Pakistan eye perfect home season as South Africa search for answers

Pakistan have the chance to defeat a team ranked higher than them and will fancy their chances of doing so

Firdose Moonda03-Feb-2021

Pakistan are on the brink of a third, successive series win at home•PCB

Big pictureAt a time when sport across the world has been disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, Pakistan, a team that has been forced to play at neutral venues for much of the last decade, is on the brink of a third, successive series win at home. After victories over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, they now have the opportunity to defeat a team ranked higher than them and will fancy their chances of doing so after a fairly complete performance in the first Test.South Africa’s errors aside – and there were several – Pakistan did just about everything right in Karachi, from including Nauman Ali, to exploiting reverse swing and most importantly, adding depth to their batting line-up. There’s improvement to be made at the top with the opening pair putting on just 5 and 22 but their lower-order made up for it, with tenacious displays against an increasingly frustrated South African team, whose woes have only grown.Related

Misbah prepared to drop spinners if Rawalpindi pitch unsuitable

Should Pakistan go back to Azhar Ali, the opener?

In the lead up to this match, South Africa were hit with the news that they will not be playing the home Tests against Australia which means that this is the end of their Test season, which only had four matches. The opportunity to rebuild over several fixtures against different opposition in changing conditions is now gone and South Africa have to work with what little they have.A win in Rawalpindi, where conditions are expected to suit them more, would show the resilience the team has so far lacked. Defeat, though, will not be disaster but simply a gauge for where they are as a Test squad. South Africa have already shown signs of addressing team balance, with the inclusion of allrounders, and of finding their best combination. In World Test Championship terms, this is likely to be the last series these two teams play in the current tournament. The result of this Test won’t alter their positions with Pakistan in fifth and South Africa sixth. Mid-table finishes, albeit in a cycle pockmarked with postponements are perhaps not quite where these teams would want to be but both are in stages of transition and the signs are that they will be well worth keeping an eye on when the next round starts.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)
Pakistan WLLDD
South Africa LWWLLIn the spotlight Before Karachi, Babar Azam had only gone one Test in his last eight where he has not scored at least a half-century and, despite the extra responsibility of captaining Pakistan, he would have been disappointed with his returns of 7 and 30, more so because of how he was dismissed. Babar fell to South Africa’s left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj in both innings, first attempting a cut shot to a ball that was too full and then defending down the wrong line to another that turned across him. The good news for Babar is that the series moves to a venue where his fortunes could turn. He has played two Test innings in Rawalpindi and scored hundreds in both of them.Quinton de Kock walks out to bat in the nets•AFP via Getty Images

Though Quinton de Kock has already made plain his longing for the great outdoors he has one more Test to get through this summer before saying goodbye to the long-format captaincy, if that’s what he wants. De Kock will doubtless want to improve his reviewing skills (he asked for DRS incorrectly four times in Karachi) but will be more concerned with bettering his batting. As captain, de Kock has scored 44 runs in four innings and is yet to settle into his new spot at No.5. South Africa still believe that is the best place for him to bat, and he will want to prove them right before the end of the Test summer.Team newsThe only changes Pakistan were mulling over were in the bowling department, where they may have looked to include an extra seamer at the expense of one of their spinners. They have since decided against that and will more than likely be unchanged.Pakistan (probable): 1 Imran Butt, 2 Abid Ali, 3 Azhar Ali,4 Babar Azam (capt), 5 Fawad Alam, 6 Mohammed Rizwan (wk) 7 Faheem Ashraf, 8 Hasan Ali, 9 Nouman Ali, 10 Yasir Shah, 11 Shaheen Shah AfridiInjuries will have the final say in the XI South Africa field. Tabraiz Shamsi has recovered from the back spasm that kept him out of the Karachi Test but concerns over a recurrence could see him miss out, especially as there is also a question mark over Maharaj. South Africa’s leading spinner experienced pain in his side two days before the match and scans showed he has sustained either a small tear or some bruising. He bowled 15 overs on the day before the match but a final call on his availability will only be taken on the morning of the match. If Maharaj is unable to play, George Linde will slot in his place, with Shamsi set to miss out to Lungi Ngidi. South Africa are also seriously considering a seam-bowling allrounder, which they did not have in Karachi, and if Wiaan Mulder plays, it will leave no space for Linde unless Maharaj is injured. The batting line-up should be unchanged with Dean Elgar ready to play after sustaining bruising on his left hand in Karachi.South Africa (possible): 1 Dean Elgar, 2 Aiden Markram, 3 Rassie van der Dussen, 4 Faf du Plessis, 5 Quinton de Kock (capt, wk), 6 Temba Bavuma, 7 Wiaan Mulder, 8 Keshav Maharaj/George Linde, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Tabraiz Shamsi/Lungi Ngidi, 11 Anrich NortjePitch and conditionsRawalpindi has historically been a surface for quicks. With its cooler climate making sure the moisture stays on the surface, fast bowlers have been responsible for 498 first-class wickets, compared to 72 for spinners. However, South Africa’s coach Mark Boucher said it had a distinct lack of grass and described the pitch as “very dry like puzzle pieces,” and expects that spin will play a role. Temperatures will hover in the early 20C and Boucher believes that the moisture and dew will prevent the teams from getting in full days of play.Stats and trivia If Pakistan win, this will be the first time they have beaten South Africa in two successive Test matches; and this will be only their second series win against South Africa out of the 11 series of two or more matches between the teams. South Africa have only played one Test in Rawalpindi, in 2007. It was a high-scoring draw.Quotes”Experience is sometimes physically going out there and experiencing it for yourself. We spoke about patience, the different mental approach, the fact that the run rates won’t be 3,5 like in South Africa and when you defend, you have to defend with a lot of intensity. But watching them play, the guys understood that what we spoke about was happening right in front of us.””The Pindi wicket is of course different to Karachi but this time it isn’t one to play four specialist fast bowlers on.”

