The England allrounder says the two are “probably really good people” deep down

Moeen Ali has called on fans who will attend the 2019 World Cup to refrain from heckling the duo of Steven Smith and David Warner with personal barbs. Both men will be turning out for Australia for the first time since they were banned for a year each in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal, but Moeen said he didn’t want fans to go after them too much because of that.”I really hope they don’t get too much stick. I want them to enjoy the series,” Moeen told the . “If you have to, keep it funny, not personal. We all make mistakes. We are human beings and we have feelings. I know deep down they are probably really good people. I just hope they get treated decently. I just want the cricket to be spoken about.”Moeen’s comments come two days after Australia coach Justin Langer had said both Smith and Warner would require sensitive monitoring and handling over the coming months.”There’s not too many I’ve met in my life who like being booed or heckled or disliked so… they’re human beings,” Langer had said. “We’re going to have to care for them, we’re going to have to put an arm around them and make sure they’re going okay. But what people say, whether it’s in the crowd or social media or wherever, there’s nothing they can do about that, they can’t control it, but what we can do is keep an eye on them and make sure they’re going okay as people as much as cricketers.”Smith and Warner were part of Australia’s pre-World Cup camp, which included three practice matches against a New Zealand XI. Smith made 22, 89* and 91* in those games, while Warner scored 39, 0 and 2. Both men played key parts in the recently concluded IPL 2019 for their respective franchises, though they had to leave the tournament early to join the Australia camp.Warner was the leading run-scorer in the competition, amassing 692 runs in 12 innings for Sunrisers Hyderabad at an average of 69.20 and a strike rate of 143.86. Smith started slowly for Rajasthan Royals but upped his run-scoring significantly once he was made captain, ending with 319 runs in ten innings at an average of 39.87 and a strike rate of 116.00.

Rincón no Corithians
Glamorgan 449 and 137 for 1 (Labuschagne 90*) lead Worcestershire 370 (D’Oliveira 103) by 216 runsMarnus Labuschagne saw off (in Glamorgan’s eyes at least) rival claims on behalf of Warwickshire’s Dom Sibley in the race to reach 1,000 first-class runs this season, so becoming the first Glamorgan batsman to achieve that particular feat since Steve James in 1997.His achievements this season were duly rewarded when he was presented with his county cap by Glamorgan stalwart Alan Jones during the lunch interval.Sibley’s record included runs in the season’s curtain-raiser betweern MCC and the Champion County which was traditionally played at Lord’s but which this season took place in the UAE.Brett D’Oliveira summoned a dogged century in a rare Championship appearance to lead Worcestershire’s resistance but Division Two leaders Glamorgan took an overall lead of 216 to set up an exciting final day of their Specsavers County Championship clash in Cardiff.Glamorgan will begin the final day on 137 for 1 in their second innings, with the prolific Australian Marnus Labuschagne 90 not out, after they had gained a first innings lead for the first time this season. He built a second wicket partnership in excess of a hundred with Nick Selman to take his side a step closer to the win, and himself closer to a fifth first-class hundred this season. But the innings had begun poorly, when Owen Morgan was caught behind off Joe Leach from just the sixth delivery.Earlier in the day, having resumed their first innings on 191 for 5, Charlie Morris and Ed Barnard looked to reduce Worcestershire’s deficit from the outset. However, they got off to a calamitous start as Morris, attempting a quick single, was run out by Billy Root in the seventh over.Barnard reached his half-century from 93 deliveries, bringing up the milestone with successive boundaries after Glamorgan’s Lukas Carey had taken the new ball. But he was dismissed, leg before wicket to Michael Hogan for 56.The visitors had obtained a second batting point shortly before Ben Cox edged Dan Douthwaite to wicket-keeper Tom Cullen, who picked up his third catch of the innings. They gained a third batting point early in the afternoon session, but they soon lost Joe Leach when he was caught behind off Michael Hogan, as Tom Cullen claimed his fourth catch and Glamorgan claimed full bonus points for the match.D’Oliveira reached his half-century from 70 deliveries, including five fours. A patient Adam Finch, who had got off the mark from his fifteenth delivery, took until his 36th to score again, when he drove Michael Hogan through the off-side for four.D’Oliveira, who prior to this innings had had a lean season with scores of 31 and 0 in red ball cricket, faced 154 balls and had struck 12 fours before he was caught and bowled by Michael Hogan for 103 from the final delivery before tea, with the bowler finishing with five wickets for 62.
