Goleiros: Alan Gobetti, Bruno, Felipe Longo e Kauê

Defensores: Daniel Marcos, Leo Maná, Reginaldo, Alemão, João Pedro, Lucas Belezi, Murillo e Robert Renan

Meio-campistas: Biro, Cauan, Keven Vinicius, Luis Mandaca, Matheus Araújo, Pedrinho, Riquelme, Ryan, Thomas e Vitor

Atacantes: Arthur Sousa, Cauê, Emerson Urso, Felipe Augusto, Giovane, Pedro, Richard e Rodrigo Varanda.

Newcastle ready to go again in battle to sign "outstanding" Serie A star

After failing to reinforce their backline in the summer, Newcastle United are now reportedly ready to go again in pursuit of a Serie A defender who’s attracting plenty of interest.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies certainly seem prepared to make up for what was an incredibly quiet summer on the transfer front. Sporting director Paul Mitchell will be well aware of just how much he and the rest of his team behind the scenes failed on the recruitment front, especially regarding their very public chase to sign Marc Guehi.

In the end, the England international stayed put at Crystal Palace as Eddie Howe was forced to settle for makeshift internal solutions amid existing injury concerns within their backline.

Newcastle now plotting move to sign "great" £34m star ahead of Arsenal

He could replace Callum Wilson…

1 ByTom Cunningham Oct 12, 2024

With plenty of making up to do, the transfer rumours have already come thick and fast, including those regarding potential moves for Jonathan David and Antoine Semenyo. The former would particularly steal the headlines given the lethal partnership that he could form with Alexander Isak at St James’ Park.

Meanwhile, Semenyo would arguably be the answer to Newcastle’s right-wing dilemma before they turn their attention towards finally adding a defensive reinforcement.

According to Milan Live, Newcastle are now ready to go again in pursuit of Fikayo Tomori in 2025, competing against the likes of Aston Villa and West Ham United for the the centre-back’s signature.

Beginning to struggle in Serie A after becoming one of the best defenders in Italy, the door could now be opened for Tomori to complete a move back to the Premier League. Leaving Chelsea in 2021, the Englishman has unfinished business in the top flight that he could complete courtesy of Newcastle in the new year.

Just 26 years old, if Tomori wasn’t ready for England’s top flight before, then he would surely be now after what has been a successful spell at Milan, all things considered.

"Outstanding" Tomori can solve Newcastle problem

Newcastle were seemingly well aware of their defensive problems during the summer window having chased Guehi for the majority of the window, only to fail in that pursuit. Now, when 2025 arrives, those at St James’ Park look set to go again in an attempt to bolster Howe’s options, this time focusing on a player who has played in the Premier League as well as Europe’s biggest stage.

With a point to prove following his Chelsea exit, Tomori could complete a Premier League return at his peak to hand Newcastle a defensive leader for years to come. It’s a rise that former manager Frank Lampard may have seen coming, even with the Blues eventually showing Tomori the door.

Lampard was full of praise for the Chelsea academy graduate after the Blues defeated Lille 2-1 in the Champions League, saying (via Metro): “Fikayo was outstanding again. He has to keep on with that.”

It wouldn’t be the first time Newcastle have explored bringing Tomori to Tyneside, either. Reports in the summer claimed that despite Milan’s then-reluctance to sell, a bid of at least €40m (£33.5m) could have been enough to initiate negotiations, according to Italian outlet CalcioMercato.

India to host New Zealand, West Indies, Sri Lanka and South Africa in next nine months

Four Tests, three ODIs and 14 T20Is part of a packed home schedule

India are set to host New Zealand, West Indies, Sri Lanka and South Africa over the next nine months as part of the 2021-22 home season, for a total of four Tests, three ODIs and 14 T20Is spread from November 2021 to June 2022.Stretching a jam-packed home season to June is a rare occurrence considering it is month of extreme heat and the onset of monsoon in different parts of India. But it is a direct consequence of the IPL becoming a 10-team tournament from the 2022 edition as two new franchises will be announced in October by the BCCI.The home series announced were all part of the Future Tours Programme (FTP) for the 2018-23 cycle, but the final schedule has come with one change: Sri Lanka will now play two Tests instead of three, as originally planned, and three T20Is in February-March 2022. The Tests will start on February 25 (Bengaluru) and March 5 (Mohali), and the three T20Is on March 13 (Mohali), March 15 (Dharamsala) and March 18 (Lucknow). The tours of New Zealand and West Indies remain as scheduled.Only three days after the T20 World Cup final on November 14 in Dubai, New Zealand will play the first T20I in Jaipur, followed by two more on November 19 (Ranchi) and 21 (Kolkata), and then the two Tests starting November 25 (Kanpur) and December 3 (Mumbai).ESPNcricinfo Ltd

