What Leeds’ playoff loss means for their pursuit of Daniel James

[ad_pod ]

Leeds’ loss to Derby County was heartbreaking enough for supporters, but now there is salt to rub into the wound as that result has seemingly affected their pursuit of a long term target.

Long term target

The winter transfer window was a frustrating one for the Yorkshire club as they failed to land a number of their targets, meaning that Kiko Casilla was their only addition in January.

Daniel James was very nearly a United player, but the deal fell through at the last minute meaning he stayed at Swansea.

The winger had only played a handful of games for the Welsh club when Leeds attempted to purchase him, but since then his stock has risen substantially meaning a £15 million price tag has been put on his head.

Rumours have been rampant that the Welshman is set for a move to Old Trafford in the summer, and Manchester United may have a much clearer path to signing the youngster now that Leeds’ fate has been sealed.

Not joining the Whites

It seems that the Yorkshire club’s pursuit of the winger will now be over as they can’t offer him Premier League football next year.

Victor Orta showed great ambition by telling James to wait for Leeds’ playoff run conclude before he made up his mind on his future, but now the decision has seemingly been made for him as the Whites can’t compete with the 20-time Champions of England.

The Whites wouldn’t be able to cough up the £15million fee that Swansea are now asking for, and Elland Road is a much less lucrative destination for the 21-year-old now that it has been confirmed that Marcelo Bielsa’s side will be playing Championship football again next season.

Well past it: Everton fans reject potential Arjen Robben swoop

[ad_pod ]

Arjen Robben will be available on a free transfer this summer.

Indeed, the 35-year-old is leaving Bayern Munich following the expiration of his contract at the end of June.

Robben joined Bayern from Real Madrid in 2009 and went on to make 309 appearances for the German giants – scoring 144 times and contributing 101 assists.

The Dutchman has won eight Bundesliga titles, five DFB-Pokal crowns and the Champions League during his time at the Allianz Arena.

Meanwhile, the attacker has also lifted league titles with PSV Eindhoven, Chelsea and Real Madrid during a quite wonderful career.

Injuries have harmed Robben in recent seasons but the winger is not hanging up his boots and there will not be a shortage of interest this summer.

A few Everton fans have been on social media discussing a potential move for the 96-time Netherlands international.

However, it seems that the club’s supporters are not interested in a swoop – a selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

Crucial Alisson save has got Liverpool to the final, but it wasn’t as lucrative as he thinks

[ad_pod ]

“I think I paid half of it back with that save against Napoli.”

This was what Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker said when quizzed on his £66.8m move to Anfield from Roma back in the summer.

The save in question, of course, was a massively vital one.

Jurgen Klopp’s men needed a win over Napoli in order to progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League, and were seconds away from doing just that thanks to Mohamed Salah’s excellent first-half strike.

Has Alisson been Liverpool’s most important signing of the season? Check out the video below to find out why Jurgen Klopp thinks so…

In stoppage time, however, the ball dropped to Arkadiusz Milik inside the box and the Polish international had just Alisson to beat for his side to progress instead of the Reds.

Hearts inside Anfield skipped a beat, and you could’ve heard a pin drop as Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying rested on thin, thin ice.

Thankfully for the Merseysiders, the Brazilian international raced off his line to throw his body in the way of the ball and save his side in their time of need, and Liverpool ultimately progressed.

Alisson reckons he paid half of his transfer fee back with the vital stop, but how much was that save actually worth?

Liverpool earned €9.5m (£8.4m) as a result of qualifying for the last 16, and were rewarded with €2.7m (£2.4m) due to the 1-0 win over the Serie A side – the latter figure is the prize money for each group stage win.

So, the save under the spotlight actually earned the Reds £10.8m, which is roughly around £23m away from what Alisson thinks it was worth.

Of course, the former Roma glovesman has been crucial in getting Liverpool to a second successive Champions League final with his excellent goalkeeping abilities, and has also started every game in the competition this term.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have earned a whopping €85.6m (£75.9m) as a result of their run to the final, and will be due another €4m (£3.5m) if they manage to overcome Tottenham.

