Perhaps hoping to make up for a disastrous summer transfer window, Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell has reportedly joined the race the race to sign a former Premier League winner for the Magpies.
Newcastle transfer news
It should come as little surprise that the transfer rumours are coming thick and fast regarding Newcastle after they ended the summer transfer window without several key reinforcements. Paying the price ever since, Eddie Howe’s side are winless in four Premier League games ahead of their trip to face Chelsea and very much look like a side scrambling for options.
Admitting that goals were missing in defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion last time out, Howe could finally receive another reinforcement in 2025, with the likes of Jonathan David linked to St James’ Park when his current contract comes to an end next summer.
Before the forward arrives, however, the Magpies look set to turn towards a Premier League winner. According to reports in Spain, Mitchell is now battling to sign Ferran Torres from Barcelona in a deal that would be worth just €25m (£20m) in the January transfer window.
Finally landing an upgrade on Miguel Almiron, Newcastle could welcome Torres just three years since he scored a hat-trick at St James’ Park in a 4-3 win over Newcastle for Manchester City. Then passing his audition with flying colours, the Spaniard could soon himself celebrating with those on Tyneside rather than acting as the thorn in their side.
Newcastle star Howe thinks is "outstanding" set to miss multiple games
He was initially on his way back to full fitness…
ByTom Cunningham Oct 25, 2024
With competition from Aston Villa and Arsenal, Newcastle will have to act quickly if they want to sign the winger as early as the January window.
"Fantastic" Torres can revive Newcastle attack
Struggling for minutes at Barcelona – starting just five of their 10 La Liga games – Torres could certainly do with a Premier League return and the chance to become the main man at Newcastle. Still just 24 years old and entering what should be his best years, the winger represents a winter bargain at a reported £20m and one that the Magpies simply have to pursue.
Their attack has grown far too blunt in the current campaign, but the injection of a La Liga ace in similar fashion to the impact that Alexander Isak made from Real Sociedad may yet salvage Newcastle’s season.
The former Manchester City man earned the praise of Pep Guardiola when he picked up the match ball at St James’ Park, with the Spaniard telling Sky Sports: “Yeah, he can be [a No 9]. We will use him, we used him and he was brilliant. His rhythm, especially defensively he has improved a lot.
“The game at Palace, he makes a turn [in his season] – so good. The movement he makes as a striker, for the [third] goal, it hits the bar and where it goes, he knew it. The smell, the strikers know, intuitively where it will arrive. He has this talent and the first goal is fantastic. Very pleased.”
Confira:

Cross-party group of MPs calls for new investigation in wake of revelations

Yorkshire’s crisis has deepened following the withdrawal of the club’s title sponsor•Getty Images
A series of sponsors of Yorkshire County Cricket Club – including Emerald Group, the title sponsor at Headingley Stadium, and long-term partners Yorkshire Tea – have cut their ties with the club in protest at their handling of the Azeem Rafiq racism case, while a group of Yorkshire MPs have signed a letter calling on the ECB to launch a new investigation into the club’s handling of the affair. The crisis engulfing the county comes after ESPNcricinfo revealed details of the report into Rafiq’s claims of institutional racism, in particular the conclusion that the use of the word “P**i” could be perceived as “banter”. It is a revelation that led Sajid Javid, the UK health secretary, to call for “heads to roll” in a reply to the story on Twitter. The club’s chairman, Roger Hutton, has since been called to appear before the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) select committee, along with two senior executives, Mark Arthur and Martyn Moxon. Rafiq is also expected to give evidence on November 16, where parliamentary privilege may enable him to divulge further details that have yet to come to light. The damaging revelations have now persuaded one of Yorkshire’s most prominent sponsors, Emerald Group, to end their four-year naming-rights deal at Headingley.”We have today taken the decision to remove our brand association with Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Headingley Stadium,” read a press release.”We do not tolerate any form of racism or discriminatory behaviour and the damaging effects this has. Our intention remains to continue a financial commitment to the stadium itself, which is also the home of Leeds Rhinos rugby, as we believe this supports the aims of diversity and inclusion in sport along with a range of charitable community endeavours.Related

