Derbyshire 283 (du Plooy 122, Dal 90, Rushworth 7-44) and 320 for 6 (du Plooy 134, Guest 116, Rushworth 4-44) lead Durham 296 (Mackintosh 51, Pettman 3-40, Thomson 3-48) by 316 runsCenturies from Leus du Plooy and Brooke Guest worked Derbyshire into a match-winning position on day three of their LV= Insurance County Championship Division Two clash against Durham.Du Plooy and Guest combined for a mammoth stand of 248 for the fifth wicket to take the contest away from the home side, recovering from the loss of two early wickets that had put the visitors in trouble at 36 for 4 in the first hour of the day.The two Derbyshire batters were outstanding as Du Plooy scored his second century of the game, while Guest passed three figures for the third time of the campaign to leave their side in command at the close at 329 for 6 with a lead of 316 and the potential of an overnight declaration. After reducing the visitors to 19 for 2 in the evening session on day two, Matt Salisbury ramped up the pressure on Derbyshire by pinning Luis Reece lbw for 12 after the opener opted to leave a straight delivery. Rushworth then claimed his 10th wicket of the game by ousting Wayne Madsen for nine, leaving the visitors in a precarious position with a lead of only 23.The visitors were in dire need of a partnership to calm proceedings, and Guest and Du Plooy rose to the occasion in sublime manner. They ushered Derbyshire into the lunch break to stem the tide and force Durham captain Scott Borthwick to alter his plans. After the break, Guest and Du Plooy reached their half-centuries in the same Liam Trevaskis over and continued to lay the foundations of a match-winning position. Guest had been stymied in the morning session, but moved through the gears against a toiling Durham attack in the afternoon under the baking sun at Chester-le-Street. The bowlers found no life in a flat pitch, and it allowed Guest and Du Plooy to capitalise to great effect, turning the momentum of the game in the favour of Derbyshire.Du Plooy was unfettered and continued his fine form from the first innings, offering nothing to the home side in a controlled knock. For the second time of the partnership, both men reached their milestones in the same over as Du Plooy became the 19th Derbyshire player to score two hundreds in a match. Guest followed his team-mate to three figures from 216 balls, securing his third ton of the campaign along, pushing their partnership past 200, Derbyshire’s highest for the fifth wicket against Durham.Du Plooy’s outstanding innings was finally ended by Rushworth with the new ball finding the outside edge, but only after the left-hander notched his highest score of the campaign. Guest soon followed for 116 lbw to Salisbury, but the visitors were already entrenched in a dominant position before Anuj Dal and Hilton Cartwright worked their lead past the 300-run mark at the close.

Liverpool can forget Zubimendi by signing one of the best DMs on the planet

The January transfer window has been open for business for two weeks, now, and Liverpool are yet to make their first move to bolster their playing squad ahead of the second half of the season.

There is no immediate rush or need for the Reds to dip into the market, however, as they are in a terrific place in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

After their 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Tuesday night, Liverpool are six points clear of the Tricky Trees and seven points clear of Arsenal in the top-flight table.

The Reds are top of the Champions League with six wins from six matches in the league phase, which means that they are on course to bypass the play-off round and go straight into the knockout stages.

This shows that Liverpool are in a good position and do not have to rush into any deals that do not make sense for them in the current transfer window.

It is no secret, however, that Arne Slot would like to add a defensive midfielder to his squad at some point, after failing to land Martin Zubimendi in the summer.

Liverpool set to miss out on Martin Zubimendi

It was well-documented that Liverpool were interested in a deal to sign the Real Sociedad star ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, but they ultimately failed to convince him to make the move to Anfield.

Sky Sports reported in the summer that the Spain international was set to complete a switch to the Premier League side in a £51m deal, the value of his release clause, with the Reds keen to snap him up from the LaLiga outfit.

The outlet added, though, that Zubimendi then turned Liverpool down after Real Sociedad offered him a new contract with bigger wages to keep him at the club.

It will not be second time lucky for the Reds, either, as it has recently been reported that their Premier League rivals Arsenal are on the verge of a £51m deal to sign him at the end of this season.

As you can see in the table above, Zubimendi has played regularly in the Spanish top-flight this season and showcased his defensive quality in the number six position.

The 25-year-old star is a dominant defensive midfielder who does not allow opponents to get the better of him on the floor or in the air very often, which suggests that he provides a strong presence out of possession at the base of the midfield.