Tottenham Hotspur are only five points better off in the Premier League this season than they were last year, but Ange Postecoglou is clearly shifting the cogs to chart a course to success unseen in many years.
Ange Postecoglou.
A painful reminder, but unless Tottenham pull off a sensational and implausible title triumph, a barren trophy drought will stretch to 16 successive seasons without silverware.
This interminable wait for the unbridled joy that one of the game's major honours would bring rages on, but Postecoglou arrived in the summer to steer the ship back on course and has navigated through several obstacles to instil his vision and give the squad an identity.
Harry Kane ended his career-long affiliation with the London club in August and headed for the footballing riches Bayern Munich can offer, but Heung-min Son was handed the primary talismanic role and Spurs spent shrewdly to counter the blow.
Micky van de Ven and shot-stopper Guglielmo Vicario proved excellent pieces of business to shore up a defence that leaked goals like a ruptured container, but it is the capture of James Maddison from relegated Leicester City that has been the centremost success of Postecoglou's reign so far.
Why Tottenham signed James Maddison
Signed for £40m in June, Tottenham saw an opportunity following the Foxes' demise in 2022/23 and snatched it, bypassing lasting interest from wealthy Newcastle United to steal away with one of the Premier League's standout playmakers.
James Maddison in action for Leicester City.
Last season, Leicester fell into the second tier on the final day but Maddison emerged with his head held high, posting ten goals and nine assists from just 28 starting appearances.
He also ranks among the top 5% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists and progressive passes and the top 1% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref, making good on praise from pundit Jermaine Jenas that he is "on the verge" of being world-class.
The £170k-per-week star started life in London with a bang, crowned the Premier League's Player of the Month for August and having now plundered three goals and six assists from 13 matches, also completing 86% of his passes and averaging 2.8 key passes per game.
With Heung-min Son and Richarlison raking in goals for Postecoglou's side this season, Maddison's efficiency in his creative endeavours has proved invaluable for the club's progress this term, and he's undoubtedly one of Tottenham's most important and influential members.
Spurs could have signed "monster" £100m Richarlison replacement
Ange Postecoglou’s side still need a centre-forward to replace Harry Kane.
ByAngus Sinclair Feb 5, 2024
He's not, however, the Spurs star with the highest market value right now, that tag lies with Dejan Kulusevski, who has been phenomenal this season and is arguably Postecoglou's most underrated ace.
Tottenham's signing of Dejan Kulusevski
Spurs captured Kulusevski and centre-midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus back in 2022, with the former joining on an initial 18-month loan.
An electric start to life on English shores saw the Sweden international clinch five goals and eight assists across the latter half of the 2021/22 Premier League season, but he was very much at the core of Spurs' issues last term and scored twice from 37 outings in all competitions, said to be "blowing hot and cold" by pundit Glenn Murray.
Tottenham ace Dejan Kulusevski.
The 23-year-old has always been regarded as a high-class talent and there was clearly a tacit belief that he would return to the forefront under Postecoglou's wing, with a £25m permanent transfer agreed upon last summer.
Dejan Kulusevski's market value now
Typically found on the right wing but capable of doing fine work centrally, Kulusevski is actually considered to be Tottenham's most valuable player by Football Transfers and this is an illustration of his prowess and unrelenting energy – the very quintessence of his manager's fluid, guns-blazing approach.

More valuable than Maddison (who, admittedly, is sure to see a sharp rise in the near future), Kulusevski is versatile and dynamic and is finally flourishing with the kind of constancy that portends an illustrious future at the top of the game.
As per Sofascore, the 6 foot 1 phenom has scored five goals and supplied two assists from 21 matches in the top flight this year, though his brilliance stretches far beyond the constraints of direct goal contributions.