West Indies are slotted to play three ODIs on February 6 (Ahmedabad), February 9 (Jaipur) and February 12 (Kolkata) and as many T20Is, on February 15 (Cuttack), February 18 (Visakhapatnam) and February 20 (Thiruvananthapuram).Only five days after that series ends, Sri Lanka will play the first Test in Bengaluru.South Africa will play five T20Is in June 2022, covering for the ODIs that were abandoned last year because of the Covid-19 pandemic. That three-match series had to be postponed after the first ODI in Dharamsala, which had been abandoned because of rain. The BCCI has now decided to replay that tour as a T20I series on June 9 (Chennai), June 12 (Bengaluru), June 14 (Nagpur), June 17 (Rajkot), and June 19 (Delhi).Between the Sri Lanka and South Africa series, the BCCI will also slot in the IPL, this time with 10 teams, which could further extend the duration of the tournament. Also, soon after New Zealand leave India in December, India are scheduled to tour South Africa for three Tests, three ODIs and four T20Is; that tour will go on from December 17 to January 26, without taking travel and quarantine dates into account. The 14 T20Is and another T20 World Cup in Australia next year mean India’s next T20I captain after Virat Kohli will have his hands full. India will also play another three T20Is, along with as many ODIs, in England next summer.

IPL retention rules: old teams can keep four players ahead of 2022 auction, three early picks for new teams

After the list of retained players is finalised, the two new franchises will get first choice from the rest of the pool ahead of the auction

The eight existing IPL teams will be able to retain a maximum of four players and the two new franchises will be able to acquire three players from the rest of the player pool before the 2022 auction. While there is no confirmed date for the auction, the purse is likely to be Rs 90 crore (US$12 million approx), which is slightly more than the Rs 85 crore that was available in the 2021 auction. These were among the rules discussed informally this week between the IPL and the franchises. There are two different combinations teams can apply while picking their four players to retain: three Indians and one overseas, or two Indians and two overseas. The three Indians retained by franchises can all be capped, all uncapped or a mix of both. Also, unlike the previous big auction ahead of the 2018 season, there will be no right-to-match cards (RTM) at the auction. As for the three players going to the two new franchises – Lucknow and Ahmedabad – the IPL has specified a combination of two Indian players and one overseas. What remains unclear at present is whether these players will need to be picked strictly from the group of players not retained by the existing franchises, or can be from the larger auction pool – which will have new additions – ahead of the 2022 auction. If the two new franchises are allowed to pick only from the group of players not retained by the other eight, then a player-draft system is likely to be put in place. The IPL had held a player draft ahead of the 2016 season after two new teams – Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions – replaced Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals for two seasons while they served suspensions in the aftermath of the 2013 spot-fixing case. Back then, Supergiants got the first pick – which was Super Kings’ captain MS Dhoni – on the basis of the franchise having made the largest bid during the auction for the two new franchises.Related

Lucknow, Ahmedabad home to the two newest IPL franchises

With regards to retentions, the final choice will remain with the player: does he want to be retained or does he want to go back into the auction pool. That choice might be guided by wanting a change of franchise or if he believes he can earn a better paycheck at the auction. While the IPL is yet to announce the details and rules, the deadline for retaining players is likely to be the end of November. Some of the key elements that the IPL is still to firm up include the maximum amount that can be spent on each retained player and the percentage of the auction purse each franchise can spend overall on retaining players. In 2018, when the last big auction took place, teams were given a purse of Rs 80 crore, and could spend a maximum of INR 33 crore on retained players. At the time teams could buy back five players through a combination of retention and two RTM cards at the auction. If a franchise retained the maximum of three players before the auction, the deductions from from the salary cap were: INR 15 crore for the first player, INR 11 crore for the second, and INR 7 crore for the third – unless a player’s exiting salary was already higher than the cap, as was the case with Virat Kohli, who was paid INR 17 crore by RCB.If only two players were retained, then the first was bought back at INR 12.5 crore and the second at INR 8.5 crore. If only one player was retained, then franchise would lose INR 12.5 crore from their purse. Back then, the IPL had also stipulated a salary cap of INR 3 crore for an uncapped player retained.Big names up for grabs?
The significance of player retention is enhanced by the fact that the IPL will soon begin the process to finalise media rights for the next cycle beginning from the 2023 season; put simply, who plays for whom could make or break franchises’ fan bases. And there is the possibility of some big names, such as David Warner and KL Rahul, being up for grabs this time. Dhoni and Kohli, too, don’t have their future clearly laid out. After leading Super Kings to their fourth IPL title, Dhoni, 40, said his future with the franchise was not a given because he believed the franchise needed to retain a group of players who could form their core “for the next ten years”. Days later, though, Super Kings’ owner N Srinivasan said there would be “no CSK without Dhoni and no Dhoni without CSK”, strongly hinting at the franchise retaining him.Kohli ended his tenure as captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the recently concluded season, but said he would play for the team till he retired.Warner, who was replaced as captain at Sunrisers Hyderabad mid-season having had a forgettable time with the bat, might well have played his final season for the team, even being dropped for the final few matches of IPL 2021.As for Rahul, there has been growing speculation about him parting ways with Punjab Kings, who did not make the playoffs this season despite captain Rahul’s top form with the bat.

