West Brom’s "unbelievable" star could soon be sold for more than Berahino

Carlos Corberan should be commended for the stellar job he continues to do at West Bromwich Albion, with the Baggies in a sweet second spot in the early Championship standings so far, despite a summer of upheaval.

A whole host of first-team faces exited the Hawthorns in quick succession during the off-season, which included the likes of Brandon Thomas-Asante, Okay Yokuslu and more all moving on after helping the Baggies achieve a play-off spot last campaign.

This isn't just exclusive to West Brom's predicament in 2024, however, with the West Midlands side having to bounce back from Saido Berahino's high-profile exit in 2017 after he had become a disruptive influence in the dressing room at the Hawthorns.

Berahino's exit from West Brom

Berahino was once a loved figure in the West Midlands, a product of the West Brom academy that was starring for his side in the top league of English football.

The now 31-year-old striker would bag 36 strikes from 121 games playing for the Baggies, with 20 of those coming during the 2014/15 season in all competitions, as Berahino peaked for his boyhood employers.

From then on, however, the fall-out of his Albion career would occur, with only four strikes coming his way the season directly after he registered 20, as he then continually pushed for a move away from the Hawthorns.

He would eventually get his wish when West Brom finally accepted a switch for Berahino to move to Stoke City for a fee in and around the £12m mark in 2017, a switch that saw the then Premier League side very much come out on top.

Struggling to find a fixed home after leaving West Brom, with his goal output also never reaching near the heights he used to be capable of, Berahino is now on the books of Indian side Rajasthan United, seen as a forgotten former member of the West Brom academy now.

In stark contrast, under Corberan, Tom Fellows continues to shine as a homegrown product in the first-team mix, with the bright winger very much starting as he means to go on this new Championship season.

Fellows' rise at West Brom

Fellows is now even capped by England at U21 level, with his debut during the international break seeing him score versus Austria at Kenilworth Road, to maintain his electric early-season form.

Back in the Championship, the 21-year-old attacker – who was described as "unbelievable" when on loan with Crawley Town by then coach Darren Byfield – has already helped himself to three assists from four league contests, with 5.3 duels won on average per clash too showing off his constant energy and vibrancy down the flanks.

There would have been very real concerns towards the back end of the transfer window that Fellows could be tempted by moving on, as Ipswich Town and Southampton were noted as being interested parties in the standout Baggies number 31 from the league above.

With his transfer value – according to Football Transfers – already rising all the way up to £3.5m off the back of his current heroics, having only been worth a mere £422k at the start of the year, those at the Hawthorns will hope if he does move on down the line that he is sold on for more than Berahino's steep £12m.

That looks likely too, considering it was rumoured that both the Tractor Boys and the Saints were willing to cough up around £11m to try and tempt Fellows to their respective clubs, only £1m off Berahino's fee when he moved to Stoke.

West Brom will, for the time being, obviously just want to keep a firm grip on Fellows, as he could be key in their hopes in trying to achieve promotion this time around, after coming undone in the play-offs last season.

West Brom sold a star for just £1.25m, then he became a £25m goal machine

West Bromwich Albion must now regret letting this star go towards the start of his career.

New Mumbai coach Muzumdar's top priority: Getting the team 'back on track in red-ball cricket'