Indeed, he has also completed 83% of his passes, averaged 1.7 tackles, 4.3 ball recoveries and 4.2 successful duels per fixture, leading Sky Sports journalist Jamie Weir to state: "Dejan Kulusevski really is a special special player. Works so hard, covers every blade of grass. Hell of an engine on him, and just so much heart."
The former Juve starlet also ranks among the top 18% of positional peers for tackles made per 90 to emphasise the application that has made him such an indispensable figure for his side.

With tools to inflict damage on opposition from many, many angles, Kulusevski is sure to feature at the centre of Tottenham's projected rise under their Australian manager, and while he doesn't have the finishing ability of Son, or the raw creative excellence of Maddison, he is undoubtedly one of the most important ingredients in the Spurs side – the flour in the cake, if you like, vital and unseen.
The acquisitions of both players are just an illustration of the upward curve that Spurs are seeking to continue, embarking on a new journey under new leadership with a fresh vision and rekindled optimism.
Next summer, Levy will bolster Tottenham's ranks further, with centre-forward and central midfield signings likely, and given the judiciousness that is at the centre of the recent business, the future looks bright and the likes of Kulusevski will be at the heart of it.
Sunderland will go into Valentine's Day hoping that love remains in the air amongst the Black Cats fanbase towards manager Michael Beale, with the once divisive figure in the Stadium of Light dug-out beginning to win fans over.
Beating Huddersfield Town away tomorrow night would see Sunderland pick up back-to-back wins and ramp up the pressure on Coventry City – who currently occupy sixth spot – to pick up a victory themselves away at Plymouth Argyle.
Beale could well be tempted to make a couple of changes for his side's midweek trip to West Yorkshire in order to field the best possible side capable of overcoming the Terriers – who have bagged seven goals in their last two contests despite their lowly Championship ranking.
Here's what the potential Sunderland XI could look like at the John Smith's Stadium tomorrow night, with new Black Cats signing Leo Hjelde at risk of dropping out in two changes…
1 GK – Anthony Patterson
Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.
There's no danger in Anthony Patterson dropping out of Beale's XI for the trip to Huddersfield tomorrow, the 23-year-old shot-stopper not missing a single minute of action under the former Rangers manager since he took the Black Cats post.
2 RB – Jenson Seelt
The first change to the side that comfortably beat Plymouth 3-1 last time out could see Hjelde drop out of the lineup, leading to a slightly reshuffled back four starting against the Terriers.
The 20-year-old – who joined from Leeds United just this January – was arguably poor even in the smooth-sailing victory against the Pilgrims, losing possession 20 times playing out from the back.
With a lack of other full-back options at Beale's disposal, Jenson Seelt could come in and play as a makeshift right-back again – the ex-PSV Eindhoven youngster competently coming in to fulfil this role previously this campaign.
Trai Hume would move over to the left flank as a result, Sunderland thankful that a number of their players are unafraid to be adaptable when needed.
3 CB – Daniel Ballard
Dom Ballard
Daniel Ballard's spot in the side looks to be set in stone even with this personnel switch at right-back, the imperious centre-back rock solid against Plymouth at the weekend.
Ballard winning 100% of his aerial duels allowed the Black Cats to keep the travelling Pilgrims at bay for the most part, with the 24-year-old eager to pick up a clean sheet in West Yorkshire tomorrow night.
4 CB – Luke O'Nien
Luke-O'Nien-Michael-Beale
Luke O'Nien will also be chomping at the bit to put in another dogged display against Huddersfield, potentially nullifying an improved Terriers attack that managed to put three past high-flying Southampton at the weekend.
The Black Cats captain was equally as successful in rolling his sleeves up alongside Ballard against Plymouth, winning 100% of his duels with ease.
5 LB – Trai Hume
Trai Hume
Hume continues to be a dependable presence in the back four for Sunderland this season, with Beale not apprehensive to chuck the Northern Irish full-back out to the left-hand side against Huddersfield.
