The Japan international might well end up shining at Elland Road, but he won't be joined through the door by this expensive new recruit, who Leeds reportedly were chasing before a rejection then firmly stopped them in their tracks.

Leeds had major bid rejected for Zagreb star

According to Croatian outlet Sportske, Leeds were at one point chasing the services of Dinamo Zagreb star Martin Baturina as a last gasp statement purchase, with a bid even being put forward by the West Yorkshire titans.

That bid was in the region of an eye-watering £25m according to the outlet, with Zagreb accepting that bumper offer, before Baturina then rejected the advances of the Whites, owing to the fact he didn't see Leeds as the best place to continue his footballing development.

This could well have been the out-there signing Leeds fans were crying out for, with the potential there for the 21-year-old to have been a bigger talent than Gustavo Hamer if the expensive capture was secured.

It looks unlikely that Leeds will win Hamer's services, with this ambitious deal for Baturina – which would have been a record-breaking buy for the Championship – also unfortunately falling to the wayside.

What Baturina would have offered Leeds

Once labelled as being a "jewel" according to football talent scout Jacek Kulig, it's fair to say there's a lot of hype in the air surrounding Baturina's future in the game.

From 125 senior games in the Zagreb ranks to date, the Croat ace has bagged 16 goals and picked up 31 assists, with five of those assists coming during the infancy of this season alone, as Baturina starred in the Champions League qualifying stages and back in regular league action for his boyhood employers.

As can be seen looking at the table above, Baturina has now arguably outgrown his current location, with a devastating display going forward from the Zagreb youngster helping his side sweep past Istra on the opening day of the new HNL season with ease in a 5-0 demolition job.

Therefore, snapping up the electric attacking midfielder might well have been an excellent purchase to make to fill the void left behind by Rutter going to Brighton and Hove Albion, if a £25m move had indeed got off the ground.

Hamer is, of course, more well-adjusted to the demands of the EFL – when comparing side-by-side with Baturina who has only played in his native nation – but the Zagreb gem arguably has a higher ceiling than the 28-year-old.

The former Coventry City man does have two goals and one assist already next to his name from five clashes this season, adding to his second-tier career total of 44 goal contributions from 125 contests, but splurging out on Baturina would definitely have been seen as a bigger signing of intent from the promotion-chasing Whites.

Daniel Farke and Co will just have to hope one or two more deals can get over the line, away from any other talk, as the clock ticks ever closer to the window shutting.

Former Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp conducted an excellent job in transforming the club after numerous years without a trophy under Brendan Rodgers.

The German worked wonders in the transfer market, making key additions including the forward line, forming a superb trio at the top end of the pitch.

Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané were often Klopp’s go-to attackers, helping the club win the Premier League for the very first time – whilst also ending a long wait for a Champions League triumph.

However, Salah is the only remaining member of the trio, with Firmino and Mane now both plying their trade in Saudi Arabia – allowing for Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota to take their places for the Reds.

New boss Arne Slot already had a talented attacking department but decided to add further quality in a move for one talent over the summer.

Liverpool’s move for Federico Chiesa

After a quiet summer transfer window, Liverpool conducted a flurry of late activity that saw two new additions move to Merseyside.

Slot’s side completed a deal for Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will spend the remainder of the campaign on loan at Valencia, whilst Italian winger Federico Chiesa joined the Reds from Juventus.

The deal for the 26-year-old winger was a bargain, moving to Anfield in a £12.5m deal including add-ons, with the attacker setting Euro 2020 alight a couple of years ago.

However, the former Juve ace has struggled with injury issues in recent times, halting his progress and subsequently leading to his bargain move to the Premier League.

That being said, he still possesses a lot of quality, scoring nine goals in Serie A last season – finishing the campaign as the club’s second-top scorer.

However, he’s been outscored by one player who left the club in a deal just a couple of years ago – with the former Reds ace taking the Premier League by storm.

The former Liverpool talent who's shone since leaving

Striker Taiwo Awoniyi joined Liverpool way back in 2015, featuring for the club’s academy, before being sent on various loan spells all over Europe.

The Nigerian enjoyed temporary stints with the likes of Gent, Mainz 05, and Union Berlin before signing for the latter in a £6.5m deal back in the summer of 2021.

Awoniyi has since found his goalscoring boots, starring for the Bundesliga side, before securing a £17.5m move to current Premier League side Nottingham Forest, continuing to fire in the goals in the East Midlands.

He’s notched 16 league goals for the Reds over the last two seasons, showcasing what the club have missed – even scoring the crucial goal in Forest’s 1-0 win over Klopp’s side back in 2022.

Since his departure from Anfield, the 27-year-old has managed a total of 37 goals in all competitions – outscoring Chiesa by 21, with the Italian registering a tally of 16 goals in the last three full seasons.