Alisson has been crucial in helping the club receive such a large amount of money, but his save in isolation was worth much less than he thinks it was.

Wolves wouldn’t benefit from signing Jorge Mendes client Andre Silva

[ad_pod ]

According to Gazetta dello Sport, Wolves remain in pole position to sign Andre Silva this summer.

What’s the word?

Silva has had a mixed season on loan with Sevilla where he arrived last summer after his parent club AC Milan let him go on a temporary basis.

But the Italian giants now seem keen to offload him permanently after paying €38m (£33.71m) for the forward in 2017.

Wolves are one of the clubs to have been touted as a destination over the last few months.

Calciomercato claimed in March that Nuno Santo’s side were interested whilst his agent Jorge Mendes looked to be helping him move to the Premier League per the same publication in May.

Now, Gazette dello Sport – who also mention Mendes’ role in the potential deal – have suggested that Wolves are still in pole position to sign the 23-year-old. The report claims he could be available for €30m (£26.54m).

Mendes mistake

Super agent Mendes has helped Wolves complete some tremendous deals since establishing a relationship with their owners Fosun. The most prominent one that springs to mind is the transfer for Ruben Neves.

Mendes has got things pretty much spot on since entering a partnership with Nuno’s side but by helping them to sign Silva, he’d be making one of his first major errors.

The fact of the matter is that after spending £30m on Raul Jimenez only a matter of months ago, splashing the cash on another striker simply isn’t needed.

Wolves do need more depth but they’d be making a huge mistake in allowing Mendes to convince them to sign his client, especially given his torrid spell in Spain.

The striker scored nine times for Sevilla in the league last season but has only found the back of the net on two occasions since November. That tells you all you need to know.

Raul Jimenez is turning it on for Wolves and Mexico right now! He definitely deserves the song in the video below…

The striker found the net 20 times for Porto in all competitions during the 2016/17 campaign but he hasn’t come close to replicating that since.

Given the club already have a thriving striker in Jimenez, they should be looking at improving other areas of the squad rather than taking a big-money punt on a player clearly lacking form.

Look at him now: Henri Lansbury and Arsenal

There was once a time when Henri Lansbury was considered one of the brightest sparks at Arsenal, but now he’s struggling to collect minutes in the Championship.

The Enfield-born central midfielder was a key part of the Arsenal youth team that collected the FA Youth Cup back in 2009, alongside Jack Wilshere and Francis Coquelin – both of whom have suffered their own disappointing fates (one more than the other).

We’re going to fire out a few generic buzzwords on this one, but they are all applicable for a reason. Lansbury had immense technical ability and an industrious work rate to boot. His passing ability was what you’d expect from an Arsenal player, and much like ex-Gunner Aaron Ramsey, he knew where to put himself in the box to make himself dangerous. He even bagged himself a goal against Spurs.

Widely considered to be a member of the Gunners’ golden generation, Lansbury was shipped out on a number of loans during the earlier days of his career. The mighty Scunthorpe were the first to benefit in 2009, then Watford the season after, soon followed by periods at Norwich City and West Ham in 2011.

Each period looked like a promising one, and he was even rewarded an extension to his current deal in 2011. Evidently, Wenger saw something in him.

But maybe Wenger’s misplaced faith in the man was a sign of his waning judgement, and just one year after committing himself to the Arsenal cause, he was sold onto Nottingham Forest, the cursed club of England.

In January 2017 the Englishman linked up with promotion-chasing Aston Villa, and despite captaining old club Forest, he slowly but surely fell down the pecking order this season after a string of injuries

With Villa back in the Premier League now and Lansbury’s already doubtful position at the club contested by fans, there’s every chance he could be moved on this season to make way for genuine top-flight quality.

‘Roller coaster’ just about sums his career up.

Arsenal fans, what are your standout memories of Lansbury? Let us know in the comments below…
