Major League Cricket set for July 2023 launch in Dallas

Renovation works ongoing at Grand Prairie Stadium, which could be used for 2024 World Cup

After several years of delays, the first season of Major League Cricket has been announced for July 13-30, 2023 with a newly renovated venue outside of Dallas, Texas serving as the primary location for the 18-day tournament. The announcement coincided with the installation of the turf square at Grand Prairie Stadium, with further renovation work to finish the transformation of the 7200 permanent-seat facility (which can be expanded to 15,000 with temporary seating for larger events) from a minor league baseball ground formerly known as Airhogs Stadium into a full-time cricket venue expected to be completed by the spring of next year.”Next summer, the eyes of world cricket will be on the launch of Major League Cricket, with the stars of the game competing over three weeks of fast-paced T20 action,” Justin Geale, MLC Tournament Director, said. “The launch of MLC will transform American cricket and provide one of the best platforms in the sport for the world’s most elite players to showcase their skills while also fast-tracking the development of domestic talent to feature in the league.”A lease for the Grand Prairie facility was first acquired by MLC in November 2020 with renovation initially anticipated to be completed by early 2022. However, a series of delays pushed back not just the redevelopment of the venue but also the launch of MLC’s first season by more than a year.Demolition and redevelopment at Grand Prairie Stadium finally began in July 2022 and has continued at a brisk pace in order to get it ready by next spring and make it the centerpiece venue of the competition. It means that organisers are now confident that the time is right to kick things off in 2023 and have picked out a window that they believe will avoid any clashes with both the CPL and the Hundred. The opportunity to play at a ground which is in the running to stage matches at the 2024 T20 World Cup, co-hosted by USA and the West Indies, is also expected to lure overseas professionals on the franchise circuit to play in MLC’s first season.Earlier this year, MLC hired Dave Agnew as head curator to oversee the development of the cricket square at Grand Prairie Stadium and also to serve as a consultant on the development of other MLC facilities in the works. The Australian has previously worked as head curator at the CPL and the Global T20 Canada and has also done consultant work at Church Street Park in Morrisville, North Carolina, which has hosted the first two tournament finals of the Minor League Cricket T20 championship that serves as a feeder competition into MLC.”Grand Prairie Stadium will be the best cricket venue in the United States upon its completion,” said Ron Jensen, Mayor of Grand Prairie. “This venue will be a huge asset to the Grand Prairie community, bringing Major League Cricket, international cricket and potentially the 2024 ICC T20 Men’s World Cup to Grand Prairie allowing fans here to experience a world-class sport in action.”Renovation work is being carried out at the former Airhogs Stadium•MLC

The first season of MLC will be staged in a single round-robin format with 15 league matches played among six franchises before a four-match play-off phase. In addition to Dallas, MLC has previously announced that the franchises will be based in Los Angeles, Seattle, Washington DC, San Francisco and New York City. The Knight Riders Group has already come on board to be the owners of the Los Angeles franchise with a proposal in the works for a 10,000 seat venue in Orange County. However, the Orange County venue still has not been finalised, let alone broken ground, and stadium projects in the other cities have also been slow to materialise. It means that MLC organisers may end up using a single site in Grand Prairie for the entirety of the 2023 season. It is an approach that was similarly used to stage the Global T20 Canada in 2018 and 2019 in which all matches were played in suburban Toronto despite franchises being billed as hailing from cities all across Canada.Unlike the Global T20 Canada and many other big-ticket cricket events that have been held in the USA in which start times have been scheduled for late morning in blistering heat to accommodate for the Indian prime time TV audience, sources have said that organisers intend to utilise the floodlights at the facility to stage the majority of matches at night. It will allow for more comfortable playing conditions in the summer Texas heat and encourage more fans to support the event on the ground.Sources have also stated that Church Street Park in North Carolina may potentially be used as a venue for some of MLC’s matches in 2023. Even though no franchise is designated for North Carolina, the venue has demonstrated consistently strong fan support for local cricket since hosting the 2018 ICC Americas Regional T20 World Cup Qualifier and using it for some games would also alleviate wear and tear on the pitches at Grand Prairie.

Crystal Palace loanee is now similar to a £115m talent after leaving

Crystal Palace are sitting 12th in the Premier League after 25 games played, winning seven games, drawing nine, and losing nine. The Eagles are on 30 points, putting them seven points off a top-half spot, and 13 points from the relegation zone.

Oliver Glasner’s side have struggled more on the attacking end this season, scoring just 29 goals in their 25 matches played and averaging 43.8% possession – the fourth lowest in the division – but taking 13.9 shots per match which is the tenth highest in the league.