Muzumdar takes over from Powar who is now the head coach of India Women

Getting Mumbai “back on track in the red-ball format” is at the front of Amol Muzumdar’s mind as he takes over as the team’s head coach ahead of the yet-to-be-announced domestic season. Mumbai, the 41-time Ranji Trophy champions, haven’t tasted red-ball success since beating Saurashtra in the 2015-16 final. In fact, they’ve only made the finals once since then.”To get back on track as far as red-ball cricket is immediate priority because we haven’t won since 2015-16,” Muzumdar, a veteran of 171 first-class games, told ESPNcricinfo. “I think we’re in a good space as far as white-ball cricket goes. I’d like to impress upon the need to be multi-dimensional, it’s key for players at a personal level in today’s environment. So, these two areas are important.”Muzumdar’s appointment was made official on Friday after the Mumbai Cricket Association’s Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising former players Jatin Paranjape, Nilesh Kulkarni and Vinod Kambli, conducted a series of interviews over the past week. A new coach had to be named after the position was laying vacant following Ramesh Powar’s appointment as head coach of the India women’s team.Under Powar, Mumbai won India’s most-recent domestic tournament, the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where they beat Uttar Pradesh in a high-scoring final. Powar himself was a late appointment after the MCA decided to not extend Vinayak Samant’s contract.Wasim Jaffer and Sairaj Bahutule, Muzumdar’s former Mumbai team-mates, Sulakshan Kulkarni, Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Pradeep Sunderram, Nandan Phadnis, Umesh Patwal and Vinod Raghvan were among the contenders for the job.”I threw my hat into the ring purely on instincts,” Muzumdar said. “I think this is as good a time as any, when there’s a great blend of highly-skilled youngsters and experienced players there to guide them. We say Mumbai’s talent pool isn’t quite the same as yesteryears, but we’ve still got as many as seven players in the Indian team, which is still phenomenal. So, to work with this bunch is going to be quite exciting.”Muzumdar has spent the last three years as a batting consultant with the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. He’s currently head of their training and development wing at their academy in Nagpur. In 2019, Muzumdar also had a stint with South Africa as their batting coach for the Test series in India. Apart from that, he has been an active commentator in the domestic circuit since his retirement in 2014.Muzumdar says being already familiar with the role of a mentor during the fag end of his playing career helped him tune up. “For about four or five years, towards the end of my career, I played the role of a player-cum-coach both at Andhra and Assam. Even when I went over to the Netherlands, it was a similar role. So, in terms of approach, it’s something I’m tuned to.”The difference, though, is during those stints, you’re still in control of situations as a player-cum-mentor. Whereas as head coach, you don’t have that control of things in the middle, Even if you may have an indirect control, that touch is missing. But it’s the about the experience and the excitement of working with a great bunch of players that I’m most looking forward to.”

England thrash India by eight wickets with all-round display

Beaumont, Sciver unbeaten fifties help England chase down below-par 202; Raj’s 72 not enough for India

A combined eight wickets from Sophie Ecclestone, Anya Shrubsole, Katherine Brunt, and Kate Cross, followed by fifties from Tammy Beaumont and Natalie Sciver helped England hand India an eight-wicket thrashing in Bristol to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.Related