Liverpool look set to have to come up against him when they face Arsenal next season, but the Reds could forget all about Zubimendi by landing one of their other reported targets in that position – Aurelien Tchouameni.

Liverpool's interest in Aurelien Tchouameni

Football Insider reported earlier this month that Liverpool are one of the clubs eyeing up a potential swoop to sign the France international from Real Madrid.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The outlet claimed that a move in the January transfer window is currently unlikely, as Carlo Ancelotti does not want to disrupt his squad, but that a move could materialise in the summer.

Football Insider added that Premier League champions Manchester City are also interested in the French titan and that the board have given Pep Guardiola the funds needed to pursue a deal for the defensive midfielder.

Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni

It also revealed that both the Cityzens and Liverpool believe that they could tempt Tchouameni to make the move to England in the summer, ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

This means that the Reds could need to convince the France international to join them ahead of a move to The Etihad to play for Manchester City in order to win the race for his services, whilst it remains to be seen how much Real Madrid would demand for the player they signed from Monaco for £85.3m in the summer of 2022.

Why Liverpool should sign Aurelien Tchouameni

Liverpool should push to secure a deal for the 24-year-old midfield destroyer because it would allow Slot to completely forget about missing out on a move for Zubimendi.

Tchouameni, who was once described as “one of the best defensive midfielders on the planet” by analyst Raj Chohan, has proven himself to be an excellent performer at the base of the midfield for a huge European side in recent seasons.

kalvin-phillips-aurelien-tchouameni-liverpool-opinion

He is a dominant defensive midfielder, who won 71% of his duels in the Champions League last season as Real Madrid won the competition, and the titan is also incredibly reliable in possession.

Over the last 365 days, Tchouameni ranks within the top 2% of midfielders in the Men’s Big 5 Leagues and European competitions for pass completion rate (91.6%), which illustrates how impressive his ball retention is – making him well-suited to a team that wants to dominate games and recycle possession effectively.

His performances in LaLiga this season for Real Madrid, whilst being called upon at centre-back and defensive midfield, also suggest that he could offer more quality than Zubimendi.

As you can see in the table above, Tchouameni is far more reliable with the ball at his feet, with a higher pass accuracy and fewer possession-based errors, whilst being as dominant in physical battles with opposition players.

At the age of 24, he is also a year younger than the Spaniard and still has plenty of time left on his side to develop and improve under Slot’s coaching, which makes him an attractive long-term signing for Liverpool as well as being a player who could make an immediate impact.

Therefore, FSG must ensure that the Dutch boss has the funds available to beat Manchester City to the signing of Tchouameni if he becomes available in the summer.

Bannan’s perfect partner: Sheffield Wednesday make bid for "fantastic" ace

Sheffield Wednesday now have only one win to shout about from their last five Championship games after an action-packed 2-2 draw versus Bristol City.

Danny Rohl’s Owls looked to be heading for all three points but Ross McCrorie ended up breaking Wednesday hearts at Hillsborough with a late equalising strike for the Robins.

Sheffield Wednesday managerDannyRohllooks dejected after the match

The German will hope his team’s season doesn’t unravel from this point onwards, as the South Yorkshire outfit find themselves just four points shy of the playoff picture in spite of their inconsistencies on the pitch.

To help their chances of being dark horses for the top six, the ongoing transfer window will be key in adding in some impactful new additions, with one deal already playing on their minds.

Sheffield Wednesday make bid for £6k p/w star

As per a recent development by journalist Alan Nixon, Wednesday could be set to tie down loan star Shea Charles to a deal that lasts until the end of the campaign.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Charles’ loan stint at the club has come to an end after parent employers Southampton recalled the young midfielder this week, but the Owls could be about to reverse that call having now allegedly upped their offer to keep the Northern Irishman situated in South Yorkshire.

Northern Ireland'sSheaCharlesin action with Belarus' Valeriy Gromyko

Amazingly, the Owls are battling it out with fierce rivals Sheffield United to try and win the £6k-per-week man’s extended signature, with Sheffield Star journalist Joe Crann further adding fuel to the fire by stating a deadline has been above Wednesday’s head to secure a deal.

What Charles could offer Sheffield Wednesday

If Charles was to stay put, this would no doubt help the Owls’ chances of breaking into those coveted playoff positions, with the ex-Manchester City youngster already forming an impressive midfield partnership with Barry Bannan.