CRAQUES PASSARAM NO ESTÁDIO

Celtic chase "brilliant" £5,000-p/w Liverpool duo in double loan move

Celtic are looking to make more additions to their ranks this summer as they work to retain their Scottish Premiership crown in the 2024/25 campaign.

Rodgers wants more signings

With transfer business slow at Parkhead to date, Brendan Rodgers has made no secret of his desire to add new names to his squad before the transfer window slams shut.

So far, his side have signed two goalkeepers to replace the retired Joe Hart and turned Paulo Bernardo's loan move into a permanent one, with the Portuguese youngster penning a five year deal in Glasgow.

But Rodgers wants more, and fired a warning to those above him not to "snooze" in the final weeks of the window.

"We still have work to do. In transfers, there's always moving parts, it's never as easy as just seeing a player and bringing him in. But I would hope by the end of August we would have the team set up how we would've wanted it, because it's so important.

"You cannot snooze in this game of football. You always have to be developing and improving. We want to ensure that we have an improved squad this season in order to take on all the challenges that we have."

That is especially the case should Celtic end up selling midfield talisman Matt O'Riley, who is the subject of interest from European champions Atalanta as well as Premier League duo Southampton and Chelsea.

Celtic'sMattO'Riley

Now, Celtic may have been jolted into action on the incomings front, amid reports that they are targetting an audacious double loan swoop.

Two Liverpool players could join Celtic on loan

That comes as reports claim that Celtic are looking to return to Rodgers' former club to try and complete a double loan deal for young talents Ben Doak and Bobby Clark.

Doak, who left Celtic to join Liverpool in 2022, has struggled to find a place at Anfield and is one of four players that Arne Slot has cut from the first team, opening up a pathway for his exit on loan this summer.

Dream for Kuhn: Celtic set to make new offer for "incredible" £8m star

The Hoops are keen to secure a deal for the impressive centre-forward this summer.

ByDan Emery Aug 8, 2024

It comes just 18 months after he was dubbed "brilliant" by Liverpool and Scotland legend Kenny Dalglish, who predicted him to have a big future.

"He certainly looks the part. He will get there eventually but let's not push him too quickly", Dalglish explained. "The wee man has done brilliant at Liverpool. He's got good vision, he can go past players and he's not selfish. He's always looking for team-mates."

And Liverpool Echo journalist Paul Gorst [Via GiveMeSport] has tipped Celtic to be in the mix to sign him on loan, alongside a move for fellow Liverpool youngster Bobby Clark.

“Leicester and Southampton are two of the clubs interested [in Doak], potentially Celtic as well. As far as I’m aware, the plan was to sit down with his representatives after the tour to discuss what’s next and where would be the best fit for him", he explained.

Ben Doak for Liverpool

“I don’t think Liverpool are actively looking to sell Bobby Clark, but he’s a player with loads of interest. Celtic and Rangers are in the mix, RB Salzburg have had a bid rejected and pretty much half the Championship are interested, including Norwich City and Leeds United.”

Wages would be no problem for the moves, with the pair taking home roughly £5,000 per week combined. And as one of the few sides interested who could offer Champions League football, Celtic could have a massive advantage should they wish to pursue a move for the pair to strengthen their ranks this summer.

Leeds now in permanent talks to sign £25k-p/w "electric" forward for Farke

Leeds United are set to be busy in the final days of the transfer window, and are now in talks over a move for an exciting new winger for Daniel Farke.