Given his excellent goalscoring exploits, Awoniyi certainly could’ve been a key asset for Liverpool today, with his huge frame providing a focal point for Slot’s attack.

Whilst he may not have been a starter, his ability to find the back of the net would certainly have bolstered the Reds’ forward line, potentially allowing the Dutchman to claim a league title during his debut season at the helm.

Qalandars surrendered from advantageous positions in both innings after dominating the first ten overs each time

At first, Islamabad United’s historic decision to bat at the toss – for the first time in PSL history – seemed like a bad idea. Their top five were each out for single-digit scores against the Lahore Qalandars and they were reeling at 20 for 5.However, a 123-run partnership for the sixth wicket changed the game around. Asif Ali counterattacked with six fours and five sixes in his 75 off 43, and Iftikhar Ahmed played Asif’s sidekick with 49. Together they neutralised Rashid Khan and posted a total big enough to give their bowlers something to defend.That was successfully pulled off as Muhammad Musa, Shadab Khan and Fawad Ahmed produced a period of play where the Qalandars lost seven wickets for 14 runs. Musa collected three wickets, and both Shadab and Fawad took two each to seal a win that was eventually very comfortable.The win took United to the top of the PSL points table, tied on points with their opponents of the night, and helped them achieve victory in a manner they had never done previously. And all that without Hasan Ali’s services.Faulkner, pacers breathe fire
It was meant to be a long, hot afternoon for the Qalandars unit after United chose to bat – more so as Colin Munro and Usman Khawaja came in on the back of a ten-over partnership of 137 runs against the Quetta Gladiators. But that wasn’t to be, as Shaheen Afridi had Khawaja caught behind for a duck on the third ball of the match after getting a full ball to move away that made the opener flick down the wrong line. Next ball, Rohail Nazir was pinned lbw with a yorker, only to survive as Afridi had overstepped.However, Nazir could not make the most of his reprieve. He was trapped lbw by a James Faulkner delivery that moved into him in the second over. Two overs later, Faulkner earned another wicket through an lbw, when Munro did not pick a cutter and looked to defend down the wrong line.With Faulkner’s military medium still getting sideways movement, he was given a third over where Hussain Talat’s flick went straight to deep midwicket. Haris Rauf, Afridi’s replacement at first change in the seventh over, then struck first ball when a quick delivery that was angling in had Shadab edging behind. After 6.1 overs, Faulkner had three, Afridi and Rauf had one each, and the Qalandars were 20 for 5. In the last match, the Qalandars had posted their highest ever powerplay score; in this game, they posted their lowest ever.The counterattack
The early blows aside, it remained a batting-friendly track, and that was proved when Ifthikar and Asif had their backs against the wall after Shadab’s wicket, but they clawed their way back with every passing over.Asif struck two fours off Faulkner to bring the Australian’s spell to a close and then used Rauf’s pace to hit back-to-back boundaries. Ahmed Daniyal then bore the brunt of Asif’s onslaught as the batter cleared long-on for six, after which he deposited a flighted Rashid Khan ball for another six on his way to a 28-ball fifty in the 13th over.Iftikhar was scoring at under run a ball until now but he changed gears in the 15th over. After striking Daniyal for a four, he brought up United’s hundred before depositing a full-toss and a slower ball off Rauf for consecutive fours. Together, Rashid and Daniyal conceded 82 runs in eight overs for no wickets, and with two overs to go, United had reached 135 for 5.The 19th over from Afridi began with the bowler being hit for a six by Asif, but a few balls later he was hit-wicket after going too deep in his crease while expecting a yorker, thus ending their 76-ball stand of 123. Qalandars crumble after Akhtar departs
Sohail Akhtar took the early charge in the powerplay during the Qalandars’ chase of 153 as he helped take 11 runs off Mohammad Wasim’s first over. He then walked across his crease multiple times to explore the fine-leg region with boundaries off Ali Khan and Wasim. However, Shadab introduced Fawad for the final over of the powerplay, and he struck off the last ball of the over when Akhtar failed to pick a googly. His 19-ball 34 had helped the Qalandars raze down 55 runs, but his dismissal started a massive collapse that the Qalandars could not arrest.A run-out of No. 3 Zeeshan Ashraf in the seventh over didn’t help them when they just needed to settle into another partnership after Akhtar’s wicket. But a brilliant piece of fielding near cover from Shadab sent Ashraf back.Musa, usually expensive but with the habit of taking crucial wickets, then took two – of Mohammad Hafeez pulling to deep midwicket and Dunk caught behind – to tilt the balance United’s way. Musa then added a third as Fakhar Zaman fell for a laboured 37-ball 44, top-edging one to third man.Then came the spin onslaught. Tim David was out trying to clear long-on off Shadab, while Rashid failed to pick Shadab’s googly. From the other end, Fawad’s quick thinking had Afridi run-out before he bowled Faulkner through his defenses. At 100 for 9, the Qalandars had truly lost the plot, and despite an entertaining tenth-wicket stand, they fell 28 runs short. Apart from the openers and the No. 11 Rauf, no other Qalandars batter reached double digits.