Slot convinced by powerful £17m right-back as Liverpool eye Trent successor

With Trent Alexander-Arnold still on course to leave as a free agent in the summer, Arne Slot has now been convinced that one La Liga star is good enough to replace the Anfield legend.

Liverpool transfer news

On the pitch, Slot’s start has created history. Liverpool couldn’t have asked for a better start even if the Dutchman himself will be quick to remind everyone about that one defeat against Nottingham Forest. A perfectionist, the new Reds boss would have been satisfied by yet another clean sheet as his side defeated RB Leipzig 1-0 to make it three from three in the Champions League.

Away from the action, however, things aren’t so smooth sailing. As things stand, Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are all set to depart as free agents at the end of the season, with Liverpool desperately looking to negotiate fresh deals for all three. It’s reached a point that those at Anfield simply must have an emergency plan in place though, which has seen them turn their attention towards La Liga.

Liverpool send scouts to Portugal amid big-money move to sign "elite" star

The Reds are set to watch their target in Champions League action…

ByTom Cunningham Oct 23, 2024

According to reports in Spain, Slot has now been convinced by Oscar Mingueza and Liverpool are plotting a move to trigger the right-back’s reported €20m (£17m) release clause in 2025.

Now 25 years old, Mingueza has enjoyed an excellent start to the La Liga campaign at Celta Vigo, scoring twice and assisting a further five times in just nine games. If there are concerns that Liverpool would be unable to replace Alexander-Arnold’s attacking output, then those numbers quickly put those concerns to rest.

"Powerful" Mingueza represents bargain Trent replacement

Replacing Alexander-Arnold is a near-impossible job and one that Liverpool will hope to avoid come the end of the campaign, but Mingueza should be high on the list of candidates to do exactly that should the Reds have no choice. The La Masia graduate found his feet at Celta Vigo and has now put himself back in contention to reach the top in fine fashion.

Oscar Mingueza for Celta Vigo.

Even earning his first call-up to Spain’s national team in recent months, Mingueza was the centre of Neal Gardner’s praise back in August. The Spanish football expert described the right-back as a “powerful carrier and progressive passer”.

Whilst Liverpool could be in a state of panic next summer, it’s Mingueza who may well bring the calm amongst a free agent storm to hand Barcelona plenty of regret and leave Celta Vigo without one of their best players down the right-hand side.

Markram, spinners help SA crush Afghanistan in warm up

South Africa were hamstrung by Afghanistan’s spinners early on, but their bowlers made up for it

ESPNcricinfo staff

Aiden Markram top scored to anchor a stuttering South African innings•AFP/Getty Images

South Africa overcame a slow start to comfortably beat Afghanistan by 41 runs in the sides’ first warm-up game, with spin bowling playing a significant part in the game for the Proteas.Temba Bavuma, who recovered sufficiently from a finger injury to take the field, decided to bat first after winning the toss, but struggled for fluency with bat in hand. He managed just 31 in 39 balls as South Africa fell well below a run a ball, with Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb-ur-Rahman controlling the early passages of play brilliantly. Quinton de Kock was removed early, and it fell to Aiden Markram and the lower middle order to try and picking up a wobbling South African batting line-up.The excellent Mujeeb got rid of Rassie van der Dussen and Heinrich Klaasen before they could really do enough damage, and leaving it to Markram and David Miller to salvage the innings. Markram smashed 48 in 35, while an unbeaten 20 off 10 from Miller dragged South Africa from the mediocrity of 120 to post 145. Gulbadin Naib and Fareed Ahmed were targeted as the weak links of the bowling attack, the ir six overs responsible for 59 of the runs scored.Whereas Afghanistan had begun the first innings promisingly, they completely capitulated with bat in hand. Bjorn Fortuin and Lungi Ngidi removed both openers for ducks, and a steady stream of wickets right through the innings meant only Mohammad Nabi, who managed an unbeaten 34 off 29, managed to cross 20. Tabraiz Shamsi took three wickets for 18, while Fortuin and Keshav Maharaj allowed just 26 in their allotted eight as the asking rate soared well beyond Afghanistan’s reach, and South Africa convincingly finished a job they had begun with something of a stutter.