Beaumont continues in 'ruthless and relentless' groove

Chasing 202, and their 100th ODI win at home, England surpassed the opposition’s powerplay score of 27 for 2 in just 5.1 overs, their tally in the first ten overs 61 for the loss of Lauren Winfield-Hill’s wicket. The run rate throughout the innings remained a study in contrast to India’s: 82 for 1 in 15 overs as opposed to India’s 45 for 2 and 100 in the 19th over against India’s in the 32nd. The 150 came inside 29 overs and in another six overs, the hosts overhauled the target, the winning run – tellingly for India’s lacklustre all-round performance – coming off a wide.Leading the charge in England’s pursuit was opener Beaumont, who remained unbeaten on 87. She spearheaded the chase with two fifty-plus partnerships – for the second and third wickets – worth 59 and 119 with Heather Knight and Sciver respectively. Sciver was also unbeaten, on 74.Beaumont blunted India’s three-pronged spin attack with nimble footwork down the track, powerful drives on the off side, and copious use of the sweep shot. She reached her fifty, 13th in the format, brooming an innocuous offspinning delivery from Deepti Sharma past a diving Harmanpreet Kaur at deep square. A glorious inside-out lofted drive for four was the highlight in Beaumont’s gallery of pristine strokes that featured 12 fours and a six. Her six off Kaur to level the scores off the penultimate ball of the match was equally emphatic. After Ekta Bisht provided the second breakthrough, taking the top of the off stump of Knight, who made a 30-ball 18 in what was her 50th ODI appearance as England captain, Sciver joined in the fun. India’s six-bowler attack looked far from threatening, as did their field placements and the fielding itself, and at no point did the visitors force errors off Beaumont or Sciver in a sustained manner.Having begun cautiously, Sciver upped the tempo through a gradual acceleration en route to her 15th fifty in ODIs and the 2000-run milestone in the format. Dropped on 12 by Bisht, who pipped Sneh Rana to the second spin-bowling slot in the Indian line-up, Sciver brought up the century stand with Beaumont with a glorious hit over the bowler’s head, off Kaur.Carting 10 fours and a six in her run-a-ball knock, Sciver took Bisht for the most runs – 22 off 14 – among India’s bowlers. The second free hit she swatted off seamer Shikha Pandey’s back-to-back front-foot no-balls in her fifth over was the pick of Sciver’s boundaries and it helped England near the 150-mark. Her offensive in Beaumont’s company ensured debutant Sophia Dunkley had to wait longer for her maiden ODI innings.Earlier, under overcast, windy conditions, on a fresh pitch with decent carry and movement that changed little as the match progressed, five-over opening spells in the powerplay from Brunt and Shrubsole denied India any room to make an early imprint on the proceedings. In an exemplary display of discipline and reliance on scrambled-seam variations, the fast-bowling tandem parched India of scoring opportunities after England opted to bowl. The short ball was also employed to good effect. Debutant Shafali Verma, who, at 17 years and 150 days old, became the youngest player – male or female – to represent India in all formats of the game, fell to a failed pull while backing away to a Brunt offcutting bouncer. In keeping with the overarching trend of sluggish scoring that underpinned India’s innings, No. 3 Punam Raut, too, failed to inject any urgency to their approach. First-change Sciver, who finished wicketless, conceded two fours in her second over, both to Raut’s front-foot punches. She struck a further two fours in her 61-ball 32 before her 56-run, 96-ball third-wicket stand with Mithali Raj ended with Ecclestone catching Raut off Cross at mid-off.That England didn’t introduce spin, in the form of left-arm spinner Ecclestone, who finished with 3 for 40, or legspinner Sarah Glenn until the 21st over and could hold back the second spells of their premier quicks, Brunt and Shrubsole, until well past the 30th over was a measure of the hosts’ control over the innings.Kaur was the next to depart. Attempting to guide an Ecclestone arm ball towards third man, the India vice-captain’s back-foot stroke ended up offering the slightest of edges to wicketkeeper Amy Jones.India crawled to 100 in 31.5 overs after Deepti Sharma joined Raj in the middle and reinstated the left-right combination. Shrubsole returned for her second spell in the 42nd over. Off the first ball, Raj reached her 56th ODI fifty to a loud cheer from the 1200-strong crowd with a lofted four over mid-on. A ball later, though, Sharma became England’s fifth – and Shrubsole’s second – wicket on the day, after her attempt to nudge one off the pads saw the ball ping her in front of the leg and off. India reviewed but without any success.Pooja Vastrakar’s arrival at the crease marked a shift in gears for India. Raj showed more urgency at upping the run rate thereafter, slicing past point and picking the region behind short fine for back-to-back fours off Shrubsole, who gave away 15, the most in an over up to that point, in the 44th over.An unsure attempt at dabbing the ball past the keeper in Ecclestone’s first over of her second and final spell had Raj lose the top of her off stump. An innings that had everything from her copping a blow on her forearm owing to a seeming reluctance against taking the short ball head-on to dropping anchor to allow for a rebuild, Raj’s 108-ball 72 proved pivotal in India’s pursuit of a respectable score.Had it not been for No. 7 Vastrakar’s 17-ball 15, though, India may not have even got to 200. In the end, 201 proved far from adequate to challenge the defending ODI world champions.

Unlike Nwaneri: Arteta must drop 6/10 Arsenal ace who lost the ball 14x

Arsenal have been getting a lot of stick from fans and pundits alike this season for playing so-called negative football, and while there might be an element of decontextualised truth to that criticism, they certainly didn’t do that last night.

Now, the opposition was League One side Bolton Wanderers, but Mikel Arteta made eight changes to the side that drew away to Manchester City on Sunday and gave a handful of Hale Enders their full debuts, who took their chances with aplomb.