“Emerald will however no longer sponsor Yorkshire County Cricket Club. We hope that YCCC will listen and respond with serious action to eradicate racism from the club and uphold the values we all expect.”In a subsequent press release, Yorkshire Tea announced that it too would be ending its association with the club with immediate effect. Anchor Butter is another brand that has confirmed, via Twitter, that it will have “no further activity” in support of the club.”We were upset to read about the experiences of Azeem Rafiq during his time at Yorkshire County Cricket Club,” read Yorkshire Tea’s statement. “We wholeheartedly believe that cricket should be a sport for everyone, but his experiences and the way the panel report has been handled don’t reflect that.”Our current partnership with YCCC was naturally coming to an end but we have taken the decision to end it with immediate effect.”The political pressure on Yorkshire has also been ramped up in an open letter, signed by a cross-party group of 34 local politicians, including the mayors of South and West Yorkshire, Dan Jarvis and Tracy Brabin.”The disgraceful treatment of Azeem Rafiq has brought Yorkshire County Cricket Club into disrepute,” wrote Jarvis, who is also the MP for Barnsley Central. “It’s appalling that anyone has to suffer racist abuse in the workplace, and then for that abuse to be repeatedly dismissed as ‘banter’ is utterly unacceptable.”The English Cricket Board needs to act urgently to rectify these failures, eradicate the scourge of racism from cricket and restore the reputation of cricket in Yorkshire.”Azeem Rafiq has been courageous in speaking out and has my full support. There is no place for racism anywhere.”Brabin added: “As a county, we often celebrate our strong sporting heritage and love for cricket, however this has shamed Yorkshire Country Cricket Club and I know our communities will stand shoulder to shoulder with Azeem and be utterly embarrassed.”Inquiries by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and the English Cricket Board are welcome, but they should not have been needed.”
Celtic have been the laughing stock of Champions League football for all too long now. Remember that 1-0 defeat to Lincoln Red Imps in the qualification stages? Remember the Hoops not even qualifying for the group stages between 2017 and 2022?
It’s been a sorry state of affairs for the Bhoys and one the great Ange Postecoglou struggled to even juggle.
However, for all of those disappointing nights on Europe’s biggest stage, there have been some memorable ones too. Step forward, Tony Watt. That night against Barcelona was oh so special but yesterday evening’s festivities against RB Leipzig perhaps even trumped that glorious occasion.
When the German side took the lead after just 23 minutes supporters would have been fearing the worst. Here we go again, another nightmare display in the Champions League. Think again.
This time Brendan Rodgers’ Bhoys rallied in spectacular fashion, notably through man of the moment Nicolas Kuhn who scored twice on the night. Reo Hatate also found the net to cap a mesmeric 3-1 win. What a game, what a night.
Nicolas Kuhn's amazing performance against Leipzig
On that remarkable night back in 2012, a 2-1 win over Barca, Watt’s scintillating winner was a moment that has lived long in the memory. Rightfully so, too.
Well, Kuhn’s magic display on Tuesday night trumped that, quite considerably too.
There have been claims that the summer signing is already a potential £40m player in the making and after this display, teams on the continent will likely take notice. You don’t perform like this on the biggest European stage without attracting some degree of attention.
Kuhn deserved the plaudits too for this was one of the best individual performances we have seen by a Celtic player in Europe.
His first goal, in particular, was incredible. Drifting inside from the left-hand side like a prime Arjen Robben, the German – once of Leipzig’s parish – unleashed a devasting effort that found the top corner. Oh how good it was, it really really was a fabulous piece of play.
But the 24-year-old’s outing wasn’t just about his brace. Throughout his Man of the Match performance, he supplied two key passes to demonstrate his creative side, performed four crosses and completed three of his five dribble attempts. Not bad at all.
Chris Sutton summed things up aptly, describing the winger’s performance as “outstanding”. The former Celtic forward also thought defender Auston Trusty was pretty “phenomenal” too.
Auston Trusty's performance in numbers
Signed from Premier League relegated Sheffield United over the summer, Trusty initially didn’t set the world alight during his time in Glasgow but his recent form has been excellent. His crowning moment – certainly so far anyway – came against Leipzig this week.
Prior to Tuesday evening’s win, the American was part of a backline that kept four consecutive clean sheets and despite conceding this time out, he was still fantastic at the back.
Handed an 8/10 rating by the Scotman’s Graham Falk, the journalist outlined how it was ‘another top performance’ having ‘handled a really tricky customer in Benjamin Sesko with little fuss.’