Farke wants four more faces

After two games of a Championship season in which Leeds were favourites to secure promotion, they sit in sixteenth place without a win, having followed their 3-3 opening-day draw with Portsmouth up with a 0-0 affair against West Bromwich Albion.

Between those ties, Farke's side were dumped out of the EFL Cup in the first round after being thrashed 3-0 by Middlesbrough at Elland Road as their season threatens to die out before it has even truly started.

To make matters worse, they have sold Georginio Rutter to Brighton in a deal worth £40m, with the Frenchman signing a five-year deal with the Seagulls after his release clause was met.

Though it takes Leeds' sales well over £100m this summer, it leaves them with a much weaker squad than they had last season as departures continue to tot up, with 12 having already said their goodbyes this summer.

Speaking after their most recent game, Farke revealed that he felt he needed at least four new faces in the final 11 days of the transfer window: "We would need cover at full-back, in midfield and two offensive positions. [I] Cannot guarantee we will get all of these, but four is roughly what I would like to see."

Now, they are in talks to sign one of those forwards.

Leeds in permanent talks over "electric" forward

That comes as journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that Farke's side are locked in talks over a permanent move for Burnley winger Manuel Benson.

The 27-year-old is yet to feature for the Clarets this season and managed just eight Premier League appearances last season under Vincent Kompany, starting only one game as his side were relegated.

He impressed in the Championship in 2022/23 though, with one performance against Middlesbrough leading to EFL pundit Sam Parkin to dub him "electric".

“He was electric. Six attempts, Benson was far and away the most by any player,” he told ITV4's highlights show.

Despite still having three years left to run on his £25,000-a-week deal at Turf Moor, the report claims that the forward is "about to leave Burnley" and that "talks on a permanent move are currently taking place" with Leeds named as the prominent club at present.

There is also thought to be interest from Sunderland and Norwich City, while it is added that "personal terms won't be a problem", suggesting that the forward is keen to move on from the Clarets in the final stages of the transfer window.

Having possibly missed out on Jonathan Rowe, could Benson be the man to fire Leeds back to the Premier League?

Gloucestershire have announced the signing of Glenn Phillips, the New Zealand batter, for the duration of their T20 Blast campaign.Phillips, 24, dislodged Ross Taylor to become a member of New Zealand’s first-choice T20I side this season, playing all 14 of their home fixtures and hitting 108 off 51 balls against West Indies. He will provide a wicketkeeping option if James Bracey misses some of the Blast due to England duty, and can also bowl occasional offbreaks.A specialist middle-order batter, Phillips has improved his game against spin markedly during four seasons playing for the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League, and is understood to have been discussed as a possible back-up option by IPL franchises ahead of February’s auction. He will add further firepower to a squad that reached Finals Day last summer for the first time since 2007, joining Ian Cockbain, Jack Taylor, Benny Howell and Ryan Higgins in the middle-order engine room. Phillips spent the 2016 summer in the UK playing for MCC Young Cricketers and for Brondesbury CC in club cricket, and this will be his first stint in county cricket.Related

Phillips will also be available for the County Championship fixtures that take place during the Blast, specifically against Middlesex and Hampshire at Cheltenham, by which point Kraigg Brathwaite’s stint at the club will have ended. He has a solid first-class record, averaging 40.18, and made a half-century in his only Test to date – against Australia in early 2020. Having missed out on New Zealand’s squad for the tour of England, he will be available to play throughout the Blast, and could be an attractive option as a short-term replacement playing during the Hundred.Ian Harvey, Gloucestershire’s interim head coach, said: “Glenn is very exciting to watch and he’s going to add a massive amount to what is already a powerful T20 batting line-up. He can bat at the top of the order, in the middle and also add to our firepower at the end. He’s a bit of an allrounder because he bowls and keeps wicket as well so he will give us plenty of options.”To have someone in your side with the ability to do pretty much everything is a huge bonus and his experience of playing around the world in franchise cricket is going to be a massive benefit for our players. He’s played Test match cricket and can keep wicket so he gives us plenty of options if we want to bring him in for red-ball games.”James Harris has signed for Glamorgan on a two-week loan•Getty Images

Meanwhile, Glamorgan have announced the signing of James Harris, the Middlesex seamer, on loan for their next two Championship fixtures. Harris, who is president of the Professional Cricketers’ Association, came through the club’s academy system before joining Middlesex in 2012, and is returning to Wales on loan for the second time after a similar move in 2014.Harris has fallen down the pecking order at Middlesex and was not named in their squads for the first two Championship games of the season. Glamorgan are experiencing an availability crisis within their seam-bowling department with Ruaidhri Smith and Jamie McIlroy suffering injuries, Timm van der Gugten reporting muscle tightness and Michael Neser yet to arrive as an overseas player, giving Harris an opportunity to play in their matches against Northamptonshire and Kent.