Jack Porter in goal looked reasonably assured, Josh Nichols at right-back didn’t shy away from the ball, Myles Lewis-Skelly on the other side of the back four looked first-team ready, and Ethan Nwaneri was perhaps the most impressive of the bunch and should be in with a shout of starting again on Saturday.

However, while it was a largely positive night for the North Londoners, one starter’s performance was notably underwhelming, and unfortunately for that player, he’s unlikely to start another game anytime soon.

Nwaneri's pitch to start on Saturday

Unlike some of the other youngsters on display last night, Nwaneri was a known quantity to fans thanks to his record-breaking cameo appearance two seasons ago, his 15 minutes against West Ham United last year, and his displays in preseason.

Nevertheless, there was still some uncertainty about how he’d cope with his first competitive start for the club, but once the full-time whistle was blown, all that apprehension disappeared.

In his 94 minutes of action, the Enfield-born dynamo was simply sensational and fully deserving of the 9/10 rating given to him by the Standard’s Simon Collings, and while there is always a danger of going too early when it comes to promising youngsters, this time feels different.

Throughout the game, the Gunners’ 17-year-old prodigy looked a threat and, like his fellow debutants, didn’t look slightly intimidated by the occasion.

Overall, while we might still be a couple of years away from seeing Nwaneri start week in and week out in Arsenal’s midfield, the lack of Martin Odegaard, combined with his performance and brace against Bolton, should see him remain in the team for the game against Leicester City at least.

Gabriel Jesus' disappointing performance

Yes, the player in question is former Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus, who was making just his second start of the season last night.

Now, the first thing to say is that thanks to Arsenal winning the game practically at a canter, there was nothing match-definingly poor about the Brazilian’s display, but that is not the issue. The issue is that there wasn’t very much to his display at all.

In what should have been a game in which the 27-year-old bagged a few goals to get his season up and running while maybe providing the odd assist here and there for the youngsters as well, he just looked uninspiring and ineffective, slicing the few chances he had wide of goal.

There were one or two moments in the second half in which he used some lovely close control to spin the Bolton defenders, but it was too late in the game and only helped highlight how anonymous he had been up until that point.

It might sound harsh, but it’s an opinion shared by Collings, who gave the talented forward a 6/10 on the night, which is probably fair when looking at his statistics.

In his 94 minutes of action, the São Paulo-born “monster”, as dubbed by journalist Mark Douglas, failed to score or assist a goal, failed to register a single shot on target, took two shots that were off target and three that were blocked, maintained a passing accuracy of just 88%, failed to complete his one cross, lost six of 13 duels and lost the ball 14 times, which is really quite poor given the calibre of opposition.

Ultimately, we all know how brilliant Jesus can be when he’s in form and firing, but based on his performances this season and specifically last night, it looks like he’s way off it at the moment and, therefore, should not be starting on the weekend.

Barca want him: Liverpool must axe star who earns more than Gakpo & Diaz

Liverpool sit pretty at the top of the Premier League heading into another international break, after Arne Slot’s men got the better of Crystal Palace 1-0 away from home on Saturday.

It wasn’t the most convincing win in the end, with Diogo Jota’s early strike ending up being the difference maker between the two sides on the day, but the Reds won’t care one bit as they go about continuing their excellent start to the campaign under their new Dutch manager.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

Slot made some big calls in the build-up to this clash with the Eagles, as Luis Diaz dropped down to the bench amongst other notable switches, but Cody Gakpo’s inclusion from the get-go proved to be an inspired alteration by the ex-Feyenoord boss.

Gakpo and Diaz's importance to Liverpool

Gakpo stood out for the Reds in attack on their travels down to South London, with the exciting 25-year-old forward combining well with Jota for the only strike of the contest.

Amassing five key passes on the day as a livewire for Oliver Glasner’s men to keep tabs on, Gakpo also fired two efforts of his own towards the Palace net to try and make his table-topping side’s win more emphatic away from the solitary Jota goal.

That was the Liverpool number 18’s first start in the Premier League this campaign, and certainly won’t be his last based on the numbers he put in, with Slot rubbing his hands with delight at the amount of options he has at his disposal up top.