Em outro confronto envolvendo um time da sua base, o Corinthians empatou por 1 a 1 com o São Bernardo, em Itatiba, na última sexta-feira à tarde, pelo confronto de ida das oitavas de final do Campeonato Paulista Sub-20.

O Timão abriu o placar com um gol de Cauê no início do jogo, mas acabou amargando o empate após o rival balançar as redes nos acréscimos do segundo tempo. O confronto de volta deste mata-mata do torneio estadual será na próxima quinta-feira, às 15h, no Parque São Jorge.

وأردف بشأن الإصابات: “مع الأعباء والمباريات الكثيرة، الأمر لا مفر منه، إنه حادث ينتظر أن يحدث، هذا الموسم هو تراكم ذلك، والتوتر، هل هو الحظ؟ بالتأكيد الجدول الزمني صعب، وبالنسبة للاعبين يصبح الأمر مشكلة”.

وسُئل أرتيتا إذا كان يتمنى تعاقد آرسنال مع مهاجم في فترة الانتقالات الشتوية التي انتهت بالفعل، وأجاب: “عندما تحاول بذل قصارى جهدك وتفعل كل ما في وسعك وتقوم بواجبك، يمكنك أن تندم ولكن على الأقل تعلم أنك فعلت ذلك”.

وعن إصابة هافيرتز، أوضح: “كان على وشك إيقاف تسديدة بعد أن أنهيت تمرينًا، ومد ساقه ثم شعر بأوتار الركبة، حدثت الإصابة بطريقة غير متوقعة، إنها ضربة كبيرة بسبب الإصابات التي تعرضنا لها”.

واسترسل: “لحسن الحظ، لقد مررنا بالكثير هذا الموسم، إنه التحدي الذي أواجهه، نحن نحب ذلك، أي فريق في هذا الدوري يخسر أربعة لاعبين في الهجوم مثل هذا وأنا أعلم ما سيكون الجواب”.

وعما إذا كانت الإصابات ستجبره على تغيير نهجه التكتيكي، أفاد: “علينا تغيير نهج اللعب بسبب الإصابات، أن يجلب ذلك فرصًا أخرى، في الهجوم سيكون لدينا لاعبون لا يمكن التنبؤ بهم جيدون في اللعب واحد ضد واحد، مبدعون وحادون، سيسببون صداعًا للخصوم”.

وأكد: “من الواضح أن شدة المباريات قد وصلت إلى مستوى مختلف، والمتطلبات التي نفرضها على اللاعبين أصبحت أعلى وأعلى، وهذا نتيجة لذلك، الإصابات طويلة الأمد، وخاصة تلك المرتبطة بالعضلات والأوتار، تتزايد”.

وعما إذا كان النادي سيفكر في التعاقد مع لاعب حر، علّق: “أدرس كل موقف ممكن، وأتخذ القرار من هناك”.

هل بإمكانكم طلب الإذن من الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز للعب مع ماكس دومان البالغ من العمر 15 عامًا؟: “لدينا ماكس والعديد من الشباب الآخرين هناك، كانت فرصة كبيرة لرؤيته، القواعد واضحة بشأن القيود العمرية”.

وعن إمكانية الاعتماد على إيثان نوانيري كمهاجم، رد: “السؤال هو متى، هل يمتلك الصفات المناسبة للعب على الأطراف أو في الوسط، يجب أن نتكيف مع نقاط القوة لدى لاعبينا”.

وبشأن عودة بوكايو ساكا في وقت أقرب، أشار: “من المبكر جدًا، إنه في مرحلة مبكرة من إعادة التأهيل، عندما يقترب من المشاركة، ويبذل المزيد من الجهد، سنرى كيف سيكون”.

وأشار إلى جاهزية بن وايت: “يتدرب بن وايت بانتظام الآن، علينا إدارة الأمر، لكنه متاح”.

وإذا كان هناك أي شيء يمكنه القيام به في التدريب لمواجهة كثافة المباريات ومخاطر الإصابة، أتم: “لا، نتدرب أقل من أي وقت مضى، لدينا وقت أقل للتدريب، العضلات والأوتار ليست مستعدة لامتصاص الضغط وليس لدينا وقت للتعافي أيضًا”.
