Under-21 squad in the past year, including at this summer’s European Under-21 Championships.

Chopra, who was a British-Asian Premier League player himself believes the 5 foot 10 midfielder has every chance of playing for the senior side, he said:

“If you look at the boy at Leicester, Choudhury, I think he is the only one at this moment in time who has got a chance.

“He’s playing in the Premier League as a young boy.

“Whether they are good enough to play for the England national team is another thing because there is so much competition and there are so many good young English players.

“Hopefully an Asian player will come through and play for England at some stage but we still could be talking about it taking some time.”

A realistic possibility

Choudhury has grown into Rodgers’ first-team plans by not only impressing during training and on the pitch for the Foxes, but also when he’s featured for the Young Lions.

It’s his aggression in the tackle that the Northern Irishman loves so much and when you look at who has that in the current national side only Jordan Henderson really comes to mind.

Long-term, he is unlikely to be the answer – the Liverpool midfielder has averaged 1.4 tackles per game in every Premier League season he’s played.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the 21-year-old make the transition into the senior setup at some point in the future.

Not only would it earmark a cultural moment in history but it would be his just deserts for the performances he’s shown in the west Midlands and beyond.

After all, he’s already shown he can perform against the best, earning a match rating of 7.1, per WhoScored, against Chelsea last season.

وتابع: “لهذا السبب نحن هنا، من أجل تباحث سبل تطعيم هذا العمل أكثر، المغرب يزخر ببنيات تحتية مهمة؛ منها مركز محمد السادس لكرة القدم، والتي يمكن أن تستفيد منها إفريقيا والعالم”.

وأتم: “النقاش سيدور بالأساس حول مشاريع وبرامح لتطوير الممارسة لدى الشباب ولدى كرة القدم النسوية، وتطوير اللعبة بشكل عام، هذه فرصة جيدة لمناقشة النقاط المذكورة، والعودة بمجموعة من الأفكار بخصوص برنامج تطوير مستقبل كرة القدم المحلية والإفريقية”.