But, it is the defensive stability that Glasner’s shape gives the Eagles, conceding 13 shots per game, and only shipping 32 goals, that has given them a good base to work from and has allowed them to go on a good run of form.

Crystal Palace's current midfield options

One area the Eagles have struggled for consistency this campaign is in their two central midfield spots.

It’s not as though they lack options, with Cheick Doucoure, Adam Wharton, Jefferson Lerma, Will Hughes, Justin Devenny and Daichi Kamada all playing in the midfield pairing at one point or another this season.

Marc Guehi was even required to play in midfield for one week due to injuries in the squad, which has highlighted the inconsistency in that area due to both fitness concerns and the poor form of certain players.

Due to the all-action role the central midfielders play in Glasner’s system, they have to be able to control the tempo on the ball, go from box to box to provide support in all phases and break up play to protect the defensive line, especially when the wing-backs are flying high.

Crystal Palace manager OliverGlasnerbefore the match

But the Eagles may well have already had the perfect man for that job on loan back in 2023, who only made nine appearances for the club, totalling 536 minutes.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Crystal Palace had a Doucoure upgrade

Albert Sambi Lokonga joined Crystal Palace on loan in January 2023 from Arsenal but only managed nine appearances for the club.

Since then, the midfielder has taken his game up a level, spending 2023/24 on loan with Luton Town, before making the move to Sevilla on an initial loan deal, with an option to buy.

It’s over the last 18 months or so that the Belgian has developed immensely, with his exploits at Kenilworth Road last term even seeing him be compared to Moises Caicedo, as per FBref.

So, how does he compare to the £115m Chelsea player and Doucoure?

When comparing Lokonga’s underlying numbers this season to Doucoure and Caicedo, you can see the Belgian has demonstrated even better progressive numbers than the latter at Chelsea, both with carries and passing.

As mentioned earlier, Glasner’s midfield two are often all-action, having to win their duels to protect the defence, but also help progress play on the ball.

Lokonga, despite having some lower defensive action numbers than the other two midfielders, demonstrates a good level of balance between the two sides of the game.

Whilst it’s easy to say in hindsight, perhaps the midfielder joining on another loan with an option to buy could have been a good move for Palace, in order to add another midfielder of a similar profile to deal with injuries in that area.

0 league goals since leaving: Ipswich hit gold selling “proven goalscorer”

Ipswich Town fans will now be fearing the worst when it comes to their team’s chances at surviving in the Premier League after a demoralising 4-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last time out.

Tomorrow night sees the Tractor Boys travel to Old Trafford desperate to pile on the Manchester United misery, with another loss potentially plunging them further into trouble near the bottom of the division, considering there is already a five-point gap opening up between themselves and Wolverhampton Wanderers occupying 17th spot.

Kieran McKenna will have to remain confident no matter how bleak it currently looks, with the display against Spurs still littered with positives, away from the final score.

Positives from the Spurs loss

Indeed, even though the Tractor Boys would trudge off the pitch at the end in low spirits, it wasn’t as if they didn’t create chances throughout.

Come full-time, the Suffolk hosts would actually accumulate a hefty 17 shots across the course of the full 90 minutes, with Ange Postecoglou’s away side only managing ten in contrast, but did have four goals ultimately hit the back of Alex Palmer’s unlucky net.

Omari Hutchinson would end up scoring Ipswich’s only strike of the day, with the ex-Chelsea man standing out as a lively attacker throughout, even as other faces fluffed their lines.

But, there still is a wastefulness in the Ipswich camp that will slightly irk McKenna, with Delap the only individual in his ranks at the moment who can boast double digits in the Premier League when it comes to strikes.

Even if that is the case, the Northern Irishman still made the right call to ditch this blunt attacker last summer who remains goalless in league action for his new employers, despite once being a reliable head for McKenna to call upon.

Ipswich's "proven goalscorer" is now struggling

Before a ball was kicked to start the new daunting top-flight season, Ipswich did release a few seasoned heads that had become parts of the furniture at Portman Road during the club’s dizzying rise from League One all the way up to the promised land.

One of those faces would end up being experienced EFL goalscorer Freddie Ladapo – who was hailed as a “proven goalscorer” by McKenna after signing way back in 2022 – with the now 32-year-old centre-forward calling Suffolk home for 75 games as 25 goals also came his way.