During his time on the field, Trusty was..well..pretty trusty really. It was a near-flawless performance from the centre-back who had a staggering 109 touches, completed 98% of his passes and won an impressive six duels.
For context, only Alistair Johnston had more touches of the ball and won more ground duels. No player at Parkhead had a better pass success rate either.
So, Kuhn may well steal the back pages in Scotland this morning but his fellow summer arrival in Trusy deserves equal praise for a night where he stood up and was very much counted. Sesko, who? The USA star dealt with him with ease.

Contra quem for. Amanhã vão ver o time rápido.
The order of the Tests will not change after a late bid by the WA government for a swap
ESPNcricinfo and AAP06-Dec-2021
Ashes gone: the series won’t be heading to Perth•Cricket Australia/Getty Images
The fifth Ashes Test will be relocated away from Perth after Cricket Australia confirmed it could not be held in Western Australia due to border restrictions in place. There will also be no change in order of the Test matches – on Sunday the WA sports minister Tony Buti made a last-ditch bid for Perth to switch with Adelaide for the second Test – with the replacement venue to be confirmed in the coming days. Hobart is the narrow favourite behind having a second match at the MCG.It could be that there will now be two day-night matches in the series given that broadcasters will have lost the primetime-friendly west coast slot which allows Test cricket to broadcast in the evening in other major cities.A few weeks ago WA Cricket had been bullish about its chances of staging the Test with chief executive Christina Matthews putting it as a “97%” chance, but that receded quickly in recent days with the WA government insisting on 14 days quarantine for anyone associated with putting on the Test from outside the state including key broadcast personnel along with players’ families.”We acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of the WA Government, relevant agencies and Perth Stadium over recent months,” Nick Hockley, the Cricket Australia chief executive, said.”We are very disappointed that we are unable to stage the fifth men’s Ashes Test at Perth Stadium. We did everything we could in partnership with the WA Government and WA Cricket to make it work under the current border and health arrangements, but unfortunately this was not possible.”We are particularly disappointed for Western Australian cricket fans who were so looking forward to seeing the first ever Ashes Test at the new stadium.”Matthews put a figure of between three and five million dollars on the cost of losing the Test of which WA would hope to recover half through CA. She added the the difficulties of all the broadcast and production crew needed had only become apparent in the last two weeks but denied that had been an oversight.”And not just the broadcasters in Fox and Seven – there’s also Hawkeye, there’s Spidercam and there’s DRS that only have a certain specialist group of people who follow it all around the country,” Matthews said. “They can’t get here any earlier than the players. When they come to do their job, they’ve got to go in and out of the public areas.”So there’s things that can’t be kept away from the public and that wasn’t fully known until about 10 days ago. I don’t think we dropped the ball, but maybe we needed to dig a bit deeper into things Cricket Australia need to tell the government.”I’m really cranky about the fact it’s the second year in a row we’re missing a Test, but there’s really no one to blame which makes it really hard. It’s just circumstances.”There was never any chance of the late suggestion of a Test swap being possible and it was quickly shut down by the South Australian Cricket Association on Monday shortly before the CA announcement.Hobart remains a slight favourite to be the replacement venue ahead of Melbourne, with Cricket Tasmania chief executive Dominic Baker adamant the Tim Paine saga shouldn’t have an impact on any decision.Tasmania, which has not staged a Test since 2016, had been due to host the one-off Test between Australia and Afghanistan last monthBoth the NSW government and Cricket ACT have also stated their desire to host the match, at the SCG and Manuka Oval respectively, if requiredQueensland sports minister Stirling Hinchliffe on Monday threw the Gabba forward as an option to hold a second Test this summer.”We’d love to be able to see more content here at the Gabba,” Hinchcliffe said. “We’d obviously want to continue talking to Cricket Australia about making sure that we provide the best facilities for the great content.”Nick Hockley and I speak regularly and it’d be wonderful to play a part in making sure that the Ashes is the best series possible. We’ve got to see what the terms and what the arrangements will be and the circumstances. [We’re] happy to have that conversation.”WA is slated to host one other international this summer, with an ODI involving New Zealand on January 30. That series-opener would also likely be subject to biosecurity arrangements. It comes after the WACA was due to host the women’s Test between India and Australia in October before it was moved to Queensland. A one-off Test between Afghanistan and Australia was postponed last year due to Covid-19.