Amassing 103 touches of the ball at the Stadium of Light last time out, Beale will want Hume to be as lively away at Huddersfield to help his side pick up another win.
6 CM – Dan Neil
Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil.
Operating as the lone holding midfielder in a 4-1-4-1 formation last match, Dan Neil came away from the game with flying colours for how he kept Plymouth attackers at arm's length alongside setting up his more attacking teammates.
Sunderland's confident number 24 was able to orchestrate many attacking moves from deep playing in this role, notching up two key passes in total and even helping himself to an assist for Jobe Bellingham's game-clinching strike.
7 RM – Patrick Roberts
Sunderland winger Patrick Roberts.
Patrick Roberts will pray that he doesn't see the Sunderland treatment room for some time now after battling back from injury, the former Celtic man buzzing with his display against the visitors from Devon last time out.
Only starting 19 games this campaign, the 27-year-old right winger will hope an extended period in the first team will now come off the back of this electric 69 minutes on the Stadium of Light turf.
Assisting Pierre Ekwah's well-worked free-kick by teeing up the 22-year-old to fire home, Roberts also notched up five successfully won duels on a fantastic afternoon for the Black Cats man.
8 CM – Pierre Ekwah
Sunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah.
Pierre Ekwah would also have walked off the pitch with a spring in his step after an excellent display against the Pilgrims, firing in the equalising strike on the day to set Sunderland on their way to a comfortable 3-1 victory.
Moreover, the Black Cats' number 39 was strong and firm when necessary away from his ability to thunder home a goal – winning two tackles in total to ensure the win was eventually straightforward.
9 CM – Jobe Bellingham
The second change Beale is likely to make is dropping Abdoullah Ba for Bellingham, a harsh call arguably considering Ba's recent upturn in form that saw him star against Stoke City late last month.
Yet, the Sunderland boss would be a fool not to reinstate Bellingham back into the XI after his all-important goal against Plymouth from off the bench.
Gliding effortlessly with the ball at his feet before striking an effort at Conor Hazard's goal that soared in, Bellingham's magical moment sent the Stadium of Light masses into raptures and sealed a brilliant three points.
Bellingham's teammate in Jack Clarke showered the 18-year-old ace with understandable praise after the game, describing the former Birmingham City teenager as "top drawer."
10 LM – Jack Clarke
Clarke might well have chosen to wax lyrical about Bellingham's sensational strike, but the former Tottenham Hotspur attacker's own goal in the 3-1 win was equally as special.
Twisting and turning Argyle defender Bali Mumba for fun – almost teasing the ex-Norwich City full-back at one point by looking as if he was going to pass – Clarke's sweetly struck effort clipped the post and went in to give Sunderland the 2-1 lead at the time.
Clarke will hope he can add another goal to his ever-increasing Championship tally of 14 against Huddersfield, the Black Cats whizz undroppable currently.
The series had been in doubt after Zimbabwe were suspended, but a late confirmation from Zimbabwe Cricket has kept it alive

Zimbabwe are set to play in a T20I tri-series in Bangladesh – with Afghanistan as the third team – next month, which will be their first assignment since the ICC suspended them last month. The series was part of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) schedule for the 2019-20 season, and they waited till Wednesday evening for confirmation from Zimbabwe Cricket. The series was meant to have given Zimbabwe preparation for the World T20 qualifiers later this year from which they were removed on Tuesday.Bangladesh’s 2019-20 home season will open with their maiden Test against Afghanistan, in Chattogram from September 5 to 9, before they play the tri-series from September 13 to 24. The double-league phase will be played in Dhaka and Chattogram, with the final to be held in Dhaka on September 24.”We are holding the tri-series as planned,” said BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury. “We had to wait till now for them to confirm their participation. The ICC has clearly stated that they are allowed to play against member boards.”ESPNcricinfo has learned that additional ODIs against Zimbabwe, following the T20I tri-series, have not been ruled out by the BCB. These matches, or even a single ODI, could well be Mashrafe Mortaza’s farewell from international cricket, but talks of a fitting send-off are still on within the BCB.