There wouldn’t be that awkward acclimatisation period for Charles, therefore, considering he has already starred this season at Hillsborough, hence the frenzy to keep him around.

The Owls number 44 had been a revelation before being recalled, with his grit in the middle of the park coupled with his composure on the ball making him an obvious fan’s favourite alongside familiar faces such as Bannan.

Looking at the table above, it’s clear that the Owls duo complement each other nicely, with Charles more content at doing the dirty work than Bannan away from also being competent in pushing further up the pitch to help out his attacking teammates.

After all, that one strike Charles has managed this season in league action was his first ever professional goal, but his ability to win a high amount of duels per league clash among other battling numbers – as can be seen looking at the table above – has no doubt helped the Scotsman up his levels after a forgettable 2023/24 campaign passed him by.

Bannan would only muster up three goal contributions across 42 league clashes, with his figure for this season already up to six owing to his lively teammate perhaps giving him more freedom to fire home beautiful strikes like this one away at Derby County.

Labelled as “fantastic” player in the past by Pep Guardiola, on top of also being noted as having “undeniable Premier League potential” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Charles staying put at Hillsborough until the end of the season would be a phenomenal move if pulled off.

Nathan Ellis will continue to push his case for a spot in Australia’s T20 World Cup squad in the Hundred after signing a deal with London Spirit.Ellis, 27, was a travelling reserve in the squad that won the title in the UAE last year and starred for Hampshire in their T20 Blast win earlier this month, finishing the tournament with 15 wickets and an economy rate of just 6.87. He has spoken openly about his ambitions to win a spot in the main squad for Australia’s title defence and will now have the opportunity to impress further after signing a deal that will see him replace the injured Riley Meredith for the duration of the Hundred.”That was sort of the catalyst for me playing the Blast and trying to push for the Hundred – just trying to play as much white-ball cricket [as possible] leading into this World Cup and put my name out there,” Ellis told the podcast. “It’s all I want to do: imagine playing a home T20 World Cup in front of your friends and family.”Ellis will play alongside several of his Hampshire team-mates at Spirit. While the two teams are not affiliated, Dimi Mascarenhas – the former Hampshire captain – is one of Spirit’s assistant coaches and their squad now includes five-sixths of the bowling attack that won them the Blast in Mason Crane, Liam Dawson, Brad Wheal, Chris Wood and Ellis, as well as wicketkeeper Ben McDermott. He will also link up with his compatriot Glenn Maxwell at Spirit for the first five games of the season, and Josh Inglis for the final three and the knockout stages. Inglis replaced Maxwell in the squad last year and has signed as a replacement for him again during Australia’s ODI series against Zimbabwe.Related

Three other teams lose players to that series: Southern Brave have lined up Paul Stirling, Player of the Match in the inaugural final last season, as a replacement for Marcus Stoinis in the final stages of the competition while Manchester Originals and Welsh Fire are discussing options to replace Sean Abbott and Adam Zampa respectively.Stirling, Ellis and Inglis’ deals were confirmed on Wednesday morning, shortly after they had been revealed by ESPNcricinfo. The ECB also announced that Tabraiz Shamsi, the South African left-arm wristspinner, will replace Rashid Khan at Trent Rockets when Rashid is on international duty with Afghanistan.Teams are also scrambling to find overseas replacements for the four West Indies players involved, who are expected to miss the end of the tournament to play in the CPL. They are Dwayne Bravo (Northern Superchargers), Sunil Narine (Oval Invincibles), Kieron Pollard (Spirit) and Andre Russell (Originals). Each team can have a maximum of four overseas players in its squad at a given time, but only three in the playing XI.Elsewhere, three English seamers will win late call-ups to the Hundred because Olly Stone (Birmingham Phoenix), Brydon Carse (Northern Superchargers) and Gus Atkinson (Oval Invincibles) are all expected to miss the tournament with injuries. Pat Brown has been confirmed as Atkinson’s replacement while Jordan Clark, Dan Douthwaite and Craig Miles are among the unsigned players whose names have come up in discussions to replace Carse and Stone. In the women’s competition, Sophia Smale, the 17-year-old Western Storm spinner, has replaced the injured Emma Jones at Invincibles, who are the defending champions.