Ladapo’s main goalscoring heroics for the Tractor Boys would come during the 2022/23 season when the club were still fighting to break out of the third tier, with the clinical 6 foot 1 striker bagging 17 strikes from 46 league games to secure automatic promotion for his team.

He would also chip in with two league strikes last campaign, but it was clear the ageing forward wouldn’t be capable of adjusting to the bright lights of the Premier League, with Ladapo – who departed on a free transfer – now struggling to get going back in League One with promotion-chasing Huddersfield Town.

It’s not as if the EFL veteran has been starting every game for Michael Duff’s Terriers, however, with Ladapo only managing one league start so far this season, yet his many substitute cameos for the West Yorkshire side in the league still haven’t seen a single goal come about.

He does have one strike in the EFL Trophy to slightly shout about, but it’s certainly a sharp decline from the Ladapo that was firing on all cylinders in Suffolk to once steer his team to promotion glory.

All in all, even while Ipswich are over reliant on Delap to get them out of sticky situations, there will be no regrets about letting this loyal servant leave, with Ladapo’s career now in danger of completely fizzling out at Huddersfield.

The first Test between Pakistan and England in Rawalpindi will start as scheduled today after the visitors passed a medical assessment on the morning of the match. However, changes are expected to the playing XI that England had announced 48 hours ahead of the match. The prospect of the Test being delayed arose on the eve of the match after an illness swept through the England camp, casting doubt over whether they would have enough fit players to take the field.Following emergency talks on Wednesday evening between PCB chairman Ramiz Raja and ECB officials Rob Key and Neil Snowball, along with ECB medical director Nick Peirce and team doctor Anita Biswas, a decision was made to wait until 7:30am on Thursday morning before determining whether the Test would go ahead as planned or be delayed by 24 hours. The virus had initially wiped out 14 members of the touring group including half of the 16-man playing squad, with symptoms including diarrhoea and vomiting.Related

Morning decision for Rawalpindi Test as illness hits England camp

Following an assessment by Dr Peirce and Dr Biswas of the touring group, many of whom were confined to their hotel rooms on Wednesday, the results confirmed England would be able to field an XI.A joint statement from the ECB and PCB said: “The ECB has informed the PCB that they are in a position to field an XI, and, as such, the first Test will commence as per schedule today (Thursday, 1 December) at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.”The make-up of the team, however, is subject to change. Captain Ben Stokes, who named his side on Tuesday, James Anderson and Jack Leach were among the worst affected, with others due to play also battling to shake off the bug. Training on Wednesday was optional with only Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Keaton Jennings, Ollie Pope and Joe Root attending the session. All bar Jennings had been named in the initial team, along with a debut for Liam Livingstone, a recall after six years for opener Ben Duckett, Ben Foakes, and Ollie Robinson.England will leave the Serena Hotel at 8am as originally planned and will name their XI at the toss, which is due to take place at 9.30am local time.

BBL switch: overseas departures, Australia Test star arrivals

As a rejuvenated BBL heads towards the pointy end of the season, teams will look markedly different with a number of high-profile players heading to new cashed-up leagues in the UAE and South Africa. But several Australia Test stars will return before heading to India to whip up plenty of interest ahead of the finals.Adelaide StrikersDeparting Chris Lynn, Rashid Khan
Returning Alex Carey, Travis HeadIt’s mixed news for Adelaide Strikers. They lose Chris Lynn, who recently wound back the clock with his big-hitting exploits after a slow start with his new team. Lynn’s last game will be his second against former side Brisbane Heat on January 14 before his contentious move to the ILT20 in the UAE.His exit is softened by the returns of Test players Travis Head and Alex Carey. Head will assume the captaincy and has been in belligerent form as a No. 6 for Australia while wicketkeeper-batter Carey notched his first Test century during the Boxing Day Test.Strikers’ big loss is star spinner Rashid Khan, who played his last game of the season on January 5 against Hobart Hurricanes before heading to South Africa’s T20 league. Strikers’ talisman took six wickets in seven innings at an economy of 6.43 and his match-winning skill along with his passion – which manifested during several feisty confrontations with batters – will be sorely missed.Related