Diaz will hope he can break back into his manager’s XI regardless of Gakpo’s stellar showing, however, with the Colombian attacker boasting fine numbers himself this campaign, having bagged an impressive five goals from seven Premier League contests.

Luis Diaz celebrates

Whilst Diaz will be confident that he can re-enter the lineup soon, Darwin Nunez won’t feel so optimistic, with the Uruguayan left on the bench even during the latter stages of the win at Selhurst Park.

The latest on Darwin Nunez's future at Liverpool

It has also been reported that there are interested parties looking at the inconsistent striker, with GIVEMESPORT claiming that Barcelona could be preparing a bid for Nunez soon to give him a way out of Anfield this January.

Liverpool would look to recoup some of the whopping £85m they splashed out on Nunez if they were to offload him soon, with a sale also allowing the aspiring top-flight champions to free up some space on the wage bill, as the South American centre-forward is a high earner in the current Reds camp.

Despite only firing home one lacklustre strike so far this season, Nunez rakes in a high £140k-per-week salary, with 34 goals from 103 total games donning Liverpool red so far not exactly blowing away the Anfield masses either.

Both Gakpo and Diaz earn smaller pay packets despite both shining more for Slot’s men this season than Nunez has managed, with the Dutchman earning £120k-per-week and the 27-year-old winger earning £55k-per-week respectively.

Darwin Nunez for Liverpool

Whilst Diaz will be confident that he can force his way back into the main lineup soon, Nunez won’t be so sure, with only one start coming his way in the top-flight this season as Jota makes that spot up top his own.

The Portuguese forward will be even harder to shift after his winning strike against Palace, with his counterpart – who was labelled as “very wasteful” by ex-Reds great Robbie Fowler last campaign – very wary about his future in England and perhaps tempted by a switch to the Camp Nou subsequently.

Darwin Nunez for Liverpool

Of course, the season is still in its infancy, and as Gakpo proved last time out against the Eagles, opportunities are there for the taking when Slot does decide to freshen up his XI.

The 30 players initially gathering in Bengaluru comprise the core of the 21-member squad that toured the UK in June-July as well as the one that was picked for the preceding limited-overs home series against South Africa in March. While the BCCI is yet to make any official announcements regarding the camp, it is learnt that Railways fast bowler Meghna Singh is among those who have been asked to join. Haryana quick Mansi Joshi, who featured in three ODIs against South Africa, couldn’t make the cut. But Chandigarh captain Amanjot Kaur, who formerly represented Punjab and plays as a top-order batter and medium pacer, is among the uncapped probables headed to the camp.Match simulation, skills-based training and fitness would be the focus of the camp with intra-squad pink-ball matches also likely to be held in order to help with preparations for the Australia tour that consists of three ODIs, a day-night Test – India’s first – and three T20Is.The last league-stage match of The Hundred is scheduled for August 18 and will be followed by the eliminator on August 20 and the final on August 21. All five teams represented by the Indians – Southern Brave (Mandhana), Northern Superchargers (Rodrigues), London Spirit (Sharma), Birmingham Phoenix (Verma), and the currently bottom-placed Manchester Originals (Kaur) – remain in contention for a playoffs berth.A Cricket Australia release in May stated that the ODIs would be played starting with one at the North Sydney Oval on September 19, followed by those at the Junction Oval on September 22 and 24, before the caravan moves to Perth for the standalone Test, scheduled from September 30. The tour will conclude with the T20Is at the North Sydney Oval on October 7, 9 and 11, with Australia then set to break for the WBBL, which will also have Indian representation.Australia are the reigning T20I champions, having beaten India in the final of the 2020 edition. Also, they are on a 24-match winning streak in ODIs.India, meanwhile, lost the multi-format points-based series against England 6-10 with a solitary win apiece in the three-match T20I and ODI series. They drew the tour-opening Test, their first appearance in the longest format since 2014. Earlier in the year, in Lucknow, they had lost 1-4 to South Africa in the ODIs and 1-2 in the T20Is that followed.