O resultado contra o Coelho fez o clube alvinegro perder a liderança no Brasileirão.

Sky Sports: UCL giants in "serious talks" to sign £17m+ Arsenal player

With the January transfer window creeping closer and closer to the deadline, Arsenal are now reportedly facing the threat of losing one of Mikel Arteta’s most versatile players.

Arsenal transfer news

Still six points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, who have also played a game less, Arsenal have just over a week to turn towards the transfer window in an attempt to bridge that gap.

On that front, several names have been mentioned in recent weeks with Benjamin Sesko once again among those. The RB Leipzig forward is once again enjoying an excellent season in the Bundesliga whilst Arsenal’s attack has looked blunter than ever with Kai Havertz often asked to lead the line. He’s not the only forward target who’s threatened to steal the headlines, however.

The Gunners have also been linked with Newcastle United star Alexander Isak in what would certainly sharpen their frontline. The Swede has been the main man yet again for Eddie Howe – scoring 19 goals in all competitions so far this season.

Before those at The Emirates can even think about splashing the cash though, they may need to clear out any remaining deadwood in Arteta’s side, including one versatile ace.

Arsenal sealed a big win away at Wolves despite going down to ten men.

According to Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg, Atletico Madrid are now in “serious talks” to sign Oleksandr Zinchenko from Arsenal, who value their defender at €20m (£17m) plus add-ons this month.

The La Liga and Champions League giants are reportedly open to a permanent deal or loan move with an obligation to buy whilst Zinchenko, himself, is keen to leave Arsenal.

Alas, with injuries coming thick and fast in North London, it must be said that showing the door to such a versatile player may well be a decision that Arsenal live to regret.

Arsenal should keep "perfectionist" Zinchenko this month

Whilst a summer departure is one that would suit all parties, Arsenal cannot afford to show Zinchenko the door as early as this month as injuries continue to pile up at The Emirates. With Riccardo Calafiori and Takehiro Tomiyasu especially struggling for availability, selling one of the only other left-back options that Arteta has within his squad would not be an intelligent move from the Gunners.

Arteta was previously full of praise for the former Manchester City defender when he arrived at Arsenal in 2022, telling the club website as relayed by Goal: “First of all, his mentality. He’s used to winning – winning is the only thing and winning in the right way.

“He’s a perfectionist and a really demanding boy, I know him so well, and after that he brings qualities that we didn’t have in the squad. He gives us a different option to play within the role in different spaces, and I’m really happy to have him.”

Rizwan sent for scan on injured knee after Pakistan's win over India

Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan underwent an MRI scan on his right knee last night, soon after Pakistan beat India by five wickets in their Asia Cup Super 4 game in Dubai. It is understood that Rizwan felt fine after the game, and the scan is a precautionary measure. The injury occurred in the 15th over of India’s innings, when Mohammad Hasnain bowled a bouncer at Deepak Hooda, who failed to connect with his ramp shot. Rizwan jumped high to collect the ball, failed to get to it, and fell awkwardly on his right leg. He immediately showed signs of pain, and the Pakistan team physio ran out to have a look. A little while later, Rizwan got up, stretched and resumed keeping, but appeared to be limping. He later played a big role in Pakistan’s successful chase of 182, scoring 71 off 51 balls at the top of the order.Meanwhile, Shahnawaz Dahani, who missed the game against India with a “suspected side strain”, has shown significant improvement and the medical team is continually monitoring him, the PCB said in a statement.Pakistan have been set back by a number of injuries at the Asia Cup. Pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi has been out of action with a knee injury since the first Test against Sri Lanka in mid-July. He had travelled with the team to the UAE and was expected to complete his rehab there, but has since been sent to London for treatment.Another quick, Mohammad Wasim, is also out with a side strain. He was ruled out of the Asia Cup a day before Pakistan’s opening game.Pakistan don’t have a specialist wicketkeeper in their Asia Cup squad apart from Rizwan. Khushdil Shah and Fakhar Zaman can do the job but they are not proper wicketkeepers. Mohammad Haris, Pakistan’s second-choice keeper, was with the squad on their recent tour of the Netherlands, but he wasn’t selected for the Asia Cup. In case Rizwan is ruled out, especially with the T20 World Cup around the corner, Haris might have to be flown in. Pakistan’s next Asia Cup game is against Afghanistan on Wednesday in Sharjah.