Brisbane HeatDeparting Sam Billings, Colin Munro
Returning Usman Khawaja, Marnus LabuschagneIt is almost a straight swap for struggling Heat, who need a strong backend to reach the finals. Star overseas signings Sam Billings and Colin Munro have been hot and cold but shown occasional brilliance with the bat. They head to the UAE, where Munro will captain Desert Vipers, but are effectively replaced by Test stars Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne. After being a foundation player with Sydney Thunder, where he scored 1818 runs in 59 innings, Queensland captain Khawaja will take the reins as skipper and set to replace Munro at the top of the order alongside explosive Josh Brown.Labuschagne, who only played one BBL game last season, could slot in at No.4 in place of Billings.Hobart HurricanesDeparting Shadab Khan
Allrounder Shadab Khan has returned to international duties with Pakistan although a broken finger saw him miss several games before he left. Shadab took seven wickets in five games at an economy of 7.58, but he was unsuccessfully used at No. 4 before moving down the order.Allrounder Jimmy Neesham left last month and will head to South Africa after an underwhelming stint. He batted mostly at No. 6 or No. 7 but his best effort came with a 19-ball 28 in Hurricanes’ tense win over Renegades. He was also expensive with the ball and claimed just one wicket. They don’t have any incumbent Test players although batter Zak Crawley and allrounder Faheem Ashraf have both recently joined Hurricanes after playing in the England-Pakistan Test series.Trent Boult is one of big-name overseas players leaving•Getty Images

Melbourne RenegadesDeparting Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Akeal Hosein
Returning Marcus HarrisRenegades have lost spin duo Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Akeal Hosein, who both headed to the ILT20 in the UAE. They formed an effective spin duo with 20 wickets between them.Left-armer Hosein was eye-catching in his first BBL season and proved particularly menacing on the slower surface in Geelong. He also unleashed his big-hitting capabilities in the death overs on several occasions. With skipper Nic Maddinson ruled out for the remainder of the season with a long-term knee injury, the return of Marcus Harris from Australia’s Test squad is welcome.Melbourne StarsDeparting Trent BoultWhile his compatriots have been toiling in Pakistan, long-time New Zealand spearhead Trent Boult has had a taste of the BBL. In his first season, it’s been tough going for Boult who had mixed success with the ball for struggling Stars. Although he provided unexpected entertainment with the bat marked by a T20 career best of 23 not out against Scorchers at Optus Stadium.Perth ScorchersDeparting Faf du Plessis, Adam Lyth
Returning Lance Morris, Ashton AgarScorchers have had to remake their top order after the departures of opening pair Faf du Plessis and Adam Lyth.Former Test captain du Plessis returned home to be part of South Africa’s inaugural T20 league. There was much excitement in the west over the late signing of du Plessis, who was embraced by locals after being an antagonist for Australian fans over the years. He smashed a rapid half-century in Perth Scorchers’ record 7 for 229 against Stars but made single digits in three of his last four games. Lyth had a BBL to forget but will hope for better success in UAE with Desert Vipers, where he is set to open alongside compatriot Alex Hales.Scorchers have regained tearaway Lance Morris in a timely addition after Jhye Richardson’s recent hamstring injury. Having moved up the pecking order in Australia’s crowded Test pace stocks, Morris is hoping for a breakout BBL season after modest success previously.Spinning allrounder Ashton Agar returns after playing in the third Test at the SCG but Cameron Green has been ruled out of his stint with a broken finger. They also have Middlesex’s Stephen Eskinazi on their booksSydney SixersDeparted Chris Jordan, James Vince, Naveen-ul-Haq
Returning Steven Smith, Nathan LyonSixers lose veterans Chris Jordan and James Vince, who both head to the UAE. T20 World Cup winner Jordan arrived late to the BBL and only had limited availability although his athletic fielding was a standout.Vince, a star for Sixers over the years, frustratingly couldn’t kick on from several solid platforms until a devastating 91 not out in a successful chase against Stars. He will captain Gulf Giants in the ILT20. Afghanistan quick Naveen-ul-Haq is also UAE bound. But they will be boosted by the inclusion of stars Steven Smith and Nathan Lyon. There will be much anticipation for the return of Smith, who farcically missed last season’s finals series despite being available.Smith famously captained Sixers to the title in the first edition of the BBL in 2012 but his four games in BBL09 were his only appearances in the competition since 2013-14. Smith might replace Vince at No. 3, while Lyon will provide much needed experience for Sixers who have been reliant on young spinners Izharulhaq Naveed and Todd Murphy.Sydney ThunderDeparting Alex Hales, Rilee Rossouw
Returning David WarnerAfter their embarrassing capitulation for 15 against Strikers, Alex Hales helped revive Thunder with three half-centuries in four games before departing to the UAE.They lose more batting firepower with Rilee Rossouw heading home to play in South Africa’s T20 league although he generally struggled to get going. But Warner is set to soften the blow and his return to the BBL is set to be one of the most anticipated moments in the competition’s history. He has only played three BBL matches previously with the last being in December 2013.
